Removing iTunes Movies to gain more space

I just removed my iTunes movies because the HD was showing 479GB used of 500GB to gain more HD space.  After turning off my MacBook Pro and restarting, the storage amount shows the same as before.  Is there a way to reset the storge reading?

Thank you for your help.  Found hidden folder where duplicates of the movies were being stored.  Will delete and fix problem.

You should never, EVER let a conputer hard drive get completely full, EVER!
With Macs and OS X, you shouldn't let the hard drive get below 15 GBs or less of free data space.
If it does, it's time for some hard drive housecleaning.
Follow some of my tips for cleaning out, deleting and archiving data from your Mac's internal hard drive.
Have you emptied your Mac's Trash icon in the Dock?
If you use iPhoto, iPhoto has its own trash that needs to be emptied, also.
If you store images in other locations other than iPhoto, then you will have to weed through these to determine what to archive and what to delete.
If you use Apple Mail app, Apple Mail also has its own trash area that needs to be emptied, too!
Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive to disc, flash drives or external hard drive, older emails you want to save.
Look through your other Mailboxes and other Mail categories to see If there is other mail you can archive and/or delete.
Other things you can do to gain space.
Once you have around 15 GBs regained, do a search, download and install OmniDisk Sweeper.
This app will help you locate files that you can move/archive and/or delete from your system.
STAY AWAY FROM DELETING ANY FILES FROM OS X SYSTEM FOLDER!
Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
Again, archive to disc, flash drives, ext. hard drives or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
Look in your Applications folder, if you have applications you haven't used in a long time, if the app doesn't have a dedicated uninstaller, then you can simply drag it into the OS X Trash icon. IF the application has an uninstaller app, then use it to completely delete the app from your Mac.
Download an app called OnyX for your version of OS X.
When you install and launch it, let it do its initial automatic tests, then go to the cleaning and maintenance tabs and run the maintenance tabs that let OnyX clean out all web browser cache files, web browser histories, system cache files, delete old error log files.
Typically, iTunes and iPhoto libraries are the biggest users of HD space.
move these files/data off of your internal drive to the external hard drive and deleted off of the internal hard drive.
If you have any other large folders of personal data or projects, these should be archived or moved, also, to the optical discs, flash drives or external hard drive and then either archived to disc and/or deleted off your internal hard drive.
    Good Luck!

  • HT4972 i want to update my software version to 6.1.3. but my c drive runs out of memory and i cannot upgrade it at the end, but having to delete the files and gain  more space for the computer to operate... plz help me :(

i want to update my software version to 6.1.3.. but i have never updated this before and this is my first time.. im having 20 GB apps and music in my ipod. so when i click 'update and download' tab it starts downloading the new version and upgrading,... but afetr some time it says im having a very low memory in c drive and i would have to stop the upgrading...
can i use my external hard to save this download and upgrading files without using my c drive? plz give me a solution as im only having only 7GB of space left in the C drive

I would rather you delete/move other files to the external HD rather than downloading the update file to the external HD.
First try going here and delete any update files to regain C drive space.

Also, make sure that you have emptied your computer's recycle bin
You can try the manual update/restore method included here and download the file to the external HD

  • Movie using much more space than file size

Hello. I published a movie in imovie to the media gallery in HD. It is a long video, so I knew it would take up a lot of space. It is listed as 5 GB in my imovie project folder. However, when I "show package contents" of the movie, the actual size of the 720 movie is only 1.3 gb. All of the other folders listed in the contents are just a few MB. Any idea why this is using 5gb of not only my hard drive, but of my Mobile Me space, when it seems like the video should only be using 1.5 GB.
You can see the video here, but obviously it takes some time to buffer.

I am not using mobile me, because I designed a website specifically to show my videos, and this way I can send out one page at a time without people having access to the entire gallery.
I would rather not compress the videos, as wouldn't this take some quality away. All I did was choose the "large" option on iweb
But the strange part is, why is the video listed as 5GB in size, but when I open up the contents (show file contents", I see that the actual movie is only 1-2 GB in size?
    Thanks

  • How do I clear up Temp files from Photoshop to gain more space in my HD?

How do I delete temp files created by Photoshop? I can't find these files.
I only have one HD. It says capacity is 243.22 GB and available space is 1.58 GB. I already backed up my personal files so I expected it should have more disk space but it didn't.
How can something use up 243 GB space in my mac?

