Rename client computer via ARD and Automator

Does anyone know of a method or action to rename (Computer name) Macs using AppleRemoteDesktop and Automator?
I have over 700 laptops on a school network that I would like to rename based on a tab deliminated text file containing the all the mac (ethernet) addresses and the assocated user.
I have tried sending a unix script and the text file via ARD to change the computer name via scutil, but it doesn't work consistently.

You should be able to use AppleRemoteDesktop to rename the remote computer. Once you are connected to the remote computer, just go to "System Preferences...", and click on "Network" and change the computer name.
If you are a non-administrator of ARD, you may need to turn on the access privilege to rename the remote computer. Go to "Preferences..." in ARD, and click on "Security" button, and turn the access privileges on.

  • Accessing a Windows computer via ARD

Just downloaded the ARD app and have successfully connected to my wife's MacBook, but I'm having troubles connecting to a Windows XP computer using RealVNC. I'm not sure what user name and password ARD is looking for from the XP computer. When connecting to the XP computer via RealVNC viewer, I'm not asked for a username (It's greyed out) but only a password.
    Any insights?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi
From the mac can you telnet to the PC on port 5900? Instead of paying for the Enterprise Version of RealVNC to install on the mac you could have used the free RDC for Mac:

  • External HDs not showing up on computer via firewire and usb

All external hds do not show up on the computer via firewire or usb. I must have perfomed some updates with my hardware plugged in. Does anybody know how to get this fixed?

Thought you could use this info about getting FireWire to work!
First, you should always Repair Permissions in Disk Utility before and after any update; I would do that now. If you installed your update with FireWire plugged in, your Mac may not recognize it anymore.
Try resetting your FireWire ports by disconnecting all FW devices, shut down your Mac and unplug it from AC power (wall socket) for 30 minutes. plug it back in and try FW.
If that did'nt work, download the combo update from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update, disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse, Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try. Yours is the 10.3.9 Combo update. Others reading, download the Combo that applies to your system.
If that still did'nt get it Zap the PRAM. While restarting Mac hold down the following key combo Command-Option-P-R. Keep holding those keys down till you hear the second start-up chime, then release.
For those of you with Macs that are not PowerBooks or iBooks, a bad internal battery can cause FireWire to not be recognized, so make sure it's good!
    Good Luck!
    Cheers!

  • Internet via airport and other computer via ethernet and hub

    Is this possible?
    Network 1:
I have a macbookpro. I connect to the 'net via airport and a wireless router-modem. I use dhcp with manual address (192.168.1.5, because we have numerous computers here). All's sweet.
    Network 2:
I need to work on a linux box which doesn't have wireless. It's a pain to connect it to the wireless router directly (although this does work), so I have an ethernet cable and hub and cable to connect it to the mbp directly. I configure ipv4 manually and can telnet etc to the linux box (which has its own ipaddress specified already) IF the airport is disconnected.
But I want to run both at the same time. I know I can work on the linux box and surf at the same time IF I connect the linux box to the router (by ethernet cable). But what if I want to have the wireless and ethernet on my mbp together?
Do I need to specify different ip addresses on my mbp for the ethernet and wireless? I've set it both ways and it doesn't seem to work with them either the same or different. If I go to Network Port Configurations (in Network) and move "Airport" to the top, I can surf but not telnet to the linux box. If I have Ethernet higher in the list, I can telnet but not surf. This is the case whether the ip addresses are the same or different.
Is it possible to do what I want, or just not possible?
    No I don't have a crossover cable.

Realised that I needed two networks with different ids.

  • Preemptive crash correction via ARD and/or LOM?

