Removing old Exchange 2007

Last year I upgraded to Exchange 2010 & all has been working fine.
This year I plan to upgrade to 2013.
Last year I moved everything over to exchange 2010 but could not completely remove all roles from old server which by this time was virtualised. This server has been off for 12 months.
In the exchange management console window on 2010 I can see in the server summary window that it thinks there is still an exchange 2007 server.
I have fired back up my old virtualised version of 2007 & tried to perform add remove roles as it still thinks it has a mailbox role. This fails saying it cannot find it self.
How do I get rid of this server so I can progress with upgrade to latest version?
I have checked ADSIEDIT & cannot see an entry for my old server.
Please help

Unlike Exchange 2003, manual
removal of Exchange 2007 is not supported. However, take a look at these threads..

  • Deleting the old Exchange 2007 mailbox entry safely from ADSI Edit ?

    Hi,
I'm having problem with the old Exchange maiilbox 2007 CCR cluster name still showing whenever I use the Powershell script:
Get-MailboxServer | Select Name, AdminDisplayVersion, ServerRole, ExchangeVersion, IsValid, ExchangeLegacyServerRole, DistinguishedName
Can anyone please assist me what to backup first before so that I can safely remove / delete the following highlighted entry from my domain controller:
Is that the correct location where I can safely delete the old Exchange Server mailbox entry ? All of our Exchange Servers are 2010 SP2.
There is also the computer object named MAILBOX when I do the search in
Active Directory Users & Computers console.
So can anyone please clarify if this is the best and safest way to do without causing any email downtime ?
    /* Server Support Specialist */

    Hey there,
You need to ensure that you have the following backups in order to proceed with the decommissioning process:
    1. System State Backup of your Active directory
    2. Exchange Database Flat file Backup
    3. Run ExBPA Report and Export the Report for future reference.
    4. Go to Registry Editor and Export “My Computer” as Registry backup.
Yes you are at the right location to safely delete the old Exchange Server mailbox entry .
The best & cleanest way is to delete the whole server object. This wouldn't break your Exchange 2010 configuration. But make sure you don't delete the “Servers” folder itself.
Feel free to revert back for further queries
    Thanks

The services that you need to move are:
    Offline address book
    Public Folders
    System mailboxes (hidden)

  • Removing old exchange 2003 routing groups from Exchange 2010.

I have migrated over to Exchange 2010(server2008) from Exchange 2003(SBS2003). I've also already run the uninstall for exchange 2003 on the old SBS 2003 server. The old server itself is still running but exchange has been removed and once I get this fixed
I plan to fully remove the old SBS server.
I now get event ID 5020 and 5006 throughout the day on the new server. From what I've read, this happens because the old routing group connectors still exist.
    If I run Get-ExchangeServer I get
    Name                Site                 ServerRole  Edition     AdminDisplayVersion
    SERVER                                   None
    Standard    Version 6.5 (Bui...
    SERVER2008          hr.local/Configur... Mailbox,... Standard    Version 14.0 (Bu...
Am I correct in assuming that the way to fix this now is to go into ADSI edit and delete records under CN=First Administrative Groups? As in delete CN=Routing Groups and CN=Servers and everything under both of those? I'd try this myself but I'm not aware
of any way to restore those records easily if I'm wrong.
    Event ID 5006
Cannot find route to Mailbox Server CN=SERVER,CN=Servers,CN=first administrative group,CN=Administrative Groups,CN=HR,CN=Microsoft Exchange,CN=Services,CN=Configuration,DC=hr,DC=local for store CN=Public Folder Store (SERVER),CN=First Storage Group,CN=InformationStore,CN=SERVER,CN=Servers,CN=first

Event ID 5020The topology doesn't contain a route to Exchange 2000 Server or Exchange Server 2003 server.hr.local in Routing Group CN=first routing group,CN=Routing Groups,CN=first administrative group,CN=Administrative
Groups,CN=HR,CN=Microsoft Exchange,CN=Services,CN=Configuration,DC=hr,DC=local in routing tables with the timestamp 27/09/2014 1:57:43 PM.

