Remplacing Hard drive on MBP 15'

firstly, sorry for my poor english, not use to post in english (i'm a french guy)
i would like to know a few thing about MBP and waranty
is it possible to change HD of the laptop without cancelling the waranty ? i would like to put a 320GO/7200 RPM HD in it.
which brand and model is prefere to choose.
same thing for the RAM
i'll also need a external HD firewire, i think the Seagate FreeAgent Go 250 Go, anyone have test it
the MBP will be use with a MBox2micro, protools 8.0, and BDF2 (Drum vsti), connected with a Roland TD12 Vdrum
my other Mac are used with protools too (Macpro with protools HD 7.4, G4 with protools 6.7) so i'm used to work under mac, even if i'm a PC user (for gaming, and other personnal stuff)
i'll need this MBP for personnal use (and have a Mac home =), i've search for PC to use my proware, but really like to work under mac =) and the price a good compatible laptop PC are the same as the MBP

Having the hard drive changed is easy on the new MacBook Pros. I have noted links to some helpful resources for you to check out.
Just remember to use the install disks that have been included with your computer for having the operating system installed. Do not use the retail version or disks from another computer.

  • Hard Drive on MBP 15" makes more than normal grinding noise?

I have the new MBP 15" with a fujitsu 320GB hard drive, 5400 rpm. the other MBP that colleagues hhave are quite silent running. They have the 250 GB drives. This newly bought computer's hard drive makes a background noise, kind of a low grade grinding, that is loud enough for me to hear when playing itunes song on half way volume.
Any suggestions? Isa this the norm for the larger hard drive, or should it be as quiet as the 250 GB. The brand is Fujitsu. Is that significant.

Drives do vary in how much noise they make. I replaced a 30 GB Toshiba drive with a 120 GB Western Digital drive, and the WD did run a little warmer and makes a more audible whir, but has worked flawlessly since I installed it. I can barely hear my 250 GB Fujitsu if I put my ear next to the case.
However, I would describe my hard drive noise as a low hum or whir and not as a grind.
For your piece of mind, you might like to try running S.M.A.R.T. Utility:
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/32454
You can download the demo and run it several times for free.
A new drive should show zero errors.
If you can hear it over music, it may well be a grind and not a normal sound. If you are concerned, you might want to run it by Apple or an AASP. In the meantime, keep a good up to date backup.
    Good luck!

  • Streaming media from wireless external hard drive and MBP to TV?

Hi everyone. I have a retina MBP and have recently bought a Sony Bravia smart tv with wireless. I have a time machine (the new one) with an external hard drive connected to it with all my media, photo, movies etc. My tv is connected to my wireless from the time machine and I'm wondering how do I stream media from my external hard drive to my tv? And how do I stream media from my MBP to my tv wirelessly? I can't seem to figure it out. Also mirroring my MBP desktop to my tv wirelessly, can it be done without an apple tv? Thanks in advance.

I had the same issue. It was due to the appalling performance of the USB connection to the disk, not any issue with the wireless connection itself. My iMac was within 7m of the router, on the same floor, with a clear line of sight and good reported connection speed. I have the latest late-2009 version of the AEBS running the 7.5 firmware. This has loads of performance problems (read these forums). I'm hoping that Apple will release the new firmware (7.51) for download soon and then the issue may be resolved.

  • Can I upgrade my hard drive  of MBP 2012 without voiding the warranty

I am planning on purchasing a new MBP (2012) 13" with the miminum Hard drive capacity. I wanted to replace the HD with my own SSD. I am comfortable doing it myself, but will it void the Apple warranty?

As long as you don't break anything and the new part is not covered by warranty/AppleCare.

In fact I just upgrade the RAM today to 16GB and only took about 5 minutes.
Also your going to need to know how to reinstall 10.8 onto the drive.

  • Can't install OS X on 160 GB hard drive in MBP

I bought one of those perpendicular 160 GB hard drives for my MacBook Pro, and installed it. It works great, exactly as advertised, however there's one problem: both Boot Camp and the Mac OS X installer refuse to install onto the hard drive. Boot Camp gives an error, saying "Your startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition. Back up your startup disk and use Disk Utility to format your startup disk as a single Mac OS Extended (Journald) volume." It is already formatted this way, and the drive (which I cloned from my 100 gb MBP drive) works great. How can I make it so Boot Camp will install? Do I need to reformat and reinstall everything? Is there any intrinsic reason why the 160 GB drive, or one cloned from another source, shouldn't work? I did repair permissions and checked the drive.

