Rename elements in Layer Pallette

Would be great to have the ability to rename all the elements in the layer pallette, just like in Photoshop. As it stands if I have 100 rectangles on a page, they are all just called "Rectangle" there is no way to differentiate between them.

Does anyone have an idea how can i do this?

Photoshop Elements 9 Layer Mask Difficulties

Hi,
I am trying to use the Photoshop Elements 9 layer mask tool but every time I brush over my image to hide sections of it, the image merely becomes faded-out, as if I were using a brush with a low opacity. However, my brush opacity is at 100%, as is the opacity for the layer mask itself. I have made sure that I am using a black brush, that my brush mode is set on normal, that the layer mask mode is set on normal, that the image's color mode is RGB, and that the layer mask is selected when I am painting on it. I have reset all the tools to their default settings, and have gotten rid of all other layers except for the image in question and the background layer so that nothing is obstructing my view. Whenever I paint on the layer mask, the thumbnail shows the black areas in which I painted, as it should; however, the image is still apparent. Meanwhile, when I use the eraser tool, areas I erase disappear just fine. What am I doing that is causing the layer mask tool to behave in this way?

If you press the D key then the X key, does that make any difference when you paint on the layer mask?

Clicking in Layer Pallet Makes AI Crash

Hi Everyone,
I am having a problem with AI when I click on a layer in the Layer Pallet AI crashes.
I am running AI on:
Windows XP Professional Version 2002
Dell Optiplex CX745
Intel core 2 cpu
2 GB of RAM
This problem does not occur all the time. AI seems to be rather temperamental about it. I am not able to replicate the problem on command.
Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.

Moving Elements in Layer Groups

I need feedback as to how to move elements around within layer groups. I always organize my psd files by setting up lots of layer groups. I've noticed that with CS3, that I am unable to move just one layer within a group without everything in the group moving. For example, If I have a group and within that group I have a text layer, and other layers with various elements, If I want to move the type, everything goes with it even though I haven't linked them altogether. Am I missing something? I don't remember this with earlier versions. It is driving m crazy. Is there a preference I have to set? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Is your Move Tool option set to Auto-Select: Group? Change it to Auto-Select: Layer.
Or just turn it off to disable any Auto-Select..

Exporting Photos From Aperture to Photoshop Elements for Layer-Editing

Back when I paired iPhoto with PSE to do layer editing, it was easy to export the first layer-picture from iPhoto, then click-and-drag the second photo directly on top of the first in PSE, then 'stretch to fit'.
I've since moved to Aperture 3, and although I can 'edit in Photoshop Elements' the first picture, I can't drag or export so that it superimposes ready for opacity adjustment and effects...

What happens if you select both images in Aperture, and then click to Edit in External Editor?

Renaming element names in XML

I need to rename some nodes in an XMLType. What will be the appropriate way to do this change? Below is an example input followed by the desired output. Notice that some elements have V2 appended at the end in the output.
(Note: The actual input XML has many more elements that have been omitted in the sample below, only the ones needed to be renamed are shown).

For now, I've used REPLACE to solve the problem. I get String value of the incoming XMLType in a clob, do REPLACE and then change it back to XMLType. The source of the message is an external system. The message comes through a queue. The external system is moving to a new xml message format in an upcoming release. This change is needed only temporarily to handle both new and old messages by the receiving system during the transition period.

Layer Pallet issues with CS5 files in CS6

Opening Illustrator CS5 files in CS6 causes the visibilty icons, layer names, and layer thumbnails to disappear from the layers pallet. Objects are still there as are the layers and sub layers but I am unable to identify them in the layers pallet (see screen shot of CS6 panel and CS5 layeers panel). Have tried changing Panel Options. Have also tried changing the file names which it lets me do but disappear as soon as I leave the pallet. Also have tried pasting into a new document with "paste remember layers" but they arive in the new document the same way. The only thing that seems to work is pasting one layer at a time into a new document, and naming it at that time. This also provides the layer thumbnail. This is not a small issue as I have thousands of CS5 files which I will need to work with.
I am on a iMAC, running OS X 10.6.8

