Renaming Clips within Timeline

I'm trying to export clips from FCP to AE. Because of this I have to rename each individual clip that I export just to keep track. However, the clip on the timeline still has its original clip name from the original. When I try to rename the clip to match the export name, all the clips chunks belonging to that one long clip gets renamed too.
How do I rename just the individual clip without changing the original file name?
Thanks.

You can't. Unless you get Automatic Duck Pro Export for After Effects. www.automaticduck.com

  • How to locate clip within timeline containing specific filter

    Hi,
I would like to locate in my timeline all the clips that contain a specific filter (in this particular occasion, MERCALI filter). But my timeline contains hundreds of clips. How do I locate the ones I am looking for without having to click on each and everyone of the cut clips?
    Thank you.

That just isn't something that anyone asked for. Or not enough people, in any case.
We have asked for a way to eliminate all filters.
After Effects has a hotkey to show all modified parameters, so Premiere Pro could certainly have it. Put in a feature request.

  • After many years using PP I just discovered I can rename clips in my timeline...But!

Yes and I find it most convenient wondering why I did not think of it or try it before. But...That's where it seems to stop. as there seem to be no other reference of this renamed clip. So as helpful as it could be in a project to rename clips according to certain needs, is there a point to it if it can't be connected to anything else like it's original file or at least the one in the project window...?

I just thought after all that I only have to add the "rename" to its present original name so it will keep it for later needs! I already do this in my media folders but forgot about doing here. That's a bonus remembering the day file names were restricted in length!
    Thank again

  • Batch rename clips in my bin

I have a 30min clip on the timeline and when I find a shot I like, I use my blade tool to cut an in/out. I then drag this cut clip to video layer 2, which is where all my clips will be that will be used in my project.
Then I create a new bin and drag all these shots from video layer 2, to this bin. The problem I’m having is now have to click on each individual clip and rename them manually.
Is there any way I can select all the clips within the bin and lets say auto batch rename the selected clips.
I know I can solve this by placing the clip in the viewer and setting an in/out marker and then make a subclip, however I really like scrubbing through my footage on the timeline because I can view my clip in the filmstrip mode which i'm use to and love cutting my footage this way.
Please tell me this is possible!

So let's come to the point that you explain WHY to batch rename, and what the names will look like.
Do you want to have them numbered?
With my suggested workflow that will be, because if you skip the line where I suggested to type a name, then all subclips will be numbered sequentially.
I understand that's not what you want, but it can be a starter for a workaround, because I think what you are looking for doesn't exist yet. (unless you use batch export, which has the ability to change and add pre- and suffixes; then import; but that will cost time and diskspace).
I'm curious to hear the idea behind your workflow.

edit: Sorry if I seem eager to have you use my workflow-idea. I'm not. I'm just curious what problems you have with it.

  • Can no longer pull clip into timeline from Viewer??

I no longer have the ability to drag a clip, or sub clip if I've chosen in and out points, into the timeline from the Viewer.
When I attempt to do this the clip moves as if I'm repositioning the clip within the Viewer window, but does not move to the timeline.....thoughts??
    Thnx,
    Bh

Either the video track that you are trying to edit on is locked (dark grey diagonal lines thru the track)
or the source and destination patch buttons are disconnected.
The Illustration below shows the v1 source correctly connected to the V1 destination:

  • Can`t left click and drag clip into timeline..Need advice

Can`t left click and drag clip into timeline, or drag clips around in timeline.
Can insert into timeline from Source Window but can't drag from source window.
Can cut and paste within timeline.
Restarting cs5 doesn`t help, but restarting computer solves problem for a while.
Tried many mouses, but that didn`t help.
Have no idea how I got the name OLD PRO, must have been drinking champagne years ago, because I am a bumbler par excellence!

Thank you so much for asking
In the Project Panel a left click highlights the asset but ignores the drag.
In the timeline, a left click highlights the panel and when I try to drag it gives a flicker but that's all.
I can cut and paste in the timeline.
A restart of CS5 has no effect. Restarting the computer solves the problem for a while.
    Four different mouses--same problem.

  • Exporting renamed clips from Prelude to PP CC

I'm using Prelude to rename clips for me.  But when I send them to Premiere Pro I don't always get the full clip - I only get partial clips.
When I do a direct import through media browser in PP, the entire clips is there.
Am I missing an export setting in Prelude?
    Any suggestions would be helpful.
    Thanks.