Get-RoutingGroupConnector shows nothing. As for the servers group. It has the old server under it as shown in the image I posted above. That's actually what stops me from just deleting it because other guides have said not to delete it if an old server
    is listed.
Is the SBS2003 server listed because I haven't ran DCPROMO to remove it from the network yet? I am planning to do this but was waiting till I cleaned up all the errors before transferring the 5 FMSO roles and running DCPROMO on the old server.
DCPROMO isn't related to this, no.
So you removed Exchange already? How? With setup? It should have removed the Exchange Server object then.
It is supported to remove Exchange 2003 manually if required with adsiedit:

same machine. Now it is installed but it shows the old server and database. How can I remove it form this environment.
    Thanks

    Hi,
Kindly let me know, you have reinstalled Exchange 2013 or have you run disaster recovery of Exchange 2010.

  • Old Exchange 2007 is not moving MAPI clients to new server

    Good Afternoon all,
I am in the process of moving from exchange 2007 to 2010.  I thought I read somewhere that Outlook will figure out in the background that there is a new exchange box and when I've moved everyone to it that Outlook clients will automatically be mapped
to the new server.  I have moved 5 people over and all 5 did not re-map to the new exchange server.  I even tried closing/re-opening the app and rebooting the computer.  Did I miss a step somewhere?  Thanks in advance as I have 160 mailboxes
to move over.  I'd like to do it gradually if the system will allow me to rather than do it all in one go.
    Thanks
    David
EDIT--  My mobile users that I have moved are also reporting not getting email on their phones.  Mix of iphones and droid.  Tried rebooting and re-installing the Exchange profile.  Seems as though external access breaks as well.

    Hi There!!!!
In Exchange 2010, clients do not connect directly to the mailbox role, they go through the
CAS role, so it sounds like you need to set the RPCClientAccessServer to point to the new Exchange 2010 server.
    Do this via PowerShell :
    GET-MAILBOXDATA | SET-MAILBOXDATABASE -RPCCLIENTACCESSSERVER <FQDN OF NEW CAS SERVER>
But as you have 160 mailboxes to migrate , which would be quite time consuming and needs lots
of efforts, so rather than opting manual way for migration  I would refer you to do this using any professional Migration Software like Stellar Mailbox Extractor for Exchange Server, which can perform the Migration of 160 mailboxes in quick time.

  • Removing old exchange servers from AD with ADSIEdit

    Hello all,
I know this has been discussed MANY times but I wanted to know if the only place these are stored is under CN:Server under Microsoft Exchange? I know this isn't the recommended way but I need to get these removed so I can re-use the old names.

    CN=configuration,DC=.example,DC=.COM > CN=Services > CN=Microsoft Exchange > CN=Organization > CN= Administrative Groups > CN=(Groupname) > CN=Servers >
    Looks to be correct.
This is where you would the sevrers, but try add/remove programs first, if a uninstall has failed or hasnt move the object then delete from here.Sukh

  • Can't Remove Old Exchange Server

While going through ADSI edit, I noticed there is an entry for an old Mail Server object in the Domain Controllers OU. It only appears in ADSIEdit and not under AD Users and Computers and it didn't show under ntdsutil either.
I have full permissions under the domain admin account, but when I try to delete it and I get the error:
    Operation Failed. Eror code: 0x5
    Access is denied.
    00000005: SecErr: DSID-031A121F, problem 4003
    (INSUFF_ACCESS_RIGHTS), data 0
I've heard that this can be caused by a former Trust Account that is no longer present. Under that objects properties, under the UserAccountControl attribute is 0x820 = (PASSWD_NOTREQD | INTERDOMAIN_TRUST_ACCOUNT)
    and also under sAMAccountType 805306370 = (TRUST_ACCOUNT)
I'm not sure what the best process would be to remove this object.
I appreciate any thoughts and future assistance!

    Hello,
If you are really sure that you want to remove this date, unchecked the
"Protect object from accidental deletion" and try again.