"I would suggest reporting back before deleting anything, unless you really know what it is."
I am going to be back in here shortly after using OmniDiskSweeper. I just have a one month old infant on my lap who needs attention, that's why.
Yes, I really wouldn't know what files are to be deleted safely. OmniSweeper doesn't tell me that. But at least I know what is taking so much big space in my HD, what program I can survive without it so I can sort it out which to delete or not.

  • How to delete photos in order to gain more space

    hi everyone,
i know how to delete photos and vidéos, but the avalaible space does not change.
is there a way to gain space?
    Thank you

salientgreen is right. But my suggestion is that you'd better first transfer these data to your computer to have a backup and then delete them to free up space.
By the way, you can open Settings and navigate to General > Usage to get an idea of your storage consumption. Music, videos, and photos might be the biggest offender.

  • Is it possible to gain more space than the files deleted on a mac?

I am on a macbook pro running 10.5.8
Basically my mac reported about 70MB of hard drive space left when it stop me from downloading a app so I backup some files to a external drive before deleting it. All was fine until I realized that my mac reported about 15GB of free space but my backup only show around 10GB. Thinking back, I should have match the file size beforehand but I am Pretty Sure all the files were on the backup before I deleted it but since the math does not add up, I am now double guessing myself that maybe i deleted something else that was not meant to be.
So is it possible that the mac also deleted some hidden files that counted toward that extra 5GB or maybe somehow those 5GB was just unaccounted for like some sort of glitch until I emptied the trash? The feeling of uncertainty has been stressing me out and the events leading to me pressing the emptied trash button keep replaying in my head to find a reasoning behind it. I want to just trust myself but the extra free space bothers me. Hopefully, it is not because of the external drive failing to copied all the files.
As far as I know, the mac does not keep a log of what or when files were deleted but it would have been something useful to have.
Any insight will be helpful and appreciated.
Oh, and i am pass the point of using a recovery software since the files are most likely overwritten by now.

I think you need to take a philosophical view: Your computer is working, you mave more storage space, enough to do your download. Whatever is deleted is deleted, and you haven't missed it so maybe it wasn't that important - if it was there at all.

You can't do that. iCloud does function that way.

  • How can I move/combine toolbars on the same line to gain more screen space ??

In IE you can lock or unlock toolbars and grag them and move to another line to gain more screen space & still have all you need up there.
How can I do this in Fire-fox ??

You can only combine the content of several toolbars on one toolbar if the toolbars support that feature. If that is possible then you can do that via the View > Toolbars > Customize window or via the options of that toolbar (Tools > Add-ons > Extensions).

My iPad will not let me download an iTunes movie due to lack of space but I purchased more space and it still won't work

As stated above - purchasing more space in iCloud has nothing to do with this. You do not have enough space left on the iPad for the movie to download, you need to delete content on the device itself.
You may want to transfer purchases to iTunes and then delete some content on the device to make room.
    Transfer purchases.

  • How to remove remnants of a failed iTunes movie download?

Hi, please let me summarize my recent experience with an iTunes movie rental. At this point, I mainly want to know how to regain the space on my iPad. The whole disgrace of why the download was slow, why iTunes on my mac did not know about the rental initiated on my iPad (so I had to buy it again), or the fact that after the failed download iOS seems to have left a huge blob on my iPad "forever" stands here to flag this issue for fellow users and Apple.
Let's start with the issue that would help me solve the situation as things stand now: Now I have the movie downloaded to my mac's iTunes, finally, but now I cannot sync it to the iPad, as the latter has no free space --- as the failed download of the movie there left there a large "file", which I cannot remove. The file is not seen by the iPad's iTunes Store or Movies apps (there I deleted what I could), I closed both apps specifically, I restarted and synced the iPad multiple times, but the free space is not recovered.
The background is that our Friday movie night ended up being a 4-hour ordeal attempting to have a fraction of the movie downloaded to start watching, and even worse, the download did not finish (or even continue!) while we started watching, but failed, and failed miserably, losing me even more time now. I started renting the movie one more time, then on my mac, hoping that the download will be faster there, but it wasn't, and now that I have the movie, I still cannot play it on my $500 "resolutionary display"...
Not even to mention that iTunes on my mac did not know about my rental on the iPad. So instead of the promised "seamless" continuiation of the movie on the MacBook (which I hoped will have a[n even] better connection to the iTunes Store, partly because of its better antenna --- it did not), I had to pay up again, restart the download, and still see it only trickling down.
The whole problem started with the download speed being unacceptable. I checked my downstream bandwidth, which was 16 MB/s. Then offering me to download the movie in 5 hours or so is more than disappointing.
Funnily enough, in the end now my mac's iTunes realized that there were a purchase on my iPad, and restarted the "original" download. So now I have two 4.5 GB copies of Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy on my mac! What a waste of space and bandwidth. But of course, iTunes keep track of me having started "watching" one of them, so that will soon expire. Pfff.
What a disgrace this is. Google Play, Amazon Instant, Netflix must be gleaming. I only tried iTunes for the 1080p experience on my expensive new iPad.