    Peter.
Hopefully you have an external firewire drive you can boot from. (Thats what I make my daily backups to). Boot from this external drive and run disk utility and make sure that the drive IS actually formatted as GUID this is the Intel HFS format. If its not you should format as the Intel partition and then re-dupe the drive from your backup.
If that doesn't fix it then there might be a BootCamp limitation on the startup volume. Its possible Apple didnt foresee this large a partition and there may be some glitch. I know when I installed my 160G drive (2 weeks ago) I forst reformatted the drive by booting from an external forewire drive and wiping the new internal drive, leting DU create the single partition and formatting in DU. I noticed that the drive was actually preformatted HFS but not the Intel version.
    HTH,
    Peter

  • External hard drive crash MBP

Lately my MBP have been acting wierd whenever an external hard drive is connected to it with USB. Everything can work fine a few days and then randomly the computer will hang and beep repeatedly. This problem have occured with 2 different external hard drives and never when no hard drive was connected.

You might want to look at some of the hard drive troubleshooting documents at the following site:
    http://scsc-online.com
Based on what you've written it would seem to me that you're either experiencing problems related to intermittent interconnections in the hard drive OR your beginning to have system problems and the correlation with them to the hard drive is coincidental. Intermittent connection problems are most often with faulty cables.
If the computer is beeping on startup, it usually implies a RAM problem, FWIW.

  • Transfering data from a Windows XP/PC external USB hard drive to MBP.

I recently purchased a 15.4" Macbook Pro and it is my first Mac computer. I have a USB 2.0 external hard drive currently attached to my Windows XP based PC and I am hoping to a.) get the information currently on this drive on to my Macbook Pro and b.) use this drive--even if reformatting is necessary--as an external device on my Macbook Pro.
Both computers are connected to the same wireless network (via a Linksys Wireless-G hub) and both have USB 2.0 ports--but my PC has no firewire ports.
I am simply wondering: what is the best way to get the information from the external harddrive to my Macbook Pro? The MBP didn't seem to "recognize" the drive initially when I plugged it into the laptop's USB port.

oh yes, you are unfamiliar with windows sharing. no prob.
First off you have to set up a network on your windows PC. I don't know how savvy you are with your PC, but basically you have run the network setup wizard. You might also have to set up a protocol in your network properties (usually IPX will do the trick). If you click on the windows start button and see a network button near the my computer button you are most of the way there.
Once you have your computer set up for networking you need to enable sharing, which you also do in the network properties (there is a checkbox somewhere).
Lastly, you need to specify which folder(s) you want to share! Just right click on the drive (D: for example) in my computer and click 'sharing'. Naviagate the menus and enable sharing.
Your MBP is already set up for talking to windows networks, so just go to finder and click on networks, pick the workgroup that you specified when you set up your network on your windows machine and click ok. A connection to your external drive should appear. Now you can drag and drop all the files you want.
Sorry if this is confusing, but I can't really rememeber all this stuff off the top of my head.
If you want more clarification, search for 'how to share in windows XP' or something like that.
    Good luck

  • Recommended USB Hard Drive for MBP

I purchased a Lacie d2 external hard drive (250 GB) when i purchased my MBP. I had trouble understanding the "installation instructions" (this is my first mac). So i turned to the forum to assist, and in my travels discovered many people were not happy with the performance of the Lacie devices.
Is there an External Hard drive that works well with macs and is of good quality?
    Richard
    15" MBP   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Well, you just buy an enclosure that's to your liking / requirements (that is, USB 2.0, for a SATA drive), then buy a
Then you take your enclosure's manual, read how it's dissasembled (either screws, usually philips, or a simple latch of some sort - nothing complicated), open it up, put your hard drive inside (be sure to buy the right size, i.e. 2.5" if your enclosure is 2.5", 3.5" if your enclosure is 3.5"; and the right type - SATA in this case) and connect the cables (you CAN'T connect them wrong, shapes of the connectors makes it impossible) and close the whole thing up again.
That's it. It's no more complicated than putting a little box in a slightly bigger box and connecting two cables.
There's always a slight chance it will end up being incompatible in some way with your machine, but that happens with already assembled, brand name external drives as many posts on this forum can atest.

