Renaming attachments before forwarding them

I am a new owner of a Mac mini finding my way around the Apple operating system after years of using Windows PCs. Have managed to get to grips with most things but this one is puzzling me:
My wife has been sent an e-mail from a colleague containing an attachment. She can open and read the attachment ok (it's a .docx document) but wishes to rename it before saving it and/or forwarding it on to other recipients. However, when we try to change the file name we get repeated messages that it cannot be renamed as "permission has been denied".
Surely we are allowed to name documents whatever we choose to fit in with whatever filing or archiving preferences we have? The original name given to this document by the person who sent it to us won't mean anything to us once it's amongst hundreds of others and we're trying to retrieve it.
Thanks in anticipation of your help...

Tampering with an attachment's name gets into the guts of how Apple stores email attachments, etc.  You should not go there.
Instead, the way to do this is to save the attachment.  In Apple's mail, if you look toward the upper right, you should see a "Save" button.
Once you save it, the file with the attachment's name will be saved to your Downloads folder.  There you can indeed change its name.  Simply click on the existing name (to the left of the .DOCX part, if you want to keep that) and you'll see the file's name will become writeable.  Change it and use that in the future.
To restate somewhat differently, email attachments are kept in Apple's library and are not intended for us to meddle with.  That way, when you delete the message, the attachments will be correctly associated and deleted as well.  But first you would download the attachment, then it's properties are under your purview.

  • Rename attachments when saving them all

    Hello,
    I'm currently migrating from entourage to Mail.app and I was wondering if it is possible to rename attachments when saving them. I know this is possible when you save each attachments separately but when you chose 'save all', you can only select a location for all attachments and not rename them separately, like in Entourage.
    Does someone know a trick to achieve this?
    Thanks,
    Stikkos

    Hi Stikkos, and a warm welcome to the forums!

  • Strip out attachments before forwarding emails

    I am looking for a solution to strip out attachments before forwarding emails to a specific domain in exchange 2010 .is there a specific hub transport rule that can fulfill my requirement . Please suggest ?
    Aditya Mediratta

    Hi,
    I double-checked the hub transport rule, it doesn’t have the ability to deal with attachments.
    I suggest to use Attachment filtering on Edge Transport servers.

  • Survey, Do you rename files before bringing them into Aperture.

    I'm curious the percentage of us that rename the original files (so we don't have a bunch of images named something like _ACH0001) before final import into Aperture. This includes either editing them then renaming them outside of Aperture and bringing the edited images into Aperture, or bringing them into Aperture, editing them, renaming the kept versions, exporting the masters with the new version name and finally re-importing them back into Aperture.
    So the question is:
    Do you rename the original files before bringing them into Aperture?
    My answer is a definite...
    Yes

    Since this thread has generated some interesting discussion, let me add some further clarification on our approach:
    1) We use a standard file naming convention NNNddddddssss, where "NNN" = photographer's initials (we need to track multiple photographers); "dddddd" = a unique alpha-numeric date code that will handle any date from 1/1/1850 to the foreseeable future; and "ssss" is a unique image sequence number.
    2) This file naming convention was established long before Aperture was released, supporting a multi-photographer, multi-camera, Photoshop-based workflow. It was also designed to handle scanned images in addition to camera generated images, as we will be scanning and cataloging many historical family images (some copies of original photos over 100 years old) over the next few years.
    3) Since our large base of image files would be converted to Aperture with this naming scheme in place, it made sense to keep this file naming scheme for new files.
    Granted, we could just use this scheme for assigning Aperture version names, without worrying about the underlying file name. However, it is more consistent, for our uses, to use the file naming process and ingestion workflow we used pre-Aperture. And the approach has the added advantage that it doesn't matter whether we use image name or version name in our Aperture views. (It seems the default sort order for new projects/albums/etc. is image name, a bit annoying actually given the focus of Aperture on versions.)
    So whether one uses just version names, or version names and renamed image names, the really important thing is to design and use an open-ended naming scheme that can handle multiple uses, and multiple image sources, on the front end of any digital asset management strategy -- whether that asset management is done in Aperture, in Bridge, or in a cataloging application like iView Media Pro.

  • How can I view attachments without opening them?

    I would like to "quickview" attachments before opening them. Is there a way to do this? I am running TB 24.4.0. My OS is Mac OS 10.9.2. Thanks.

    You can't. If you want to 'view' an attachment, you'll have to open it, regardless whether that's 'quick' or not.

  • I receive and e-mail with attachments but when I forward them, the attachments are smaller. how to fix this?

    I receive e-mails with attachments, but when I forward them the attachments are reduced in size.  What do I need to do to have them forwarded the same size as I received them?

