Removing programs and etc

I'm just wonder if there is something on my iMac that is kind of like windows add/remove programs tool, or is it just, drag the folder from your macintosh HD into the trash and that's it? it doesn't leave random files behind like it did on windows?
Also, exploring the web, i noticed, well wait you know what, i just figured it out just now lol.... i was about to ask about the history and i looked up and it's right there on the top! i keep forgeting everything for every program is at the top, not on the program! lol bbblllahhhhh, i gotta get use to this! lol
anyway first question please.. thanks

One of the easiest ways to remove things that you have installed is to write the name of the program in the search box in the upper right corner of a Finder window. What will appear in the window is a list of applications, files, docs, etc with that name. If you highlight an item in the list, by clicking on it once, at the bottom of the window you will see the filepath of where it is located. Use this filepath to determine if it is associated with the Application you want to remove or just an occurrence of the name in a doc or pdf, etc associated with another application. If you determine it is associated with the App you want to remove press Command + Delete and it will be moved to the trash.
Based on what type of app you are trying to remove there can be assorted files associated with the App. These are usually in the main OS Library or your User Library and are usually located in folders called Application Support, Internet Plugins, Preferences or even a folder with the name of the App. If the App is controlled from System Preferences it may have a file in a folder called PreferencePanes. Sometimes all the associated files do not use the name of the App, but use the Brand Name of the manufacturer, for example Microsoft, Apple, or Adobe. Just to be sure I locate all of the associated files I always run both the name of the App and the Brand Name.
Occasionally, associated files cannot be deleted by emptying the trash until you Log Out of your User Account and then Log In. Rarely, you may need to Restart to delete the item by emptying the Trash.
This is the method that I use to remove troublesome or unwanted software. I also retain install logs if an installer program creates one while installing an App. This usually contains a complete list of all the files installed and may even include the filepath. I also hang on to any uninstallers that occasionally come with an App. I keep these logs and uninstallers at least until I have determined whether I intend to keep the App.

  • Remove programs and missing disk space

I'm just switched to Mac a few weeks ago and I got problem when I remove program in my MacBook.
Is that ok when I just sent my program to trash and that's all for removing a program? I saw that's some program such as "Adobe Reader" it has a uninstall dmg file but another do not.
After I remove program, my disk's space still doesn't change so did I remove it? My disk's space's 120Gb but I just have 60Gb left now even I did not add a lot of program, so why's it disappear?

Dragging a file to the Trash does not delete it from the drive until you empty the Trash.
    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash. Most applications create preference files which are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder. Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space. If you want you can located them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application. In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder. You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder. You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder. Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item. Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder. Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences. Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab. Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.
There are also several shareware utilities that can uninstall applications:

    CleanApp
    Yank

  • How can I uninstall Firefox 8 if Remove Programs and the uninstall helper.exe don't work?

I need to uninstall Firefox, but when I click "Remove" in Add/Remove Programs, nothing happens. I tried it several times. Add/Remove Programs shows Mozilla Firefox 3.0.6, which is strange since I have 8. I also tried running the helper.exe file in the uninstall folder, and nothing happened. I tried doing all of this after a few reboots as well as in Safe Mode, and had the same result. I searched the online forums, but I did not find anyone with exactly this same problem. I made sure Firefox was not running when I tried to uninstall it (double-checking the processes in Task Manager). I just ran Windows Update and everything else is working fine. I have no Antivirus software running. I closed all programs (down to essential Windows processes) before attempting the steps above. This is the first time I have ever attempted to uninstall Firefox.
    Thanks!

You may only see leftover entries in Add and Remove programs, but the listed programs may have been replaced by the updated version. This can happen if the updater didn't remove those old entries.

  • Removing Programs and eSellerate Question

I'm currently in the process of moving from a PC running Windows to a Mac. What is the best way to completely remove a program and all of its associated files? It seems that if I move the main App folder to the Trash there are still lingering associated files buried in other parts of the computer.
This leads me to my second question. When hunting for these other folders I came across something called eSellerate in my Library > Application Support Folder. What is this? It doesn't sound like something that should be there.
    Thanks.

