Removing XServe G4 Processor Fan

Hi Folks,
So, the fan near the processor tanked (stopped running) on our XServe G4. At the moment I have it sitting with the cover off near an air conditioner ... not ideal, but it's keeping it cool. I bought a replacement fan. I cannot for the life of me get a grip on the two screws that hold the thing in place! I'm afraid I'm going to strip them if I try much more. Is there some trick, some gizmo, some special Apple-only screwdriver that'll get these things off?
Thanks,
Jeff

OK, it's been that kind of week. There are no screws. You just have to pull HARD to pop it off the support posts. I guess if I searched "XServe G4 Blower" instead of "XServe G4 Fan" I would have found it. There's an hour I'll never get back .

  • Problem with processor fan.

Hi, since a few days ago the processor fan is not starting when I turn on the laptop, it just starts when I open any windows user session, it used to work fine, suddenly changed and I don't know how to fix it, also when Is not in "High performance" mode the fan just doesn't start till I go to energy options REactive the "Max performance" option in cooling  mode... I'm sorry for my poor explanation, my english is not very good, but I hope is enough to get a little help.
    Thanks.

The fans on laptop computers are thermostatically controlled so they don't turn on when the computer is first turned on. "Thermostatically controlled" is a fancy way of saying that the fans are turned on and off by the heat of the computer. Once the computer gets hot enough the fans turn on. This is a power saving feature to help save on battery power. When the computer's power setting is set for Performance, power is no longer a problem and the fan will come on more quickly and frequently. I have seen where the Bios has been changed to change the fan's heat settings, so you may want to make sure that you have the latest Bios. If the computer is not getting too hot or shutting down because of heat problems, I would not worry about the fan not turning on at startup.

  • MSI P6NGM-L system temperature and processor fan speed

    Hi folks,
I've got a MSI P6NGM-L board that is reaching a system temperature of 46ºC-47ºC at everyday load (not playing games or doing heavy work... just browsing, email, text editor, etc). My case has got a frontal and rear 120mm (exaustor) fan, and my processor (Core 2 Duo E7200), an Akasa AK-965BL cooler. My graphics board is a XFX Geforce 9800GT with Zalman FC-ZV9 cooler. Overall temperature is just fine, except for the system temperature, that is 32ºC when the system is turned on and is cold, and reaches about 47ºC after some time and using. I disabled the onboard NVIDIA on BIOS, but that didn't make any difference. Is that temperature OK for my configuration, or somehow high?
I thought about taking off the northbridge heatsink and applying Arctic Silver 5 in it, but I don't know if that would make any difference, and it would give me a big job, because I would have to take the board off... so I don't know if it's worth.
Another question, is P6NGM-L board PWM compatible? I tried using speedfan to control the processor's temperature but it says it's at 100%, and I know the cooler is in silent operation. If so, what software should I use to control the processor fan?
    Thanks for any help

I don't have a way to measure my room's temperature, but it's quite hot... something like 26ºC.
I thought that with all the cooling I've got inside my case the system temp would get lower, but it is still the same under normal load, even since my case had only one exaustor and stock coolers.
What about the processor's fan speed? Can I really change it by software? I plan to do some overclocking, so I would like to do tests with the processor cooler in full speed... I've googled all the way around, but couldn't find substancial information about P6NGM-L support for that.
    Thanks

  • Why does the processor fan run so much

The processor fan seams to run a lot while I'm using my computer.  It is very annoying.   Others people with the 13" air don't seem to have this problem.  Is there a setting I need to adjust?

I do not understand how it is possible for your Activity Monitor to have a display large enough to fit 63 processes when I can only show 33 on my 13" MBA. Something is not right.
I wanted to know in case you are driving an external monitor which could be a causal factor.
In any event those are a lot of applications to be running at the same time, and I would not be surprised that your fan is audible. Microsoft in particular is notorious for inefficient code and all its Office apps are running.
Quit those programs one at a time to determine which may be responsible.

  • [VIA] MS-6712 - Noisy Processor Fan

For the last 6 months or so when I switch my PC on the processor fan is very noisy (you can hear it at the other end of the house) like its running flat out.  It does this until Windows has finished loading then it quietens down to a normal background hum.   If I reboot the PC its fine, the noise only happens if the machine has been switched off for a couple of hours.
Since the problem started I've changed the processor fan, case, and psu which rules them out.  I can't even blame microsoft as the machine has been upgraded from 2000 to XP with no change.   The only thing I think it could be is something in the BIOS but can't see any obvious settings.  Has anyone got any other ideas?
    Motherboard: KT4V MS-6712 v1.x (VIA KT400 Chipset)
    Processor: Athlon XP2400+
    Processor Fan: Coolermaster (unsure which)
    Bios: V1.C

That is great!  I thought there was something more fundamental.
I will have a close look at that fan. It has a 80mm fan same as my Spire. If you are running at 1700 rpm, so can I. Can't find room for a 120 mm, which I really would like.

