Removing system startup items?

Hey, I've got an app called WLAN which provides drivers and a config utility for using unsupported wireless USB dongles. I've now moved, and I'm in a place where it's fine to use wired ethernet, and so I don't need to currently use the app, but it keeps opening at startup and I can't work out how to disable it. It isn't in the startup items section of accounts in system prefs, so I assume it's considered as a system app (it did install itself in utilities when the drivers were installing)... I know I can just use an uninstaller app to remove the program, but I will be moving between here and home where I'll need wireless access again, and it was such a pain to set up that I want to keep it on!
I'm running a G4 Mini 1.42 btw, obviously with no airport/bluetooth module.

Nah, tried the login items already...in library:startupitems I have Qmaster, retrorun (for backup) and a folder called RDUSB0064startup, which doesn't return any hits on google! :S Ill try deleting that and see what happens!

  • New user - Opening a file on first login, then removing from startup items

I'm trying to write a script to open a pdf welcoming a new user on an imaged mac. I've written the script "Welcome.app" below
    tell application "Preview"
    open "OS X Tiger:Users:Shared:Welcome.pdf"
    end tell
    do shell script "rm /Users/Shared/Welcome.app"
I'm having problems with permissions this way. I've tried changing the user and group but no luck so far.
It was suggested to me to try using "defaults write loginwindow etc" to
remove the Welcome.app from the startup items, but I'm not sure if this is possible from the terminal.
    Any suggestions?
Netrestore generic image   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Create a second copy of the loginwindow.plist file in the User Template's Preferences folder with the name loginwindow.original.plist, and use the following two commands after the tell block:
do shell script "mv ~/Library/Preferences/loginwindow.plist ~/.Trash/loginwindow.plist"
do shell script "mv ~/Library/Preferences/loginwindow.original.plist ~/Library/Preferences/loginwindow.plist"
The script will then disappear from the startup items, but will remain on the hard disk.

  • User has a "startup on login" pref that opens a file named "apple-scc-20111227-074257".  Can't find any reference to this....any idea on what this startup file does or if it can be safely removed as a login-startup item?  thanks.

Friend has a laptop running OSX 10.6.8, with latest software update 22Jun2012.  One of the User's items to startup on Login is a file titled "
    apple-scc-20111227-074257"
No idea what this does or where it is located.....any ideas on what it starts up and if it can be safely removed from startup items?  Thanks for any info.

If you mouse over the item in your Login Items you should see a tool tip indicating where it is.  Alternatively right (control) click on it and a contextual menu item, Reveal in Finder will be shown which you can select to open the folder containing the item.
By the way the 20111227 portion of that name looks like a date -- 12/27/2011.
I'm  sure you can delete it.  Nothing major is going to happen.  But you really should find out where it is.
If Reveal in Finder doesn't show anything it may be because the file is invisible (which might be considered somewhat suspicious).  In that case use the finder find command (command-f) and look for kind filename plus invisible.  Or just use Find any File to find it.

  • Applescript "deamon" on system startup or login item

    Hello:
I wrote an AppleScript script and saved it as an Applet that needs to run in the background whenever the system is up.
1/ I tried to set it as a startup item, so that it would start running as soon as the Mac is on -- however without success. I did not find out what the proper way is of doing this.
2/ Then I tried to set it as a login item for each user. This is not as good, but I thought it may an alternative, 'buying me some time' to figure out how to do it properly as a system startup item. Launching the app works fine, but the user cannot log off again, because the system cannot seem to quit the script. So I have to stop the process in Activity Monitor, obviously not a solution.
3/ Also, I would prefer the script to not show up in the Dock.
Any help is appreciated, especially on question #1.
    Thanks,
    HAL

    Hello twtwtw:
Thank you for your excellent advice and sorry for my ridiculous late reply.
Your first suggestion works smoothly, adding the "Application is agent" key to the Info.plist file via Xcode hides the app.
Also, I created the launchd launchagent plist file as you suggested and put it into /Library/LaunchAgents. The file name is irrelevant, I presume. The app itself is now in a subdirectory of /Library/StartupItems, which I thought is the appropriate place.
However, the app does not start, when a user logs in, instead I do have a permission problem with the following entry in Console:
    Apr 29 19:08:31 My-Conputer com.apple.launchd.peruser.501[114] (...[277]): posix_spawn("/Library/StartupItems/SlowFan/SlowFan.app", ...): Permission denied
    Apr 29 19:08:31 My-Computer com.apple.launchd.peruser.501[114] (...[277]): Exited with code: 1
    So I have 4 questions:
1/ I do not understand why I am getting the permission error, because "System" has read & write access to the folder as well as on the application. What am I missing? My own user also has the same read & write permission, so if I start it myself, it works fine.
2/ Just out of curiosity, do you know what is the difference between the files in "/Library/LaunchAgents" and "/Library/LaunchDaemons"?
3/ In addition, what I really wanted was to launch the app, when the system starts, even if no user is logged in. Is this possible?
4/ If not, how do I avoid that the app runs multiple times in each user context? I want it to run once only.
As usual, any hint is appreciated!
    Thanks,
    HAL

  • How to remove automatically launched items/apps?

Sorry if this is a duplicate question.
Actually i didn't find best answer for disabling items that automatically lauched when osx starting.
I've been removed all startup items from login startup items (System Preferences - User & Groups - Login Items).
Nothing found on StartupItems folder (Library - Startup Items) too.
But some items still automatically launched on Mac start (such as Splashtop Streamer, Busycall).
How to remove those startup items without completely uninstalling them?
    Any help would by appreciated.

Those are system modifications, and if you want them to do what they do, they have to load at startup. If you don't like what they do, remove them according to the developer's instructions, or refer to the developer for support.