And there was more. I had to re-rent the movie on Google Play and finish it there, because the iPad won't play its downloaded fragment, nor did my mac's iTunes, which already downloaded two copies of "Happy" and three copies of the twice-rented Tinker, Tailor..., would show ANY of that under Rentals nor allow copying ANY to the iPad during syncing (though the movies at least showed up there, see the note three steps above this).
And iTunes would still start downloading another copy of both movies whenever it checks for "unfinished downloads". I think my HDD will be fully of copies of the same movies soon.
And the iPad still have a huge chunk of "Tinker, Tailor..." lingering on somewhere in the non-transparent file system...
At least the iTunes support guys ("Express" Lane after 24 hours, though over a weekend) were nice in their email, and I got my money back. Now I only need my time, sanity and storage space back.

  • Remove partially downloaded iTunes movie from iPad

I tried to download a movie to my iPad but the download stopped in the middle as there was not enough storage.  Now the partial movie is stuck on my iPad and I cannot remove it.  I have removed almost all data from my iPad to create more space but this hasn't helped.  When the iPad is connected to my Mac nothing shows in movies but there is a huge chunk of data showing in "Other" in the bar at the bottom.  When I try to manage storage on the iPad, the video app shows "no data".  I have looked at this problem in support communities and people have said that I must download the entire movie before I can delete it.  However, when I try to complete the download I still get message that there isn't enough available storage even though there is a lot of available space onthe iPad.  My iPad has iOS 7.0.4

Symptom: Frankly I rarely cared about the free space on my iPhone until it ran out today and my iPhone 4 warned me to release some space. The first thing that I were considering initially was to delete some large game Apps. But when I connected to my computer, I noticed that a "Other" bar was consuming 2.5 GB of my iPhone's 13.57 GB. Does anyone know what the Other means on my iPhone?
Don't Miss: How Can I Transfer Music from iPhone to iTunes
What is taking up "Other" space on my iPhone
Analysis: Some of you may think the Other on your iPhone is the pure OS taken space or Safari, email temporary data. But that’s not the complete answer.
Part of that Other space on iPhone is taken up by iOS, the operating system running on your iPhone. For this part, this is no way to reclaim the free space from that. However, the Other part of iPhone storage space also contains sort of caches and temp files generated by App and iTunes syncs, and some of them won't be used long-term.
The size used by Other on your iPhone largely depends on the App you currently installed on the phone. The more caches and temp files created by Apps, the more space consumed by Other. And of course, it may slow your iPhone down.
Solution: it is hardly to put up with 2-3GB space taken by Other on iPhone, especially we even have no idea about what exactly it is. So to remove the Other, you can try to reclaim this space by doing a sync with iTunes; in other cases, you may have to go through a full backup and restore process.
Because iTunes is terribly slow and troublesome on Windows PC (Best iTunes Alternatives ), and every time we sync our iPhone with iTunes will take lot of time. So, alternatively, you can use an iPhone Cleaner program to remove their Other files on your iPhone.
PhoneClean is an iPhone, iPad, iPod touch cleaner application, which is dedicatedly designed to free up space on iPhone; clean App cache, cookies, and history; sweep off media temp files, etc.

If I delete a movie to gain space on my computer,  is it lost ?

Depending upon what country that you are in, and which film studio that it's from (not all studios allow re-downloading), then you might be able to re-download it in the future via the Purchased link under Quick Links on the right-hand side of the iTunes store home page on your computer's iTunes. But you are better taking your own backup copy of it (e.g. copy it to an external drive), as even if you can currently re-download it there is no guarantee that you will be able to do so in the future (content providers occasionally remove their items from the store).
