Removing printers in Classic environment

Hi,
One of the app's that our school uses still runs under Classic.
I know how to set up printers for them (using Chooser - LaserWriter 8) but how do I delete printers? A couple of our printers have been moved and are no longer available for the Mac clients to print to.
Thanks,
Jonathan

I have been able to delete them with the desktop printer utility. It should be in the OS 9 system folder>utilities
When it opens cancel the new printer it is trying to set up and go up to file delete to get rid of a printer.

  • How do you remove printers in Classic environment on Tiger?

I am working in an office that runs OS 10.4 Tiger, mainly on Mac Minis, with OS 9 running as Classic (non-bootable) environment.
In the OS 9 Chooser, there are a BUNCH of printers that aren't on the network any more, plus several versions of the printer drivers for those that are here. Wer'e getting a new, hot-cha networked printer, and the vendor insists the excess drivers have to go for everything to work -- but that he can't take them off.
I've removed excess printers from the OS X side with the utility, but they still show up in OS 9. And I can't find a window, dialog box or control panel in the OS 9 environment that will allow me to remove them from the Chooser.
Any help out there? Be kind, it's my first forum question ever.

    Welcome to the Apple forums!
The items that appear in the Left side of the Chooser window are Chooser Extensions. They are stored in the Extensions Folder, inside the "System Folder" but are best managed with the OS 9 Control Panel "Extensions Manager". When an item is unchecked in Extensions Manager, it will be moved into the Extensions (Disabled) folder when the window is closed. You will be asked to resolve any duplicates manually. Chooser Extensions do not require a restart to be de-activated.
You may also have some Desktop Printer Icons, typically on the desktop. You can sometimes throw these away, but they may be "Busy" until after their printer extension is removed and Classic is restarted.

  • Printing from OSX in Classic Environment 9.1 software on OSX based printers

Is it possible to load OSX on my Powerbook G3 and print OS 9.1 based applications with a printer designed to run only on OSX? I want to keep my OS 9 applications, run in the classic environment, but is this worth the possible troubles? New printers are only compatible with OSX!

Is it possible to load OSX on my Powerbook G3 and
    print OS 9.1
I'd use 9.2.2 if I were you. 9.22 works better in Classic. Which PowerBook G3 do you have? Early ones can't run OS X beyond 10.2.8 without 3rd-party hacks, such as XPostFacto. Some not-so-early ones can't go beyond 10.3.9 without 3rd-party hacks, such as XPostFacto. Later models can run Tiger.
    based applications with a printer
designed to run only on OSX?
I've never tried, but... in Tiger it might be possible because Apple changed the way Classic prints. In Tiger, Classic prints as if the printer was a laser printer using LaserWriter 8. The LW8 driver hands off the print job to the OS X printer, which then prints normally. (Yes, even color inkjets.) I suppose that this should work even if there is no OS 9 printer installed... but I haven't tried it. If it doesn't work, well, there's not much that will be done about it at this late date.
OS X before Tiger pretty much will require that Classic have working drivers. I had mixed experience getting printers to work in Classic before Tiger. In Tiger it's very simple.

    this worth the possible troubles?
This depends on how much printing you do from OS 9/Classic.
    New printers are
    only compatible with OSX!
Some new printers are OS X-only. Many still ship with OS 9 drivers. How much longer this will be true is not known, but is not likely to be long. If I had to print using OS 9, I would buy a printer I know works with OS 9 and is likely to last a while. Hint: this is unlikely to be a cheap printer. Second hint: I would do this quickly. Third hint: I'd think very, very, VERY hard about replacing as many OS 9 apps with OS X apps as I could. The end of OS 9/Classic, as an officially supported Apple technology, is in sight. OS 9 has not been able to run from new Macs for years now, and if Apple keeps its promise to move its entire line to Intel by the end of the year, then soon there will no longer be new Macs which can run Classic, either. There may/may not be a 3rd-party solution which allows OS 9 or something resembling Classic to run on Intel, but I'm not holding my breath. Furthermore, I suspect that OS X 10.5 will be the last OS X version to support Classic, even on PPC.