  • Removing and reinserting processor

I have a G4 Dual 533 which I am upgrading to dual 1.8 Sonnet Encore. I followed all of the instructions and removed the original processor card. When I took the new processor out of the bag, there were some pieces broken off of it so I need to exchange it.
There are two black pads (maybe thermal pads) on the original heatsink. I would like to reinstall my old processor card for use until the replacement gets here. Do I need to use thermal paste (I have none handy) or are those pads enough?
    Thanks for any help,

  • Xserve G5 processor number 2 to Hot ?

Xserver Dual 2,3 Ghz 2 Gb ram
    1 x 80 Gb HD (system disk)
2 x 500 Gb HD (data disk) (mirror)
When you look in server monitor you see that the processor 2 is always 73 degrees when processor 1 is 46 degrees but when you perform an action example disktools start up and you check the disk is go's to 85 degrees and higher. The fan's drive 10000 rpm or more (only by processor 2) lots of noise (normal I think. but when you quit the program and look in activity program and yoy see that there is no high activity the processor 2 stays on 73 degrees and not lower.
I reset pram and pmu chip no results
is Processor 2 and it's end or am i missing something ?
    CPU 1 inlet : 22 degrees Normal
    CPU 1 Ambient : 34 degrees Normal
    CPU 1 Internal : 46 degrees Normal
    CPU 2 inlet : 20 degrees Normal
    CPU 2 Ambient : 30 degrees Normal
    CPU 2 Internal : 73 degrees Normal

While your CPU 2 Internal temperature is technically within spec, sustaining 73 degrees will be problematic. Here's what's happening.
Your CPU 2 is hot. Hotter than CPU 1 for example. That, in and of itself, is quite normal. Likewise, running the fans at 10krpm is high. But while running the fans at 10krpm isn't terrible either, together these details tell us something important.
It turns out that your cooling system is having to work pretty hard to keep your CPU 2 cool, even under normal stress. This means you've got not one but two very small margins to deal with. First, with a processor at 73 degrees, even a small spike in temperature brings you over the warning threshold. This can happen within seconds – far faster than the fans can respond. Second, your fans have to work even harder to cool these temperature spikes. Additionally, your fans don't have much headroom, since they max out at around 14krpm.
So when you have a CPU spike (and AFP generates these all the time, even with as few as 5 people under very moderate usage), your CPU tips into the warning before the fans even have a chance to respond. Under extended load, your fans will run at close to their max to cool your processor back down below the warning, preventing them from being able to do much at all about a subsequent CPU spike.
So you're right. While this is "Normal", it's not good.
When it comes to temp problems here's the break down:
    - Air Temperature too warm
    - Insufficient air flow
Your inlet and ambient temperatures are textbook, perfect. So it's not the air in the room. Given the fact that your room has A/C, this shouldn't be surprising. So it's time to start thinking about air flow problems.
    Suspect the rack.
Are the doors on your rack solid or ventilated? If they are solid, try running with the doors open. Let the server sit for 3-5 minutes and watch that CPU 2 Internal temperature. If the temperature of the second processor drops below 65, you rack is preventing your Xserve from pushing enough air through itself. Solving this problem could be difficult.
If opening the doors makes little or no difference, the problem is inside your server. Recheck the entire airflow circuit, including all fans and intakes. Start at the beginning. There are two large intake vents on the front of your Xserve. There is a grating at the end of each of those that can catch dust bunnies. Normally this is the first place I go looking for airflow problems. But your inlet/ambient temperatures tell us that the gratings aren't clogged. If they were clogged, we would see inlet temperatures that were normal, and ambient temperatures that were high. But it's worth checking. This can be a lot trickier than it sounds. It took a flashlight and some patience to find those grates at the end of those air intakes, even after I had deduced their presence! And cleaning them was even harder. I have seen exactly the symptoms you are describing on three different Xserve G5's. All of them I have been able to diagnose as air flow problems. Don't be too quick to suspect a bad CPU.
Lastly, I have heard it mentioned that the Xserve G5 might be able to be temperature calibrated. If this is possible, I am not aware of a method for doing so. While we are an Apple Authorized Service Center, the tools we have to perform a calibration are not for Xserves. While I cannot rule out the possibility that perhaps Apple could perform a calibration on an Xserve, the apparent lack of information on the subject, seems to indicate that it cannot be done on an Xserve. Additionally, the only tool I have to perform these re-calibrations is the Apple Service Diagnostics CD. This CD never supported any Xserves after the Xserve (slot load), the second rev. G4 Xserve.
So, my educated guess is that Xserve G5's cannot be re-calibrated.

