Renaming clips - annoying behavior!!

This is one of those things that is super small but extremely annoying - at least to me. The "return" key and the "enter" key on the numeric pad function differently- when I rename a clip and press "return" it goes to the next clip and wants me to rename it. But if I press "enter" on the numeric pad then the clip is renamed and it doesn't go to the next one. But for me, it makes so much more sense that these would be reversed. Is there a way to swap their functions so that each key does what the other key does?

This is the importance of LOG AND CAPTURE.
First off, don't capture a full tape and name it AWJune_15_2006_tape2. In fact, I think that is a HORRIBLE way to name a tape. WAY too long. I keep mine under 6 characters. This is due to the OLD method of needing to export EDLs, and them having a 6 character limit, but I really like it. For example, on the current show I am working on...Andrew Jackson...I name the tapes AJ001, AJ002...all the way up to AJ102. AJ for ANDREW JACKSON, and 001 for the tape number. 3 spaces because I never know how many tapes I will have.
Second...the logging and capturing part. Don't capture the large chunks and give it all one name. This can cause HUGE issues if you ever media manage the project. You'll end up with 2 to 100 clips called AWJune_15_2006_tape2-1, AWJune_15_2006_tape2-2, AWJune_15_2006_tape2-3...and so on. Messy. No, instead, go thru the tapes and break them up by what you see. By the subject matter...like "British firing cannons," "Tennessee Militia firing guns," Jackson riding horse." And so on.
One exception I have to this is interview tapes. I will capture those as full tapes, and call them "HW Brands-INTVW 1" and so on. Still with the same tape naming scheme...AJ005.
LOG and CAPTURE...I cannot stress this enough.

  • TS5376 iTunes once again won't close. Past versions of iTunes had the most annoying behavior that when ever closed it would immediately reopen. Apple update just installed the latest version and the problem is back. Help.

Past versions of iTunes for Windows had the annoying behavior that it couldn't be closed. If I tried to exit or close the window iTunes would just open back up again. It had gone away, but apple just installed version 11.1.5.5 and it's back! The only way to exit is to open task manager and kill the process. Nothing else seems to work. Guess what Apple, I really don't want to have iTunes open all the time. I think the only answer is to stop using iTunes, since I don't have any Apple devices anyway, and go with a different music player on my PC.

    Thanks.
Just in case, we'd better check on another old potential culprit (don't see it reported much lately, though) ... do you have any Logitech gaming software installed on the PC?
If so, perhaps try the suggestion from the following post:

  • Moving and renaming clips in the Project Window is EXTREMELY slow, but the rest of the program is fine?! PPro CS6

    I have Win7 Pro X64 with  Core i7 and 32GB RAM...
When I'm editing and doing other things, adding FX etc, the program works fine BUT when I do ANYTHING in the Program Window i.e. renaming clips, moving clips, etc the program acts as if it's bogged down... I can't for the life of me figure this one out...
    I don't have a large number of clips/footage items
    I've cleaned the cache
What else could be causing this? When I say slow, I mean a good 10 seconds before the program responds to anything I've done, and when renaming clips, I always have to do it twice because the first time it doesn't "take"
    Thanks all for any help!
    Aza

It occurs with or without clips in a sequence... the problem isn't the sequences, the problem ONLY occurs in the Project Panel, every other panel is as fast as my machine will allow (very fast) only the PROJECT Panel is EXTREMELY slow when moving clips into folders, etc
ALSO, all my drives and preferences are set up the same in every project, only THIS project is moving slowly... I even divided the project up into 4 separate projects to cut down on the number of clips in each project, and it still moves slow... almost as if something has carried over to each project, or something

  • Exporting renamed clips from Prelude to PP CC

I'm using Prelude to rename clips for me.  But when I send them to Premiere Pro I don't always get the full clip - I only get partial clips.
When I do a direct import through media browser in PP, the entire clips is there.
Am I missing an export setting in Prelude?
    Any suggestions would be helpful.
    Thanks.

    Kevin Monahan ...
Lucid George is right ... select one trimmed clip, File->Export->Media, you can choose whether in-out or entire clip.
Select MORE than one clip, you get a completely different export box ...
These two selections were "exported" from that bin created by dragging the trimmed clips from the timeline to a new bin ... I don't know what else one is supposed to do. You can't even select multiples clips and batch sub-clipping, which would at least cut the steps down.

  • After many years using PP I just discovered I can rename clips in my timeline...But!

Yes and I find it most convenient wondering why I did not think of it or try it before. But...That's where it seems to stop. as there seem to be no other reference of this renamed clip. So as helpful as it could be in a project to rename clips according to certain needs, is there a point to it if it can't be connected to anything else like it's original file or at least the one in the project window...?

