Renamed playlist folder contains zero songs on iPod

After I rename a playlist folder in iTunes, the first sync with the iPod gives me a folder with zero songs in it. The folder with the old name is gone (as expected) and the folder with the new name is present (as expected), but it is empty. No playlists, no songs. If I eject the iPod and then sync it again the renamed folder appears to populate OK.
Has anyone else seen this? Any better workaround other than planning to sync twice after a rename?
iTunes Version 7.4.3.1; iPod Classic 160gb, Version 1.02 PC

I just picked up a 160 gb classic last night and experienced this same thing this morning. I renamed my folders in order to get my playlists sorted how I like them (it doesn't sort the same as in iTunes ), and then on the way into work this morning I went to play a playlist and they were gone. Guess I'll resynch at home tonight and they'll all be in there.
I had a heck of a time with synching at first, because it wanted me to register every time I plugged in the ipod (even though I succesfully completed registration). Once that was done, it synchs fine. I held off getting the classic right away, since I read about a few issues that have since been cleared up. Looks like there are a few minor things left to fix, but on the whole I like it so far.
Anyways, hopefully a better fix than resynching twice will come...

  • My playlists wont play in order on ipod playlist. why?

My playlists wont play on my touch in the same order as they show on the touch playlist scheme. Why? & ive gone onto ituned & clicked on orderofplay!

With iTunes 8.x you have the option to tell iTunes to treat any audio file as an audiobook. Simply select the tracks, *Get Info.*, then on the options tab set *Media kind* to Audiobook. You can also set options to *Remember playback position* and *Skip when shuffling*.
Assuming, however, that the books consist of more than one file you may have problems if you plan to listen to them on an iPod. The Audiobooks feature was originally designed for books that have been stitched up into a single file and hasn't been updated to reflect the changes that make multi-track audiobooks easy to work with in iTunes. There are tools for creating iPod-friendly audiobooks for which Aldo on Audiobooks is probably the best reference. Personally I don't bother with the extra effort and just have an "Audiobooks" playlist folder containing sub-folders for each author and within these playlists for each audiobook. Although I still mark the files as Audiobooks to keep them out of my main music section when it comes to the iPod I ignore its Audiobooks options and use my own playlists for access.

  • Cannot add purchased songs to iPod

I am about ready to throw my Macbook out the window. I detest the new makeover on iTunes making me feel like a complete idiot that I cannot figure out for the life of me how to transfer one stinking song that I purchased on iTunes to my iPod Touch. I have confirmed the song is in my music library, I have synced my Ipod several times. I appreciate any help on this!

My problem is similar but broader.  At some point a few months ago, I could no longer listen to any of my purchased music on my iPod Touch.  All of the purchased music remained in my iPod music library (I can still see every song); however, none of my purchased music will play.  When my playlist reaches a purchased song, the iPod stops playing.  I've re-synced my iPod many times and the same thing occurs.  And, I've restored my iPod with the same end result.
One other issue that I believe may be related: I'm also noticing that some of my playlists don't show up on my iPod anymore.  All of this seems to have occurred at the same time.  And I still have 22 GB of capacity available so that isn't the issue.  Can anyone offer a solution?  I would really appreciate it.

  • Is there any way to play all songs in a playlist folder on an iPod/iPhone?

iTunes allows you to play all songs from a specific playlist folder, but so far I haven't figured out a way to do that on my iPhone (4s, 32gb). Is there a way?

I agree that it seems crazy that this can't be done on an iPhone.
Here is the best work around I have found so far.
(It's much quicker and easier to do than to describe.)
In outline, you make an elementary Automator patch
that uses your playlist folder to create a hard coded playlist on iTunes
then just sync across to your iPhone.
1/ Run Automator on your Mac.
2/ In the Automator library select 'Music'.
3/ Under Actions for 'Music' select "Get specified iTunes items" and drag this into the workflow area.
4/ Using the  "Get specified iTunes items" widget  in the workflow area, press the "add" button.
5/ This allows you to choose from a menu that will include your playlist folder.
6/ Now under Actions for Music select "Add songs to playlist" and drag this into the workflow area
so that the results of the first widget will feed into it.
7/ In the  "Add songs to playlist" widget choose "New playlist". Then enter any name for your new playlist.
8/ Run the patch (takes a fraction of a second).
9/ Sync generated playlist to iphone.
    Job done.

