Removing MacPorts fixed a lot of OS slowness and non-stop disk activity

I've read quite a few, individual posts, regarding Finder slowness, slow disk access, file copies ect. My HD did not stop grinding away since I installed Leopard a few days ago. Performance was terible and inconsistent. I removed about everything non-Apple I could think of, to no avail.
I remembered I installed PortAuthority and MacPOrts and set about removing them. After a reboot the HD is finally quiet. Things are approaching normal, despite the remaining "bugs" like print problems in Safari, slow application startup times, mail inconsistencies and slow boot times. This is the kind of stuff Apple can fix in a update or two, IMO.
Still, it seems that, with all of the beta testing going on, there could have been a formal "no fly zone" compiled somewhere, prior to the GM release.
Anyhow, if anyone else is experiencing bugginess in Leopard, look at what 'nix apps you might have installed in their not so ovbvious (hidden) directories. Perhaps they are plagueing your machine's performance.
Anyhow, I hope this proves useful to someone else.
cheers

I tried to update the latest software update for my MacBook pro (which was on 10/12) and after it started to update it restarted like normal but when it started back up it was running painfully slow and none oft programs will open. They all quit unexpectedly. iTunes microsoft word all of them quit unexpectedly. Help!

Exact same problem with my 2010 MBP 2.4ghz 4gb ram 10.6.8. iTunes said update was needed, Software Update ran with various updates including a security update, truthfully didn't pay much attention, I always install the Apple updates. After the restart it took 3-4 times longer than normal to get to the login screen, same to get to the desktop but I'm familiar with that occurring on update restarts. Unfortunately it got worse from there. Performed a full shutdown and startup. Same long boot.  After the desktop finally loads every mouse button press received a 2 minute beachball. I use menu-meters and both processors are under 10%. Waited a few minutes for disk utilities to launch, repair permissions estimates 3 hours for a typical <10 minute process. Activity monitor shows nothing over 10% CPU most of the time however ReportCrash pops to the top often. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. BTW zero problems until this update.

  • Slide just slows and then stops

I published an exe to view my movie to make sure it looks
right and on once slide I see the progress bar just slow and then
stop. I have to hit the "Forward" button in order to get it to go
to the next slide. I've looked and can't seem to figure out why
    it's doing this. Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance.
    Thom

    Hi Thom
Have you examined the slide in question to see if it has
perhaps one of the following objects?
    * Click Box
    * Button
    * Text Entry Box
Look at the Timeline and make sure you are looking at all
    objects.

  • Slow imac - too much disk activity

My wife's iMac is booting and running very slow. It takes close to 4 minutes for the boot process to complete. Once logged in applications start slow, run slow, and take forever to exit. Sometimes when quitting an application the application window will disappear but the menu bar will stay present with the Application pulldown name highlighted. The iMac at that point is locked up and the power button has to be used to shut it down.
    What happened prior to this?
From what I can tell, a few days ago, while using Mail, it would crash. Then the iMac started booting slowly and running slowly. I am not sure which happened first. Yesterday, when running Mail a dialog box appeared stating that no accounts existed on the iMac. I recreated her account. However, it still booted slowly and continued to run slowly.
    What I have tried:
I have used Cocktail to clear out DS Store, Cache files, and Repair Privileges. Cocktail hangs after running the Repair Privileges for about 2 minutes.
I have used Mac Scan 2 to search for possible ad/spy ware - it hangs when running.
I have booted from the 10.3 Installation CD and used Disk Utility to try to Repair Privileges. I was able to do that but had to run it several times before there were no more improper permissions assigned.
I have used Mac Janitor to run the 3 maintenance routines, Daily, Weekly, and Monthly. Daily ran fine. Monthly ran file. Weekly always hangs after running for about 2 minutes.
I have used TechTools and ran all tests available twice - all hardware passed both times.
I have used Terminal and run plutil on System and User preference files. No errors were reported.
I have disconnected all USB and Firewire devices. Only the keyboard and mouse that came with the iMac are connected to the iMac.
There also appears to be some type of disk activity always going on. It always has the same pattern:
    click, click..........click
    click, click..........click
    click, click...click, click, click, click
    click, click..........click
    click, click..........click
    click, click...click, click, click, click
I'm not saying the pattern is important, but the fact that it is consistent maybe.
Even at startup, as soon as the Apple logo appears, the same disk activity pattern can be heard.
Login was set to automatically login my wife. I changed that to require username and password. No change. Her account has admin privileges.
I then created a new administrator account and used it. The same slowness and disk activity results.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. The only thing I can think of to try at this point is to reinstall the operating system.
    Sincerely,
    Steve
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   400MHz 512MB Memory

Right off the bat you need a much larger hard drive. Not nearly large enough and you don't have much free space left.
Re-read my previous suggestion. Don't run "Verify Disk", run "Repair Disk."
Without the SMART status you cannot tell if the drive noises indicate a failing drive, but inasmuch as you need at least a 30 or 40 GB drive I'd suggest replacing the drive.
You can also do some maintenance.
Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.0 is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.5.2 is Intel Mac compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. The current version, 1.5.1, is Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. PsynchX 2.1.1 and RsyncX 2.1 (Freeware)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
    1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
    2. Toast
    3. Impression
    4. arRSync
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
Additional suggestions will be found in Mac Maintenance Quick Assist.

