Removing iTunes duplicate files

I'm not sure exactly how it happened, but most of my songs in iTunes have a duplicate file. For example, when I select "Show song file" the folder where the songs are stored looks like the following. The file ending ..1 is the one that is being used in each case.
01 How Am I Different 1.mp3
01 How Am I Different.mp3
02 Nothing is Good Enough 1.mp3
02 Nothing is Good Enough.mp3
...and so on
First, any ideas how this might have happened? I do remember consolidating the library sometime ago - might that have done it?
Secondly, how can I safely remove the duplicate files without corrupting my library or losing music?
Thanks!

I've got over 900 dupes like this. I looked at each pair, and the only difference is the modification date. All mp3 tags are the same, as are the compression params and the Fairplay params.
In my case these dupes were created when I imported large partions of an almost-but-not-quite identical library from another computer, in attempt to do a manual sync between two iTunes libraries on two different machines.
iTunes seems to be a bit too conservative in it's criteria for detecting differences during an import. Clashing mp3 tags is reasonable, but clashing mod dates when there's no other differences is too much. I'm going to file this as an iTunes bug.

You can try going to iTunes with your device connected, select your device, then click view, show duplicate items

  • How to automate removal of Duplicate files

Is there a way to automate the removal of duplicate files with LR2?
In my catalog of 62,000 files I have 7,300 that I believe are duplicates.
They are proprietary RAW files (CR2). I have the same files as DNG. At least I think I do.
My intention is to have all my RAW files as DNG only.

If you believe all of you CR2's are duplicates, just filter All Photographs by file type and delete all Raw's.
If you have unique CR2's (that have not DNG equivalents) you'll ned a third party utility that is able to detect duplicates ignoring the extension. Delete duplicates from drive, then use Synchronize Folder to remove missing files from catalog.

  • Removing iTunes preference files

When I open my iTunes, it crashes. Windows gives me an "iTunes has stopped working" error. I've found that removing the iTunesPrefs files from AppData>Roaming>Apple Computer>iTunes works, but only when I open iTunes for the FIRST time. When I close and open a next time it crashes. This is a new laptop, and iTunes was working fine before, so I suspect that it was something I may have installed. Can anyone help? Can the effects be reversed?

    Hi guys,
I cannot exactly tell you what fixes the problem but it seems that when you just install iTunes 10.7 again it does not overwrite all files which have been altered by the iTunes 11 installation. But following this short tutorial fixed the -42048 error for me:

  • How do I remove iTunes U files from my iPod?

I just loaded a few iTunes U files on my iPod (first generation Nano, software version 1.3.1), and now I can see no way to remove them. I manually manage all my music, but the iTunes U files don't show up in music. When I click on the iTunes U tab, I can see the series I want to remove in the Collections window, but it's faded and un-click-on-able.
Is there a way to do this without restoring the iPod?

I talked with a tech guy at apple and he said if you manually add and remove files (like I do) there is no way to remove these files unless you wipe your ipod clean and reload everything else you had on it.
Sorry i don't have better news. I think it's so stupid that they overlooked this and made itunes u available.
The tech guy told me that if you go on http://www.apple.com/feedback/itunesapp.html
and basically file a complaint, the software guys will eventually fix the problem. Hopefully enough people go on so they fix it.

  • When will Apple fix the bug that won't allow us to remove iTunes U files from iPods?

    The title says it all.
I'm stuck with iTunes U files on my Gen 4 iPod Nano that I can't get off. Automatically syncing is not an option as my 75GB of music won't fit on my 16GB Nano.
Apple, it's been over a year! Come on, you're upsetting your customer base!

Create a playlist with the content that you want on the device, small enough to fit, restore the device and sync with just that playlist.

  • Remove iTunes Duplicates

I have a playlist in my iTunes account with about 1000 songs in it. However there are many duplicates. When I use the inbuilt function to display duplicates or display exact duplicates it comes up with none. The problem is that the names and artist are different from each other. This can be seen in the image I have attached below.
I was wondering if there is a solution for this that will search for duplicates by the actual contents of the song. Thanks/

You can take a look at Dougs scripts…
    http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=removeduplicates
I suspect you will fail to get that to do what you desire since the tracks appear differently titled.
Instead I think you may need to find a sort column that allows you to filter them in a better way, for example sort by the 'file bit rate' if they are from different sources. Or sort by artist name to group them, or possibly play count if some are always skipped.
The view menu should have options to enable different column headings.
You could also search for "(" in song title etc to find ones to remove en masse.
It is a painful process of whittling, it could be quicker to make a new playlist & throw the tracks into that again

  • ITunes creating duplicate files under a hidden folder named "Volumes".

It seems my iTunes program is secretly making a duplicate file in a hidden folder called "Volumes" on my laptop hard drive. It's now maxxed out my drive and I need to both remove the "Volumes" folder and make sure it doesn't get created and happen again.
    Details:
Using a Powerbook G4 with an 80gb drive. Using iTunes 8. The iTunes library program is in the usual place on the lap top hard drive but the music library folder, where all the files get saved to, is on an external drive labeled "Media".
Clicking normally and searching around my laptop hard drive, I do not see or am able to access the folder named "Volumes". But I know it exists as I ran a scan program called jdiscreport and it clearly shows a huge folder, 45gb, named "Volumes". There are also a few old flacs in the "Volume folder also. The iTunes duplicate files are in identically named folders as the external drive: iTunes Music located within Media, located within Volumes.
When I rip a CD in iTunes (or the iTunes-LAME program I sometimes use), the files do go to the proper external folder as expected and as I've set in the iTunes preferences section. So why is iTunes also saving the same thing to this mystery "Volumes" folder on the lap top hard drive? How do I get rid of this folder without wiping my drive? How do I stop it from continuing?
Help, I have 2gb of free space left!
    Thanks, James