  • HT203167 I was trying to create a playlist to add to a second ipod I have and save my library of my other ipod and hopefully transfer between the two or organize additional playlist between the two.  What I did was erase both and and back at point zero. l

I was trying to create a playlist to add to a second ipod I have and save my library of my other ipod and hopefully transfer between the two or organize additional playlist between the two.  What I did was erase both and and back at point zero. lost everything.  Tried to follow directions but I'm too stupid. Used the 'New play list" wrong i think and I know where original files are but no directions as to get it back.  Its supposed to be a simple function of ipod bet not so!

An iTunes playlist can only contain songs that are in the same iTunes library as the playlist.  There is neither a manual nor a scripted way to create an iTunes playlist that contains songs that are not in the library.
So, to do what you want, you would need to create a single consolidated library with all the music, and then create playlists off of that.  Since your current drive is "chock a block full," the best way to do this will be to spend $50-$100 and get an external hard drive for iTunes.

  • Playlist folder "no songs"

While viewing playlist folders in iPod Touch, the top level playlist folders show "no songs' in the summary line immediately below the folder name. In my setup these are container folders only, i.e., "70s" contains smart playlists for 1970, 1971, 1972, etc. These smart playlists within show the actual summary content as "123 songs, 456 min". I would have thought that the summary line under each successively higher tree folder would contain the summary of itself and all sibling folders. Is there a setting that needs tweaking?
Also, how does one Play All in a parent folder?

You can right-click (or control-click) on any song and choose "Add to Playlist". Or you can go to the View menu and select "Show Sidebar" which will make iTunes 11 look much as it did in earlier versions.
    Regards.

  • "Songs on iPod 'jerm' cannot be updated because all of the playlists..."

I recently bought a 1GB iPod Nano from a dude on craigslist and I updated it once, but when I try to update it now a message comes up that reads:
"Songs on iPod 'jerm' cannot be updated because all of the playlists selected for updating no longer exist."
Also, when I updated it yesterday, it said that the iPod didn't have room for all of the songs on my iTunes...but I only have like 75 regular-length songs on there and the 1GB is supposed to hold 240. Anyone know what's up with that?
After it informed me of this last thing, it made me a playlist of a "selection" of songs from the iTunes and updated it with those.
I deleted that playlist today...may that be related to my first question?
All of this doesn't make sense. Can anyone shed a little light on the subject?
    Thanks
    Sony VAIO   Windows XP

I had this problem with my 4GB iPod nano and I tried everything that you said to try. I did accidentally delete the iPod Selection playlist and I tried to make a new smart playlist. When I did this I got an error message that said "The smart playlist contains one or more conditions which are empty of conflict with one another. This will result in never matching any item. Are you sure you want to save this playlist?" I tried to upload an old library onto my iTunes and it was successful, however, my iPod would still not sync. Do you know what i can do to fix this?
    thank you.

  • Transferred itunes library from Windows XP PC to new Windows 7 PC. plugged in 3rd gen Ipod. Ipod icon appears along with playlists, music etc. Songs are grayed out and won't play. Please help!

I recently transferred itunes library from windows XP PC to new Windows 7 PC. The transfer was successful, however when I plug my 3rd gen Ipod Nano into the new PC, the Ipod icon appears along with the music, playlists, etc. The songs are shown but are 'grayed out' and wont play or sync. The 'Devices & Printers' window in new PC shows icon for Ipod driver & is OK. The icon for the Ipod appears but depicts a delta shaped warning icon that states that the Ipod is'not operating properly'. Tried troubleshooting. The troubleshooting message states the the Ipod is 'disconnecting'. Can you help me with this problem?