  • How do you empty the trash in the Classic Environment?

There was a large file on my desktop, called ".tif" (no filename, just ".tif" and nothing else). It was apparently created by the VueScan scanning software. It was not an image I asked it to scan, it's just some sort of test image. It only appears to applications running in Classic. It does not appear to OSX applications, and the Find command in the OSX Finder can't find it.
Using Sherlock 2, running under Classic, I was able to find this file, but the only thing I could do with it in Sherlock 2 was move it to the Trash. So now, it's sitting in the Trash of the Classic environment, but OSX doesn't see it, the Trash in OSX is empty.
There is no "Empty Trash" command in Sherlock 2, or any other Classic program that I have. All of the third-party utility programs that I have for OS 9, such as Norton Utilities, DiskWarrior, etc., won't run under Classic. When I try to run them, I simply get a message, "That application is not supported by Classic."
So, how can I get rid of this file? It is only visible to the Classic environment. Are there any utility programs that run under Classic that can cause the Classic environment Trash to be emptied?
    Thank you

Hi, Bob. I have no way to replicate your problem and test this suggestion on my Mac, but I'm confident that it will work. Download File Buddy 8 and use its Find command to search for a file whose name is .tif, including both visible and invisible files in the search. (The "." at the start of the file's name makes it invisible in OS X). Once you find it, select it in File Buddy's hit list — make very sure you're selecting the right file and only that file — and use the Delete command in FB's File menu — not the Trash button in FB's toolbar. "Delete" will remove the file instantly and irrevocably, no matter where it resides, ignoring the usual rigmarole associated with the Trash.
File Buddy is to the Finder what Photoshop is to QuickTime PictureViewer, or Word is to SimpleText. Anything FB can't do to or with your files (and much of what it can), you should be scared of doing. But when you need it, there's no substitute.

  • How to remove vestiges of Classic ?

I recently installed Leopard on an iMac G5 which came to me with Panther re-installed by the previous owner. I am trying to install an Epson printer (Epson Stylus Photo R200) but it will not open "because the classic environment is no longer supported". I have searched without avail for "classic" and OS 9. I find that the disc is partitioned (with nothing on the second half). Any suggestions gratefully received.

If anything to do with OS 9 is still on the drive, remove these items:
Applications (OS 9). NOT the folder Applications. That one belongs to OS X.
System Folder. NOT the folder System. That one belongs to OS X.
OS X may not let you delete the System Folder after placing it in the trash, saying "Items are in use". If it does, restart and you'll be able to delete it. If you like, you can save any fonts from OS 9 to use in OS X before removing them. They're in /System Folder/Fonts/.

  • No classic environment

I am hoping to use my "old" scanner connected to my home G4 running OS 10.4.3 (no driver support past 10.3.x) so that leaves me using it's old driver and taking advantage of the Classic Environment because the driver only works with OS 9. There is no Classic on the Tiger install, and the OS 9 disk won't let me install another system folder because it sees the OS 10 system folder, it wants to "replace" that folder in order to install. Any suggestions, (beside getting a new scanner, thanks)
    Thanks.

    Hi, vanhorn.
re: Scanner. I concur with the advice to consider VueScan for your scanner. I use VueScan with my UMAX Astra 6450 FireWire scanner under Mac OS X with excellent results.
The VueScan Web site lists supported and unsupported scanners. If your scanner is supported, download it and try it for free with your scanner. If it works, buying a registration removes the watermark and quality degradation on test scans.
If VueScan doesn't support your scanner, another option is to look at SilverFast.
Re: Classic. See "Install Mac OS 9 to use Classic applications." This article applies to Macs manufactured after June 2004, including G5 iMac and Power Mac computers.
PowerPC-based Macs no longer ship from the factory with Mac OS 9 installed for Classic. The cited KB article provides instructions for installing it from one of the discs that came with your computer.