Try turning off the "Do not print" for this layer

Yes, see if the following gives the results your looking for:
1. Steps 1 and 2 are the same.
2. The part where it says add layer mask, click on the background layer and
    add an levels adjustment layer. (Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Levels) Click on layer 1 and select group with previous.
    (Layer>Group with Previous or Add Clipping Mask)
3. Steps 3 and 4, instead of apply image, click the eye icon on the levels layer to make
   the levels layer and layer 1 not visible.
Click on the background layer and then do a select all, copy. (Select>All) then (Edit>Copy)
   Alt-click the levels mask and paste (Edit>Paste) (a grayscale image will be pasted into the mask).
   Deselect (Select>Deselect).
4. Step 5 is the same.
5. Steps 6 and 7, click on layer 1 to make it visible and then click the levels layer mask
    to make the mask active, Then run the gaussian blur filter on the mask.
6. Step 8 is the same.

Elements 9 Layer Folders

Hello!
I am currently evaluating Elements 9, and am curious about one feature I use with PS CS5 at work: Layer Folders, and applying masks to Layer Folders. Does anybody know if there is a plugin or hidden feature or something I am missing that allows this kind of thing?

Script for renaming selected shape layer items

Does anyone know if such a script exists?
That is to say, a script that renames the selected sub-items of a shape layer (paths, groups, shape generators etc).
Am aware there's already scripts to rename selected layers and layer masks. Have attempted to rewrite these to deal with shape layer items, but to no avail.

Rename layers with layer 1, layer 2 till and layer N

and layers with are left out without renaming should be put in a new layer set or group in layers separately in the same file.

I don’t think one can select Layers in the Layers Panel or on the Canvas while a Script is running.
One could select the Layers via a dialog, but that would take focus and need to present a list of the Layers.
Alternatively it might be possible to set up a work-around by selecting a Layer, invoking a Script (either by Keyboard Shortcut or from a Configurator Panel) that stores data (the activeLayer in this case), repeating that as often as needed and at the end of the selection process trigger another Script (or possibly the same with the shift-key pressed) that then processes that stored information.
But maybe someone else has more insightr or a better idea.

How to rename element (node) names in an XMLType column?

I have a source table with a xml data stored in an XMLType column.
The xml contains elements/nodes identified by numbers. I need to replace the numbers with the appropriate names.
The plsql below does this, but has two issues:
i. It selects the data into a clob and does a text replace on the elements in a loop. This works, but is super slow for 3500+ xml rows (about 500 node pairs per row).
ii. Once the data has had the element numbers replaced with the names, it inserts the new xml (clob wrapped in xmltype function) into the table with the XMLType attribute.
The problem with the latter action is that it is failing due to nls client vs server settings, or so it appears from what I could dig up. The actual error message:
ORA-19202: Error occurred in XML processing
LPX-00242: invalid use of ampersand ('&') character (use &)
Error at line 3
There are come entities in the original xml like "" (the degree symbol).
My question is two-fold:
a). Can I replace the element names without straying from the xmltype datatype? If so, how?
b). If I cannot do "a.)", then what must I do ensure that the clob gets converted correctly to xmltype and inserted into the table?

Take a look at html entity codes: http://www.w3schools.com/tags/ref_entities.asp.
You can use this:
insert into t values (xmltype('<test>'||dbms_xmlgen.convert('this is a test &')||'deg;</test>'));
or
insert into t values (xmltype('<test>'||dbms_xmlgen.convert('this is a test &')||'#176;</test>'));
see this: ° (& deg;) or this: ° (& #176;)
SQL*Plus will not display degree character. But this is valid enitity code, and when you generate HTML out of this, it should be displayed properly in web browser.
HTML is in fact XML, that is validated by specific DTD (Document Type Definition).

in CC 2014 i used to be able to turn them off for a little performance boost. Now the pallet just keeps them on regardless of my settings. Bug?
