Removing login screen

I hace just set up a new 27" with Lion. I now get a login screen showing my name and asking for a password. Not a disaster - I know my password. However I do not need thsi level of security and my previous 24' iMac (still running on my desk) has Lion installed but does not show this screen I have already set both machines not to require a password from screensaver.

Thanks for the quick response. I might not have explained the problem clearly enough and in fact have just resolved the issue. i went to the General tab under Security and Privacy, then unchecked and rechecked Disable Auto Login. I now go straight to Desktop on startup.

  • How can I remove the Guest account from the login screen?

I'm very new to the Mac world so pardon this noob question.  But how can I control what user accounts are visible on the login screen on OS X?  I've already went into the System Preference, User Accounts and set the Guest account to disabled.  However this account is still on the logon screen when I reboot the Mac!  How can I remove this account and/or make sure that my user account is the only one visible?

I'm not sure why this worked, but I found this in another post and it worked for me.
Even when the Guest Account / Access is disabled, the login option / and lock screen, still have a guest login.
This is because in Preferences/ Security & Privacy/General the bottom item is turned on.

  • Removed Nouveau, installed Nvidia, black login screen

    Hi there!
Seems like I was just here yesterday...  But seriously, it's coming together.
Today I hooked up my second monitor and tried to get the "one big monitor" effect with noveau, but it wasn't recognizing my setup.  I've had success with installing proprietary nvidia stuff before, so I did the
    "# pacman -S nvidia nvidia-utils"
after removing "nouveau-dri" and the "libgl" business.   I did all that from the bash login screen (which I'd like to keep as the first screen, instead of booting directly into GUI/DE).  After I rebooted, like the guide says to do, the bootloader went through fine, but then sat at a black screen.  After a couple of hard reboots I tried to just type root, password, and kdm, even though I couldn't see anything on the screen.  That worked to get me into the DE.  Problem is, that sucks and I have no idea how to get my bash login screen back, or what I did to lose it.  Anyone know where to look or what to do?  I've not found any info on the forum, or via google... Thank you once again!

My video card is an Nvidia GEForce 9400 GT.  There are no "EE" errors in the Xorg.0.log, a couple of fails, to do with APCI, and nothing in the errors.log or daemon.log (whether or not I should look in those for this issue, I'm still learning.  I did indeed run "nvidia-xconfig" as root.  Not sure what I'm missing.  It does now recognize both monitors after I blindly root login and launch kdm, but ya know... Below is the var/log/xorg.0.log in case this means anything to anyone out there... I'm thinking about doing a fresh install now that I know a few more things.
I installed the entire kdm-meta package and I only really want to install a terminal and do the rest of it that way, if possible.  If it's any pennance for my blatant naievete, I am having fun learning from these mistakes!  Thanks for the input non-noobs!
    Cheers!

  • Good news! Removing "other user" from login screen.

I got a brand new macbook pro days ago. All are amazing, except the annoying "other user" on the login screen. I have googled and tried every possible solution such as disabling root user, changing user's name, deleting and etc.
Here is the 100% successful solution.

  • I have Two Icons at the Login screen I want to remove one how do I do that?

I have Two Icons at the Login screen I want to remove one how do I do that? I am Migrating a PC to a Mac Mini and the migration hung.  I ran it again and I now have two login Icons.  One has all my migrated files and the other does not. I want to remove the one without the files.
    Thanks

Open System Preferences>Users & Groups, unlock the lock, highlight the one you don't want click on the little minus icon.

  • How can i completely remove a guest account? from the login screen too?

Having difficulty removing my guest account. I've gone to system preferences and unchecked the guest account but it still appears upon computer boot up as an option. I want it completely off and not showing on the screen when turned on.

On your login screen, that's not a true "Guest" account. It's actually a security feature..your Mac will restart to a secured Safari-only version of the OS with access to the Internet...this enables you to find your Mac using iCloud. Thus, this should NOT be disabled.

  • I updated my iMac to lion and now when i leave my desktop and it goes into stand by it like a picture is taken of the screen and when i want to log in the mouse point removes pixels so i can get to the user login screen this never happened ith snow leopar

i upgraded my iMac to lion and now when i leave my desktop and it goes into stand by mode, its like a picture is taken of the actice desktop and when i want to log in the mouse point removes pixels so i can get to the user login screen this never happened ith snow leopard. does anyone else experience this and is there a fix?

I have an iMac 8, 1 that I upgraded Leopard to Snow Leopard.  It was totally updated with the latest from Apple when I bought and tried installing Lion.  The upgrade failed, shot my OS and I couldn't boot.  Had the constant spinner on a grey screen..  did a format of the drive, hdd repair and everything came back clean... got back to Snow Leopard and all the updates on it again and then retried the Lion thing... same bs... dead duck.  Crashed my system one too many times.  I can't see where a few small changes, mostly app related can be classified as an OS upgrade and is not compatible with my iMac.  I have the stuff running on my Mac Pro but have yet to notice anything impressive.  I've always used F3 and really didn't require Mission Control.  Just open you app folder for launch pad... duh?  I use the hot corners anyhow.  As far as Safari is concerned... as a power user, Apple missed the boat on that for me.. full screen etc.. Wow.  I don't like the new Mail either..
As you can see/read, I'm less than impressed with this release from Apple but I own so many of their products that I will have to put up with it for now... somehow the MS logo should apply to this release Steve.

