Removing novelty voices

We have a grant-funded project that uses text to speech with English Language Learners in middle school. We'd like to remove the novelty voices from the systems on our new laptops so students only have access to the Cepstral Voices we bought for them to use.
How can we remove certain voices safely from the system?

Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
The voice files seem to be in /System/Library/Speech/Voices . Try moving the ones you don't want to another place on the disk. Test the system, then delete the moved voice files. I'd keep one copy of the deleted voice files in case you ever want to restore them.
You might also consider locking the System Preferences so that a password is required to change the voice selected in the Speech panel. See the Security panel, "Require a password to unlock each System Preferences pane". For that matter, for such users you should lock as much as possible.

I would like to ask you guys here at Nokia why you can't remove the voice mail box phone number after setting it the first time. Why is it so?
To reproduce this "bug" go Menu -> Messaging -> Voice call messages -> Voice mailbox no.
Set the voice mailbox number.
Then, try to restore the settings to what it was originally.
It won't work.
I have tried this on several newer Nokia phones.
Why is it so? Could "OK" maybe move to the left soft key? No. Of course not.
Did you know everyone doesn't have voicemail?
Therefore some users use the 1 key as any other quick dial key.
I suppose that in any good user interface you should be able to restore a setting to it's original setting. Not being able to do so without any warning of some kind is simply ridiculous.
If there is some other limitation that prevents you from doing this, please let me know.

Removing a voice from audio

I have Final Cut Studio, including Soundtrack Pro. On my film I'm making, a person - only heard, not seen - interviews someone (seen/heard). All sound is on one layer, from one built in microphone. I need to replace the voice of the interviewer to my own. Step one would be to remove the voice. I supposed it would be just like filtering noise, which I've seen done, with Soundtrack Pro I believe. How do I do this? Sorry if basic. I'm very rusty with everything, am completely new to Soundtrack Pro (used Soundtrack minimally as well). Any help is appreciated.

Unfortunately, you can't remove a voice like you can remove noise. What I suggest you to do is this: First, record your voice where you need it to be. Second, edit the original track to remove the other voice. Now, the problem is the ambience is cut off when there's your voice instead of the original one. Find a spot where there's only ambient noise (room tone) and use the Ambient noise tools in STP to make a fingerprint of that. Now, copy the room tone on a new track under your own voice. Extend the ambient noise a little bit before and after your voice to make sure you can crossfade the room tone with the original track.

I have a very frustrating situation, and I really do not know how to go about solving the problem, as my knowledge of soundtrack is limited. I have a recording of a fair event, during which there are short interviews of few people to the camera. Unfortunately the sound of the person who is talking to the camera is spoiled by the sound of the general people voice noise, which is in the background (the sound that you get during big public events in the enclosed space). I need to achieve a clear sound (as much as it is possible) of the person who is talking to the camera and then mix it with some other audio (music track). I have tried using EQ but it didn’t help that much, I am guessing because the noise in the background is people talking which maybe has the same frequency as the person who is talking to the camera.
I have spent hours on this and still cant fix it, but I have a feeling that it must be quite simple to do? I am not quite sure how to use the noise reduction function in soundtrack and if that would be the way to go about it?
Could someone please help me???

I don't like to disagree with people who are trying to be helpful, but I wouldn't have much hope in this working. It is designed to remove broadband noise that can be separated out from the sound you want to retain. In your scenario there isn't enough separation between the background and the main voice to not kill the patient with the operation.
Nevertheless if you want to try it, here are the instructions.
Open the file in the Audio Editor.
Select an area of the file that only has background talking, where there is no main speaker present.
Make the menu selection *Process>Noise Reduction>Set Noise Print*
Now select the whole file
Make the menu selection *Process>Noise Reduction>Reduce Noise* - that will bring up this plug-in control. Adjust the parameters, click the play button and see if it helps. The threshold and amount will have the most effect, the tone control may help. It may help to listen only to what is being removed by checking the Noise Only box. If you get something you like, then click the Apply Button.

Even though you can undo this you should make a backup before you change your files.

Remove n91 voice tag

I'm trying to stop the voice tag from saying contacts name when some calls since it is very annoying and I can already see why is calling anyway. I have turned off the synthesizer and reset the voice adaptions, however, both methods did not work. Is there any way to fully remove the service?

You need to change the setting in the profile you are using. Go to profiles, selectthe profole you are using and personalize (edit) it. See the field called "say callers name"..set to off

Does anyone know if you can remove the voice in a song to make it an instrumental??? Thanks

In general, there is a certain way to do that. There are programs that can remove the vocals from the song if the song is in stereo, and the voice is mixed "in the middle" and the rest of the instruments are not. The programs calculate the wave that is common between the two channels and remove it. I do not know if GB can do that, and I am almost certain that it can't.

Voice control does not kick in place of SIRI when there is no internet connection

i have an iPhone 4s. i mainly use WIFI at both home and work. and am quite happy with SIRI. but when i leave home for work or am on my way back home after work quite often i press and hold the volume button to give voice command to call my wife. but SIRI does not work!
well, because SIRI needs internet connection and i dont bother using mobile internet (cause then i will need to turn on 3G which drains my battery like nothing on earth) it can not work.
but why does not my ordinary voice control kick in? since 4S is such a great gadget and is so smart in every way (apart from the pictures taken with the volume button could not be turned to adjust orientation in windows!) i was expecting this would be a normal thing to expect from it.
anyways, hope someday they would fix this.

I'm assuming you can either use Siri or Voice Control, but not both. I think if you turn Siri on the activation used to use Siri is removed from Voice Control and vice versa. This is just my own theory. Maybe a future software update might allow this.

"Voice System Error" on my N95!

Hi, I am not able to use voice Recognition dialing with my Nokia N95 as I get this error : "Voice system Error".
This occurs when I long press contacts for example.
Does anyone know how to resolve this problem?

I've just fixed a similar, but not identical, problem on my N95 . This fix is quick and easy and doesn't need a firmware install, hard reset or rebuild. Here's what I posted to another forum:
Managed to figure out how to fix this on my N95 with a bit of research and tinkering...
First, select Tools / Utilities / Voice Comm. / Settings / Remove voice adapts. Then selectTools / Settings / General / Personalisation / Language / Phone Language and set it to another language. You'll be asked to restart the phone. Once restarted, remove the voice adaptations again. Now change the language back to your own and restart again. Then reset the voice adaptations again. Now try the voice command button again - it should work. I think the resetting voice adaptations bit may be unnecessary, but definitely the language change is what sorted it for me.
Failing this, try turning off the voice synthesiser in voice command settings. It will still take voice commands but won't read stuff out.
Pleased I fixed something for once, without the need for a hard reset and rebuild.
