Renaming AVI-Files

Hi,
I am running OS X 10.8.1 and after renaming an AVI-File, QuickTime Player can't open that file any more. But QuickTime Player actually was able to open that file before renaming and is able again to open it after re-renaming it back to the original title. With Snowleopard & Lion that was never a problem.
The exact error message says: 'The document "whatever.avi" could not be opened. The file may be damaged or may not be a movie file that is compatible with QuickTime Player.'
By the way: I am a 100% sure I renamed the file correctly, I did not omit or change the .avi suffix etc. And it's not because of the file, I already tried other files.
Can you help me?
Thank you!

Hello,
I'm having the same problem here on OS X 10.8.1
This happens with AVI-files and WMV-files. I'm thinking it's a problem with quicktime codec extensions (i'm using divx for mac and flip4mac). I've upgraded them to the latest version, tried uninstalling and reinstalling them again with no improvement.
Then i've found something curious:
when copying the affected files to a usb-stick (FAT) i can rename them freely on the stick and they keep working even after copying them back! However, this doesn't work if the external drive has the Mac OS X Extended Journaled-format.
So, MAYBE there's a bug with quicktime using 3rd party codecs on Mac OS X Extended Journaled drives...
Can you recreate this behavior?

  • Rename recorded avi file with new file name

    Dear all,
I'm working on capturing video from a web-cam and storing files which use the time stamps as the file names. As my application must start storing the data as quick as possible, so I need to start the realized processor, create/open the datasink in advance, otherwise there will be a 10 sec time lag. In creating the datasink, I set the medialocator pointed to a temp file:TEMP.avi
I store the files in the same TEMP.avi for each recording and I want to rename the TEMP.avi using the time stamp as the file name.
I've tried the setOutputLocator() and tried to set the output as 2003_11_02_183023.avi, but it only work once, the next record still use the previous name.
I've tried the renameto(), but it doesn't work.
I've also tried the renameFile(), but it prompt "non static .. can not be referenced to static content".
Are there any way to solve this problem ? It seems to be a simple file renaming problem, but ..
    Thanks in Advance !
    kan

    byte[] aviData = ...; // data from TEMP.AVI
    File file = new File(timestamp);
    FileOutputStream out = new FileOutputStream(file);
    out.write(aviData);
    out.flush();
    out.close();

  • Batch rename of avi files

I am looking for the solution to batch rename multiple avi files simply.
In iphoto, I just select a bunch of image files and using the ctrl+Shift+CMD keyboard shortcut, I input the name something like 'boat_trip_kids' I get the files renamed instantly wiith or without the suffix of a number.
Thing is,  how to do for vdo files ?
I read a totorial and then tried using automator to do this but I have to input the name_of_the_file in the script construction. That's ok for hundreds of files but I will have many names to use for naming of small groups of files and this won't be practical.
Is there some way I can achieve this in automator ?
Perhaps someone with expertise with automator can talk me through the way?
    Thx,

Check out A Better Finder Rename. I don't know if this will do what you want but I thought I'd suggest it anyhow.

Try installing Perian or VLC. Some AVIs require a codec which simply isn't available for Mac OS X.

  • AVI File Captured in Premiere Elements 8 Only Plays First Few Minutes

    Hello folks,
I'm totally new to this.  My problem: I've recently installed Premiere Elements 8 and used it to capture some mini DV video tapes (via firewire), without any significant problems (other than a few freezes).  Now I've tried to capture some VHSC tapes via my TV card (Avermedia H727). The capture process went well (except that the preview screen was just a fuzzy mess!) but I had to plug the audio inputs into my sound card (onboard) rather than the TV card.
The caputred files are about 6 + Gb for a 30 minute tape but when playing the captured video back in PrE8 only the first few minutes is available (the length of playback seems to vary unpredictably (1 tape allowed 3 minutes of playback, another a bit less).   The full avi files can be played back in Roxio or Windows Media Player etc but not PrE8.
Interestingly, videos captured from VHSC via the same TV card in Roxio 2010 Pro will play back correctly and fully in PrE8.   I had to switch audio inputs to the TV card (rather than the soundcard) for the audio to be captured with Roxio.
My son has tried to help me with this (having some experience on PrE2) but he's also drawn a blank with this.
I'd be very grateful for any help that you might be able to give as I've not found anything in FAQ although it's not easy to succintly define my search for this problem.
    Many thanks