  • Problems with the processor , fan , and energy consumption

    Hello .
Well , for some reason , my two years old laptop started to behave in a weird way . I just ignored the slight slowdown with the boot because I believe it's to be expected with any machine but that's not the issue . Aside from the annoying fact that Windows 7 doesn't seem to make full use of the RAM and thus it only uses HALF - yes , HALF - of my 6 GB RAM , my PC seems to slow down regulary while I browse the internet . I recently knew about the task manager and decided to take a look to be shocked at how much RAM Firefox and Google Chrome use . Along with other necessary system tasks - which almost don't count - , they alone take 30% of the RAM capacity . That's unfortuenately isn't the issue either because I can close any of them when I want to work on other stuff . The issue here is that for no apparent reason , my processor seems to work harder than is necesarry even when the programs I see in the task manager don't need 5% of it's full potential ! With such work it heats up . On Toshiba Health Monitor I see it going to 70-75% in heat and the fan kicks up to 85% to cool it down . Of course , that leads to rapid power consumption that can suddenly shoot from 17% to terrible 60% with ABSOLUTELY NO PROGRAMMS CURRENTLY AT WORK ASIDE FROM WINDOW EXPLORER .
The good thing is that it doesn't happen all the time but it still worries me . Any ideas ?

See my post on your other thread to obtain your model and part numbers. It's difficult to discuss your unit's use of RAM and other problems without that info.

  • 10.4.8 + ADM Removal - Xserve Unresponsive

Updated Xserve G4 to 10.4.8 and now it will become unresponsive requiring hard reboot whenever I try to remove one of the Apple Drive Modules.
After Retrospect backup a script put's away the volumes related to the drive in the ADM we want to remove. The volumes are removed from the desktop and the server remains fine up until the moment the drive is removed. Then applications won't launch, menus won't open and we get the spinning beachball that only a restart by holding the power button down will fix.
It worked fine prior to running the 10.4.8 update. Any ideas?

I was thinking of a way that the appletalk on the Mac desktops connect to the Xserve server sharepoints.
As I am linked into Microsoft Active Directory the users will mount all there appletalk sharepoint on our Xserve, without having to enter there user name and password but to use there active directory password to authticate login automatically.
As this works if I connect by SMB no problem.
    If that makes sense?

  • Removing single core processor

    Hi,
I just recently bought an early 2006 Mac Mini.  I've ordered a newer duo core processor and additional ram.  Looking at the processor, I'm not sure how to remove it. There's no lever or locking mechinism that I can see.  Any help would be appreciated.  Here's the pic:

Based on your photos your model is not upgradeable. This is the upgradable one.

  • HP Split X2 (i3 processor) Fan Screaming a High-Pitched Whine

Fantastic HP.  Bought this laptop in late October.  Never dropped it, never stuck a sack of bricks on it, never operated it on a construction site or some other dirt-filled environment.  Here we are in February, 3 full months later, and the fan is screeching and whining like the laptop's 5 years old.
Is there somewhere on the HP site I can find parts for sale?  I stupidly opted not to get the warranty (I mean, what could go wrong with HP's build quality in that time, right?).  So now I'm going to enjoy, briefly, cracking open this piece of computer, rip out the malfunctioning fan, and put in a new one.  If only I can find one for sale.

I can answer your question about where to buy parts. You can purchase parts from the HP Parts Store, but I do not think this is the route you should take at first. HP devices come with a factory warranty. Now I do not know where you are located, but I would advise you to check to ensure that you are not in warranty before commiting yourself to replacing a fan. The replacing of the fan would void your warranty as well as cost you unnecessary money if you are in warranty. I would advise you to contact HP technical support for repair options. There is nothing saying you have to pay if you are not in warranty you can always make the repair as you intended.

  • Processor fan speed: is this value normal?

     Hi,
I own a Pentium 4 2.4 GHz mounted with the standard cooler that came on the "in-a-box" package. All this is mounted on an MSI 845PE Max2 FIR.
I'm reading CPU Fan rotation of about 2700RPM. Someone told me that this should be a lot higher (something near 4500RPM). Is this true?
By the way, I installed the SpeedFan software and tried to modify the rotating speed of some fans, but it didn't make any effect. Does my motherboard support this feature?
     Best regards,
