Removing system preferences in Network

I have configured a multitude of network settings in System Preferences. To keep things tidy I would like to remove some of them. How do I go about doing this?

By "network settings" do you mean locations?
If so, just choose "Edit Locations" from the Locations menu in the Network system prefs.
otherwise, choose "Network Port Configurations" from the "Show" menu and delete what you don't want.

  • System Preferences Problem - Network Pane Inaccesible.

I am having a problem with iTunes on an iMac G3SE running 10.4.11. One idea to deal with the problem involves checking the network settings/proxies, etc. Great... easy to get at... But that is not my *Real Problem*!
That is that I'm having difficulties getting into the Network Pane (and only THAT pane) of System Preferences. I open Sys Prefs... no problem. I open Network... no problem. Then, a second or so later a sheet descends saying "Your network settings have been changed by another application". I click "OK" The sheet ascends... and just as I am moving my mouse to the required button, down comes the sheet again. Click OK... ascends... descends... ... ... and so on. At that point it has also become impossible to close Sys Prefs... the sheet blocks me out from that level of the display, so I have to "Force Quit" Sys Prefs (which, luckily, works... I wouldn't want to have to keep hitting the power button to effect a restart!!).
Anyone ever had a problem like this... how do I resolve... I can't think of anything that's installed on the G3 that could be interfering with the settings... and why does the sheet keep descending, rather than going away completely when I acknowledge its presence by hitting "OK".
I've tried deleting the Sys Prefs plists, in case it is a preferences issue... but that doesn't explain the suggested existence of some program that I don't recognise as interfering with the network settings.

To stop the pop-up, Go to System Preferences: Security. Check the box next to "Require password to unlock each secure system preference." Then lock Security.

  • Ort Express- my network suddenly not showing up. System preferences, advanced/network shows network. Opened Airport Utility options grayed out except configure other but no luck. No set up assistant option to reenter.  Not sure where to go from here?.

    Airport Express.
My network suddenly not showing up.  Openend system preferences/Network & my network is there. When I open Airport Utility, most option are grayed out except "configure other" with no change.  Utility does not provide option for setup assistant where I could just start over.  So no wifi without network set up and can't use ethernet/router to troubleshoot.  I am stuck any assistance helpful.

So I went back to the PC after my original post, and somehow I was able to connect to the AirPort wireless network in the Windows Wireless Network List. Once I did this, it showed up in the AirPort Utility, and I was able to access the internet. I have no idea what fixed the problem, but maybe it was simply a matter of waiting a few minutes before connecting to the network?

I have a few icons in my system preferences that are no longer needed but I can't seem to delete them. Nothing is showing up in a Spotlight search but the icons are still there!! How do I get rid of them?

Have you checked in Preference Panes folders? There are at least two locations for these:

System Preferences belongs in the Applications folder.
Double click the hard drive icon. The Applications folder is right there. Drop the icon from the desktop into that folder. Then while that folder is still open, drag the System Preferences icon on to the left side of the dock, and drop it there.

  • System preferences on network not allowing changes

Hi, my network is running slow and so I went into sys pref to check it out and when i went into the network dialog box it says that a change has been made to my system by another application with an "ok" box. when i hit "ok" that box just keeps coming back. I was trying to run a diagnostic on my network preferences. I can force quit to get out but otherwise this happens on both my pc and my laptop here at home. Haven't checked it on wifi elsewhere.

This is happening to me too. Did you ever find a solution?

Sometimes just closing and reopening the Help window will clear up the problem. If it doesn't, log out or restart the computer and try again. Otherwise, you may need to delete the Help cache.

If that doesn't work, the problem may be caused by network conditions. It may go away by itself, though I can't say how long you should wait.
A persistent failure to load help data has been reported as an issue with satellite networks. Test on a different network, if possible. I've also seen at least one report that Photo Stream in iCloud can mysteriously interfere with Help. I'm not sure whether that's true, but try disabling Photo Stream, if applicable.

  • Network system preferences

After changing certain system preferences for Network, the control panel quits. I'm able to switch from wifi to ethernet in the main screen but, if I attempt to change something 'advanced' it can't handle it. Is it possible to reload system preferences? I am running OS 10.7.5 on a MBP 2.1 with 2 Gb of Ram.

