Removing partition without loosing data.

I have two partitions on my HD. One has OSX and one has XP on it. Im not bothered about the XP one anymore and want to reformat it for OSX, however can i add it back to my OSX partition (effectively having an unpartitioned drive) without erasing the data on my OSX partition?

Thanks V.K.
I have another question. Can i copy all the files on the XP partition to a NFS mac formatted external drive, and then later copy them back to an NTFS partition and still boot XP? Or do i have to use a cloning software like Winclone?

    The only way to unlock it is to follow the steps in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1212 or one of the similar knowledge base articles, which includes restoring the device.  If you have a current backup you can do that and remove the passcode.

    Hello all
    I have a Toshiba Satellite L300-110
    The question is how can I recover my laptop with the recovery DVD without lose any data located in the hard disk drive?

    Hello
    A recovery installation from the recovery disk without loosing data on the HDD isnt possible. If you use the Toshiba recovery disk the whole HDD will be formatted so you must backup the data first.
    The only way I know is to use the HDD recovery function in the advanced boot menu. The HDD recovery function formats only the first partition of the notebook and all data that you have stored on the second partition are available after recovery.

  • I have macbook pro 13.3 inch ..mac os lion 10.7.5   i want to tranfer data from macbook to external hard disk  without loosing data which in already in extrnl drive

    You don't have to change NTFS to FAT.
    Just install Paragon NTFS and you'll be able to transfer your data to your external HDD even if it is NTFS.

    You have to off load and backup then.
    don't have backup drive ?
    Get one.
    Want another option? Paragon NTFS for OS X will provide write function to your drive, works with the most PC cases and drives (not all NTFS drivers for OS X do) and does so with fast I/O and low overhead.
    Not sure about using Seagate GoFlex as I seem to recall a number of threads reporting problems.
    Windows can do a convert -fs to NTFS just never tried the reverse from NTFS to FAT32 but I would not use FAT. I'd either erase and reload and use as Mac HFS Extended; or if you actually do need to use it with a PC user running Windows, the driver would be handy and better.
    Or your PC w/ Windows there are HFS drivers for Windows to mount and WRITE to a Mac formatted drive under Windows. There MacDrive has more and better support feature set.

    What exactly are you seeing on the phone's screen ? If the iTunes icon and cable then the phone is in recovery mode, in which case it's too late to take a new backup or to copy any content off the phone - you will have to connect the phone to your computer's iTunes and reset it back to factory defaults, after which you can restore to the last backup that you took or just resync your content to it

    You simply sync the iPad to the new computer. It will tell you that it is already synced with another one though, and will give you the option to erase it or transfer its contents to the new one. An iPad can only be synced with one computer at a time.
    Beware that only your iTunes and App Store purchases will sync. If your iTunes library contained music obtained from other sources, you have to find a way to transfer them directly from your sick computer to the new one.
    I hope your new computer is a Mac, a replacement PC will eventually suffer the same fate.

  • How do i pgrade my os without loosing data or using extra hdd? Thanks

    How do i pgrade my os without loosing data or using extra hdd? Thanks

    Yes, you can do that, but it is inadvisable to do so without a safety backup. But that's your choice, which means there is no guarantee you won't have a problem.
    First thing you should do:
    Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
    Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
    You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
    After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mavericks if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion or Mavericks
    To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8, Lion, or Mountain Lion installed. Purchase and download Mavericks (Free) from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
         OS X Mavericks- System Requirements
           Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mavericks
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) —
                 Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
    To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
    Are my applications compatible?
             See App Compatibility Table — RoaringApps.
    Upgrading to Lion
    If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
    You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

    >Find this guide for HDD recovery procedure
    >http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/HTD1303440001R01.htm
    >What steps should I follow?
    As far as I know on second HDD partition in folder HDDRecovery is saved recovery image. When you start HDD recovery installation (F8 at start-up) recovery image from partition D will be installed on partition C. In this case partition D will not be deleted. Just partition C will be formatted before recovery image installation starts.
    Just use F8 option and go to repair my computer. Just follow menu on the screen and choose option Recovery of factory default software.
    > 2 If HDD is defective, how can I re-install supplied OS (vista) to a new HDD ?
    After reading this question I see you didnt read users manuals document. You should create recovery media (recovery DVD) and this recovery DVD you can use for recovery image installation if there is some problem with HDD or you want to install original recovery image on new HDD.
    > 3 Unrelated to the above, can I update to Windows 7 (clean install) 32 or 64bit version?
    Of course you can do this. Visit please Toshiba download page on http://www.toshiba.eu/innovation/download_drivers_bios.jsp and check if all drivers, tools and utilities are available there. Of course before you do this, create recovery DVD.
    If you have more questions you are welcome.