I just thought after all that I only have to add the "rename" to its present original name so it will keep it for later needs! I already do this in my media folders but forgot about doing here. That's a bonus remembering the day file names were restricted in length!
    Thank again

  • Assigning shortcut to "Rename Clip" function?

    Hey
Do you know how to assign a shortcut to the "Rename Clip" function? Not in the Event Browser, but when I have my footage on the Timeline, I would like to rename it to its specific function - which is possible by right clicking and choosing "Rename Clip" - but it would be a lot nicer, if I could assign a shortcut command to this.
But when I go to Final Cut Pro -> Commands -> Customize and open the Shortcut Customizer window, I am not able to find "Rename Clip" - which means I can't assign a keyboard shortcut to it... Do anyone know what to do?

Nope, it is not an available command to customize.  Would be nice, though.

  • How to fix this annoying behavior???

Ok, firstly here is my setup. I have two HD's in the PC. One is a SATA 80g (ubuntu) and the other is a IDE ATA 20g (arch)HD. I boot which ever HD by pressing 'esc' when the computer loads, to get a menu from the bios. I then select which ever drive I want to use as the primary drive, this drive then boots. Works fine, I can boot into arch or ubuntu within seconds of restarting the machine.
But, as it seems this has its problems. First annoying behavior, I made a mistake in my menu.lst file so when I rebooted I had a kernel panic. At first I was surprised and didn't get the problem, so I booted into ubuntu. From there I mounted the IDE ATA (arch) device and went to the arch directory /boot/grub/menu.lst, rick clicked and viewed it with sudo gedit. Up pops the ubuntu menu.lst. HUH???? So after getting frustrated here I decided to try the arch fallback option on boot...
So I reboot the pc and 'esc' to select primary drive this time choosing the arch linux HD. It boots as normal and I get the option for fallback, I select this option and the arch linux kernel loads and then the rest starts to happen and all of a sudden I see ubuntu pTTy or something like that. HUH??? ubuntu tty while I am trying to boot into arch??? wtf is going on...
The one thing that I think contributes to the whole mess is how arch sees my IDE ATA drive as /dev/sda. I thought sda was only for sata devices and if so then this is how I suspect the problem is happening. Whats the deal with arch seeing my IDE drive as sata drive????

perfect, thank you. I was wondering why ubuntu had a UUID to access the HD, now I know why.

  • Renamed clips gone after upgrade

I renamed clips in Premiere 2014 on a mac.  I moved the project over to a PC, had to upgrade. imported the project and all the clips are back to the camera naming convention.  Any help?

Are you running another instance of nm-applet elsewhere? For instance, if you're using two X servers to run two environments simultaneously, nm-applet will only want to appear in one at a time. Thus, close the nm-applet open in the other env., open it in the env you want, and everything should be great and fine.

  • Changing clip name behavior for duplicate clips

Suppose I have one duplicate clip that I have copied into two bins, like so:
    -- Sunday's clips bin
              - clip_name_one
    and
    -- Flowers bin
              - clip_name_one
If I change the name of one, I expect it to change the name of the other also, since it is the same clip, just placed in two different places (not two separate files).  Instead it only changes in one place, like so:
    -- Sunday's clips bin
              - clip_name_one
    and
    -- Flowers bin
              - clip_name_one_tulip
Is this intentional behavior? I can't imagine how confusing this will be for logging when I make duplicates in multiple places for organizational purposes. I may even end up with the same clip with multiple names. The same is true for the metadata associated with the clip - if I add a comment in the comment field, it does not propogate. Markers, however, DO propogate to both, which is exactly as I would expect. Why not the metadata?
Is there a way around this (short of never duplicating clips)?

I agree, Premiere Pro is a bit weird in what it does and doesn't carry across duplicate clips. For instance, you can interpret the frame rate for a duplicate different than the other version of it. But if you go to timecode and enter a changed start timecode it effects both instances. I get why you would want to sync both name and metadata, but I also see benefits to not syncing it. Either way, I agree the option should be there. There also should be an option like fcp7 has, to rename a clip based on file name, or rename a file name based on clip name (but there isn't).
That said, instead of creating duplicates of the clip in different organizational bins, you could create custom metadata columns. Therefore creating sort of a virtual bin.
You could do that by going to the top right of the project panel and clicking on the little down arrow. Then go to metadata display (while in list view). Then you can click on Add Property in the Premiere Pro Project Metadata area. Then you could do a custom property, decide whether you want integer, real, text or boolean. You'd probably want text. So you could choose text and name it Flower. Then you could hit ok. Go back to list view, and type in flower
Then in your project panel search box, type in flower and find all clips using it. A work around for sure, but may achieve what you want.
P.S. It would be much better if you could create a boolean field and just search by the word flower and everything checked would come up in the search. Unfortunately the search is a bit stupid when it comes to this. So if you search flower with a bloolean field, nothing will come up! You have to search true or false, and then ANY checked box will show. Quite dumb! Definite feature request!

