Removing the USB stick during suspend

I'm using Gnome and Nautilus as my volume manager, have the latest stable packages, on a Dell Inspiron 1520 laptop.
Suspend is set up to work through uswsusp.
Now if I insert a USB stick it is mounted automagically and works great, then I suspend, and while the laptop is suspended I remove the USB stick (happens sometimes, eg. forgot to remove it before), then after I resume Nautilus still shows that the stick is mounted . A user can't unmount it, only root can. Is there a way to fix this? Force HAL(?) to rescan what hardware is connected and adjust mountpoints accordingly or something?
Any hints would be appreciated.
Thanks

and while the laptop is suspended I remove the USB stick (happens sometimes, eg. forgot to remove it before)
You would do yourself a huge favor by waking it up and removing it, instead of removing it while in suspend, because eventually you *will* ruin the filesystem on it.
It is not a solution, but, very good advice. I hope you don't mind.
I guess you could create a pm script to unmount devices that match a pattern, say the UUID or LABEL of the stick? That would be executed upon suspending your machine.

Please explain me, how to remove an usb stick or memory chip? With experiences only in pc:s, I do not find on my first apple e.g. MacBook Air a solution. Until now I have succeeded to destroy one chip full of photos and - there's no life more in the port...
Someone told me just to remove the chip in clicking it to the trash can and voilá - it would be done. But as I did so, on the screen appeared a text which let me know, that that way had been the wrong one...
I should have clicked Finder plus something.... which I do not now remember but which was then not found behind the Finder.
So please would someone be so kind and tell me, where I can find explanations for the most simple functions. The manual I got does not include a clue.
    Thank you!

First make sure that no application is using or has open any files on the disk. Then:
Click and drag the disk icon on the desktop to the trash. Wait for the system to recognize the action, and the icon should disappear from the desktop. It is then safe to remove the device.
Alternatively, you can secondary click on the disk icon, and then primary click "Eject (name of disk)". Wait for the icon to disappear off the desktop, and then it is safe to remove the drive.
Here is a detailed help document on the subject.

  • How to run fsck.vfat for USB-stick during cRIO-9030 boot?

    Hi all,
we have a cRIO-9030 with a USB-stick. Sometimes after power loss the USB-stick filesystem (FAT32) gets corrupted and has to be checked/fixed. How can I configure cRIO LinuxRT to do that?
I've checked /etc/fstab, but it looks that the USB-stick is mounted somewhere else. I run mount - here is the line:
    /dev/sdc1 on /media/sdc1 type vfat (ro,relatime,fmask=0000,dmask=0000,allow_utime=0022,codepage=437,iocharset=iso8859-1,shortname=mixed,quiet,errors=remount-ro)
It would be nice if I can run fsck.vfat /dev/sdc1 every boot or when an error is detected.
    Thanks in advance,
    Nikolai

    Hi NickViz,
My name is Ed form National Instruments Technical Support, I have researched into the topic and found that it is possible to use the 'System Exec.vi' to complete the command during the initialization of your RT application.
You simply need to input your commands as a string just as you would to command prompt/terminal (depending on OS), you can also execute commands via SSH however this is one way communication between the RT application and the command shell.
I have included some links below to articles which describe the methodology as well as give some further explanation into the NI Linux Real-Time OS.

I hope this is helpful and you achieve what it is you need, do note you will need to enable SSH scripting as described in the article on using PuTTY for your Real Time device.

  • To upload photos from my pc onto my ipad using a usb stick. I bought a camera connector kit and tried placing the usb stick onto one of the white square adaptors, stuck it into the ipad2 and I got 'the device uses too much power'' message. Pls help.

I am not very familiar with the ipad2. I wished to transfer some photos from my pc (not an apple pc but that is the only one I have) to my ipad2 as I thought it would be easier to cull them, edit, crop etc to create albums for our recent trip (the photos are already on the pc and no longer on the camera memory card). When I place the usb stick on the adaptor and stick it onto the Ipad2 I keep getting 'device uses too much power/ requires too much power' message. I read somewhere on the internet that a usb hub could be used to solve the issue but that did not work either. What am I doing wrong? Is there actually a way around this problem. If not why does apple sell this product for Ipad users at all?
Thank you for any help/ solution you can offer.
    Regards

I'd ask that on the iPad forum.