  • Removing Exchange 2007 from SBS 2008 after Migrating to Office 365 Mid Sized with DirSync and SSO

We have recently completed off a Migration of Exchange 2007 to Office 365 Mid Sized platform.
I now need to decomission the old SBS 2008 server as they have moved to a Windows Server 2012 R2 server setup for DC, File and print and application servers.
I need to know what are the ramifications of removing the Exchange 2007 server from the SBS 2008 server and will this remove the LegacyDN details from AD and cause any issues with internal emails between users using Outlook linked through to Office365.
I understand that after removing Exchange 2007 there will be no friendly GUI to update and maintain proxyAddress, targetAddress and LegacyDN addresses, I am comfortable doing this in ADSI edit or with a script.
Will this remove the x500 addresses relating to the on premise Exchange Orgainisation and just leave behind the x500 addresses for Exchange Labs which I assume is the x500 addresses for the Azure AD intergration for Office365.

    Hi ,
Thank you for posting your issue in the forum.
I am trying to involve someone familiar with this topic to further look at this issue. There might be some time delay. Appreciate your patience.
Thank you for your understanding and support.

  • Remove Exchange 2007 from an Exchange 2013 coexistence.

    Hey everyone,
I've just installed Exchange 2013 on a new server and all is working great.  It is currently in coexistence with our old Exchange 2007 server.  I've since shut the server down and Exchange 2013 has been working without issue.  However, I haven't
been able to find any articles on this matter so I figured I would ask the question here.
How do you remove Exchange 2007 from the coexistence.  Do I just uninstall Exchange 2007 from the old server and it will remove itself from the server and the domain?  Any help/link on this matter would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Chris

    Hi Simon,
I am about to do the same exercise as Chris,  I just would like some clarity.
    1) When you say mailbox Database, do you mean make sure there are no more mailboxes that you want to move over, or are you actually meaning delete the physical DB on the exchange 2007 server.
    2) If there is no use of public folders does anything need to happen?
    Thanks,
    Terry

  • Remove Exchange 2007

    Hi,
I just moved all mailboxes from exchange 2007 to Office 365 with Exchange 2010 Hybrid setup. I believe that all local Exchange 2007 contact list and Distribution Group are syncing from Dirsyc tool. It is no migration for this type object. From now, we will
decide to remove Exchange 2007 from network. What we need to do before to safety remove the Exchange 2007 Server ?
    thanks
    Keith

    Hi Keith,
Agree with both MAS and Gulab Prasad.
Please shut down Exchange 2007 and monitor whether the new environment works well.
Then, please remove Exchange 2007 from a server by using Setup Wizard. Details to see:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb123893(EXCHG.80).aspx
(Optional) Last, remove the Exchange 2007 administrative group by using ADSIEdit. The Exchange 2007 administrative group is called
    Exchange Administrative Group (FYDIBOHF23SPDLT)

  • Remnants of old Exchange server after migration

Migrated to 2010 and all is well however, the old Exchange server is still referenced in some places. The actual server itself has been decommissioned and re-purposed but has the same fqdn just is not running Exchange 2007 anymore.
How to I manually remove all aspects of the old server without interrupting services on the new 2010 server

    Hi Wrangler,
Remove the Exchange 2007 server from Active Directory
    a.       Launch ADSI Editor
    b.      Expand to Configuration Container->CN=Configuration, DC=
    Domain_Name ,DC=com->CN=Services ->CN=Microsoft Exchange->CN=
    Your_Organization_Name->CN=Administrative Groups ->CN= Your_Administrative_Group_Name->CN=Servers
    c.       Right-click old Exchange 2007 server object, and select “Delete”
    d.      Click “Yes” in every jumped windows that prompts you to confirm the deletion

  • Powershell command to migrate Exchange 2007 mailbox databases with a legacy name, & import them into a new 2007 instance, with a new name.

Hi All. I am currently at the later stage of provisioning a new CCR Exchange 2007 migration (to
virtualise old Exchange 2007 hardware) for 5,000 users & have a quick question.
I have created around 15 newly named storage groups, & have named 1 new DB per group, with the same name (let's say New-DB-1), residing within them.  The problem I have, is the old legacy DB's have different names (let's say Old-DB-1) & I need
to import them into the new storage groups, to match the new names. So far I can import/export between old & new OK if both old & new DB names\folders etc. names marry up perfectly, but are unable to if there not the same. Does anyone have any thoughts
on how best to tackle this, as this is one of the final hurdles stopping the migration? Many Thanks, John

