Renaming files in Lightroom 3 Upon Import (problems)

I can having trouble importing files into Lightroom name where I want to custom name them - sequentially. I am importing the data from one folder on my hard drive to the folder that contains all of my lightroom files. I am able to import and rename some files in folders with ease. Others I am told Lightroom 3 couldn't name them. Why? If I try to import and rename in LR2 I have no problems. I am basically taking a Nikon generated file, say DSC0001.NEF and renaming it to Ireland 07-30-08.NEF. Lightroom 3 can't do it. Does anyone know why? Thanks.

Hi Franz,
Let me clarify a couple things (I hope Adobe is listening):
1. I am merely copying and renaming on import. I am not moving the original files.
2. Files are created in my TO: directory, they just contain the origianl filename.
3. I tried the exact same procedure with LR2 and it works fine.
It appears there may be a bug in the software.

• Lightroom 5 - Import Problems

Hi
I am having trouble importing RAW CR2 files from Canon 5D and 7D into Lightroom.
Some / half of the files will import from the memory card, but at some point in the import process I get an error message that reads "The following files could not be imported because they could not be read" . Then I am unable to import the remaining files at all.
I'm running Lightroom 5 on OSX 10.8.
I have been getting this problem for the past 6 weeks. Usually If I shut down Lightroom, restart computer and begin the imprt process again, this second import will work fine. I put it down as a bug that wasn't a big deal, because after 2 or 3 import attempts everything would be OK.
But now Lightroom won't import my final 130 images at all.
I have read several other threads on this foum, and so far I have
- deleted the Lightrom preference file (it didn't work)
- tried different USB ports, cables and card readers (it didn't work)
- checked my permissions on the destination folder and disk, and confirmed that they are "Read and Write"
I don't think the files are the problem as I have been able to import 400 of the 600 RAW files from the memory card so far.
If anyone has any ideas that would be much apprciated!
Thanks

• Trouble renaming files after a 'small' import error

I mostly photograph people and I name my files with the convention: date-person-photo number. I'm using LR3.3 at the moment.
I recently did 2 shoots in quick succession and made the mistake of naming the second set of photos with the name of the person from the first shoot. I didn't realise my mistake until I'd finished editing the photos. So, for example, I now have photos with several virtual copies and a couple of .tiffs from trips to photoshop but the wrong person's name is attached to them.
(In some ways, it's not a big deal since the client will never see the file names but it will be a nuisance for me later if I have to go searching for these photos...)
I did a small renaming (F2 button) experiment with one photo (1 RAW, 3 virtual copies, and 2 tiffs) and tried renaming it. Lightroom successfully renamed the RAW and the virtual copies but gave the tiffs new file numbers. In other words, photo-1.nef and the virtual copies became NewName-1.nef etc but the photo-1.tiff's became photo-2.tif and photo-3.tif instead of NewName-1-edit.tif and NewName-1-edit-edit.tif. I hope that's clear
Does anyone know a way of renaming my files so that the RAW, virtual copies and the photoshop tiffs retain their file numbers.
Thanks.

Something quite curious just happened, i started without my drivers/utillitys nor steam, started regular programs one by one slowly over time to notice any differnce while doing work and saving every now and then, now at the time i had Teamspeak, Texview 2 (a texture viewer for games), Skype, Nvidea drivers, firefox and adobe updater and CS6 Services.
Now the thing is i was working for around 2 hours with all of this open with no issues, as soon as someone on teamspeak asked me to plug in my headset and talk is buggered out in the time it took to stand up, plug in the headset, sit down, say hi and do a couple of brush strokes, after that i couldn't open a new file, save or use many tools.
My headset is ussaly pluged in most of the time, hence i didn't make hte connection until now when i tried without it.
Unplugging it didn't help at all in solving the issue, it continued on, i assume a restart will probably fix that.
I'm using a Corsair 1500 USB headset and the only keys i hit in photoshop after plugging it in was left click for the brush, shift for a stright stroke and scroll lock (Teamspeak Push to talk key).
I'll do some more checks over the coming day to confim it.

• Why do I get duplicates in lightroom upon import?

I am getting duplicates in LR even though I don't have any in my orignal files? I am importing from a library on my hard drive. Not everything duplicates itself but at least a third. These are JPEGs, I am using Creative Cloud on a PC running WIndows 7 ultimate.

