Renamed home folder but now can't see time machine backups

Per instructions from Apple forum , i renamed my home folder from Home to <myname>.  In so doing, the home folder did not get renamed on my time machine backups backed up over time capsule.  How do I either rename my home folders on my backups or "connect" my new account name to my old account name backups?

Pondini has some instructions for inheriting old backups.
See B5 and B6 here.
http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
In the end.. you might find nothing works.. and directly altering the TM backup is really not going to work.. so you may end up needing to do a wipe and restart with a fresh clean backup.
You need to realise you have made a major change to the system.. and the backup is not going to work, if the home folder name is changed. What it probably will do is backup the new home folder in the next incremental backup.. so you will still have both your old and new names.. this is correct btw.. you cannot make that sort of change and have the TM forget the old name.

  • Mac with new drive/system can't see Time Machine backup.

The drive on my wife's MacBook Air went bad and we got it replaced at the Apple Store. She started the Air, went to restore her files from her Time Machine/Time Capsule backup and her backup was not listed.
Then we tried again and the migration assistant says 'connection failed.'
I checked the volume from my Mac and the 'sparsebundle' is on the Time Capsule.
    Any ideas?

This is a guess, but I'd try mounting that "sparsebundle" before you launch Migration Assistant.
If that doesn't help, check item #19 of Time Machine FAQ.

My iPhone 5 screen is completely black.  I can hear it working (you can hear Siri if you push the home key) but I can't see anything.  I've tried a hard reset but that hasn't worked.  Any other ideas?  I have a call in to get a replacement but it won't come in until next week so until then I don't have a working phone!

Reset, hold both Home and Power buttons until the iPhone restarts. This usually takes about 10 seconds of holding both buttons.

The best thing to do would be to start over. Use Setup Assistant this time.
Boot into Recovery, launch Disk Utility, and erase the startup volume. This operation will destroy all data on the volume. Quit Disk Utility and install OS X. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade, so make a note of those before you begin.
When you reboot, you'll be prompted to go through the initial setup process. That’s when you transfer the data from one of your backups. For a walkthrough, see here:
    Using Setup Assistant
Don't transfer the Guest account, if it was enabled on the old system.
Note: You need an always-on Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection to the Internet to use Recovery. It won’t work with USB or PPPoE modems, or with proxy servers, or with networks that require a certificate for authentication.

  • Can I reconnect Time Machine backup after drive swap on OS X 10.6?

    Hi,
I swapped my MacMini's HD few days ago (previous one was dying, had hardware issues). I used CCC and replaced with a hybrid drive. So far, so good. However, when I plugged back the external USB drive were I keep my Time Machine backups, it is not being recognized, TM wants to run a new full set.
I did some research and discovered that TM may use the HD or machine's UUID and that's why it's triggering the new FULL.
I also found this article by Pondini (which seems to be a guru on the topic, lol ):
    http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20090213071015789
But attrb is not working, I guess such command it's not available on 10.6.8 ? ...
How can I reconnect Time Machine backups to the new HD? Or ... I simply cannot and I will have to delete and run a FULL set? I would prefer to keep my old backups, if possible, but it seems that with my OSX version that's not possible without workarounds.
    Thanks in advance,

    ** EDIT **
The trick did not work :-(
I entered into TM and while I can see the old backups , I can't select them or do anything with them. Clearly, they have not been identified as previous backups, hence the reason for Today's FULL.
Ohh boy ... I'm about to give up ...

  • Can't copy Time Machine backups to new hard drive

The external HD with the Time Machine files is unusable (it can't be written to). Disk Utilities reports missing/damaged nodes and recommends copying all files to a new volume and erasing the HD. I got a brand new HD and began copying the contents. I was able to transfer all the regular files but when I tried to copy the Time Machine files, I got this message: "The backup can't be copied because the backiup volume doesn't have ownership enabled."
I want to use the new HD as the TM volume and continue with the same sequence of backups. How can I enable the ownership soI can copy the files?
    Thanks

    You can't.
Time Machine backups use a complex structure; everything is intricately linked together. If that structure is damaged, as yours is, they can't be copied successfully.
If you have a copy of +Disk Warrior+ or another heavy-duty 3rd-party disk repair app, it's possible it can repair the backups. DW is about $100, and probably a good investment for the future, but there's no guarantee it can fix the backups.
And it's not a good idea to mix other data with your backups. See #3 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).

  • TS3274 I have downloaded the latest version of Itunes to my laptop, but now can't see my iPad and iPhone in iTunes.  any ideas?