I've been having some very strange crashes that no one can seem to figure out. Problem already posted here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11366714&#11366714
Had a couple consultants already out and they can't find anything and nothing ever stands out in the Console logs. Gonna try a kernel dump probably next week when my users are all away (summer break at the university it's at). There's still staff over the summer that need to log in for events that happen over the summer and I don't have to be on campus for those times. The crashes usually happen overnight and I won't know about it until the person calls me--often only minutes away from needing the system online (and it takes 10-20 minutes for my current technique of using LogMeIn and navigating through Server Monitor and initiating a restart that way).
ANYWAY, in the mean time, is there some way I can be notified when it's down before a user has to call me? I'm sure the server can't let me know directly when it crashes, but I've got an ARD machine constantly connected that would know when the server goes offline. Is there some way it could email me when such an event happens? If not through ARD, is there some other program that can continually monitor the server and send me alerts?
Related, is there a program that can remotely interface directly with the LOM module? Ideally from my iPod. I guess theoretically I could use Server Monitor, but my mac network is sandboxed inside the main campus' PC network and the PC guys have been running me around for the past 10 months about getting me my own external IP address to connect to my internal router (that's connected to the main network to provide my network with internet access). However, an ideal solution would be something directly from my iPod. I've got a couple other handy programs I like (Server Admin and iStat), but neither of them can talk to the LOM (so not worth burning down the PC IT director's door to make sure they can get through once I'm off campus).
    Thanks.

Again, it's great having you on speed-dial here, Antonio. I've been thinking of external faults lately, myself, but that's SO troublesome to pin down. It's also so intermittent that a "solution" may not be readily apparent (I've had it crash twice in two days and go almost two weeks without incident). I'd been looking at Splunk to help me catch anomalies across my entire network, but being so new to that level of reporting, I haven't really made heads or tails out of that, yet.
I stopped using Time Machine for backups a while ago (I had suspicions the hourly backup was interfering with consistent video captures so stopped using it to be safe). The UPS is brand new (purchased at the time of the server last August), so I'm hoping it's not that, but will try taking it out of the loop as well. Most of my switches/routers are brand new, but I do have an old switch (10/100 that I'm using for some old eMacs because I ran out of ports on my new gigabit switch) and an old wireless router I'm using in a rarely used area.
Failing that, I'm screwed if it's a cabling issue. Most of it's a new install, but I honestly don't know how up to par the entire network cabling is--there's a few higher ups that like to cut corners to "save money", so there's a chance for anything.
At least we're in summer break now so I can take it down to just a complete sandbox with direct connects to a minimal number of clients and no outside access to give it a "clean" a start as possible and slowly work back up...
And cpragman, I saw the SSH iPod stuff, but the server wasn't responding to SSH from a local client machine when crashed, so I didn't pursue it further. It just blows me away that I've seen dozens of apps for PC servers and only 2 or 3 for Mac products...you'd think Apple would be all over interconnectivity of all their hardware.

  • How to connect to remote computer using ARD and AE

Does anyone have detailed instructions on how I can us my AirPort Extreme and setup all the ports to allow the use of ARD remotely?

You can configure your AirPort Extreme for ARD using the AirPort Utility. ARD is one of the choices under Port Mapping.
You get to the port mapping option, as follows:
    Run the AirPort Utility.
Select the AirPort Extreme, and then, select Edit.
Select the Network tab to enable it.
Click on the "+" button under the Port Settings field.
Click on the drop-down arrow to the right of the Description field. (see image below)
Select Apple Remote Desktop. This will automatically populate the other fields on the page.
Select Save, and then, select Update.
Allow the base station to reset.

  • Create/ Rename Network Location via ARD

I have been trying to figure out how to setup a new network location for all of my client computers (55 of them) without having to manually access the machines (either physically or remotely).
The command "networksetup" is supposed to be able to do this according to this page: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=RemoteDesktop/3.0/en/ARDC880.html
Can anyone help me out here?
    Cheers,
    Mike

Do you know of any references?
I found location information in /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist
Could I use PlistBuddy to write the information needed to describe a location? From the scutil man page, I don't know how I'd use that command, but I'm open to learning. I just need to know where to find the documentation.
    Thanks for your replies.

