Renaming files in OS X Snow Leopard with illegal chars..
I'm still using Leopard but want to know if the behavior of renaming files is on par of that in, gasp, Windows Vista. I was jsut doing a lot of renaming and it reminded me of the days I used to use Vista when renaming a file and using an 'illegal' character it would pop-up a yellow dialog (not an error window) to remind me of the characters I can use only.
In OS X Leopard 10.5x if I try to use e.g. ":" I get an error box and this then reverts the file back to its original name which erases all of what I had done, all for one char probably. On top of this the error box then gives me a cryptic message as to what the error was about:
"The name "xxxxx" cannot be used.
Try using another name, with fewer characters or no punctuation marks."
I heard that the guys working on OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard tidied everything up, doing all those things they always wanted to do, I bet they didn't get many opportunities like that! And was hoping that they did something toward file rename?
I'd expect that the erroneous char would be highlighted and some kind of error shown, but not to delete everything typed in. Can anybody tell me?

It's a unix thing, and not quite something I'd classify as needing to be cleaned up...
• The only illegal character for file and folder names in Mac OS X is the colon “:”
• File and folder names are not permitted to begin with a dot “.”
• File and folder names may be up to 255 characters in length

Are you using the latest version of Silverkeeper? - v.2.0.2 is stated to be compatible with Snow Leopard.

Just done a replacement of the pata DVD drive (its new and is working ok), and a fresh clean install of Snow Leopard with all updates, iMac 5.1 behaves strange, sometimes I start Google Chrome and look at youtube videos the computer freezes and shuts down immediately,
I believe its related to overheating ?
iStat Pro shows GPU diode temp at 66 C, CPU at 48 C, Fan rpms is around 1000
Any ideas somebody ?
The hard disk has been previously checked with state of the art techniques that have confirmed that the hard disk drive is in perfect condition.1.5-3 minute boot up as opposed to 15-20 seconds

I have restored this
from a time machine partition.
TimeMachine is only a backup and restore, it won't fix issues in software and according to your information, doesn't even optimize the restore for best performance on boot hard drives.

There shouldn't be need to reinstall OS X fresh unless your having file structure issues which if they are should appear when in the Steps, which then a zero erase and install will cure as well as any bad sector issues, the defrag step wouldn't be necessarry on a freshly installed system obviously as the files are written all together, not in portions all over the drive.

when i try to install snow leopard with install disk, it has me restart the computer instead of installing. can anyone help me figure out how to get the disk to actually install?
Ok, it's just a glitch that it's not auto-rebooting from the disk.
Please backup your personal files off the machine to a regualr external drive and disconnect all drives before doing anything
Take the 10.6 disk out and clean and polish the bottom with a very soft clean cloth and a tiny bit of rubbing alcohol to cut the oils.
Stick the disk in and reboot holding c key down, this will make it boot from the disk and you can install Snow Leopard that way. -
I have a 2008 iMac 21.5" using 10.6.8 Snow Leopard with VM Ware 4.1.3 supporting Windows 7. Initially ML OSX refused to install due to Back up on HD which I removed to trash.It then proceeded but froze up in the initial stages with 33 mins remaining. I was lucky enough to quit and restart using 10.6.8. With all the problems on this chat line, it appears it may be best to leave Mountain Lion well alone, and cut losses rather than tempt fate.Has anybody anything positive to say or help with?

2. Open Finder, go to your user's folder > Library > Caches and delete everything
3. Verify disk

How can I do a clean install of Snow Leopard with out losing iLife applications?
I bought my Macbook pro in 2009 and am currently running the Leopard software. I want to do a clean install of Snow Leopard, but I do not want to lose my iLife applications. I lost the DVD's that came with the computer. Is there any way I can do a clean install of Snow Leopard with out losing my iLife applications?
Will a regular installation of Snow Leopard allow the App store to recognize that my computer has iLife and mark it as a purchased item in my account. If it can, then would I be able to do a clean install and re-download the apps for free.
Any help would be appreciated!1. Install Snow Leopard normally; this will keep the applications intact. An actual clean installation involves either erasing the partition or creating a blank one, and neither of those will carry the applications over.
2. The previous iLife installation won't carry over to the Mac App Store, and the Mac App Store versions are incompatible with Snow Leopard.

