Removing photos in iphoto

Hello,
I have been reading some threads on how to delete photos from iphoto and to be honest it is making my head spin.  I need an answer in simple terms.  I have a ton of pics in iphoto and I need to remove them from my computer as they are taking up space because I have noticed it getting slow.  WHen I delete a photo, I have no idea where it goes and I do not see a trashcan.  I have iphoto 11.  When I hit delete does it actually delete from the computer?
If not, how do I permanently delete photos?  I have moved all of them to an external hard drive.  How do I check my available disk space?
How do I view my photos again that are on the external hard drive if I want to see them?  Can I do this in iphoto?  THis used to be so easy on my PC but I am totally confused on this Mac.
I also need to remove some videos.  I"m guessing I can't import anymore because I don't have enough space.
THank you!

What version of iPhoto and system are you running?  When you say you move photos do you really mean you moved the iPhoto Library package?
The iPhoto Trash bin is under the Recent section of iPhoto:
If you don't show anything under the Recent section then move the cursor to the right of Recent till Show appears. Click on Show and you'll get what's in the screenshot above.
Here's how to delete photos from an iPhoto LIbrary:
Deleting Photos from an iPhoto Library
1 - from an Event or the Photos mode: select the photo(s) and use the Delete key to move the photos to the trash bin. Then empty the iPhoto Trash bin as follows:
2 - from an album, smart album, book, slideshow, card, etc.: select the photo(s) and use the key combination of Command+Option+Delete to move the photos to the trash bin.  Then empty the trash bin as above.
NOTE: deleting a photo from an album, slideshow, book, etc., with only the Delete key only deletes that photo from that item. Deleting a photo from an Event deletes ALL occurences of that photo in the library.

    Hey William Dofflemyer,
Thanks for the question. I understand you would like to move some photos in your iPhoto library to free up space. The following article may help you with that:

  • How do I successfully remove photos from iPhoto?

Just bought a new MacBookPro.. very happy with it, everything except the iphoto application. When I insert my iphone, SD card it uploads my photos to iphoto.. which was great, till I discovered that there is NO obvious file location for my images, and iphoto isn't a folder..  I want a physical location for my photos. I want to be able to copy them, put them onto usb sticks, email them to family and friends.. they are MY photos after all
Every time I highlight images and try to copy them from iphoto, all I get is a filelocation marker / address. And I can't navigate to the location, because iphoto thinks it's a application, instead of a folder.. ? Very confusing.
Please tell me how I can recover my photos back from iphoto.. I'll only need to do it once, for maybe 30 or 40 pictures, and when I have them back, I can insert them into a new sub-folder within the pictures folder..

iPhoto is a program.  The iPhoto Library in your Pictures folder is basically the picture database that iPhoto accesses when it loads. When you click on that iPhoto Library it automatically launches iPhoto and loads all the pictures which are stored in there.  iPhoto really is as easy as drag and drop.  You can drag and drop photos in iPhoto and you can drag and drop them out of iPhoto to any location on the computer that pleases you.  iPhoto gives you many options for organizing, editing, and viewing your photots.  You should try playing around with all the features for a few days before you decide it doesn't do what you want it to do, because I believe it will do everything you need an more.  You just need to give it a chance and spend the 10-15 mins it takes to learn.

  • Is there an easy way to remove photos from iPhoto in the organizer?

I had been using iPhoto, but quit when I started using Photoshop Elements.  With version 9, it imported not only photos in my pictures but those in iPhoto.  So I have hundreds of duplicates I need to remove from the organizer.  Is there an easy way to find the ones from iPhoto so I can remove them?

OK, but is there a way to search/filter on a string in the location (i.e. iPhoto) so I could then easily know which are the duplicates I want to delete?
If there isn't, then it seems that I will have to delete the catalog and start from scratch again.  I had originally thought I didn't include iPhoto in the folders to search, but apparently it was somehow included so I will have to be more granular in what folders to search if I recreate the catalog again.

  • How do you remove photos permenantly from the hard drive using iPhoto 11?

Was just wondering if this is possible as removing photos in iphoto leaves them on the hard drive and I don't want to waste disk space.

btw it's set not to copy photos into the iphoto library
    This creates the problem.
When you opted to run a Referenced Library you took on the resposibility for managing the files. You get the from the camera to wherever you store them, and if you want to delete them you get them from there to the trash after deleting them from iPhoto.
iPhoto will not delete files it does not manage.

  • Remove photos to disc

I want to free up some space on my computer and would like to remove photos from iphoto and save them to disc.  I am not a tech person, so be kind,,,,how do I do this?  I have a Mac OSX 10.6.8. and iphoto is old 7.1.5.
thank you for any help you can offer.