  • Satellite C50-A-1FT - How to boot from the USB stick

    hi,
this is last stop really as have run out of ideas, have asked every techie that know including taking it to an independant computer store.
I am using a toshiba satelite C55 a-1d5, with windows eight preinstalled.
I am trying to get Ubuntu booting off a Toshiba G3 USB stick [sixty four gb capacity],theres nothing wrong with the stick or the multiple distros on it.
so have followed all the advice Ive found and obviously as woud usualy do-on the BIOS/UEFI screen have made sure the boot sequence has USB first, but when using the CSM boot order it wont boot the USB stick it just gets over runned by Windows 8.
I tried to deactive from the BIOS the "secure Boot" or something like that, but it seems to be already off... and its weird because my laptop is new. just bought it 2 days ago.
please can any kind soul take pity and offer reasons why this may be happening or even better, know how to get linux on it? thanks in advance

Seems that you could solve this issue disabling the secure boot in BIOS as well in registry:
    HKeyLocalMachine\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\ SecureBoot\State
(UEFISecureBootEnabled needs to be set to 0 to disable SecureBoot within the system)
But to be honest this should not affect the USB booting in case the Windows 8 (or Win 8.1) has been completely powered OFF.

  • Re: Satellite R630 - Rejects the USB stick

    Hello,
yesterday i bought a new laptop. Perfect piece, i really love it. The only problem i have is that when i want to use my usb stick, the laptop first takes it but few seconds later rejects it. And so on and so on. The effect he creates is that he constantly gives a sound that says that he found an usbstick. I cannot copy a folder before the laptop rejects the usb stick. Pretty anoying.
    Somebody?
    thanks!

    Hi Szyn,
Yes I can understand you its really annoying. This shouldnt happen normally
Anyway, I think you should try to update the chipset driver. Maybe something has muddled up the chipset drivers so the USB drivers dont work properly anmoyre
I would check the Toshiba website for newest chipset drivers and download them. Start the installation and follow the screen instructions.
If you have more questions you can post again ;)

  • Am I allowed to remove the Skype sticker?

    Hi,
I just got my new Satellite A505-S6973 a couple days ago and I love it already!
The only thing that bothers me though is that, like every other laptop, it came with a bunch of stickers all over it. I'm okay with the Windows and Intel stickers, but the bright blue skype sticker is clashing with the beautiful fusion finish!
Am I allowed to remove the sticker? Will it affect the warranty?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Absolutely not.  If you remove it your system will self destruct and you'll have nothing but a paper weight left.  It won't void your warranty though.
If you don't post your COMPLETE model number it's very difficult to assist you. Please try to post in complete sentences with punctuation, capitals, and correct spelling. Toshiba does NOT provide any direct support in these forums. All support is User to User in their spare time.

iPod nano ? generation w/ 8 GB, model A1236. Put on USB cable to charge from my computer. I'm not able to easily remove the cable from the iPod.
Any suggestions about how to do so?

Thanks for this simple solution-I lost the instruction sheet which came with my iPod and the answer wasn't in "iPod, The Missing Manual" - At least I couldn't find it. Your 'suggestion' was THE ANSWER.
PLEASE: Keep up the good help.

  • How to remove the EasyGuard sticker from my Portege?

My Portege laptop came with a really silly sticker on it advertising the EasyGuard feature. I have tried to remove it and have found that it makes a real mess.
Can you tell me how to get rid of the sticky mess so that I have a nice laptop without a silly sticker on it.

    Hi
You should be careful with using of any toxic fluid because it can destroy the notebook surface.
As far as I know you can get especially fluid from a computer dealer to remove the stickers and labels form the surface.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
First of all, check that you are looking for your USB drive in the correct place. To do it, first connect the USB drive. Then, open a Finder window (press the left icon of Dock) and choose your USB drive on the Finder sidebar, under "Devices". Finally, just copy the documents you need to the internal disk.
If you want to show the USB drive in Desktop, open Finder menu (on the menu bar) > Preferences > General, and tick "External drives"