  • Iphoto; Classic environment no longer supported

"You can't open the application iPhoto because the classic environment is no longer supported."
Posting this for a pal whose new iMac (Nov 2008) gives her this msg when she tries to access her photos in iPhoto. She is no longer able to open the program from her dock, nor from her Applications folder. Does she have to re-install the software to access iPhoto from now on? If so, how does one re-install. She has not backed up anything since becoming a new Mac customer.
    Thanks for the assist.

    Try re-install:
    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applcations Folder to the trash)
    2. Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only...’

  • Powermac G5 hangs when entering classic environment

I think I once saw a solution to this problem about a year ago on the baords, but it seems to have been deleted. When I try to run a Classic-only app, the "classic boot-up" screen appears, then hangs within a second or two. As my sig notes, I'm running a Dual 2.3 GHz G5.
My vague recollection of the solution to this problem was that some file had to be moved around or a sys pref changed. The thread was called "Getting Classic up to snuff" and I had a link to it, but it doesn't work any more.
Anyone know what I'm talking about? Or any other solution to get Classic working on my Powermac?

    Dear Steve,
Do you mean "PrefRestoreInit" which is under
HDD > System Folder > Extension folder > PrefRestoreInit
Looking at the issue with a lager perspective I am suggesting you to go for following actions.
    1. Open System Preferences, and choose View > Classic. 2. Click the Start/Stop tab, and look for bold text that says Classic is "running" or "not running."
    3. You want to be sure Classic is not running. If it is running, click the Stop button.
    4. Click your desktop.
    5. Choose File > New Folder.
    6. Give the new folder a name such as "Previous Mac OS 9 Items".
    7. Choose Go > Home.
    8. Open your Library folder, then open the Classic folder that is inside it. (Your current path is: ~/Library/Classic/).
    9. Move all the contents of this Classic folder into the folder you named in Step 6.
    10. Go back to System Preferences and click the Start button to start Classic. A dialog asks if you want to populate the folder you just emptied with files from the Mac OS 9 System Folder.
    11. Click OK. Items are copied from the cleanly installed System Folder, and folders reappear at ~/Library/Classic/.
    12. Once Classic starts, check to see whether the issue persists. If it does, you may have an application-specific issue, and you need to reinstall the application.
Also you can disable extensions while starting the classic environment.step :
    1. As Classic or Mac OS 9 starts up, press and hold the Shift key to disable extensions.
    2. Locate the FileSharingLib extension. If it is not in the "Extensions (Disabled)" folder of the System Folder, then try locating it with the Mac OS X version of Sherlock (if applicable).
Alternative solution: If you cannot locate this extension, an alternative solution is to find the file "PrefRestoreInit", which should be in the Extensions folder inside the System Folder.
    3. Drag FileSharingLib into the Extensions folder, which is in the Mac OS 9 System Folder.
Alternative solution: If you could not find FileSharingLib in the last step, then remove PrefRestoreInit from the Extensions folder.
    4. Restart the computer or Classic, allowing extensions to load normally.
If this does not help then follow the article to rebless the system folder

There is one specific file for classic in the core folder did you mean that file ?

  • Is it possible to run the Classic Environment INSIDE Rosetta on a MacBook Pro (Early 2008) with Leopard?

    Hi there,
Rosetta works up until Snow Leopard. The Classic Environment works up until a late version of Tiger. Rosetta makes apps. built for PowerPC Macs work. The Classic Environment make apps. for Mac OS 9 work on Mac OS X for PowerPC Macs.
Would it consequently be possible to run the Classic Environment INSIDE Rosetta?
I have read https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2292, but I am still unconvinced unless there is a flaw to my logic. At any rate, I subscribe to the Churchillian adage of never giving in unless the forces of common sense and doctrine dictate otherwise.
If it won't work, then why?