I have upgraded Snow Leopard with Combo 10.6.8, the supplemental update and fixed permissions, but still can't open app store to upgrade to Mountain Lion. I am on the Cayman Islands. Thanks for the help!
Don't be afraid to bump this topic. There's also an App Store forum where you might repost this question, but give some of these details in your post. I'd rephrase the topic to something like "Can't use App Store to upgrade." (Instead of can't "open".) Then give the details.

Hello, I have an iMac 10.6.8, Snow Leopard with iTunes 11.0.1. When connecting my Bose Sound System via bluetooth the wifi downloadspeed goes from snappy to a crawl, disconnecting the bluetooth connection, the downloadspeed goes up again. Don't have this problems with the Sound System when connecting it to my iPad. I like to mention too, that the downloadspeed of my iPad is always better than of my iMac. Are there any experiences concerning this problem? Thank you in advance.

Apperently the issues lies with GRID VIEW.
Open your Itunes, Click on TV SHOWS, then quickly change your view from GRID VIEW (Defaults to this) to List View and Viola!
We tested it out on the phone just minutes ago, my problem is solved and I suspect if you guys try this yours will be too. -

I have OSX Lion and have been backing up to Time Machine, I now want to do a clean install of Snow Leopard (not from backup), but can I restore my data (iTunes Library, Photo's, files etc.) to Snow Leopard from a Time Machine backup made on OSX Lion?
Thanks.You should be able to restore iTunes and iPhoto files if the Lion system was running the same version of those applications that you'll have on the Snow Leopard system. However, you won't be able to restore files for applications like Mail, Address Book, or Safari, as the versions of those won't match.

You can install Windows on its own drive; you can have Mac OS on same drive or different.
You just can't have Windows OS on a partition that has higher partition number than 4, which includes hidden partitions also.
I keep Windows on its own hard drive. Then do what you want with your 4-5 internal hard drive bays. -
Upgrade from Tiger to Snow Leopard with retail DVD.
Apologies if this has been posted before, but I've not been able to find it when searching.
I'm going to be upgrading an iMac from Tiger to Snow Leopard, using the retail DVD. When I boot from it, it only gives me the option to install, and there's no indication that it will be upgrading rather than installing a new copy.
Can you upgrade Tiger to Snow Leopard with this DVD or would I have to do a clean install? If I can upgrade, is it normal that it isn't telling me it's going to do an upgrade?
Thanks all.The Snow Leopard installer is somewhat optimized for updating an existing system: it uses data gathered from the old system to decide what to install, its network settings to attempt to access an Apple database of incompatible apps to supplement the list on the DVD, & other useful things.
It even does the equivalent of Disk Utility's verify disk step before writing anything to the HD & does the actual upgrade as root user, making permissions issues a moot point.
There is no reason to hesitate to use it in this way. It is greatly improved compared to earlier OS installers. -
Problem with opening .wmv files in QuickTime since Snow Leopard upgrade
Until upgrading to Snow Leopard any .wmv files would open automatically in QT when double clicked.
I now get an error message which says "QuickTime Player must be installed to run this application".
I can open the file by launching QT(pro) and opening it from within the player - kind of a long way round.
Any suggestions what the fix might be would be gratefully received

I have lost my copy of Snow Leopard and can't upgrade. All my backups were performed with that copy that I don't have anymore. The thing is that I had to reformat my iMac restoring to its factory settings and reinstalling Tiger all over again and then Leopard. I have already ordered another copy of Snow Leopard. My question is: By installing a different copy of Snow Leopard on my computer can I still recovering my backups from Time Machine that I had previously done with that other copy of Snow Leopard that I have lost? I hope I am making sense here and that someone could answer this.
