Renaming Devices In The Finder

I want to rename the Devices (my drives) that I see in the Sidebar of The Finder, but I can't.
I've tried double clicking on them, single click>Return and single click>Enter with no luck.
I've read other posts of people having similar problems renaming files and folders, with the suggestion to force quit the Finder. I tried that without success.
Any suggestions?

I believe most UNIX file systems are case sensitive, that is, it matters whether something is named Foo.txt rather than foo.txt. The "regular" Mac OS in case insensitive, but preserves cases. Thus, you can name something either Foo or foo and the name will be preserved just as you type it. One can run into problems with some things--installing Adobe products for instance--with a case sensitive file system on the startup drive. Personally, I don't use the case sensitive format on my machine. I use plain Mac OS Extended (Journaled), which is an HFS+ file system (hierarchical file system, extended). It is the current default system on a Mac. I'm surprised you didn't get the option for all the flavors of HFS+ (there's four of them). But what you selected should work just fine for data. Oh, and FAT16 is even more primitive than FAT32.

  • HT4759 Is it true that when setting up devices with the find my phone app you must use the same account for ICloud ? If so how do I delete a current account to make it read as the other ICloud accounts?

I'm setting up my devices with the find my phone app. I have accomplished setting up 2 devices. The third I can't setup because I can't change the iCloud account.
My understanding from reading that the iCloud accounts must use the same name on all devices. How do I change that account in my phone settings?

You don't have to use the same iCloud account in order to track all your devices.  You just have to sign into the iCloud account being used on the device you are trying to track in order to track it.  When you sign in on icloud.com and open Find My iPhone, you will see all the devices with Find My iPhone enabled that are using the account you signed in with.  To track a device using a different account, simply sign out, then sign back in using the ID the new device is using.
The Find My iPhone app works the same way.  It will display devices based on the iCloud account you sign in with on the app.  To track a device using a different account, sign out, then sign back in with the iCloud ID that the new device is using.

  • Can't open devices on the Finder's sidebar

I used to able to switch between devices on the Finder's sidebar. Recently I cant do that anymore. Suspected that I might have done something wrong with the setting, could someone help? Thanks.

    Sorry I missed this Charles.
If the sidebar plist isn't getting rebuilt, then there's something else also wrng with your OS install...
Appears to be time for An Archive & Install, which gives you a new OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space...

But first, Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it finishes.

  • TS3376 If you had not registered your device on the find my IPhone app, but you know the serial number of that device, could you still be able to track your device

If you had not registered your device on the find my IPhone app, but you know the serial number of that device, could you still be able to track your device

No, you can only potentially track it if you have Find My iPhone enabled on it, you can't do it via the serial number.
If this isn't hypothetical, then if your iPad has been stolen then you should report it to the police. You should also change your iTunes account password, your email account passwords, and any passwords that you'd stored on websites/emails/notes etc. and contact your carrier.

  • If you have multiple devices on the find my iphone how do you prevent someone from accessing those other devices if your device is stolen

I have set up the find my iphone app to be hooked up to my phone, computer, ipod and my family's devices. Thru the find my iphone app you can delete the hard drive of any device to keep a theif from getting your personal information. But lets say my phone is stolen, is there a way of preventing the person who stolen my phone from being able to delete the information on my computer?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Your device should have it's screenlock enabled so that this can't happen, but if you haven't set a screenlock, then yes someone could do this.

  • Were do i find the ipod device using the find my ipod device ond icoud? it is turned on

lost ipod how do i find it using the find your ipod app in icloud?

Go to htp://www.icloud.com/ log in and click the big Find my Phone icon.
For the iPod to have any chance at being locatable, it will need to powered on, and have an internet connection. As the iPod does not have GPS, the location will only be a general one based on the known location of nearby WiFi networks.

  • How do I rename a device in the Finder window?

