Removing power cord while asleep doesn't kill it, but it does if its on...?

My Macbook dies when I remove the power cord even with the battery fully charged. However it doesn't die if I remove the power cord when it's asleep, and it remains asleep. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can fix this? Thanks.

I've just spoken to Apple support who recommended resetting the SMC. Unfortunetely that has had no effect.

  • Boot issue after shutdown plus power - no problem after restart or after removing power cord

    Hello,
I have a Pavilion Elite m9275.nl desktop. I experience boot issues after a regular shut down.
    After a regular shut down and pressing the power button within a few seconds/minutes, it keeps hanging in the HP startup / BIOS screen, Windows 8 won't boot, the hard drive light doesn't flash;
    After a restart from Windows (instead of shut down) it boots correctly from the c-drive. No hard-drive problems at all;
After a shut down and removing the power cord for 10-15 minutes, it boots correctly from the c-drive. No hard-drive problems at all.
When the PC does not boot, F10 (to enter BIOS settings) does not work neither, so it seems to be a hardware or BIOS issue.
I already replaced the CMOS battery and already loaded default BIOS settings.
During a succesful boot or after pressing F10 (to enter BIOS settings) the screen shows some disk information right after the BIOS. This is the screen that says something like "press CTRL-I to start configuration utility". During a succesful boot the hard disk light flashes shortly before displaying that screen. During an unsuccesful boot the hard disk doesn't flash.
Before replacing a hardware component, I need to know what to replace...
Could it be the hard disk controller or hard disk is defect?
Where is the hard disk controller stored?
Can I upgrade the firmware of the hard disk controller?
BUT: why does it work when I remove the power cord for 15 minutes or after a restart (instead of a shutdown and than pressing power)?
    Many thanks in advance,
    Sjoerd-Jaap Westra

  • Macbook pro shutsdown after removing power cord

i have a core duo 15" macbook pro with 1.5 gb ram and whenever i remove the power cord it automatically shutsdown (battery is 100% full charge). i bought the machine on september and i started to have the same issue after 2 months of use.
i took it to an apple store and they said it is fine and they didnt find any thing wrong with the battery. now its starting to do it again and ive also noticed a slight bulge in the middle of the battery near the check charge button. also, i used the coconut battery app to check its life (not charge) and its down to 75% already and it also says the age of my mac is about 1000 months! (what the?).
i dont want to take it to the store again, so if i call apple support am i likely to swap my battery for a new one? im feeling that all these issues point to a faulty battery and i am entitled to a new one that enables me to use my laptop without the power cord plugged in all the time!
    thanks

I do have the same problem exactly.
My MacBook Pro shut down at full charge after I removed the power cord. It wouldn't turn on again even after a PMU-reset.
Curiously when I left it for a night and tried the next morning it worked perfectly fine. But the problem persisted. I called apple support and they sent me to the next store with a case ID. Now it's been in repair for a week but the technician cannot reproduce problem - that is very frustrating.
The problem seems to come up only after working with the MBP for an extended period of time with the power cord plugged in. A wild guess: the battery's internal security-circuitry may be faulty.
I hope this issue is resolved quickly - I became a laughing stock at work after I said I'd pay the high price for an MBP so that I get superior design and reliability and two weeks after the machine is in repair. Very annoying.

  • Plugging power cord while recording music - zero input

This is a strange problem when recording music via an interface:
When I am recording sound (Amadeus Pro) via a bus-powered firewire-S/PDIF-interface having my 2012 MBA on battery, and during recording I plug in the power cable, there is a complete zero input for one second or so (shown as -infin dB). Sometimes it goes with digital artefacts. Sometimes this also happens when doing other commands while recording.
    Possible reeasons:
    Core Audio goes down
power for the external interface goes off
I never had this problem with my earlier MBP and SL.
    Anybody?

Hi, Jim. Your guess is exactly correct. The DC-in card to which the port is soldered needs to be replaced. It will probably cost at least a couple of hundred dollars to have a technician replace it, or if you're handy, you can buy a used part and replace it yourself for about half that amount:

  • Mac Pro power off suddenly when remove power cord

hi, i've just got my new apple mac pro from the store fresh for 2 months, and my battery cycles have been only 13.
just now when i accidently uplug my powercord, it shut downs instantly, i'm so worried about this, i'm having a final exam in 2 weeks, and if it keeps happened like this i'm gonna be so unhappy.
is this a serious problem, anyone getting this ?
can i change it to new one at the store ?
    I'm in Melbourne, Australia

That certainly isn't what should happen — the machine should instantaneously and seamlessly switch over to battery power when the MagSafe plug is disconnected, unless the battery is drained or dead. What was the state of your battery when this happened?
Please test again, with your battery fully or partially charged, the machine running, and no documents open. Disconnect the MagSafe connector properly by holding the plug and tipping it downward until the electrical contact is broken. Does the machine shut down or keep running? Post back with results.

  • When i plug in my iphone to my computer, itunes doesn't recognize it, but iphoto does.

When i plug my iphone into my computer, it doesn't pop up in the devices column in itunes, but iphoto opens automatically asking me to import... I want to get my music off my computer, but this is problematic with itunes not recognizing my device!

Sounds like you need to authorize your computer. Open iTunes < Store on the menu bar < Authorize this computer.

  • Itunes doesn't recognize ipod, but desktop does

When I plug my 5th generation iPod into my MacBook, the desktop recognizes it, but iTunes doesn't and then iTunes freezes and I have to force-quit it. What is wrong?

You cannot sync music from an iPhone to a computer. It does not support disk mode, as other iPods do. If the music is purchased you can connect the iPhone to iTunes and choose "Transfer Purchases" from the File menu.