Why not copy the iPhoto Library package to an external hard drive and run it from there.  That would give you access to all of your photos at all times and free up space on your boot drive at the same time.  The external HD should be formatted OS X Extended (journaled).
If you decide to go this route be sure to open the library on the external HD by launching iPhoto with the Option key held down and selecting the library on the EHD to make sure it's working as expected and all is well before deleting the library from your boot drive.
Otherwise, select the photos you want to put on disk and export to a folder on the Desktop via the File ➙ Export ➙ File Export menu option.  Set Kind = Originals to get the full resolution original version. The burn the folder to the disk (CD or DVD) in the normal way.

  • I am getting the following error message when I try to import photos into iPhoto from my camera: "/private/var/folders/GB/GBl4wh8-ELqUVMI5dO-ryU   TI/-Tmp-/iPhoto/DSCF2033.JPG".  Have already tried removing and reinstalling iPhoto to no avail.

Does this happen if you try to Import to Library within iPhoto, or is it when you connect your camera (and which is set to automatically use iPhoto) that this error message occurs?
If you open Image Capture > Preferences is iPhoto selected as the choice when a camera is connected?

  • Removed photos from internal hard drive (iPhoto), but it also removed from my external hard drive (iPhoto). HELP!!

I just bought a new external hard drive (Seagate) to move my numerous photos in iPhoto off my iMac. Set the EHD up to work on both Mac & PC. When I removed some of the photos in the iPhoto library on my internal drive it also removed them from the EHD (defeating the purpose of having the EHD).
After I have copied the photos from iPhoto to the EHD, how do I remove ONLY from the iPhoto internal hard drive (without losing them from both)???
Thanks in advance for your advice.

Did you use the File/Export menu function within iPhoto?
Did you look in the iPhoto Trash and your desktop Trash to see if the photos are still there?  Hopefully they are in the Trash and you can retrieve them and do a proper export to your external hard disk.

First off it would be good to learn how to use iPhoto - editing is one of the most basic operations - what version of iPhoto do you have? Have you watched the videos and looked in Help?
In general you select the photo can click edit - to straighten you use the "Straighten tool" - to remove areas around the photo you use the "crop tool"

  • How can I find and remove duplicate photos in iPhoto?

What is the best way to find and remove duplicate photos in iPhoto?

Are you seeing these duplicates in iPhoto or via the Finder?  If it's in the iPhoto window then you can use one of these applications to identify and remove duplicate photos from an iPhoto Library:
    iPhoto Library Manager - $29.95
Duplicate Cleaner for iPhoto - free
Duplicate Annihilator - $7.95 - only app able to detect duplicate thumbnail files or faces files when one library has been imported into another with iPhoto 8 and earlier.
PhotoSweeper - $9.95 - This app can search by comparing the image's bitmaps or histograms thus finding duplicates with different file names and dates.
I also prefer iPLM as it is more than just a dup finder.  It's a the most versatile iPhoto utility available.

  • IPhoto, moving photo's to my document folder, and remove thumbnails from iphoto.

iPhoto, moving photo's to my document folder, and remove thumbnails from iphoto.
How to? Please...I cut and paste items, it is removed from iphoto for a few seconds then they appear again.

The photos that are appearing on the mini - are they photos taken with an iPhone or iPad? If so, open System Preferences on both computers and select the iCloud tab. On the mini, click the Photos checkmark off and on the MBP click the Photos checkmark on (if it isn't already), then start iPhoto and select Preferences. Select the Photo Stream tab and make sure Photo Stream is on.

  • I can't remove photos from albums in iPhoto 9.4?  Any advice or tricks?

I can"t seem to be able to remove photos from albums in iphoto 9.4.  Can not move to trash or remove from album, What's up?  Any tricks or advice?

Make sure those are not smart albums you're trying to remove photos from.  As a test  launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos and check to see if the same problem persists. If it does  make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
NOTE 2:  In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.

  • Removing duplicate photos in iphoto

how do I remove duplicate photos in iphoto? easily.

I have the most recent copy of IPLM (3.8.6) but can't find a way to mark/remove duplicates using it.
That's not the most recent version of iPhoto Library Manager The current version is 4.0.2. I believe the ability to deal with duplicates came with v4.

  • Deleting photostream photos from Mac within iPhoto does not remove photos from all devices.

I have photostream activated on my iPhone 5s (iOS 8.1) to backup all my photos to iCloud. This works great! When I open iPhoto, the stream is automatically updated and my photos appear. If I also delete a photo from my iPhone, the stream is once again updated and the photo disappears.
However, if I delete the photo via iPhoto via the Photostream tab on my Mac, the photostream is not updated and the photo remains on my iPhone, as well as online via icloud.com. i.e it works one way, but not the other.
    Am I doing something wrong?

However, if I delete the photo via iPhoto via the Photostream tab on my Mac, the photostream is not updated and the photo remains on my iPhone, as well as online via icloud.com. i.e it works one way, but not the other.
When you delete a photo from "My Photo Stream" in the iCloud section in iPhoto on your Mac, it will be removed from "My Photo Stream" in iCloud, and should be removed from the Photo Stream on all devices. However, the photos already downloaded to the devices from My Photo Stream will not be deleted. If automatic download is enabled on your iPhone, the photos will stay on your iPhone,