    Kevin Monahan ...
Lucid George is right ... select one trimmed clip, File->Export->Media, you can choose whether in-out or entire clip.
Select MORE than one clip, you get a completely different export box ...
These two selections were "exported" from that bin created by dragging the trimmed clips from the timeline to a new bin ... I don't know what else one is supposed to do. You can't even select multiples clips and batch sub-clipping, which would at least cut the steps down.

  • Accessing document class function within timeline

Hi have a very simple question,
(Bear with me I'm still quite new to as3 and some of my terminology may not be solid)
I want to access a function that is within my document class when a movie clip on the timeline has played to a specific point (being the end).
I have already been able to call another function from the document class at the top/root level (it is called to initialize all clips and buttons when you click on the "enter" button on the splash screen.
Problem is that I cannot call another function (in the document class) from a movie clip within a movie clip on the timeline. Is there an easy way to do this? I have considered writing a separate class for the movie clip and then adding it onto the movie clip (using the property panel). I don't really want to do it this way because I am already using a base class on that movie clip and 3 others that use a set of generic functions.

    >>I want to access a function that is within my document class when a  movie clip on the timeline has played to a specific point (being the  end).
Your document class should add a listener to the clip and the clip should dispatch an event when it's complete. You could dispatch your own event or use one of Flash's like Event.COMPLETE. Something like:
    in clip
    dispatchEvent(new Event(Event.COMPLETE));
    and in your doc class
    clipOnTimeline.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, classMethod);
    >>I have already been able to call another function  from the document class at the top/root level (it is called to  initialize all clips and buttons when you click on the "enter" button on  the splash screen.
You really should avoid mixing timeline and document class code. Better would be for your doc class to add a listener to the button and call a method within the class when it's clicked.

  • Move clip on timeline with keyboard

    Hi all,
Is there a way to move a clip, either the in our the outpoint to where the playhead is located on the timeline use a single keyboard shortcut?
I essentially want to be able to select a clip, move the playhead to where I want the clip to be, and press a keyboard shortcut to move the clip there
I cannot figure out a way to do this.
    Thanks

In CS6, the shortcut is the 'e' key.  (Extend edit to playhead.)
That does not move the clip to the playhead position...just the edit point extends to it.
Since the edit mode change in CS6...this has becomer my most common way to trim clips within the sequence.
For the O.P..what Richard Knight suggested is a good wotk around.  Cut and Paste.
    Select clip> Ctrl-X > Set Playhead > Crl-V
(It will never be a simple single keyboard shortcut due to track targeting in PPRo and there is now way to select a clip using a KB shortcut. Mouse only)
Possibly the best way though is.
Position your Play head>Select Clip in Sequence with CTRL(insert) or  Alt-(Overlay) Held.  Drag to Program Monitor.
You have to select the clip via mouse and you have to position the playhead anyway...so this is pretty simple.

  • CS5 movie clips in timeline don't auto-play

So I used flash for some relatively extensive movies back in the MX days, but haven't done much with it since. I'm trying to build a relatively simple movie now in the newest version of the software, but I'm having some trouble.
I want to create various smaller movie clips with animations in them, then drop them into the main timeline and have them animate automatically when the playhead hits them. However, when I view the movie (or test it) all I get is the first frame, they don't animate.
Did I set up the document wrong or something, or is this something basic I missed in the newer versions? Is there a better way to structure this?

Theoretically that's how I always thought it's supposed to work, but it isn't... I created a new document (new > actionscript 3.0) to test this out, then a movie clip within it containing a block that moves left to right. Doesn't animate in the main timeline. Do I need to specifically tell the clip to animate on that frame? Seems redundant.

  • Assigning shortcut to "Rename Clip" function?

    Hey
Do you know how to assign a shortcut to the "Rename Clip" function? Not in the Event Browser, but when I have my footage on the Timeline, I would like to rename it to its specific function - which is possible by right clicking and choosing "Rename Clip" - but it would be a lot nicer, if I could assign a shortcut command to this.
But when I go to Final Cut Pro -> Commands -> Customize and open the Shortcut Customizer window, I am not able to find "Rename Clip" - which means I can't assign a keyboard shortcut to it... Do anyone know what to do?

Nope, it is not an available command to customize.  Would be nice, though.

  • IMovie '11 on 10.6.8 greys out contents of library, so I cannot drag and drop clips to timeline.