  • Silently/remotely upgrading clients from 10.6 to 10.7 via ARD/Script

    Hi!
Apple finally made it possible to upgrade from a major OS (10.6 to 10.7) via an application running on the client, rather than having to boot of a DVD on 100 individual computers.
Does anyone know of a way to kick this installation procedure off remotely?
Currently I am remoting onto the machines via ARD and manually clicking the "Install Mac OS X Lion" app, then choosing Next, Next, Next, Install
it would be nice to be able to schedule this via an ARD task so the installer runs silently without the need to click on the GUI to kick off the installation.
    Any ideas?
    TIA!
    FZ

I can add it's the same with upgrading to Lion... So I guess they changed some driver code between 10.6.7 and 10.6.8 and its not compatible with my logic board.
    Annoying tbh..

  • Viewing Leopard Clients Via ARD - Desktop Picture is locked?

Anyone notice the Leopard desktop background via ARD is always that default purple space picture, even those the real desktop pic may be something different?
I also noticed that you cant change the desktop pic of a remote Mac via ARD. It uses the file located in /System/Library/CoreServices/DefaultDesktop.jpg
What's really bad about this is the simple fact that the "space" image looks horrible via ARD and slows down the sessions too.
Try it yourself: go to a Mac and change the desktop pic manually from the console (sitting at the Mac). Then go to another Mac with ARD Admin installed and view the original Mac (client) via ARD. Weird huh?

maybe its because my g4 isn't actually connected to a monitor that a desktop picture isn't shown...its basically a headless mac just used for storage and sometimes as a node in Logic but it is totally controlled by ARD. Under tiger it was ok so maybe its just a leopard thing

    Hi,
Yes, but when sending 2 print jobs from 2 computers at the same time, the wreless job will fail. In many case it will recover itself but sometimes it can't.

  • Fast transfers via drag and drop w/ARD, but painfully slow on AFP...?

So, we've tested this using the same exact file on the same machine (same internet connection and all that):
If I open up ARD and then control our server with it via my laptop, then I open up my personal afp folder on the server itself via ARD and take a file from my laptop and drag it over to the server folder using ARD, it transfers fast.
Now, If I try it the 'conventional' way (without ARD open at all) and just go the command+k (or "connect to server") route and try to drag the same file over the the same folder as before, it will take at LEAST 10 times as long, if not more.
Can anyone explain why this may be occurring? Clearly, it's not the network since transferring a file the first was was lightning fast. So, it's got to be something either on my machine or on the server that the afp folder is hosted on that's choking up with connection somehow.
    Any thoughts?

I've read somewhere, that ard uses multicasting for distribution of files.

  • Cant send UNIX commands via ARD

I have ARD, and the option to send UNIX commands is greyed out. Help?

On the client, apple menu, system preferences, sharing, Remote Management.
If allow access is set to all users, then click the options button.
else, select the user your using to connect to the client, and then click the option button.
Make sure every thing is checked.
    click ok
    try again on ARD.
    Other things to try:
    quit and re-open ARD.
delete, then  and re-add the client computer from ARD.
unchecking, and then re- checking remote management on the client. (to force the service to restart)

ARD only works with Windows computers if the Windows computer is running VNC server software.  Even then it can only control and observe.  Do you have this installed?

Have you tried deleting the client in ARD and then try to add it back? That seems to fix quite a few problems like this.
I have a similar (or possibly the same) issue with one of our client computers. It has been working fine for months, but last week or so it appeared offline. When I tried to delete it and add it back, I couldn't. It didn't show up in the "Scanner" and when I tried to add it manually with the IP address it saw it, but authentication failed. And I'm sure I have the correct username/password because I have another computer with ARD that can see it and control it just fine. And I've even deleted it and added it back on that computer with no problem. It's really strange. I haven't been able to figure out how to get it working again.

  • How do I rename Client's HD in ARD?

    Hello,
    What I'm trying to do:
Delete an application in the /Volumes/Macintosh HD/Applications directory via ARD
    Problem:
Some people rename their HD to whatever they want causing my remove command to not work using "Macintosh HD"
    Solution:
How can I rename the client's drive to Macintosh HD?

Your remove command doesn't need to contain the full path.
Just send a command similar to *rm -r /Applications/filename*