  • JPDA debug slow, CPU low, no disk activity

I tried to debug using JPDA with a Tomcat 4.0.3 target container. If I am very patient it finally connects after some good minutes. After that it debugs, even if rather slow.
However, during those minutes nothing seems to happen. CPU is low (under 5%), and there is no disk activity.
    JDK is 1.3.1_02, W95 (yes, still), 256M.
    Any ideas?
    Thank you,
    Florin

JDK is 1.3.1_02, W95 (yes, still), 256M.JPDA is really slow in Hotspot/Classic before JDK 1.4 (it's interpreting all the bytecode vs. running it natively). Try using classic if it's available instead of hotspot, it seems to be a bit faster at debugging.
Also, if you can, try JDK 1.4. It's JVM is MUCH faster at debugging than 1.3 is.
    Hope this helps,

  • Illustrator cs5 on windows 7 64bit SLOW and non responding.

OS Name Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium
    System Type x64-based PC
    Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU       Q 720  @ 1.60GHz, 1600 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 8 Logical Processor(s)
Installed Physical Memory (RAM) 6.00 GB
I am in the midst of a 7-day free trial at Lynda.com learning Illustrator.  My illustrator is so slow to respond open, save, any work in it.  Any minor change takes such a long time to process (including changing a fill color.....change C to 50, wait wait wait wait, then I can change y to 50 , wait wait wait wait ten I can change next color.)
    Impossible to work with
    What can I do?

I realise this post is a little old, but for those that stumble apon this looking for solutions or ideas for fixes here's my 2 cents,
I'm experiencing the same issues as described. I've tried a host of other fixes related to fonts, clearing AI cache, booting into safe mode to test, etc. So far the only thing that has brought AI back from comatose mode is turning off explorer. In Windows Task Manager, go to processes find explorer.exe and end task. WARNING: this will disable you Windows "window" interface as well as the windows startbar. You will need to use a third party dock software to easily navigate and use your PC. To turn explorer back on go to the applications window of the task manager (hit Ctrl + Alt + Del) click New Task and type "explorer.exe" in the "open" box and click OK. Please note that this suggestion is not a permanent fix but a work around for desparate times and perhaps a lead on a fix for someone trying to get to the bottom of this annoying issue.

  • ITunes on iMac imports CDs slow and eventually stops

I have 2 iMacs and one Macbook. Both iMacs are Snow Leopard, the Macbook is just Leopard. Only one of the iMacs has this problem. I'm running the latest iTunes and I take in all Apple supplied updates every week.
This problem existed on the previous version of iTunes (9) and it did not get better after upgrading to version 10.
There are actually several problems, and they are quite bizarre. No other posting in the Forums seems to cover them.
    1) When I import a CD, it starts out OK. Kind of slow, like 3x, 4x but it moves for a song or two. Then the import progress bar stops updating. It seems to freeze. If you touch the mouse, the bar jumps way ahead, or even to the next song. Then it just sits there again. If you move the mouse continuously you can eventually get the thing up to 6x or 8x and it will finish. If you don't move the mouse, it eventually just goes to sleep and never finishes. There is a workaround for this - if you play a song from your library while you are importing the CD then it will eventually finish. The progress bar retains its weird non-linear behavior, but it will finish and eject the CD. It never gets faster than about 8x and my other iMac can import at about 20x.
    2) Sometimes when I start playing a song from my library (not importing a CD at this time) the progress bar jumps all over the place. It will be 30 seconds into a song and then it flashes back to 2 seconds, then ahead to 32, then back, etc. The audio during this time is fine it does not actually rewind the music.
    3) I also have an Airport Express. When I set this machine up to play through the AE it will play OK for 10 or 15 minutes. Then it will just stop. You cannot click anything to make it responsive. You have to right-click on the iTunes icon and do a force quit. Other machines in the house can play through the AE for hours with no dropouts. There is good network connectivity, the machines are only 15 feet apart.
If the problem was just the importing of CDs, it might seem like a hardware problem. But I have these other 2 problems and they have nothing to do with the CD. The only constant is iTunes. The rest of the apps on the box Mail, Safari, Firefox, etc. seem fine. There are no glitches in them.
Should I reload iTunes completely ? If I do that will my library be lost ?
Theoretically I do have a saved copy of the library in my Time Capsule.