Hi there, Klaus1, BDAqua and a brody,
Thank you ever so much for your kind replies! (I tried giving you the 10 pts. of 'Correct Answers' to each of you, but unfortunately it was only possible for Klaus1, so the points were distributed between him and BDAqua even though you were all helpful!)
My next question will naturally be: Is SheepShaver legal? My Google search didn't yield any conslusive proof that it was, nor any that it wasn't, but as the E-Maculation web page seemed quite official and above board I would assume that it is.
The next logical step would be to ask whether it's safe for both HW and SW to run SheepShaver. HW, it appears, is very rarely, if ever, affected by SW settings, so I would assume that hardwarewise, I'm good to go. Could it ruin the kernel of Mac OS X's Unix-based operating system?
    Kind Regards,

  • Classic environment is no longer supported.

I am a pc user switching...
I have some old DVDs, vol 1 an vol II. Vol II is the newest, and have the "built for OS X" logo on it, but both are old. They install fine under windows XP.
The MAC installation is to drap a folder, open the folder, and start the program (no installer dmg like I have seen elsewhere). However, you then get the error message:
you can't open the application "Hemera Photo-Objects" because the Classic environment is no longer supported.
I have boot camp/parrallels, so I realize I could access them that way, but they work so poorly it would be a pain.
I have no idea what the error message means, is there a way around it? The mfg no longer support mac that I can see.
    Bob

As Baltwo already mentioned, Classic is the name for Mac OS 9 running under Mac OS X in emulation. Apps for Mac OS 9 are different than Mac OS X apps. In the early days of Mac OS X, most people still used a lot of Mac OS 9 apps, so there was an emulator built-in (called, you guessed it, "Classic").
As Mac hardware has moved to the Intel chips (Mac OS 9 ran on PowerPC chips), it has become more and more difficult to support Classic, and less and less useful, since most people don't use Mac OS 9 apps anymore. So, recent hardware doesn't support Classic, and Leopard dropped all support for Classic.
There are third-party solutions, though they're not going to be easy to use, primarily due to the need to find an old Mac ROM image. I have been unsuccessful at finding one to download... old links are gone now. If this software is something you really need, it might be easier to visit eBay and buy a cheap older Mac.

  • How do I install 9.1 for Classic Environment?

Hi, this question might sound dumb because I'm not familiar with OS X.
I have a 800 Mhz G4 Quicksilver running 10.1.3. What I want to do is install 9.1 onto the Mac so I can have the whole classic environment shebang.
I was told that you can partition the hard drive, but The Disk Utility says it can't partition a disk with the running system on it. <---my hard drive. I've tried holding down c at startup, that doesn't work, I selected the 9.1 disk as the start up disk, that resulted in the beloved blinking question mark over the system folder on startup. I have a good feeling it's a pretty simple process, I just have no idea how to go about it.
Peace and Love and Happy New Year,

    Quicksilver G4   Mac OS X (10.1.x)

If you partition the hard drive you are then reformating it and will have to re-install OSX and all your files. Just insert a retail version of 9.1 and install from there. You can then update incrementally to 9.2.2.

  • How do I install the classic environment?

I have an iMac slot loader that I got for my daughter. I have a retail version of OSX 10.2 installed on it and working fine.
I also have alot of games but they require the Classic Environment.
I have forgotten how to install the Classic environment! I think at one time, I had osX on there and Classic but I don't remember exactly how I got it on there if that was the case.
I have a retail OS 9.?.? but I don't think that is the answer. I am afraid if I boot to that disc and try to install, it will over write my OSX instalation with OS 9. That would prevent her from using the OSX games that I have for her.
I don't mind doing a complete new installation if need be because I have not started installing the games just yet.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Hey Glen,
I set these iMacs up all the time. I use a retail 10.3.2 or 10.4.3 installer and a 9.2.2 image or a 9.2.1 iMac dedicated installer to set them up. Archive and install will work for either just make sure to install OS 9 drivers if you format your drive in X extended (journaled).
I do the minimum install in X no language and no printer drivers.
The installer in 9.2.1 is white with a large orange 9 on it.
I have a ton of software for OS 9; Living Books, Kid Pix and Zoombinis being amoung the most popular.
I've made images of the CDs ( actually SMIs ) so the kids don't need the CDs to run the apps. These often get totally messed up.
Actually I have cloners of all these setups on various setups on my MDD G4 and use CCC to clone them onto the target drives. Often I'll have to use an install CD to get it to work anyway. Some of the more stubborn will require an in situ install with the CD.