  • Sata or IDE hard drive in MBP?

    Hi all,
I have a MacBook Pro 2007 Intel core duo 2.4 which has decided not to boot up anymore. I have been informed from a tech guy at work that it is most probably the logic board. So have decided to transfer my photos/movies/music files from the hard drive and on to my wife MBP under a different user.
I have been told that the easiest way to do so is by making my hard drive into an external one and then connect it to a new computer and drag the wanted files across e.g  photos/movies/music (this is possible right???). However I don't know if the hard drive is SATA or IDE nor what the dimensions are of the physical drive, therefore I don't know what enclosure/caddie to buy.
Any advice on the enclosure or other ways of getting my file off what be great.

For a laptop drive, you will need a 2.5 inch enclosure although ebay will list them probably as a laptop hard drive caddy.
If your drive is IDE, the drive will look like this:
    http://www.mp3car.com/attachments/general-mp3car-discussion/5576d1097012581-50-p in-laptop-ide-convertor-ata5.jpg
It it's SATA (which I suspect it may be) it will look like this:
    http://www.datarecoverytutorial.com/wp-images/recover-data-from-laptop/laptop-sa ta-hard-drive.jpg
The physical size of the drives are both the same, but if it IS IDE, then it may have a convertor attached to it that looks like this:
    http://l.thegreatchai.com/ide_laptop.jpg
When you buy the caddy, you will likely have to remove this convertor to plug it in. It just pulls off, but make sure do it gently because you don't want to bend or break the pins of the drive itself.
By the way, buy the caddy off eBay and do not spend more than £5/$5. It will likely come with a USB cable and carry case.

  • How thick a hard drive in MBP 15"

I know that a 17" MBP can handle a 12mm thick hard drive, but can the 15" MBP? The point of this question is that the largest drives (750GB and 1TB) are 12mm thick but smaller drives are usually 9mm thick.

The newest models with the Unibody construction can accommodate the higher drives, but the older aluminum body ones cannot. The older models require disassembly to install a drive, but the newer ones have the drives situated so that they are user replaceable like the MacBooks. Thus, the can use the thicker drives.

  • Changing Hard Drive in MBP? Possible?

Is it possible for the user to swap out the hard DRive in a macbook pro? Anyone done it yet? I have the 2.16, 1gb ram and 100gb 5200 drive. Looking to replace it with a 7200. Anyone know how difficult it is to do on a MBP? Thanks!
    Steve

Yes its possible and is easy as long as you have a plastic spudger thing so you don't damage your MBP case

  • Fitting larger hard drive to MBP 13"

Hi I'm a new convert to MAC and I am still getting to grips with OSX. I have a late 2011 13" MBP with a 500GB drive and would like to fit a larger and possibly faster hard drive. When doing this on a PC I have used Acronis true image to create an image of my hard drive on an external drive then swapped in the new HD restored the image and then resized the partition to take advantage of the larger drive.
Are there any issues to be considered regarding drive compatability (will a 7200 rpm drive work ok or are there any brands to favour or avoid) and what software do i need to clone and restore the exisiting drive? any advice would be appreciated
    thanks
    Mike

Sorry to tell you there is no program like Acroins TI for the Mac/OS X system. Which I have used on the windows side for years.
There is what are called Cloning software. But they don't copy/clone the compete hard drive. They only clone visible partitions and leave behind any hidden partitions. Which may of been fine for older Mac OS's until Lion. With the normal install of Lion there is a hidden Recovery partition created that you can boot into to do diagnostics, disk operations and the like and to re-install the OS if needed (by downloading the OS from the apple website).
So if you are going to replace the original hard drive with a bigger, faster model then you can use one of these cloning programs to make a bootable copy of the OS partition along with any programs and files you have on the drive. But you will need a way to get the function of the hidden recovery partition so you can re-install the OS if you ever need to (and lets not kid ourselves. The OS may need to be reinstalled just it does sometimes in Windows. If it didn't there would not be forums like this one and many others for the Mac/OS X platform).
To gain back the functionality of the hidden Recovery partition Apple has made available a download that contains the complete Recovery partition files that you can burn to disc or load on a USB thumb drive. Sorry don't have a link to it but a google search will turn it up.