• Renaming Files in Lightroom

My renaming convention in Photoshop has been to use brackets (e.g.,[xxxx]) with custom text within the brackets appended after the original filename. It appears that brackets are illegal characters so far as Lightroom is concerned and a "near" (but unreadable to me <g>) character is inserted in its place. Strangely, however, brackets that have been previously inserted in the file by any other program are readable.

The only workaround that I have come up with is to continue to rename in Bridge 2.0. I must then remove the files from the dataset and reimport them.

Is there a better way to continue my naming convention?

• Organising, editing and renaming files in Lightroom 5

Hi !
I am a new Lightroom 5 user. I recently tried to organise my old photos (which stored in folders on a windows desktop) through Lightroom 5 in separate external HDDs.
What I did was to create a master photo folder in each HDD and then add the subfolders from my desktop. I want to now edit the photos in the Develop Module , rename and save the files in the same location in the subfolders on the external HDDs. But when I try doing that, Lightroom asks me to import. Did I not already import them ?
How can I edit, rename and save the photos ? Please help
Thanks !

How can I edit, rename and save the photos ? Please help
In the Library Module, you select a photo that has already been imported, and click on "Develop", or press D. This allows you to edit your photos.
There is no need to rename or save (in fact, there is no "Save" command) as your edits are saved automatically and are always displayed in Lightroom whenever you launch Lightroom. In general, the only time you would want a copy of the edited photo is to use it for some non_lightroom purpose, like e-mail or web or commercial printer. In that case, you could use the command File->Export... which allows you to save the edited version of your photo in whatever folder you want, and rename the exported photo as well. As I said, you don't export everything as a regular step ... its unnecessary to export everything ... you only export when you need to use the photo outside of Lightroom.

• Lightroom 4 import problem

Recently, when I import photos in a folder into Lightroom 4 it adds the folder under the Macintosh HD hard drive instead of under the parent folder/sub-folder structure in User/Pictures. This happens whether I move the folder at the same time as import or whether I move the folder first and then just import by adding the photos to the catalog from the existing folder structure.
The destination folder should be users/[user name]/pictures/[user name] library. But when I import, it creates a new parent folder with the same path instead of dropping the folder into the existing parent folder.
When I try to move the folder within Lightroom 4 by dragging and dropping to its proper destination a pop up window says a folder already exists - ie the one from which I am trying to import, and it won't let me move the folder as a result.
This is a recent problem. Before everything worked fine. I am running Mac 10.7.5.
Any suggestions much appreciated.

Just a note. I got the Windows updates last night. I was able to import this morning so I don't know if the updates are the problem or not. Is there anything else that you changed on your system?

• How do i keep files from doubling upon import in FCP.

I have an optimized folder that is copying my files when i have the "do not copy" box checked. I have a 2 hr project at about 400 gb... any suggestions. I have the boxes checked that should leave the files where they are and i assumed they made a link like in adobe products to the original file. However my hd space is rapidly decreasing. I can't imagine that the folder should be this large, i am working with four angles in a multi cam edit, would doing a straight edit with no multi cam help? Thanks for any suggestions in advance.

So you created optimized media and proxy files on import. That's going to generate of lot of files, and in the case of optimized media, very large files. You can use the Delete Generated Files function at any time. Only optimize or proxy if you rally need to. If you have problems playing complex multicam clips, and don't have the resources or speed and size to support optimized media, I'd suggest using proxy media instead.

• When is my RAW file changed? Upon import? Upon viewing? Only after edit list started?

All:
I now have a "second copy" made in a separate hard drive when I import files from my camera cards. I want an untouched file for possible comparative "developing" or rendering in DxO or PhotoNinja. Might convert everything to DNG someday.
Asking LR to do this at the top of the Import pane is I assume, creates a copy *and* makes NO changes to the RAW data.
OTOH, Lightroom will offer me the image in Camera Raw to view, create, and interpret my edit/develop decisions. But I have been thinking about this and need to ask all of you: Is that CR2 file in my dated Lightroom database folders a changed file in any way from the RAW file while it was still on the card? The decision to hold edit data in sidecar files plays a part in this, right? External sidecar files means even after edits I can copy the CR2 file and use it in other [RAW]converter's software?
jonathan7007

Being a "non-destructive editor", Lightroom does not (cannot) change your CR2 files....with one exception, which is when/if you choose to edit the capture time of an image, in which case the changed date is written back into the file header's EXIF field. But apart from that, it is never ever changed.....all edits are stored primarily in the catalog's database, and optionally you can have them written into XMP sidecars. Having the XMP sidecar would allow you to open the raw file in another XMP-capable Adobe program, outside Lightroom, and see the edits applied. Not sure if other non-Adobe raw converters would be able to interpret all of that XMP info.
For non-proprietary raw files (e.g. DNG, Tiff), you can also choose to save the XMP data but in this case it would be written directly into the files header, not into sidecar files. The underlying image data is still, however, unchanged.