This has happened on multiple occasions. I don't know why Apple can't figure out how to create a reliable program. I have been using iMovie for several months now, updated to '11 in April, on OSX 10.6.8, and usually it works fine, but occasionally, out of the blue, all of the clips in my library will be greyed out. I cannot edit them in timeline unless I go to each clip individually and open up the separate editing window, I cannot drag and drop the clips to timeline, I have to manually copy and paste, and I cannot see any of the clips unless I roll over them with my mouse. My free trial of Final Cut Pro just expired and I have a couple of videos that are almost finished and this is extremely frustrating. I have seen others with similar experiences and I'm wondering if there is anything at all I can do about it. Thank you.
P.S. I did try restarting the program about 5 times and restarted my computer. Nothing gives.

Of course, I might have found a fix right after posting this. In case someone else comes along with the same issue...
I closed my MBP cover, and re-opened (this solved a menu bar issue I was also having). I re-opened iMovie, and deleted the project I had started that couldn't be continued. I started a new project, and things seemed to work just fine. So I'm not sure what it was that caused the problem, but so far it seems to be working now. Good luck!

  • Can't see clip preview in clip or timeline view

This may be a simple problem, but I am brand new to this. I am making a movie out of photos, and the process seems simple. I drag a photo from my iphoto library (from the photos pane) into the clip view (or timeline). The image is imported and the movie looks correct when played, but in the clip (or timeline) view below all imported clips are just black. So I can't really easily edit the clips because I have no idea which one is which (besides looking at the filename!). The images I am importing are jpegs and like I said it has no problem playing the movie correctly I just see what I am working with in the clip view. Any suggestions?

    Welcome to the forum!
The image is imported and the movie looks correct when played, but in the
clip (or timeline) view below all imported clips are just black.
    Very strange.
To make sure we understand what you see... The imported image plays okay on the timeline after it's imported, but its thumbnail in the timeline is black. Instead of the thumbnail showing the imported image, the thumbnail is black. Correct?
Does the imported clip play black too?
The only thing I can think of that makes a clip play black is when the Ken Burns Effect is set to pan above/below the image or left/right of the image. Then, instead of importing the image, Ken Burns imports the black border along one side of the image.
To unset the pan so Ken Burns is centered over the image, do this:
    1. Click on any image in the iPhoto library.
    2. Turn ON the Ken Burns checkbox.
    3. Click in the "Start" half of the Start/End thingy.
    4. Drag the zoom slider (the slider with the small/large face profile) a bit to the right, then all the way to the left.
    5. Click on the "End" half of the thingy and repeat #4.
Now the import is centered. If the pan was causing the problem, that should fix it.

  • Moving and renaming clips in the Project Window is EXTREMELY slow, but the rest of the program is fine?! PPro CS6

    I have Win7 Pro X64 with  Core i7 and 32GB RAM...
When I'm editing and doing other things, adding FX etc, the program works fine BUT when I do ANYTHING in the Program Window i.e. renaming clips, moving clips, etc the program acts as if it's bogged down... I can't for the life of me figure this one out...
    I don't have a large number of clips/footage items
    I've cleaned the cache
What else could be causing this? When I say slow, I mean a good 10 seconds before the program responds to anything I've done, and when renaming clips, I always have to do it twice because the first time it doesn't "take"
    Thanks all for any help!
    Aza

It occurs with or without clips in a sequence... the problem isn't the sequences, the problem ONLY occurs in the Project Panel, every other panel is as fast as my machine will allow (very fast) only the PROJECT Panel is EXTREMELY slow when moving clips into folders, etc
ALSO, all my drives and preferences are set up the same in every project, only THIS project is moving slowly... I even divided the project up into 4 separate projects to cut down on the number of clips in each project, and it still moves slow... almost as if something has carried over to each project, or something

  • Drag & drop audio clip from timeline to project window ?

i no longer can drag a clip from timeline to the project window & then breakout the clip to mono by selecting clip - audio options- breakout to mono - now when i drop an audio clip from timeline into the project window it does not show up anywhere in the project window - did an update get rid of this function ? it was much better than having to go back to the unedited original source & start from scratch ...

thanx for your time Jim - i understand that would be the preferred method but that was a quick fix until recently i have noticed that i can no longer do it by just grabbing the edited clip & drop it in project window so that i can modify just that portion of the original files properties - it still functions that way on a friends machine - was just kinda weird that i can't get it to work that way any more …