To remove a program, run its uninstaller if it had an installer to begin with. Alternatively, many Mac apps are just dropped into the /Applications folder and are folders disguised as packages. Just delete them. As for the eSellerate thing, do a google search for it. AFAIK, you had to install something to get it. It isn't part of OS X.

  • Properly removing programs and other files

I recently tried to install World of Warcraft on my macbook. After I realized that my computer was just a little too slow to run it properly I tried to erase it. Now my macbook is telling me that my hard drive is almost full and I'm convinced that I didn't remove World of Warcraft properly. How do I check if I removed it or not and if I didn't how do I properly remove it and other files for future reference?

Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS. Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term. Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default. You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, Easy Find, instead. Download Easy Find at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder. Usually with the same name as the program or the developer. The item generally has a ".pkg" extension. Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.

  • How to remove Java Applications from "Add and Remove Programs" list?

I have deployed my Java applications (both JWS and Applet) via JNLP with allow-offline option enabled and without installer-desc option specified.
    My questions are:
    1. An entry is added to the Add and Remove Programs list after launching the application via JNLP. Is it due to the specification of JNLP or JWS? Is there anyway to prevent this behavior?
    2. I removed my application by clearing the cache via Java Control Panel but the entry for the application is still listed in Add and Remove Programs. How can I remove the entry in the Add and Remove Programs?
I have tried following methods but neither works:
1.Go to Add and Remove Programs, and click [remove] button to the right of my application.
*Warning message like 'Application cannot be uninstalled completely' is thrown.
2.Follow instructions listed @ [Microsoft Online Support site|http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314481/en-us] to remove my application manually via Windows registry.

  • Want to delete then reload firefox, but in add/remove programs, i click remove and nothing happens.

Firefox will not work. I want to delete it, then reload it anew. But when I got to add/remove programs and click remove, nothing happens.

I would recommend to download the driver appropriate for your system from the Canon webiste or, after installing it, to run software update and it will detect it for you.
If you have the last driver appropriate for your system, you may wish to reset the printing system. To do this, go to Sys prefs/print and fax and, upon clicking minus button, also press Option/alt key. You will be asked to confirm, do it. Then, add the printer by pressing plus button, it should work now.
But, before doing this, download the last good driver, CDs usually contain outdated drivers.

  • Equivalent to "Add/Remove Programs" aka "Programs and Features" Controls???

WHEN will Apple finally get around to adding an equivalent thing to Windows' "Add/Remove Programs" (XP) aka "Programs and Features" (Vista) Control Panel???
I am looking to uninstall some software from my computer. But only God knows where the installer has stashed files all over my drive! I don't want to leave behind a single preferences file or extension.
Is there some easy way in Mac to do this? In Windows you just go to "Add/Remove Program" and you can uninstall every last shred or trace of that software. But in the Mac... there's about four or five major places to look, but how can you know if it installed something in a hidden directory in the Unix directories somewhere??