I have several computers in the house. When I am sharing the devices on my network, my newest one, a MacBook Air, seems to be named as a MacBook, probably because the transfer method of files from my older MacBook when I set it up ended up keeping the account info, including the name. It's confusing for me to see "Jenny's MacBook" and "Jenny's MacBook (2)" as the names of these two devices. Is there a way to change the name of my MacBook Air to make it unique and frankly, more accurate?

Found the answer after digging a little in the Apple Discussions--use the Sharing Preference window under System Preferences. The device name can be changes there.

  • Can family members added as part of the Family Share feature of iOS 8 really erase other family members devices with the Find My iPhone feature?

I initiated a Chat session with Apple Support to see if this was really possible.  The answer I got was that it DID seem possible at this time.  If this is true, then Apple may want to look at giving the sharing device the option to disallow other family members from erasing that device remotely (or playing sound, entering lost mode).
I would be comfortable allowing my wife to lock my iphone or erase it remotely if needed, but I would not want any of my kids to have that ability.
Can somebody else confirm this could be done?
My case # with Apple is: 668372718

    Good day,
    Ryan

Just tested this.  You have to enter the Apple ID Password for the device you are trying to remote erase.  You CAN put the device in lost mode without the password, but you cannot initiate a remote wipe without the password for the device.

  • Can someone find a iphone after its been "wiped" with the "find me" app?

Im sure this question has been asked time and time again but can someone find a stolen iphone after its been "wiped" with the "find me" app?
this was the first time this has happen to me :-(. i think its sad the lowlifes are going around taking peoples iphones (and other items). Not that any body cares im a student putting myself through school who saved money to buy this phone not even a month ago. i feel so confliced because i question if i shouldve taken that one call and replied to a text msg in the first place.... thank god for insurance but im a broke collage student so it only goes so far but i digress. i am open to any suggestions into what i can do to pervent this happing again. i do know about the find me app.
also im new to this forum thing; normally im just a "reader" of these things. so with that said, could you please post helpful information or thoughts i would greatly appreciate it. I thank you in advance!

you should be able to still located your device.  it can be found by using another device with the find me app.  using the phone number should located it.  although, people who steal these devices are usually smart about it.  they will wipe the slate clean on phone and turn off the enable location function and just use it as a ipod touch basically and jail break it.  yes it is sad that people cant keep their hands off of peoples things.  but i would go to your nearest service preovider and let them know what happen.  they will be able to do a location pin point for you if its not too late.  i would do it , like.... tomorrow.  good luck

  • HT201365 How helpful is the find my iPhone app?

How helpful is the find my iPhone app?

The app itself is for locating another iOS device (with the Find my iPhone service set up on it) from the device the app is installed upon.
For that purpose it is very helpful.

  • Problems renaming a shared device (NAS) in Finder.

I have renamed my external NAS server from NAS1 to MyServer.  The NAS device shows the proper name now, however Finder is still showing the server as the old name (NAS1).  How do I change the "Shared" server in Finder to the new name (MyServer).

  • After upgrading to Yosemite I cannot see my other iMac at home (note I am at work) in the Finder window shared devices.  Note my iMac at home is connected to an airport extreme (as is my work iMac) and I can see both airport extreme.

Aftger I upgraded to Yosemite I cannot see my iMac at home from my work (i.e in Finder window under shared devices).  Note both my work and home iMac are connected to time capsules and I can see both of those time capsules but I cannot see either iMac from the other location.  My guess is that the time capsule is blocking the connection to the iMac.  One last comment occasionally (5% of the time) my iMac does magically appear in the shared Finder window but this is extremely rare.  Any help????

Just discovered this one myself.  OK, this may sound silly but place your cursor next to the word "Shared" on the finder sidebar.  The "hidden" command "Show" will magically appear.  Clicking that will display your other network attached devices.
This appears to be a new "feature" that some freaking genius thought was some how "Cool".   My only assumption is that Apple programers expect users to randomly move their cursor around the screen in hopes of finding some critical function like looking for an easter egg in their favorite game.

Obvious question, but have you got 'Find My iPhone' set on both devices?  Settings>iCloud>Find My iPhone.