  • External Hard Drive with MBP C2D

    Greetings Everyone,
I just purchased a new C2D MBP. I have a Seagate 250 GB external (USB) hard drive that works great with my PowerBook G4 1.67 GHz, Dell Dimension, and MacBook 1.83. However, this drive does not work on either of the USB ports on my MBP.
My MBP does something strange to this drive. After plugging the drive into my MBP, it will not work in any other computer until I power it down. I thought this was a bit strange.
Is there anyone reading this forum with an external USB hard drive that does or does not work on your MBP?
I would like to hear of others' experiences with external drives. I would greatly appreciate any replies.
    Sincerely,
    Roger
MacBook Pro C2D 2.16 GHz, 2 GB RAM, 160 GB HD   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Funny how I had exact same problem (Seagate 300Gb drive, works great with PB G4 1.67, worked fine with 1st Gen MBP 2.0Ghz, new c2d MBP 2.16 does something strange to this drive. After plugging the drive into my MBP, it will not work in any other computer until I power it down.) - I am sure you get errors in system log after plugging in the HDD (just open Terminal.app and type sudo dmesg to verify)
I called AppleCare, they had me take it to store to confirm the problem. Next Apple initiated return. Now I am sitting without a laptop since Nov 8 and replacement will come on Nov 17th at the worst and 15th at the best.
I would suggest you call Applecare and have them initiate a return. The USB controller has a problem. Let AppleCare know of the details of your problem.
Forgot to add - Since it also is a OS issue (I had kernel panic after plugging/unplugging the external USB drive) I filed a bug report with Apple.
You can also file a bug report with Apple - http://bugreport.apple.com) and remember to provide drive model, serial number and model number, and dmesg output with errors in the report

  • 2nd hard drive questions MBP 2011

First and foremost, I want to say thanks to everyone who's been a help... Got my [now] secondary 2011 MBP running smoothly without the fans blaring or the SSD read/write time slowing down insanely.
So backstory, When I bought an SSD, for a couple bucks I also picked up a hard drive mount to replace a somewhat functioning optical drive. I did replace that, and I just put my old HDD in its place. The old HDD brings up a couple of issues.
    1. I am fairly certain the old HDD is going to fail soon
    2. It's "loud." After getting used to an SSD on my new macbook, as well as an SSD on this old one I am typing on now, the HDD is relatively loud in quiet environments.
    3. It's battery use. I am well over the 1000 cycle recommended for MBPs but the battery is still holding a good charge, maybe not as efficient, but it works well. But, I did notice shorter battery life with the 2nd hdd.
I was able to somewhat fix 2 and 3 by going into terminal and having the HDD stop spinning after 1 minute.
    TLDR:
Which brings me to my questions:
1.What HDD is recommended for quiet performance (and would be faster than my 5400 rpm drive with 40 mb/s read/write speeds in real world tests)?
    2. Would an SSD be recommended? I mean the optical drive is sata 2 so there will be a bottle neck.
    3. If I went the SSD route, how would I enable trim on the secondary drive? or will the trim support from my main drive transfer over? (I simply downloaded trim enabler rather than going into terminal to enable trim).
    4. low price is always a bonus.
    BONUS QUESTION:
So on my old HDD i had MS office 2011. It isn't working with maverick and I lost the install CD. Any ideas?

    6 g/sec SSD or a 6G/sec mechanical hard drive.
If SSD then go to OWC and purchase it. Then you will not need Trim Enabler. Purchase most any other SSD and you'll need Trim Enabler. Any modern mechanical drive will work although much slower than SSD but you obviously are used to it.

  • Replace hard drive on MBP 15" 2006

My laptop has 100 GB. I would like to upgrade to bigger hard drive. Where can I buy one and who can replace it for me?

...I had an Apple Auth. service provider do it...
Many a time, it is worth it to pay for "peace of mind!"
... it's nice to have all the space in my computer!
And you now have newer technology installed...In my case (a) the battery life is unchanged, (b) my MBP is quieter, and (c) although un-scientific, I could swear things are "quicker" for me with the upgrade.