    Hi drmoque!
I'm not familiar with Tiger, so I can't really help you with the differences in Network Preferences, but they are probably changes made between Panther 10.3.x and Tiger 10.4.x.
You wrote "Lastly he says he has no option to upgrade to 10.4 when checks for software updates."
That I can shed some light on.
Mac OS X Versions 10.1, 10.2, 10.3, and 10.4, are complete system upgrades that must be purchased.
The point upgrades, such as 10.1.x to 10.1.5 (Final) 10.2.x to 10.2.8 (Final), 10.3.x to 10.3.9 (Final), and 10.4.x to 10.4.8 (Pending), can be downloaded for free.
Tiger is available for purchase at The Apple Store (US).
A Full Retail Version of the Tiger Install DVD, can be purchased rather inexpensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, AppleRescue, etc.
Be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
Jaguar and Panther are only on CDs, not DVDs.

  • System Preference: Print & Fax missing

    Hello.
When I go to System Preferences > Internet & Network...
My Print & Fax icon is missing. I can't select and default my installed printers.
How do I retrieve this icon?
    Thanks

It's an easy fix. Just delete the preferences file and open System Preferences to create a new one:
    1. Quit System Preferences.
    2. Click the Finder icon in the Dock.
    3. Choose Go > Go To Folder.
    4. Type: ~/Library/Caches
    5. Click Go.
    6. Locate this file: "com.apple.preferencepanes.cache"
    7. Drag it to the Trash.
    8. Open System Preferences.

  • System Preferences crash in 10.4.7

Hello. I recently upgraded to OS X 10.4.7 and since then I have been unable to use System Preferences. I tried creating another user with admin permissions, but that did not resolve the problem. I can open the System Preferences program, but when I click on any settings it crashes. I have 36 Gig of free space left, so I don't think it's a memory issue. Also, I haven't installed any new software lately, and I didn't experience this problem until after I installed the upgrade to OS X. I've seen in other postings people referring to deleting certain preferences files, but I didn't try that because it didn't seem to help anyone. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know. Thanks.

Hi, marcelle33. Welcome to the Discussions.
    1. Try removing System Preferences preferences and caches:1. Quit System Preferences if it is open.
    2. Open your Home > Library > Caches folder, then trash the following two files therein:
    - com.apple.preferencepanes.cache
    - com.apple.preferencepanes.searchindexcache
    3. Trash the file
    com.apple.systempreferences.plist
in your Home > Library > Preferences folder.
    4. Trash the file
    com.apple.systempreferences.xxx.plist
in your Home > Library > Preferences > ByHost folder, where xxx is an alphanumeric string.
    5. Empty Trash.
    6. Launch System Preferences and see if the problem is resolved.2. If you have installed any third-party preference panes (usually found in Macintosh HD > Library > PreferencePanes folder), either:• Check for updates to either the preference panes or associated applications.
    • Remove the third-party preference panes and consider uninstalling the associated applications, if any.3. If the above does not sort out the issue, immediately after the problem occurs, check the ends of these Console logs for clues.
    Good luck!

How do I recover system preferences which I accidentally trashed from the dock

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Although you removed System Preferences from the Dock, you still have it, because it is stored in the Applications folder.
To get the System Preferences icon back in the Dock, open a Finder window and select Applications in the Finder sidebar. Then, look for the System Preferences icon, and if you find it, drag it to the Dock

  • What happened to my System Preferences?

    Hello
My husband somehow managed to remove System Preferences from the dock, and now I can't get it back! It doesn't show in finder or in Applications. I did see the Icon for it somewhere, but it was pixilated and clicking on it does nothing.
    Help!!

I have exactly the same problem with my iMac 24" and I believe it is heat related.  As long as the computer is cool the bluetooth works great.  When it heats up in the afternoon (my office gets up to 75-80 sometimes), it begins to cease functioning.  Putting the computer to sleep and allowing it to cool down solves the problem, until it heats up again.  Cooling the top with a fan will also help.  This is definately not related to software.

  • Strange "speech" icon in System Preferences

The "speech" icon in System Preferences looks like a white oversized box with a lightswitch in it. The word "speech" is cut off along the bottom of this box-like icon.
Any ideas as to what might have caused this, and if I can fix it? Thanks!

    Hi, JdotL.
    1. It sound like the Speech preference pane file has been assigned the icon for System Preferences. Does Speech preferences open if you click this?
    2. Try removing System Preferences preferences and caches:1. Quit System Preferences if it is open.
    2. Open your Home > Library > Caches folder, then trash the following two files therein:
    - com.apple.preferencepanes.cache
    - com.apple.preferencepanes.searchindexcache
    3. Trash the file
    com.apple.systempreferences.plist
in your Home > Library > Preferences folder.
    4. Trash the file
    com.apple.systempreferences.xxx.plist
in your Home > Library > Preferences > ByHost folder, where xxx is an alphanumeric string.
    5. Empty Trash.
    6. Launch System Preferences and see if the problem is resolved.3. As a general checkup, I suggest you run the procedure outlined in my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ. Perform the steps therein in the order specified.
    Good luck!