Graphics     ATI Radeon HD 4300/4500 series
All updates for Windows 7 and PrE8 installed

    Thanks John:
My PC has 2 HDDs and both are of the “green” variety.  Both are partitioned (2 partitions on each HDD) with operating systems on the first partition (Windows 7 Pro 64 bit on one and Windows XP Pro -32 bit on the other, the operating systems are on different physical drives).
The tips relating to PrPro are hard to follow as they are quite technical and I’m not even sure which ones also relate to PrE8.   It would take me an age to try to wade through this lot.
My point is that my current setup (for all its imperfections) will capture video (via the TV card) using PrE8 as the capture software.  The setup must be adequate for this task as the complete avi file is played back correctly on Roxio and Windows Media Player but PrE8 fails to recognise any video after the first 3 minutes (approx).
If I capture to PrE8 using a firewire connection from my mini DV video camera then the capture proceeds normally (apart from odd freezes) and the captured video is all playable in PrE8.
When capturing using the mini DV camera, I select "DV camcorder" in the “Get Media” menu. However, this only supports Firewire or USB sources.   When capturing from the VHSC tapes via the TV card I have to select “Webcam or WDM Device” as the media source (I’m not convinced that this is the most suitable capture mode but it’s the only one I can find that doesn’t look for either a firewire or USB device.
It seems as though PrE8 must be putting some code onto the captured video that prevents more of it from playing back because avi files recorded on Roxio will playback fully.   I've tried to copy the PrE8 avi files into a different folder (devoid of any PrE8 project files) and then renaming the file before importing into PrE8 but still only the first few minutes will play.   My thinking here was that perhaps one of the other associated project files that PrE8 creates might be the source of the corrupt info.
Many thanks for your interest and taking the trouble to respond.

  • Can't embed .avi file

I am currently using RoboHelp HTML 6 and am having problems
with some video files I'm linking to. I'm using the hyperlink tool
and selecting multimedia for what I'm linking to. The videos are
.avi files. When I create the link and then generate my Help, the
links don't work, but if I just view them from the RoboHelp View
Selected Item function, the movie opens and plays fine when I click
    the link.
I tried some troubleshooting of my own before pestering all
    of you kind folks, and:
Thinking it might be a path length issue (had that before), I
moved the project up a level to shorten the path, regenerated and
checked the links - no luck.
Thinking RH might be objecting to the spaces in the .avi file
names, I renamed all of them with NO spaces in the file names,
redid the links, regenerated, and checked the links - no luck.
I've added videos to projects in the past, but with RH X5.
What am I missing? I just know it's going to end up being one of
    those "Duh" moments...

Thanks for the suggestion - I put the files in the Baggage
Files folder, relinked to the videos again, and still no luck.

  • In authorware .avi files are jumping (when paused) to one frame ahead on mouseover.

    Dear All,
I had prepared the CBT in a Authorware application (version 7.02) and published it.
The .avi files are playing well in my system (OS=Win XP) and same CBT file in some of the Win XP systems it is not playing well.
i,e. when the movie is playing and I click on the pause button the movie.avi is paused, but the real problem is persisting when I bring my cursor on the different navigation buttons (mouseover) then the movie is jumping to one (1) frame, and if I scroll the text samething is happening the movie is heading forward one frame ahead. But when I click on Play button the movie is playing from the place where it has been paused.
I tried to check in the Virtual Machine and the CBT is working fine, whereas in the upgraded WinXP systems the CBT is giving the problems.
I tried to resolve the problem along with System Administrator (they were saying that the Authorware Software need to give some patch files.)
Please HELP me out with the patch files I need to upload along with the CBT system.
As I tried to copy all the xtra's into the XTRA folder but still the problem persists.
Please let me know what to do.
    Thanks and Regards
    Ravi Rao G.

There are no patches for Authorware that will change the way video plays. As far as I know there are no patches for Authorware beyond 7.0.2. You have the most current version. You could try renaming the file to .wmv which will change the extension that would be used from a7vfw32.xmo to a7wmp32.xmo. The a7vfw32 is used for avi files but a7wmp32.xmo uses the Windows Media Player in the background to run the file. If this doesn't work are you able to try different movie formats?