• Lightroom JPG import problem.

Hi,
I just downloaded the trial version of Lightroom. I have a Nikon D50 and I am using it in the highest JPG quality (or RAW when I shoot for special occasions) in P mode. I do now have about 1500 photos on my hard drive and because I just installed Lightroom, I want to import these to create my library.
The problem I have is the following. Sometimes, I specify the WB to create a warmer photo instead of leaving it on Auto WB. So, when I look on the camera LCD sreen or on the PC using a picture viewer (like FastStone), the photo is great. But when I try to import these pictures in Lightroom, the WB seems to alter and become much warmer. So the imported photo is yellowish and does not reflect what I shooted. Any of you know what is the problem and how can work around?
Note that I did not try to import a lot of photos, so maybe the problem is present on all my photos and not only the ones I specified a non-automatic WB setting on the camera.
I was shooting in JPG because it was more convinient for us at that moment (except for special occasions) but I will now only shoot in RAW because of Lightroom. I just don't want to declare my past photos "waste".
Thanks

Dany-
I won't be able to answer in detail on color management issues in general, but there's some good reading suggested in other threads.

As to what color space you should use for JPEGs as a camera setting- I use aRGB, and convert to sRGB if the pix are going to be shown on the web.

If you migrate to using just RAW, you set the color space on Export- to JPEG, TIFF, PSD, GIF.
As to how it looks on the LCD, I can't tell jack from that, either as to color balance or focus in many cases.

• Converting WAV files to mp3 upon import

I have changed my import settings in itunes preferences to encode incoming wav files to mp3, restarted my computer, but when I import the wav file, it stays a wav file, no matter how I set my preferences. Why can't I make mp3's, or that is how the F**K can I get my computer to do what I'm asking it???
P.S. I still love my mac, but jesus, come on!!!

I have changed my import settings in itunes preferences to encode incoming wav files to mp3, restarted my computer, but when I import the wav file, it stays a wav file, no matter how I set my preferences.
Import will only convert to the selected format when your RIP from CD or select a file already in iTunes then menu Advanced -> Create {import settings} version.
Make sure your Import settings are MP3.
Hold Option, go to iTunes menu Advanced -> Convert selection to MP3, then select the WAV files you want to add to yoru library
This will convert them to MP3 and add them at the same time.

• Can't rename files on an external harddrive,

I import my pictures into Lightroom using the following format YYYYMMDD - XXXX. For example, a picture with a file number 2113 taken on Dec 16th, 2011 would be ranamed 20111216 - 2113. I import them to my computer first and then move them to an external hard drive when the storage on my computer gets tight. For a while, I accidently was adding a space to the front of my file name, so it would import as " 20111216 - 2113" instead of "20111216 - 2113" notice the space at the beginning file name. This space was maintained when the file lived on my computer, but it was removed when I moved the lightroom folder to my external hard drive. As a result, all of the files that are on the external hard drive show up as "missing or deleted." Light room thinks there should be a space in the front, but none of the files on the hard drive do. I have to locate each and every file by hand, and the "find nearby photos" check box doesn't help, because all the files are missing the space. Is there a way to batch rename files in lightroom, even when the file is missing? I need to change all the names in my catalogue to take out the space at the front so I can then easily locate the files on my external hard drive. Can someone help me out? There has to be a better, faster, easier way to do this other than individually locating each and every file on my external hard drive.
Thanks for your help,
matt

Lightroom can't rename files while they're missing. If you batch rename the files on the external hard drive, to include the space again, LR should find them and then you can rename them within LR to remove the space again.

Than LR should have brought in the RAW files as well. ACR is the RAW
processing engine used by LR under the covers so anything not supported by
ACR would not be supported by Lightroom.
Are you shooting RAW plus JPEG? By default, Lightroom will stack then
unless you tell it not to. Check to see if there is a small badge on the
preview that looks like two sheets of paper with a number. That is how
Lightroom indicates a stack. You can unstack them by clicking on the badge.
There is also a menu item to stack/unstack photos. Otherwise, I would have
to research but not sure why Lightroom would ignore the RAW photos but
still import the JPEGS.