Hi I am having a similar issue, It all started when I tried to restore from the Time Machine and it threw a error back stating that there is no disk available. I was wondering how come and went to find out what is happening and was shocked to find out that actually my entire Macintosh HD has a duplicate copy inside the /Volumes folder. I went to the XTERM to investigate and found that the / (root) has a Users folder where all my stuffs like pictures, music, movies, documents reside and the same data or content is duplicated in the /Volumes/Macintosh HD/Users folder
I first thought that it was only a link, but I later found that it is not a link and it is indeed a physical copy of all my User folders inside the /Volumes/Macintosh HD/Users folder and actually occupying my Hard disk space.
I am not sure how this happened or how it is duplicating itself. I am also afraid to delete the stuffs inside the /Volumes folder as it might crash my system (it is already hidden - I assume it is hidden for some purpose). Please suggest any options, how I can get rid of these duplicated data and how to avoid such duplication in the future.
    Thanks

  • Removing iTunes files

I have a MacBookAir that I would like to remove iTunes music files, but do not want to harm things.  I use my MacBookPro to load my iPhone5 and never use the MBA.  All MBP files are the only ones used and they are backed up to an external HD.
Can I removed these files from the MBA without damaging future use?
    - iTunes Media
    - iTunes Library.itl
    - iTunes Library Extras.itdb
    - iTunes Music Library.xml
    - iTunes Library Genius.itdb
    - Previous iTunes Libraries
My music on the MBA is now up to 75% of the SSD and I need to clear space.  Since I use the MPB and iPhone5 to listen to music I want to try and clear out some of the SSD on the MBA.  However, I do not want to remove things that operate iTunes.
    Thanks for any help.

Yes. Nothing in your home folder is necessary for iTunes or the OS to run.

  • Backup issues. Trying to delete iTunes preference files, but Apple Computer folder is missing (should be in the roaming folder)

Want to backup before a restore, but I have no backup option available in iTunes. I'm pretty sure I found the answer as this has solved the problem for others in other forums:
    Remove iTunes Preference files
Some of the files that iTunes uses to store settings and preferences may be unusable and cause issues. iTunes has two folders where preferences are saved. Move one of them to the desktop and test to see if the issue persists. If it does, move it back and remove the second folder. The location for the two preference folders are:
    C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Apple Computer\iTunes
    C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes
BUT after getting into both my roaming and local folder I find I do not even have an 'apple computer' folder. I have iTunes installed on my computer and have used it so I am confused. I use Windows 7.
I would appreciate anyone's help. Thanks!

Nevermind. I found the files. It didn't work anyway as the files kept repopulating themselves after I deleted them and reopened iTunes.

  • ITunes not removing files duplicate files or organizing properly

I have iTunes set to keep my files organized (i.e. in directories matching the albums and artist names) but recently it stopped doing this properly. Also I spent a lot of time deleting duplicates and clicked to remove from hard drive as well but in many case it didn't remove he duplicates. I don't know why.
I want to back up my whole library but i want to make sure it's "clean" first.
Is there any way to fix this problem?
Maybe the easiest way is to make a copy of all the MP3 files and just delete the whole iTunes library and rebuild it, then go through and delete the duplicates again. Would this work? Is this safe? Does anyone have instructions on how to do this?
    Thanks.

My problem is not related to that other thread, however it appears the same thing that's causing this problem is causing the problem with the ID3 tags so there is no need to discuss in two separate threads. Thanks.

  • Every time that I play a tune from my itunes the file duplicates itself into my 'MyDocuments' folder. If I delete this the song is erased from itunes totally. Ideas??

Everything worked fine for the last two years but now every time that I play a tune from my itunes the file duplicates itself into my 'MyDocuments' folder. If I delete this the song is erased from itunes totally. Ideas??

You are of course deleting the tunes from within the iTunes interface.
The settings that I am referring to are your device settings for the iPad. It should show in the left column of iTunes when your iPad is plugged in.
Go through your playlists and make sure that the tunes(s) are removed from any playlist. You can prevent the sync as noted above then do a sync and the iPad should update with the content from you Mac.

  • HT1660 i have two independent itunes libraries on my computer right now. how do i consolidate them into one library? how do i get rid of duplicate files?

i have two independent itunes libraries on my computer right now. how do i consolidate them into one library? how do i get rid of duplicate files?

    Hello rmunsey,
Thank you for the question.  It sounds like you have two separate iTunes Libraries but would like to add the music from one to the other to have one consolidated library.
If you know where the files are for each library, I recommend opening one iTunes Library in iTunes and importing the files from the other library using the following steps:
    Open iTunes
From the File menu, choose one of the following choices:
    MacAdd to Library
    Windows
    Add File to Library
    Add Folder to Library
Navigate to and select the file or folder that you want to add
Adding music and other content to iTunes
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1473
Next, you can search for duplicates:
Choose View > Show Duplicate Items to show duplicate items (matches are based on the song name and artist). If you have multiple versions of the same song (for example, live and studio versions, or versions from different albums) you can hold the Alt or Option key (for Mac OS X) or the Shift key (for Windows) and choose View > Show Exact Duplicate Items. This will show only duplicate songs having the same name, artist, and album.
How to find and remove duplicate items in your iTunes library
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2905
This should help you identify the duplicates all at one time so that you can delete the extra versions of songs.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Best,
    Sheila M.