  • OSX cant open *some* .dmg and .avi files, other open fine

    Hi,
Ive encountered a problem with opening files on my new iMac.
The problem is some .DMG files and .AVI files are not able to be opened, which have previously been fine. Where as some where fine, and still are. The problem files have white icons and are grey'ed out. They cannot be renamed, deleted and moved. These files have previously been fine, I downloaded them, installed or watched them, then stored them on my portable hard drive. They have just suddenly became un-usable.
Its weird how 90% of the AVI and DMG files I have open fine, but some have just suddenly became un-usable. If I go to delete the files, it states they are being used by another application. If I go to change the default opening program from VLC to Quick Time it states I don't have the correct privileges.
    Whats going on here?

Yeah I've done that many times. Doesn't seem to make a difference. Don't know what to do now. The problem files seem to be files that I have transferred to the portable hdd since I've had my iMac.
The drive is formatted in NTFS but I followed a tutorial on how to get read and write access. Could it be that osx can't write the files to the drive correctly? I'm not sure. It's weird because the files work perfect for a day or two after copying, but then become un-usable.

  • Help with AVI files on Desktop!!

I have two AVI files on the desktop that I want to put into imoive to edit them, but imovie won't import them. I tried by going to the import movie under file but they are both grayed out. THen I tried to rename them, but still they were grayed out. Please someone help!!!

I have two AVI files on the desktop that I want to put into imoive to edit them, but imovie won't import them.
iMovie '08 will only import files which it can edit. If audio and/or video compression format is not editable, then it will not import. For instance, many AVI files use DVI ADPCM compressed audio with M-JPEG video. In this case the audio is not compatible but the video is so the file will not import. In such a case you would have two options. The first is to change the audio, keep the video an import the modified file. The easier option would be to use a conversion application like QT Pro ($30), GarageBand (included in iLife), MPEG Streamclip (free), FFmpegX (donation-ware), Visual Hb (pay-ware) or a similar application to convert both audio and video to iMovie '08 compatible files for import. In most cases, even iMovie HD (free download for iLife users) will convert AVI files as part of the import process.

  • QT won't open .avi files...

I just made a knew thread before but I couldn't edit it. Maybe it was .avi files and not .div files QT couldn't open. I changed it by mistake and couldn't remember which it was. Anyway, can someone help me with what codecs I need?
    Thanks!

AVI is just a container. A bucket or a box that carries things.
You could have a bucket of water or a bucket of strawberries (or a bucket of blood if your are a pirate). But it's just a container.
Video uses compressions schemes to fit the data into a file. Video uses compressor de-compressors (codecs) to achieve that goal.
Not all codecs (thousands of them) are available to the software you are using to open and display (decode = decompress) them and, since there are so many, there is no way you can open just any file with just one player.
On the Internet there are 4 major players (viewers):
    QuickTime (Apple Computer)
    WMP (Microsoft)
    Real (Real Player)
    Flash Video (Adobe, previously Macromedia)
You nearly always have to fall back on one of these players to view video media.
Real Player can view most QuickTime created content but QuickTime can't even open Real Media formats (.rm).
QuickTime Player can view some (but not the newer) Flash Media format (.swf) and Flash can import most QuickTime formats and convert them.
QuickTime, via Flip4Mac, can now view most WMP formats but WMP can't open most QuickTime file formats.
Confused? There are even more issues in play!
Codecs are "software" based. What is written for a PC won't work on a Mac and vice versa so their developers need to write new versions for each OS.
As newer codecs are developed older ones are obsoleted and drop out of use. It may take an older machine to play the file. Many codecs are "proprietary" and only allow viewing using their software or third party "converters" to make them work without them.
Last chance with QuickTime trying to play your AVI file (a container that Microsoft tried to kill of years ago). Open the file with QuickTime Player and then open the Movie Info (renamed Inspector in version 7.2). This info window should show what codec was used to make the file even though QuickTime may not be able to display it.
A Google search for codec name +Mac may help you find the version used in your AVI. Be sure to install a version compatible to your machine.