    If the attachments are photos, when you forward them, look on the bottom right of your compose window, change to "actual size".  It's probably set to small as displayed here:

  • Can view attachments but can't forward them

    *Pls advise me how can I forward my emails with attachments.I can view my mails with attachments but when I forward them, my friends only receive most of mails w/o attachments.I am using Iphone4 IOS 4.I have tried my hotmail,gmail & yahoo accounts but facing same problem.*

    I've never done it so all I can do is see what the User Guide says:
    Forward a message Open a message and tap , then tap Forward.
    Add one or more email addresses, type your
    message, then tap Send.
    When you forward a message, you can include the
    files or images attached to the original message.
    IF I'm reading this right, it looks like forwarding attachments is an optional action, not a default. Let me try it.
    OK, it worked for me on my iPad. On my iMac I created a message with an attachment in my ISP account and sent it to an AOL account. I then read the message on my iPad after which I forwarded it to my Moble Me account. I then used my iMac to log into MobileMe and the message was there with the attachment.
    Here are the steps I took on my iPad: After tapping on the forwarding icon, a drop down appeared asking me if I wanted to include the attachment. I said yes and then sent off the message. Is that what you did? My iPad has iOS 4.2.1 on it.

  • Receiver mail Adapter Rename Attachments

    Hi Experts,
    In an Proxy --> XI --> Mail scenario, how do I configure the Mail Receiver Adapter to rename attachments?
    There is a PDF file and a DOC file that the Proxy is sendign to PI and I can see them in the payload with filenames file1.pdf and file2.doc
    How do I configure the Mail receiver adapter to send them as attachments retaining the same filenames? Can I atleast assign any other name to the files?
    Any method other than writing own Adapter Module?
    Regards,
    Shobhit

    Hi Shobhit
    If the attachment name is not dynamic (like timestamp) etc then you can use MessageTransformBean to change the attachment name at Mail adapter level.
    Transform.ContentDisposition attachment;filename ="yourfilename.extension"
    Transform.ContentDescription  attachment name
    Transform.ContentType  your type like text/plain or application/pdf.
    If you are using Mail package then you can  set the attachment name from mapping itself.(here even Timestamp and Dynamic values work)
    Thanks
    Gaurav

  • How can I delete addresses in a received email before forwarding?

    I want to clean up a message before forwarding it to someone on my iPad.  Cannot find out hoe to delete sections of received email before sending on.  Read a double tap would give me a delete option but it does not.  So much for buying books.  Also have never figured out how to delete a saved photo from iPad either.  Anybody out there know how?

    You have 2 options, 1: tap and hold on the first word of the message and select-drag or select all the text you want and copy it, then start a new mail message and tap into the body of the mail and paste, or 2: tap forward, and in the new mail message tap on any of the recipients you want to delete and back space/ delete, and the same goes for the text; tap and hold on the first word and select-drag-backspace/delete the text.

  • How can i recover my photos from iMessage on my macbook pro after i forward them to myself?

    I wanted to save some pictures from an iMessage Convo i had on my macbook and to save them i forwarded them to myself to my iPhone, all the sudden the convo disappears with the pictures i wanted to save. Is there a way for me to go back so i can get the rest of the pictures? I try to bring back the convo by typing the persons name but nothing pops up.

    With the amount of information you've provided it's impossible to offer a potential solution.  We can't see your computer so we need to know the details of your problem and setup, i.e.:
    what version of iPhoto are you using?
    what system version are you running?
    what do you see when iPhoto opens?
    what fixes have you tried?
    where is your library located?
    did you apply any updates or upgrades just prior to the problem occurring?
    are you running a "managed" or "referenced" library?
    what type of Mac?
    how much free space on your boot drive?
    how did you do the backups?

  • I need to reduce the size of several pdf files before transferring them onto a research database. Each file is made up of 100 images (pages of diaries)

    I need to reduce the size of several pdf files before transferring them onto a research database. Each file is made up of 100 images (pages of diaries) & is up to 1.36 GB in size. I have tried reducing file size in preview but the images are unreadable. Any ideas?

    WHen I want to reduce the file size, I either use "Optimize Scanned PDF", or more often use "Reduce File Size". Both are on the Document menu. The Reduce File Size selection has some limited customization that is used, when selected.

  • How to get the total record in the block before save them

    Hello,
    I need to recalculate the amout for all records in one block before saving them.
    How can I get it?
    Thanks for your helping

    You write a loop, something like this:
    Go_block('B1');
    If not form_success then
      Raise Form_Trigger_failure;
    End if;
    First_Record;
    If not form_success then
      Raise Form_Trigger_failure;
    End if;
    Loop
      If :system.record_status in('CHANGED','INSERT') then
        -- modify the record here--
      End if;
      Exit when :System.Last_Record = 'TRUE';
      Next_Record;
    End Loop;
    First_Record;But be very careful-- If your block can fetch a large number of rows, (over 100), this loop can take a long time, and you should not use this method. The loop will continue fetching more rows from the database until all rows satisfying the query are retrieved.

  • I can't make attachments or edit them when using hotmail. it works ok when using explorer on my laptop.

    I can't insert attachments or edit them from previous mails when I am in hotmail. The insert bar remains passive. My hotmail works fine using explorer.

    The Yahoo! Toolbar and the Babylon extension have been reported to cause that problem. They seem to invisibly extend downward over the top of the web page display area. Disable or uninstall those add-ons.