  • How to sync iphone on new iMac, coming from Vista, without loosing data?

    Hello people,
    I'm in an awkward situation as i think most people are when dealing with this kind of problem. I searched the forum for something like this but with no success.
    So my question in detail is: I came from a PC world, with windows vista and now i'm a new Mac fan. Bought a new iPhone and loved the device so much that i had to try some Mac notebooks and iMacs to see what's what. And guess what after 1 month i ended up with a new iMac...and so far i love it even though i still have alot to learn in OS X. Since i had my iPhone 3G synced with my old PC with ITunes i can't sync now with my new iMac without loosing everything on it, including photos, applications, music and other stuff.
    So how can i sync it without loosing that data????
    I googled on the net for an answer and i found some answers to a method that would allow to further sync my iPhone and still keep the actual data in it. In other words make iTunes ignore the existing data in it, but i found it rather too much of a hassle, having to modify strings of data in some files in the Library.
    Also i found another method but that might work only from a windows machine to another windows machine, with itunes library exporter.
    So knowing my situation what would you do?
    PS: IMHO syncing to erasing all data is NOT an option. let's say that i would venture in creating new photo albums to sync them, and put the music back but what about the apps? I bought so many of them and some with vital information/settings that i could simply not bare having them deleted.
    HELP PLS!

    App settings and data created and stored by a 3rd party app are not stored with the application in your iTunes library. 3rd party app settings and data are stored with the app on your iPhone and included with your iPhone's backup - which is created and maintained by iTunes during the sync process.
    Once again - you need to transfer your iTunes folder and library from your PC to your Mac. In case you missed it - your need to transfer your iTunes folder and library from your PC to your Mac. All apps downloaded via iTunes or via your iPhone should be in your iTunes library. App settings and data created and stored by an app are stored with the app on your iPhone and included with your iPhone's backup.
    When syncing with another computer - even with the same iTunes library and iTunes account, your iPhone will be erased of all iTunes content but iTunes should create a backup of your iPhone first - which includes settings and data created by a 3rd party app. You can always manually create a backup for your iPhone with iTunes on your Mac before syncing.
    Your iPhone will be erased of all iTunes content first, followed by selected iTunes content via your iTunes sync preferences being re-transferred to your iPhone. If any 3rd party app settings or data is lost, you can restore your iPhone with iTunes from your iPhone's backup.

  • How to sychronize app with a new library without loosing data?

    Hi,
    I had to re-install my SO and now I have to synchronize my ipod touch with a new itunes library, itunes tells me that if I do this i'll loose al apps and data that i have on my ipod, how can I transfer app and data from the ipod to my pc and synchronize without loosing apps and data?

    Wow, you Apple lemmings are great.  Yes, I do backup, brilliant of me, huh?  Thanks for the productive input.
    Are any of your really going to argue in favor of the requirement that you sync with one itunes account on one computer?  If so, please enlighten me as to why this is a great idea.  I love the iPad but hate that it is permanently tethered to itunes.  In fact, the thing will not work without an itunes account.  This is one reason I don't have an iphone and stick with android.  The android acts as its own hard drive.  It's very simple to save, backup and swap files with any computer.
    But back to the issue at hand, what if one doesn't backup?  Or if they did, the file was corrupt or the media they backed it to crashes?  The fact that the ipad cannot stand on its own is ridiculous.  By the way, I did restore my itunes folder but still get that notification that my ipad will be erased.  I'm sure though that I've added some apps since the last sync.  Are they going to be there when my ipad gets wiped out?  How does one know what has been saved?
    I love Apple products for its hardware but hate the software and all the control they have over it.  If I lose my apps, then so be it.  If there is any way around this, please let me know.