drdocument, I respectfully, completely disagree with you.
The average Mac user has no clue as to what the Library folder is for. Nor would they be able to sort through it all to find the five locations where the tons of crap might be stored.
Lets take several examples. Here's some programs that I have installed that are quite typical of Mac users:
    Garage Band
    iTunes
    Adobe CS3
    Microsoft Office
NONE of these programs can be deleted easily. Garbage Band stores its garbage in numerous unintuitive places:
    /Users/me/Music/Garageband
    /Library/Audio/Plug-ins
    /Library/Application Support/Garage Band/
    /Users/me/Library/Preferences/
Further, it's not always clear whether the files you are deleting are used by just one application, or multiple applications from that same company (or even other companies). I often feel unsure if I'm deleting something from /Library/Audio/Plug-ins or /Library/Application Support/Adobe because... is it used only by Photoshop? What if I just wanted to uninstall InDesign and I no longer have the original install disk because, lets say, I sold it?
It should not fall upon the user to play sleuth and hunt down the myriad places that these apps store things on the drive!!!
There should be an EASY Control Panel in System Preferences that lets you uninstall any program off your drive. I seriously don't think that this would hamper application development or make the system run slower or be kludgy. Besides, when has Apple ever taken the path of making things harder on users because they were afraid by making it easier, it would slow down the computer???
If anything the opposite has always been true.
Even a shareware app that just has one application file and no other files on the drive should be able to be uninstalled with confidence by a control panel. Since, how do you KNOW it didn't put another file somewhere, even a preferences file? God only knows how many preferences files are on my drive that I don't need because they never got erased when I uninstalled the app. It would take me days to comb through that mess, especially since the arcane and unintuitive preference file naming scheme used by OS X does not use plain english but rather uses ridiculous un-Mac-like names like "com.unsanity.hoseyoursystem.preference"... whatever happened to "Microsoft Word Preferences" and "Adobe Photoshop Preferences" -- nice Mac-like filenames?!?!??!
I'm tired of the PC-ization of the Mac, the further and further making it more complicated, having apps store more crap in more different places. Having multiple Library folders is just a nightmare from an ease-of-use standpoint, though I know it's necessary for a multi-user OS. But there ought to be a way to have a "single-user" mode that would eliminate the Users directory all together and just store everything at the root level of the HD, rather than having all my documents buried 10 levels deep into the drive.
Anyway the point is you are wrong. The way it is set up makes it harder on users -- even seasoned users like me -- when we want to cleanly uninstall an application with confidence. It means tons of extra time sifting through the labrynthine unix crap. I hate it! Where has "user friendly" gone??
Besides I would never trust a third-party shareware program to uninstall things. How would i know that it knew what to do? Plus it adds extra expense to the OS, for a feature that has been standard on Windows for what seems like 10 years!
When will we finally get this feature? 2020?

  • Partial installs - how to remove them and start afresh

    Hi,
I'm in the middle of installing BOXI 31 on a 32 bit unix machine, distro Red Hat Ent 5.0.
How do you uninstall the partially deployed BO install. Is there a script that removes what was installed. Or is it simply a case of Add/Remove Programs and then physically removing the files copied top the directories.
I'm keen not to lock up any of the ports from previous installs thereby affecting the workings of the correctly installed version.
Here's the error in more detail below.
Thanks for taking the time to read this post.
I've managed to partially install the software but got an error midway through of
    [error] Errcode 1: cp -r /home/o2mars/perl/* /home/o2mars//perl
[error] [PostInstallScripts::WaitForCMS] CMS is not started, giving up.
    ~
I presume this is due to my hosts file
    # Do not remove the following line, or various programs
    # that require network functionality will fail.
    127.0.0.1               localhost.localdomain localhost
    ::1             localhost6.localdomain6 localhost6
    192.168.0.162   oxygen

    Hi Caroline,
    cheers for the reply.
Impatient and went ahead and removed the the directories completely - bit rash but it worked OK.
On reinstall still managed to get that error but the progress of the install as a whole didn't fall over as it did previously on about 55% of Total Progress. This time it reached about 90% then came back with the message of
    BO installed with Errors etc.
I then ran the setupinit.sh, everything was OK then on login to CMC and InfoView.
I asked around the traps here (my colleagues would have loads more experience with Unix than I) and the said don't worry about it once the perl dir was there since it seemed to be copying to itself.
    [o2mars@oxygen ~]$ du -hs perl
    67M     perl
so not as big as you say.
It is a bit of a worry I suppose I would have preferred a clean install entirely.
So far only the Red Hat Ent 5.0 and BOXI 3.1 itself are the only programs loaded so it would have only been the partial installs that could have consumed those port resources (it happened on a previous install I did before Christmas)
    Thanks for your tips
    Cheers, Ed