    Hi All
    Many Thanks for the feedback.
The terminology 'migrate' was used based around the fact I will be decommissioning the old 2007 physical environment. This is after moving all DB's over to the new newly created Virtual environment that will host all roles.
The solution I ended up using yesterday, was the following:
    1) Dismounted the relevant named DB (NEWDB) in the new environment.
    2) I then ticked the 'This database can be overwritten by a restore option' box.
    3) Copied over the old named DB (OLDDB) to the same location, & overwrote using the new name (NEWDB).
    4) Re-mounted the (NEWDB).
    5) Ran the following 2 PowerShell commands:
     Get-mailbox –database OLDDB | move-mailbox –targetdatabase NEWDB -configurationonly:$true
     Get-MailboxDatabase NEWDB | ResetSearchIndex.ps1 -force
    6) Checked to make sure the clients were working ok, in the now the new (NEWDB) environment.
Rich: Many thanks for your PS script, which I will test with future DB moves & provide feedback

    John.

  • Exchange 2010 transfer of the license and uninstall old Exchange

    Hello everyone,
I had some problems with my old Exchange 2010 as it was freezing from time to time. I decided to install a new Exchang 2010 server. I transferred mailboxes, MX record stays the same and I routed all e-mails to the new server now. I disconnected other server
from the network to test is everything working fine and so far so good.
My bigger concerns are following now:
    a) how to transfer license as I wanna use the same license key which old server uses.
    b) How to Uninstall old Exchange 2010 server.
In regards to license transfer I don't want to get to the point where I am going to get message that I used the same license key on another server. Do I have to deactivate license on the old server? How do I do that. Maybe uninstallation of it will send
a signal to Microsoft that license is gone. Has anyone come across this kind of issue? So what do you think should I uninstall old server first before I enter this license?
In regards to my second question which is related to the first one. How do I properly remove old Exchange 2010 server. I found some instructions that I should just go to "programs and features" and uninstall it this way or run a setup from CD.
Other instructions says that I should uninstall database over power shell and uninstall public folders etc. I would like to do it as clean as possible as I don't want my new exchange or any of DCs to look for missing Exchange later. Which option properly uninstalls
Exchange 2010 from my domain and from AD. I wanted to add that my Exchange2010 are on Windows Server 2008 R2.
I just wanted to add that I phoned Microsoft to ask about it but they said that I have to pay for support otherwise they can't help me. What would you do first? license or uinstallation of old Exchange 2010? I still have over 100 days of trial on new build
    server.

    Hi,
    1. Arbitration mailbox is used to store organization-wide data such as administrator audit logs, metadata for eDiscovery searches, and Unified Messaging data. To avoid more issues, we recommend to move the mailboxes. And here is a reference about how to
    move arbitration mailboxes:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/3912.exchange-2010-how-to-delete-the-first-database-and-move-the-system-mailboxes.aspx
    2. If the public folders won’t be used in the new environment, we don’t need to move them.
    3. For the issue whether the license can be used twice, we recommend you to contact with Microsoft Customer Service to confirm.
    4. By default, when Exchange 2010 is installed, OAB is created in the default internal Web site in Internet Information Services (IIS).

  • Exchange 2007 Decommissioning, post Office 365 migration

    Hello,
We have four Exchange 2007 servers in four different sites, single AD.  All four Exchange servers are CAS, Mailbox, Hub, secondary domain controllers.  We have migrated to Office 365 successfully, and would like to remove the Exchange 2007 servers.
I have stopped the Exchange services on all four for at least a week and tested Office 365 mail flow with no issues.  My questions are:
    1) Can I expect to simply uninstall Exchange 2007 from each server, one by one, without a negative impact to Active Directory?
    2) Should/can the many Mailbox Databases be deleted prior to uninstalling Exchange 2007?  Not all mailboxes had to be migrated to Office 365, and they contain data that we no longer need.
If there is a 'safe' method to remove Exchange in a multi-site setup, I would prefer to try that before having to dig through ADSIedit.
    Thank you in advance.

    Hi Chase,
    here's an
official guide for uninstalling Exchange 2007. Please also note the other documents in the same library directory (see navigation pane to the left).