  • Insecure startup items. Huh?

I just started getting the error message below this morning. and after checking all the library/startup folders, they are empty and there are no visible folders. What gives?
    INSECURE STARTUP ITEMS FOLDER DETECTED
Items in the startup items folder have not been started because the folder does not have the proper security settings.

The other day I installed HP Image Zone for my HP PSC 1510 All-in-on Printer/Scanner/Copier and began seeing this "insecure startup item" message upon startup. The startup items existed in my user library folder "/USER/LIBRARY/STARTUPITEMS", not system startup.
NOTE: I have been using this device for printing now for month without ever installing the software.
I located a closed discussion about this particular issue related top the "HP IO" and "HP TRAP" startup items. It is located here - http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10711531
When I check the permission settings for these objects I see me with Read & Write, Staff with Read Only, and Everyone with read Only. I do not see "System" or "Wheel" and can not add those, so unsure what this indicates.
After removing the items from the startupitems folder and re-booting I no longer receive this message (of course, that was to be expected). However, now I am not able to access my device (EXCEPT TO PRINT). In other words, I can still print to the device which I have been doing all this time without the HP Image Zone software installed. Upon removing these startup items, my machine can not seem to locate the device as a copier/scanner, only as a printer.
Looks like I may have to try re-installing OSX and run repair to see if that works, but wanted to share what I am experiencing and see if anyone has some tips.

  • Is it okay to delete SymSecondaryLaunch from my Log in at startup Items in System Preferences?  I no longer use any Norton products.

Is it okay to delete SymSecondaryLaunch from my Log in at startup Items in System Preferences?  I no longer use any Norton products.  I have no clue what SymSecondaryLaunch does but it appears to be related to Symantec.

You are not required to have any login items so yes, you can safely remove. However some applications will continue to add it's self back until completely uninstalled. You might have to download an install to get an uninstaller.

  • Unable to remove startup items

Hello everyone, I have a couple of startup items in my profile. I delete them every time from System Preferences but they come back again when I reboot. Please help me out, these items are slowing down my mac. I have noticed that it happens only with my profile but works fine with other profiles. I cannot delete or discard my profile because I have a lot of settings and programs in it. I need to fix it somehow.

  • OSX 10.6 .8 -- Firefox automatically starts when I boot up (MacBook Pro Intel). It is not in the Startup Items in System Preferences, and automatic startup is not checked in Firefox Options. Don't know where else to look.

How do I keep Firefox automatically starts when I boot up (OSX 10.6 .8 -- MacBook Pro Intel). It is not in the Startup Items in System Preferences, and automatic startup is not checked in Firefox Options.

    Hi fullrun-
Once Firefox is open, you should be able to open the Right click context menu on the icon. From there you select 'Options' and then de-select 'Open at Login'. Hope that helps.

Add more RAM or cut back on concurrent applications. Startup Item is irrelevant.
Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
    5. Reinstall Yosemite from Scratch:
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible

  • Firefox opens at startup on my iMac. It is not in startup items and not checked to open at login.

There aren't really any more details to add. I have checked everything I can think of in the Library folder and thrown out anything I thought might affect it. Firefox is not set as my default browser.
I have read many threads of people having this problem both here and on the Apple Support site. Most seem to be solved by unchecking "Open at Login" in the Dock icon or removing Firefox from the Startup Items in the System Preferences. Neither applies here. HELP!!! I like Firefox and use it from time to time but it seems the only way to stop this behavior is to remove it from my computer, which I will do if a solution can't be found.
    Thanks for your efforts.

Yes. I checked all of the places I could think of and those mentioned in the threads I read. Login items is what I was referring to when I said, "removing Firefox from the Startup Items in the System Preferences".
    This is a nefarious problem!

  • Insecure Startup Item Disabled

    Hello
I recently installed a HP Printer (HP PSC 1410 All In One) to my MacBook system running Snow Leopard 10.6.3 and just after I installed I uninstalled when finished. Since the uninstall however, I have been getting an error message at startup reading the following:
    Insecure Startup Item Disabled
"/Library/StartupItems/HP Trap Monitor" has not been started because it does not have the proper security settings."
I was just wondering what this meant and how to get rid of this annoying dialogue box which appears at each startup of my computer. Thanks in advance

The easiest way is to remove it from that folder. I would move it to the desktop, restart, and see if you get that message. Don't throw it away until you are sure you haven't lost any functionality.
    Hope this helps.

  • Unwanted Startup Items

Hello All, Years ago I had a USB wireless adapter and for some reason the drivers still load at startup. I can kill them, which speeds up the computer, but I cannot find where to remove them from the startup process. They are prismStatD and PrismStarterD. I looked in my /system/library/extension and in /library/extentions and startup items as well as used Spotlight and the Find command.
My question is, from terminal can I track the PID to a .conf file and edit it to not load.
    Thanks in advance,

  • Login Startup Items

I've updated my Tiger 10.4.10 to Leopard and now I am unable to open Settings -> User -> Startup Items. This opens an empty window after a while.

Does it really say "Startup Items" and not "Login Items"? They stopped calling them "Startup Items" several OS X versions ago so if yours says "Startup Items", that could indicate some very strange failure to update certain components (this assumes you are using "English" as the localization). An "Archive and Install" might be warranted under such circumstances.
Otherwise, you could try moving the "loginwindow.plist" file (not to be confused with the "com.apple.loginwindow.plist" file) from the user's "~/Library/Preferences" folder - perhaps it has become corrupted and preventing "System Preferences" from reading it, or there is some item common to both machines that the pref pane finds disagreeable. After removing the file, it will of course be necessary to re-add any login items.