  • How to force Tiger to print doc within Classic environment, not with OSX?

I want to print certain documents using OS9's printing utility within the Classic environment, and NOT using Tiger's standard OSX printing method. How?
I know it is possible because I have two Macs connected to the same printer, and it works on one and not the other. I can't figure out why.
    Here are the specifics:
I have a printer, the Ricoh Laser AP2600. Connected to it are two computers:
    a PowerBook G4 running 10.4.7, and
    an iMac running 10.3.9.
When I print documents from OSX applications, the two computers take the exact same time to print. HOWEVER, when I print from Classic applications, the iMac running 10.3.9 prints very quickly, but the PB running 10.4.7 takes two to three times as long. That's because the iMac prints the document using the old OS9 "Print Monitor" printing utility, and never passes the printing back to Tiger. Whenever I try to print a document from a Classic application on the PB, however, it passes the printing to the standard OSX printing method, which (for some reason) is much slower.
(Sorry if I'm not using the right terminology.)
I checked and double-checked, and as far as I can tell, all the "printer descriptions" and "drivers" and everything else is absolutely identical in both System 9 "Extension" folders on both computers. I installed the exact same Ricoh print-driver packages for OSX and Classic on both machines identically. So -- why does one print quickly within Classic, and the other pass the printing job back to slow OSX?
The specific application that causes this discrepancy is MSWord 5.1a, a very old version that only works under Classic. (I use it a lot because I prefer it to more recent versions of MSWord.)
A secondary, but related, question: Why does printing documents from within the Classic environment go so much more quickly than in OSX? It seems to be one of the few aspects of OSX that's worse than OS9.
So -- how can I make my PB behave like my iMac? Is there some difference between 10.3.9 and 10.4.7 that causes this different behavior? Any hints or suggestions would be most appreciated.
    Thanks.

OK, I have finally solved the problem -- mostly.
The trick was to click on the Chooser option called "PSPrinter" -- not LaserWriter 8 or any of the others. I took a chance on that since I knew that the Ricoh 2600 was a PostScript printer. When I clicked on it, and chose "Set up printer," I was able to set up the Ricoh driver. Then, when I tried printing, it worked -- it printed within the Classic environment, not in Tiger. And what a difference!! Under Tiger, a simple page of text takes 45 seconds to process and print. Under Classic, the exact same page processes and prints in 8 seconds! A huge difference. So, I finally got it to work.
The downside is that I can't get it to "stick." If I restart Classic (or the entire computer), the next time I go back to print in MSWord 5.1a (my Classic application), it will have reverted back to the Tiger method of printing. So, the first time I print a page in 5.1a during any session, I have to go to Chooser and select PSPrinter. This adds 15 seconds or so to the process, so printing a single page overall isn't any faster, if you add up all the steps. Subsequent prints all are done quickly in Classic automatically, as long as Classic hasn't restarted. (I can even quit the application and restart it without a problem -- only an OS restart causes it to revert back to Tiger printing.)
So, my basic problem is solved, and I'm fairly satisfied. But I still have two nagging issues that I wouldn't mind answered if anybody knows the answers:
How can I make my Chooser printer selection in Classic "stick" permanently from one restart to the next? Why does it revert to Tiger printing after a restart?
And the fundamental question: why is Classic printing so much faster than Tiger printing? I thought Tiger was supposed to be a "digital hub" that made communicating with peripherals so easy? In most ways it is, but why is printing the one way in which OSX is WORSE than OS9, at least in regards to speed?