Then, I dropped the entire itunes file from the old PC (XP) into an empty external drive.
That "itunes file from the old PC"?  Is that the iTunes folder, from the old PC, that was in the user home folder's Music folder?
All of the library, playlists, etc. from the ipod as they always have been are shown, by they are 'grayed out' and will not open or play.
That's on the iPod, correct?  Are all of your old playlists in iTunes, from the old PC, still there in iTunes on the new PC?  Are the songs in iTunes still playable?
This document provides the steps to transfer a complete iTunes library between two computers.  See the section called External drive.
iTunes: How to move your music to a new computer - Apple Support
There are many steps, but this is a summary.  (1) On the old PC, consolidate all of your iTunes data into the iTunes folder.  (2) Copy this iTunes folder to the external drive.  (3) On the new PC (that has iTunes installed but NOT running), replace its existing iTunes folder with the one from the old PC (on the external drive).  When you run iTunes, it uses the iTunes folder from the old PC, and it should look like iTunes on the old PC (with all the playlists, ratings, play count, etc.), and your iPod will see the iTunes library as the same iTunes library (because it is the same library).
If you did something different, and the old PC is still accessible, you may want to try it using the method from the linked document.

  • Delete songs from a playlist folder?

I am trying to delete some songs from a playlist folder. Songs won't delete from any folder, regardless of whether i am in itunes 10 or the newly installed itunes 12. The delete function is greyed out. In playlists, yeah I can delete songs. But in folders, no deletion capability. What am I doing wrong?
    thx
    John

A playlist folder shows the union of all of the tracks in its component playlists and/or playlist folders. To remove a track from a playlist folder it must be removed from any contained playlist where it appears.

  • My Ipod Touch can't create a Playlist Folder in My Itunes

Anyone managed to create Playlist folder in you Ipod Touch to combine all similar Genres into 1 folder? Now my I-Touch is already having huge playlist because I can't organize it. Please Help. Thanks.

Because not all MP3s are having all this information. Another thing is, the default view of Ipod is the list of all playlists, it is very easy if you will organize all the songs base on the Artist Name (using folder) and put all your albums inside the folder. Or Folder by Genre -> inside is Folder by Artists -> and inside is By Albums. Thanks.

  • How do i copy an ipod playlist into itunes- the songs are already in my library

how do i copy an ipod playlist into itunes- the songs are already in my library

I found out an easy way....
With iPod connected to iTunes, right click on the iPod playlist you want to export, choose the Export option on the menu that appears.
iTunes will prompt for a location and format to save the file.  Save playlist as an XML file using whatever name and location you want (I saved as "songs.XML" to my desktop).
Then, in iTunes, go to File - Library - Import Playlist and selet the XML file.  The playlist will be created in the iTunes library and will contain any tracks that are refereced in the original playlist that already exists in the library.
There may be a mesage, "Some of the songs in the (filename).XML were not imported because they could not be fund".  This is because the songs you are importing have to already be in your iTunes library.
I just did this with my kid's iPod and it worked great.  I found this tip on Apple Support Communities (discussions.apple.com/thread/2577582?start=0&tstart=0).  It was posted by SpyglassSally and my original search question in Goole was was, "How do i copy a playlist from an iPod to iTunes".
Thanks for the responses and I hope this helps anyone else.

    See this user tip.
The iPod cannot be updated because one or more playlists no longer exist.
For versions of iTunes from 7 onwards, the option to "update selected playlists" is now under the "music" tab in the summary screen.

  • An older style Ipod has over 10,000 songs on it.  The original computer that contained these songs on itunes has since been replaced.  Can itunes/match get the songs from this ipod to store in match and then put on new computer/itunes?

Can this new service of itunes/match allow you to retrieve songs from an older style ipod, store them in match, and then download them onto a new computer/itunes?  The original computer that contained these songs has since been replaced b/c it broke down.  There were alot of songs on there and now I can't get the songs onto my new computer.  Can match work from ipod > match > computer?

Only if it is an iPod touch that you can turn on iTunes Match.
The original computer that contained these songs has since been replaced b/c it broke down.
Did you make a backup of all the  important files on this computer before it broke down?
    Try this -> http://www.yamipod.com/main/modules/home/
Then backup your computer after you recover the items.