  • Why PE7 crashes after loading faulty avi file

Hi - Problem on this Vista Home Premium system and PE7 occurred after loading a faulty avi file. Now every time a new project is started a blank icon appears where the files usually reside. Just clicking on this icon causes a white flash, the screen changes to white and the program is being crashed. This occurs even after two clean reinstall of PE7. So I figure this faulty file resides somewhere in one of the program files but cannot figure where and why it is picked up on a brand new project causing the program to be unusable until restored to it's original state. I use PE7 along with PSE6. Everything was working fine until this happened. Any ideas why ?
    Thanks for your help.
    Phil

I'm sorry, Phil. I'm still not sure how your whole system got corrupted, even if your AVI was bad. But, if you were capturing AVIs from a Canon HV in DV Lock mode, I don't see how even the AVI was bad! So something odd is going on that must run deeper than just a corrupt file.
Assuming there's nothing out of the ordinary that you're not telling me (like that you're editing on a second or external drive or that you're working on a home-built system), I'm rather stumped.
Try holding down the Ctrl+Alt+Shift keys on the left side of your keyboard as you launch the program. This often clears corruptions in the program.
You can also go to C:/DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS/ALL USERS/APPLICATION DATA/ADOBE/PREMIERE ELEMENTS and delete -- or just rename -- the 7.0 folder. In case this, too, has corrupted, the program will recreate it.
Meantime, you say you've reinstalled the program. You can try uninstalling the program then deleting the C/PROGRAM FILES/ADOBE/PREMIERE ELEMENTS 7.0 completely -- just to ensure the program is completely removed. Then reinstall it clean.
As I've said, version 7 is a pretty stable build. Corruptions and problems with it are rare. I assume you maintain your computer, keep the operating system up and date and regularly defrag your drive(s) and run a virus scanner.
The FAQs to the right of this forum detail my regular maintenance regimen. I also walk you through it in my books.
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/390602?tstart=30
You do want to eliminate every possible cause. Sorry. I know that's no fun.

  • Renaming specific files

I've just recovered a shed-load of *.avi files from my SD card, but they've all been renamed 'file1.avi' thru 'file600.avi'
I've also spent a LOT of time going through them to make sure they are in sequence and found their original name.
I've now got an Excel speadsheet with the current and original names, and what I'd like to do is write a script to change them back, rather than do it manually.
Surely this is an ideal job for Applescript?  I'm kind of guessing (as these files are in one folder and there are no duplicate filenames) it should be a simple case Finder to locate a file in the list, look for it's alias, and rename it.
    Thanks in advance.

OK, so what I've ended up with, is this...
    set the_text to "file1.avi    REC_2014_09_23_11_04_31_S.avi
    file2.avi    REC_2014_09_19_10_57_50_S.avi
    file3.avi    REC_2014_09_23_11_05_31_S.avi
    file429.avi    REC_2014_09_23_11_01_31_S.avi
    file430.avi    REC_2014_09_23_11_02_31_S.avi
    file431.avi    REC_2014_09_23_11_03_31_S.avi"
repeat with this_paragraph in paragraphs of the_text
set old_name to items 1 thru ((offset of tab in paragraph) + 1) of this_paragraph as string
set new_name to items ((offset of tab in paragraph) - 1) thru -1 of this_paragraph as string
        tell application "Finder"
set name of file old_name of window 1 to new_name
        end tell
    end repeat
...with a carriage return at the end of each line in the set command.  Should these be replaced with tabs?
Also, I take it the_text txt file isn't relevant for the script?
    Thanks for you patience.

  • Quicklook no longer working with AVi files in 10.7

    Howdy,
Mysteries abound!  Updated to 10.7, and ever since, I have been having two problems:
    1.  AVI files no longer open open using QuickLook; all I get is is the AVI icon, and the "Open in VLC" button.
    2.  The icon preview for AVI files is no longer displayed as well; only the generic VLC icon shows (and yes, I have the "Show icon preview" box cheeked in the Finder preferences).
Is anyone else having the same problem?  Does anyone know how to remedy this?  Thanks in advance! (^_^)

Flip4Mac (installed) and Perian (installed) provide this support. As a matter of fact, I can play AVI and WMV in Quicktime 10.2 and 7.6.6. It's the Finder or the QuickLook subsystem what has a problem.
Besides that, having those QuickTime components installed, there are no problems in a new installation from scratch in a nother disk. But I'm trying to avoid that and to restore in Mountain Lion part of the functionality of my Mac under Snow Leopard.
There should be a preference, cache, temp file or something like that that is impeding QuickTime or the Finder to access the necessary components to preview and quicklook AVI and WMV files.