  • Removing a user name from the Skype login screen o...

Hi, I want to remove a username from the skype login screen on a Samsung Smart TV, but haven't found any way of doing it.  I managed to remove a username on a laptop PC by looking up the Skype help but that method doesn't seem to work on the Smart TV - anyone got any suggestions? Thanks

    Hi
There is a way of doing this, but it involves resetting ALL of the smarthub back it's default state - which would mean that you would have re-install any other apps that you have downloaded.
To do this, go to the SMART HUB menu and press the TOOLS button on the remote. WHen the menu appears, select the SETTINGS option and then RESET. You'll need to enter your PIN (if set) before you can reset the SMART HUB back to its factory default state. When it's completed, Smart Hub will update itself next time you go back to it, and you'll notice that all of the Skype Names are now removed from the sign in screen.

  • How to remove/hide administrator account on login screen OS X 10.10

After a restart or reboot on the main login screen I have two accounts showing.  It has my account and a other account which is an administrator account.  I want to hide the other account.

Will this terminal command work in OS X 10.10?
sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow SHOWOTHERUSERS_MANAGED FALSE

  • After upgrade to Mavericks, a new gray screen appears just before the regular login screen.  The new screen appears for a few seconds with several boxes full of unidentifiable figures.  How can I remove?

    OS X Mavericks Upgrade Issue
Now when I boot my iMac, a new gray screen appears for a few seconds following the Apple screen and just before the login screen.  The new screen shows several boxes with unidentifiable figures in them.  It has become annoying because it has never appeared before.   Anyone know of a way to stop this screen (of garbage) from showing?  Thanks…Larry

  • How can I get an Active Direcotry account to show at login screen

I've just Binded a computer to our Active Directory network, and when I log off, I only see the local account listed at the login screen, and it takes 5-10 seconds before the arrow comes up that lets me choose Other.
I  want to be able to list the Active Directory account that the user should login with, is there a way to make it stick at the login screen?

You can add extra empty toolbars if you want to see more of the persona.
You can create extra toolbars to get extra space via "View > Toolbars > Customize" or "Firefox > Options > Toolbar Layout"
You have to put something on a toolbar (drag a Space item onto it) before closing the Customize window because empty toolbars are automatically removed.

  • How to enable login screen which doesn't require a password

I'm setting up an image for a computer lab. The computers that are currently in this lab auto login. However, in the off case that a student accidentally (or maybe purposefully) locks the computer, we want them to be able to simply click the user account
picture and it logs in without asking for a password. The current Windows 7 PCs in this lab work that way, but whoever set them up can't remember how this was accomplished and I can't figure out for the life of me how to get it done. Currently, if I lock the
PC, it just brings me to the login screen with a blank username & blank password field.
These machines are not on the domain. Does anyone have any idea how to get this behavior out of the login screen?

    BYPASS LOGIN
Open a Run window (Windows Logo key+R), type netplwiz and press Enter. Remove the tick from “Users must enter a user name and password” > OK. You may have to type the user account name/password just the once to complete the process.
BYPASS ENTERING A PASSWORD AFTER WAKEUP
To bypass entering a password after hibernation, go to Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > Power Options > Require a password on wakeup (in the left pane) and put a check mark in Don’t require a password.

  • I have OSX 10.5.7 on my Intel Mac. When I try to login using the correct password the screen goes white and just returns back to the login screen. It does not jiggle like when you enter the wrong password.

I have had a number of issues with my Intel Mac recently and had to reboot using disk utilities, safe mode, OSX recovery, but always come back to the login screen but when I type my password the screen goes white and returns to the login screen. My password is correct and the login does not jiggle as it would if the password was wrong. Please advise,

Back up all data if you haven’t already done so. There are ways to back up, even if you can’t log in. Before proceeding, you must be sure you can restore everything to the state it’s in now. If you’re not sure you can do that, STOP.
The procedure below may spare you the need for a clean reinstallation of OS X. If you don't feel comfortable carrying it out, don't. try.
Briefly, you need to delete the following file:
    /var/audit/current
If you already know how to do that, you can skip the rest of this message. Do it, and try again to log in.
Boot in single-user mode by holding down the key combination command-S at the startup chime. If you’re using an external USB keyboard, it must be plugged directly into a built-in port on the Mac, not into a hub. Release the keys when you see a black screen with scrolling white text. In this mode, there’s no graphical interface; just a command line. Initially, you can’t make any changes to files.
When the text stops scrolling, and you see a line ending in a pound sign (“#”), type the following command:
    mount -uw /
You must type the command exactly as given, with no mistakes. If you don’t feel able to do that, STOP. At this stage, no harm will be done if you make a mistake, but later, it will be. Press the return key.
    Next, type the following command:
    rm -i /var/audit/current
Press return. You should get the following output:
    remove /var/audit/current?
If that's not what you get, STOP. Type the single letter N, press return, and try again. Otherwise, type the single letter Y and pressreturn.
    Finally, enter the command:
    exit
Press return. The text will start scrolling again, and then the system will reboot. Try again to log in.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.