  • Splitting and renaming clips in FCE4

How can I split a clip up into smaller clips and rename then? Whenever I try to copy or duplicate them I get the same copy for all. I was trying to change the name as well and it seems I can't make them independent of each other. Does anyone know how to do this?

Read through pp. 68-69 of the manual (aka the help file) "Copying and deleting items in the Browser". And pp. 943-950, "Working with Master and Affiliate Clips."
You can cut up a single clip into as many parts as you want. You can do this in the Viewer by setting IN and OUT points or on the Timeline by using the Razor tool. To rename the subclips created this way you have to make each of them an Independent Clip. ( *Make Independent Clip* or *Modify > Make Sequence Clips Independent*.) But read up on it before you do this, as you may create even more headaches for yourself if you're not careful when you do this.

  • After renaming clips, where can I find the original name?

    Hi
Sorry, I asked this before but got an answer more about custom naming. So...
After importing my dslr clips with their uninformative date and time names, I often rename them so I can tell what's on them. But sometimes I want to know the original name which doesn't seem to be in the 'Info' panel anymore since I renamed it. I can 'Reveal in Finder' which will show the original clip but you'd think FCPX, since it keeps track of the clip, must have the name squirreled away somwhars. Anybody know?

    elmer

    Thanks for the reply.
I don't get where you mean. I see where to apply a custom name, I'm saying, after I've changed the name either in the Browser or Info panel, I don't see where the original name is and I'm asking where I can still find the original name in FCPX.
I know I can "reveal in Finder' to see the original clip with its name but there must be another way in FCPX itself.

  • Renaming Clips within Timeline

I'm trying to export clips from FCP to AE. Because of this I have to rename each individual clip that I export just to keep track. However, the clip on the timeline still has its original clip name from the original. When I try to rename the clip to match the export name, all the clips chunks belonging to that one long clip gets renamed too.
How do I rename just the individual clip without changing the original file name?
    Thanks.

You can't. Unless you get Automatic Duck Pro Export for After Effects. www.automaticduck.com

  • Batch rename clips in my bin

I have a 30min clip on the timeline and when I find a shot I like, I use my blade tool to cut an in/out. I then drag this cut clip to video layer 2, which is where all my clips will be that will be used in my project.
Then I create a new bin and drag all these shots from video layer 2, to this bin. The problem I’m having is now have to click on each individual clip and rename them manually.
Is there any way I can select all the clips within the bin and lets say auto batch rename the selected clips.
I know I can solve this by placing the clip in the viewer and setting an in/out marker and then make a subclip, however I really like scrubbing through my footage on the timeline because I can view my clip in the filmstrip mode which i'm use to and love cutting my footage this way.
Please tell me this is possible!

So let's come to the point that you explain WHY to batch rename, and what the names will look like.
Do you want to have them numbered?
With my suggested workflow that will be, because if you skip the line where I suggested to type a name, then all subclips will be numbered sequentially.
I understand that's not what you want, but it can be a starter for a workaround, because I think what you are looking for doesn't exist yet. (unless you use batch export, which has the ability to change and add pre- and suffixes; then import; but that will cost time and diskspace).
I'm curious to hear the idea behind your workflow.

edit: Sorry if I seem eager to have you use my workflow-idea. I'm not. I'm just curious what problems you have with it.

  • Any way to change this annoying behavior of Web Dynpro?

When debugging a web dynpro app it always launches the web dynpro app in the last browser window you accessed.
This is different from how debugging behaves with a normal J2EE app. In that case NWDS launches the app in a brand new browser window.
This is extremely annoying and inconvenient. For example, I work remotely a lot and do a lot of meetings over webex-type software. So when I'm showing someone what I'm doing the debugger will automatically "take over" my webex window instead of launching in a separate window.
Is there any way to change this behavior to force each debug session to open in a brand new browser window?
Thanks in advance for any help.
    David.

    Hai,
    You can do one thing.
If you wan to deploy ur application.
Open a browser window--Deploy new archive and Run.
Dont close the browser, when you wan to deploy it agian,
    simple righclick on project--create archive.
    simple righclick on project--Deploy.
    refersh the earlier browser.

  • Rename Clips, Safely

Hi, I need to rename a still photograph which has been imported into a sequence. I assume that once I change the name in the finder, the clip will go off-line. Then, do I tell the program don't look for xyz.jpeg, look for lmnop.jpeg? What's the best and safest way to rename a clip?
    Thanks!

Yes! Read here for more information:
    http://monicabriano.com/2010/04/27/how-to-reconnect-media-in-final-cut/
You'll need to uncheck the box labeled "Matched Name and Reel Only" when reconnecting.