Can anyone give me advice about the question above.  I have downloaded ios7, have downloded latest iTunes and now can't see devices in iTunes.  Using Windows 8 (horrible), which just jumps me into questions about pictures

Are you saying that when you connect your iPad to your computer an application starts on your computer to download photos? This is how you copy photos from your Camera Roll on your iPad to your computer. You may have the photo capture application to run automatically when a camera is connected to your computer. Your iPad is recognized as a camera and this is normal behavior depending on the settings on your computer.
You can either change the settings to not have the image capture application run automatically or you can just quit that application manually. You might want to copy the photos to your computer first so as to have a backup of the photos.
If you quit the image capture application you can then run iTunes. I suggest, in iTunes that you use the View menu to View Sidebar. Your iPad will then appear in the left sidebar of iTunes. Select your iPad in the left Sidebar of iTunes and then you will be ps enter with a row of tabs allowing various choices.

  • Had to reformat my imac but now can't access time capsule to get my old fil

I had to reformat my imac, running snow leopard. Got it reinstalled. I'm reading my time capsule volume but it has problems connecting to allow me to restore my old settings files, (photos, music etc)
I'm not sure if I'm tackling this correctly. I'm using Migration Assistant, should I be going through Time Machine? I tried both but am having issues. My airport setting are fine. Any ideas anyone?

Thanks for the feedback and the link to the help page.
I had to reformat because my imac was not responding at all. It would open but super slow. In disc utilities I tried reparing disc multiple times, kept getting a message saying the disc was corrupted something about sibling error???, back up all your files, erase and restore.
I've been running snow leopard and have had a time capsule for a while so I erased and spent the next two days trying to reinstall OSX unsuccessfully. Called the apple tech support, tried their idea of reinstalling snow leopard after an erase. It would not install.
Took my computer into the genius bar and they were able to reinstall immediately. We tried a direct ethernet connect to my time capsule at the genius bar but it would not work. It didn't see any time machine volume. The time capsule was flahing yellow. When I hook it to my router it is solid green, gives me a "connecting message" but doesn't open.
anyway so now I bring the imac back home and it won't connect to time machine. Will try from my disc to restore from time machine and will hook up with ethernet again, see if it works.
I feel I'm missing a step when I connect direct with the ethernet but have a flashign yellow light on time capsule. Any ideas on that.
    thanks again

  • New hard drive on iMac but can't use time machine backup

I just installed a new hard drive on my 2007 iMac but it will not let me back up to a time machine backup.  I can see the files i want but has the red circle with this message  :The folder “Documents” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents.  help!

You haven't gone about this the right way. After installing OS X, when you booted from the new drive, you were prompted to transfer data from a Time Machine backup, among other options. That's what you should have done. The simplest, but not the fastest, way to recover is to start over by erasing the startup volume and installing again.

  • Lion can't see Time Machine drive that Snow Leopard does

We just set up a backup system for our group. It's a 8 Tb Pegasus drive attached to a Mac Mini Server. I have set up 4 Macs running Snow Leopard with no problems at all. Two systems are running Lion and I can not get Time Machine to see the backup drive. We are connecting via AFP on a network.
    Any ideas or remedies? Thanks!

If I'm understanding correctly, your 4 SL machines work fine with the drive. Your Lion machines do not seem to able to see the drive in TM.
But your Mini server is a Lion server correct? It can browse and backup to the Pegasus on its own right?
The link Linc cited is related to an issue with older storage devices that use legacy AFP and no longer work properly with Lion machines. Even if the legacy is enabled you can only browse the drive and can set the drive for TM, but will not be allowed to use it for TM (TM errors will say as much). But this Promise Pegasus? is a brand new Thunderbolt using product entirely which subsequently makes me think that can't be the case at all.
    Random thoughts:
How about LAN traffic firewall? Any chance you have the AFP port blocked internally?
I briefly flipped through a manual on the Pegasus... and it doesn't even offer any hints on time machine or shared usage. I guess there isn't anything particular on the disk side to do besides plug it in and the disk arrangements.
OS side... buggy sharepoint setups? TM usage is a selectable function for any particular sharepoint. I'm not sure how you are setting it, but have you tried to create a sharepoint on the Pegasus (a folder stored on it and not the root) and share it out with TM allowed? You should be able to see that at least.

  • One client can't see Time Machine Server

The environment consists of an Xserve running 10.5.6 with all updates. There is a share set up as a Time Machine backup share point. All of the clients, with the exception of one, can "see" the Time Machine share point when they open up Time Machine to set it up, and the backups have been going great. The one remaining client cannot see the share point and hence can't back up.
    Any ideas?
    Steve

We are having the same problem with our Xserve (10.5.6, all updates installed). I am trying to set up a network share that our users can back up to using Time Machine, but the network share doesn't appear. I suspect that it has something to do with Bonjour and our separate ip subnets. We're a University campus, so we have many subnets - the server will run on a 20.x subnet and the clients will (mostly) be on a 60.x subnet. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what can be done?