This was resolved with a hardware repair. The USB port was shorted causing an interrupt storm and affected iTunes.

  • Need help fixing my 3 Gen IPAD, FACETIME and iMESSAGES stopped working for me. Help please... more info to follow.

FT and iMessages used to work for me, but when I try to sign into them, it kicks me back to the sign in screen 9 out of ten times saying..."You were signed out of FaceTime because your AppleID or password changed. Sign in to turn on FaceTime.
When it DOES eventually let me through, either via restart/reset it tries to verify my email... fails... then says it sent an e-mail to my account, which never arrives. I tried resetting my security questions and I do get e-mails when I go that route. Still no fix.
My account still works via the app store/itunes/apple webpage, etc.
I've tried calling support and they seemed stumped. Trying re-syncing, hard reset...resetting all my settings, I have time auto-synced... still no remedy. Please help. Bought this specifically for Facetime and now I can't even get that to work.

OK, the fix was frustratingly easy.
My Apple ID is an old @mac.com address which is non functioning. This email address was also sitting in "alternate email addresses" within my Apple ID settings page. I deleted it and FaceTime and iMessage now work.
I went to www.appleid.apple.com and logged in using my normal Apple ID credentials. I then made sure that ANY alternate email addresses listed under the Apple ID were in fact verifed. Sitting happily in there under "Alternate Email Address" was the @mac.com which was the non-functioning email address. I deleted and it's all now working. I also deleted some other alternate email addresses that were sitting in there.
The only other suggestion from Apple was to create a separate Apple ID specifically for the FaceTime / iMessage functionality.
They said the conflict probably arose from the fact that the Apple ID was associated with an alternate email address which could NOT be verified.
I have to hand it to the Senior Tech Analysist from Apple in Brisbane. Very helpful, very friendly and their follow-through and ownership of my problem were very good.

  • Time Capsule Backup gets slower and finally stops!!! HELP!

    Hi,
I am using since a view years an Airport Extreme (as base station, connected to the internet modem) and an Airport Express as network extension.
Because of backup requirements I bought some days ago a 1GB Timecapsule and setup the network "from the scratch". Now the Timecapsule is connected to the internet modem as primarily base station and the other two devises help to extend the network all over my house. This is working fine.
BUT: the backup with time machine does not work. I started with my MacBook with 57GB data to be backuped. The process started via air promising (quite fast), but slowed down later on. And finally, it breaks up, often even with restarting the whole laptop. I did not yet succeed in the initial backup of this MacBook!
Can anyone help me? Can I do something wrong with the standard adjustments on the network via the Airport Utility SW? Why is the data transfer slowing down?
Funny enough, I had a similar effect some months age when I tried to use an external HD connected to my MacMini. At that point in time I thought that the issue is because of using a separate MacMini or a separate, external HD. That was also the reason why I decided to buy the integrated system from Apple: Time Capsule.

Haha though it would seem that the community forum has been linked to the "Trial" version of the new site - which seems to have some broken links within the header itself.
    Normal New BT website: http://home.bt.com
    Trial New BT Website: http://trial-home.bt.com
As you can see the links in the header point towards the http://trial-home.bt.com ....... website.
    Cheers

  • I have had problems with slow and non-responding Internet using Safari.

While my Windows-based laptop and iPhone access the Internet fine, we are having difficulties with our iMac accessing the Internet and, if we do get on, it is extremely slow.

If you mean movies you have exported from iMovie HD, those can be imported easily. If you mean iMovie HD projects opening in iMovie '11, I don't see many people have much success with that.

  • My mac has become quite slow and just stops working all of a sudden if 3-4 applications are opened simultaneously with that round mouse pointer. What should I do ?

Please assist me in overcoming this problem.

Hi, this seems like a very annoying problem. Unfortunatly, the community will need some more information to help assist you with this problem. Such as:
    1) What programs? Are they resource intensive? I mean, if you are trying to run 4 video games or programs like photoshop and 3dsmax forget about it. And if you have 4 programs ALL attempting to write large amounts to the disk it will yeild a similar result. Usually large amounts of I/O are murder on PC's (by which I mean personal computers...), and of course if you don't have enough RAM its a moot point.
    2) What are your specs? How much RAM do you have? What is the size of your virtual memory (page file)?
    3) Have you cleared the various caches mac's have? I can't direct you to any good third party programs for mac's but I am sure there is a simple cache cleaner within your system.

    Stop working and lag awfully.

There are some compatibility issues between the latest Flash player and some Firefox add-ons or settings. Could you see whether anything in this article helps: [[Flash 11.3 doesn't load video in Firefox]].
You might also consider disabling the new protected mode in Flash 11.3. See this support article from Adobe under the heading "Last Resort": [http://forums.adobe.com/message/4468493 Adobe Forums: How do I troubleshoot Flash Player's protected mode for Firefox?]