  • Forum search doesn't find message but Google does

The forum-search query "icc profiles ilford paper", with the forum "Photoshop Elements" selected, does not find the following message:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/1520276#1520276
    Re: ICC Profiles
I just purchased some ILFORD paper and I downloaded and installed the ICC profile into Windows Vista without any problems. My question is when I open my printer properties and select a paper profile my ILFORD ICC profile is not showing. I have a Canon Pro9000 printer.
    However, this Google query does:
icc profiles ilford paper photoshop elements site:forums.adobe.com
Sigh, in general I'm finding it faster and more reliable to use Google to search not only Adobe forums, but the knowledge base and the rest of the Adobe site as well.
Also, the message above is definitely indexed by the forum search engine, since you can retrieve it using the following query:
    subject:"icc profiles" ilford paper
Of course, at the time I was searching, I didn't know which keywords were in the subject and which were in the body.

And this suprises who?  Never had much luck with the Adobe search, either in old or new forum.

  • Odd problem using mini display cord and power cord at the same time

When i connect my mbp to a monitor/tv while running on ac the macbook freezes totally. As soon as i plug in the power cord while running an external monitor the cpu usage goes crazy. Kernal task reporting 100.1 % cpu usage and also high cpu usage (powered, syslogd and configd). The only way to unfreeze the macbook is to unplug the power cord. When i do this the laptop runs perfectly fine again while connected to my monitor.
The odd thing is that it was running totally fine a few hours ago. but after waking up my mac its showing this issue.
    Would love to get feedback.
    Thanks

I use a KVM switch with a Dell monitor that has DVI and VGA inputs. I only route the K an M portions (keyboard and mouse) through the switch. The computers connect directly via VGA and DVI to the Monitor, and then I use the monitor's switch to make the video switch. Works fine. Don't worry about taxing the monitor.
I'd suggest buying the KVM switch from a vendor with easy return policies, since it can take a few tries to find a model you like.

  • Batterie/power cord question

I got the new MacBook Pro 17" and got a question about batterie/power cord use.
I always use mine at home and almost never bring it anywhere. So is it best to
keep the power cord in all the time? Or take it out when its fully charge then run
on batteries plug it in again when the batteries almost dead and so on?
    Thanks

It would be better to leave the cord in, but only run down the battery all the way about once a month or so. It would be worse to run the battery down multiple times a week.
Try to keep the machine cool, since heat can really kill a battery.
A good essay on keeping battery life long is here.

  • G4 ibook won't turn on the power cord stays orange and won't charge the bat

I plugged my g4 ibook in and it turned the computer
off, I am in Ghana and used a surge protector but

resetting the PMU and the orange indicator light on
the power cord blinks green when I do this but then
nothing happens. The battery on the bottom only one
light lights up when pushing the battery button. Has

In addition I removed the battery and the power indicator light went to green without the battery in and the power in it, but absolutely nothing. Replaced the battery and nothing. Please help I am in Ghana, and have no way to get help!!!

    Hey Ryan,
Can you hear drumming [I studied with a Ghanian master from the Univ. there for 5 years and have a few hand carved djembes which are awesome].
I'm hoping that will divert you because you're not likely to find a new adapter there but that's undoubtedly the problem. I bent the prong on one slightly and it did the same thing, it's possible yours is like that. If you don't have any knowledge of it being bent it probably happened inadvertently, so you might try letting it sit out in the hot African sun until the gold is very malable then just run your fingers round the prong very lightly try to align it. I tried all night and this didn't work but it did get the thing closer so it might work for you.
Here's a link to a very good price where I got my replacement and it's good $38: http://store.shentech.com/ap24v145wsqs.html

  • Macbook shuts off instantly when I unplug power cord.

    Hello everybody.
This afternoon while I was watching a movie on my macbook, (it was on battery power, about 3/4 full) it just shut off. I could not turn it back on, so i plugged the power cord back in, it turned on fine, but whenever I unplug it it shuts down, even though it recognises the battery and charge level and all.
The thing is, when it shuts down it's not like if there was no battery, the screen dims, the battery icon changes to the one it has when its on battery power, and about 1-2 seconds later everything just shuts down. I'm just out of warranty (about 2 weeks ago). Do you guys think this is a hardware issue? I've gone through all the updates i have found on batteries and even reset the power management thing (where you turn the computer off with no battery and hold the power button).
    Thanks for any help

  • Dev4- Power Cord bad

I have a dv4-2045dx with a defective power cord. Blue indicator on brick lights but no power to PC.
Used universal test adapter kit to prove.
It still has 2 months left on the original (new) warranty.
Can the owner get a new power cord unit or is this excluded from the 1 Year warranty?

Generally the AC adapter is covered by the warranty for the same time as the main unit and will be replaced by HP if defective. Call the warranty toll-free number or 1-800-HP-INVENT.

  • Tracking Power Cord Usage

    Hello,
We are using iPads as a slideshow display in the lobby of our business. Very frequently I find the iPads unplugged and out of charge, which obviously renders the iPads useless until they are plugged in again. I have a feel our receptionists are unplugging them to charge there iPhones. I have secured the power cords to the iPad security locking harnesses, but they still find a reason to unplug them.
Is there a way to track exactly when the iPads are unplugged? We have cameras facing the iPads, but that's a hefty task to scan the video data manually. If I had an exact time, this would be easy.
    Any ideas? Thank you!!

Thinking more about this, it's probably visitors needing to recharge there phones.  Provide power strip.  Put receptionist in charge of problem.  Proclaim yourself as visitor friendly by providing power strip.  Could get furniture with power outlet.
I think for some reason they are called wet furniture.