  • Inserting a column without loosing data

    Hi All,
    I have a table with more than 100 fields and about thousands of rows in it.
    The structure of the table needs changing such that a new field is to be added as the second last column. Please note that the last column is a field of data type LONG.
    The problem is how do I insert a column without loosing the old data in the table. Also please note that the customer is using Oracle 7 which I guess doesn't have a column insert facility.
    The above needs to be done only using SQL statements and no other oracle utility.
    Please help
    Thanks in advance
    Paresh Prabhu

    Hi,
    IIRC, in v7 you can rename a table, so the method would be:1/ Create the new table structure "NEW"
    2/ get a trace from all triggers, grants, etc set on the "OLD" table
    3/ grants on "NEW"
    4/ rename "OLD" to "TEMP"
    5/ insert into "NEW" all the content from "TEMP" (insert as select)
    6/ rename "NEW" to "OLD"
    7/ create triggers, indexes, ... on "OLD"
    8/ check "OLD" data against "TEMP" data
    9/ if OK, drop "TEMP"Of course it's been a loooooooooooooooooooooooong time since I last used release 7.* and there's no FM easily available on OTN (tahiti, ...) so you should test it thouroughly in test environment before doing it on prod system.
    HTH,
    Yoann.

    Saw this solution on another post about an iPad in a school environment. Might work on your iPad so you won't lose everything.

    ‘iPad is disabled’ fix without resetting using iTunes
    Today I met my match with an iPad that had a passcode entered too many times, resulting in it displaying the message ‘iPad is disabled – Connect to iTunes’. This was a student iPad and since they use Notability for most of their work there was a chance that her files were not all backed up to the cloud. I really wanted to just re-activate the iPad instead of totally resetting it back to our default image.
    I reached out to my PLN on Twitter and had some help from a few people through retweets and a couple of clarification tweets. I love that so many are willing to help out so quickly. Through this I also learned that I look like Lt. Riker from Star Trek (thanks @FillineMachine).
    Through some trial and error (and a little sheer luck), I was able to reactivate the iPad without loosing any data. Note, this will only work on the computer it last synced with. Here’s how:
    1. Configurator is useless in reactivating a locked iPad. You will only be able to completely reformat the iPad using Configurator. If that’s ok with you, go for it – otherwise don’t waste your time trying to figure it out.
    2. Open iTunes with the iPad disconnected.
    3. Connect the iPad to the computer and wait for it to show up in the devices section in iTunes.
    4. Click on the iPad name when it appears and you will be given the option to restore a backup or setup as a new iPad (since it is locked).
    5. Click ‘Setup as new iPad’ and then click restore.
    6. The iPad will start backing up before it does the full restore and sync. CANCEL THE BACKUP IMMEDIATELY. You do this by clicking the small x in the status window in iTunes.
    7. When the backup cancels, it immediately starts syncing – cancel this as well using the same small x in the iTunes status window.
    8. The first stage in the restore process unlocks the iPad, you are basically just canceling out the restore process as soon as it reactivates the iPad.
    If done correctly, you will experience no data loss and the result will be a reactivated iPad. I have now tried this with about 5 iPads that were locked identically by students and each time it worked like a charm.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Try it and good luck. You have nothing more to lose if it doesn't work for you.
     Cheers, Tom
  • Syncing to new computer without loosing data
    My dell computer has recently crashed, so I purchased a Mac mini hoping it would last. Now my problem is that I have to sync my iPad to my new computer, without loosing any data that I have made I have spent over a year using my iPad and would not be a happy camper if I lost my app data and music. So how would you sync it to do that? I know you can do it I have done it before I just forgot how to do it though.
    You won't lose any apps or iTunes purchases since they are both linked to your Apple ID. As long as they are still available, you can simply download everything again.
    If you had music on your iPad that was not purchased from Apple, then the only place it exists now is on your iPad. Copying it to your Mini requires third party software.
    Read the following two links that address each one of these questions:
    iTunes: How to move your music to a new computer (read the "transferring purchases" section):
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
    Syncing to a new computer, crashed hard disk, no backup (this is for retaining your non-Apple music):
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3141
    If your Dell is "fried" its hard disk might still be readable. Buy an external enclosure for the drive and connect it to your Mac. There is a chance you might be able to transfer its iTunes Library to your new Mini using Migration Assistant.
    If its hard disk crashed that might not be an option.
