Renaming files questions...
I've got images named "cormorant dsc0104.nef" through dsc0109.nef... Except they aren't cormorant, they're anhinga... So, I need to rename them "anhinga dsc0104.nef" through "anhinga dsc0109.nef". I expect to have to do this one image at a time, but I can't figure out how to do it in Lightroom... In Bridge I just select the filename and change it. In LR I found a "rename photos" but its really non-intuitive, and doesn't seem to have a good way to take text off the front of the filename and replace it with other text of my choosing... Am I missing something?
For this situation I can just go back to Bridge and do the rename 'cause there are only a half dozen images, but is there a way to do this more
efficiently in LR?
Select the images, hit the F2 key, setup the naming template as you wish. Done.
Just consider you'll have to rename the entire name, you can't just alter the first part of an existing name.
I place my images in folders based on their content. Then I use the template to set the folder name, then the date, the a number. So I have a folder of dog images. When I click F2 and use the template I made, all images come out:
Dog_year_month_day_000.extention. I know what the image is by the name and when I shot it, LR keeps them unique by number. Since I sort by date captured, the numbering works well from low to high.
I'm sure others have techniques that work well for them, this one works well for me. You just have to figure how you want to identify images solely by name.

I am new to Lightroom and have a file naming question. I previously used Capture NX2 to import and rename my files. My convention is "YYYY-MM-DD-HH-MM-SS-JAH".
Capture NX2 had an option where it would add a "-n" after the seconds field (SS in above) and before my initials (-JAH in above). This way, if there multiple pictures within the same second, they would be sequentially numbered. This would avoid overwriting the first image with subsequent ones that would have the same name.
I have not found a way within the Lightroom 3.4.1 naming capabilities to replicate this convention. Am I missing something, or does anyone have a workaround they have discovered.
Thanks,
JimThanks very much Lee. I will give it a shot.

Hi,
I know this sounds utterly idiotic, but is there a way to rename a photo other than in List View in the Browser View? All I want to do is change the name of a single photo that I imported awhile ago.
Thanks.
Edit: Especially in full screen. Is it possible to rename a file in full screen?
Message was edited by: DilznikAlso much easier to do when you are importing. There are a lot of editable options, and using these can help when searching for images in your H Drives outside Aperture.

Hello all. What I'm wanting to do is rename a file and then do some things with the new file name.
1. I want to view the new file name with the full path
2. I want to output the new file name with the full path to a text file or csv file
Here is what I have for outputting the renamed file into a text file, but it isn't working:
cls
$resultsfile = "C:\results3.txt"
clear-content $resultsfile
foreach($item in gc C:\RENAME.txt){
Rename-Item $item "1.txt" | out-file $resultsfile -append
notepad $resultsfile
Any thoughts on how to work with the newly renamed file name?Yes, sorry I forgot to mention that I'm trying to delete a bunch of files whose names are too long. So what I 'm trying to do is to rename the files first with "1.txt" and then I'm going to delete them. I just had a "forehead-slap" moment where I realized
I could just pipe the "rename-item" into "remove-item" and that should accomplish my goals.
But, as for my original question, if I rename a file, how can i view/use the renamed file name? Like if I renamed a file, how could I output the newly renamed file name to a text file? I tried this in my original code above, but it didn't work. Let's just
assume that I have a single file that I want to rename to "1.txt" -
Deleting & renaming files - is there a shortcut to finder?
I am a recent convert from PC to Mac. So far so good. However, one thing starts to drive me up the wall which is deleting/renaming files in programs such as photoshop, word, excel etc.etc.
As far as I can tell, this is only possible in the finder menu. Is this Correct? I am using a lot of folders and subfolders - sometimes 3-4 levels deep. Every time I need to change/delete a file or filename - lets say while in photoshop, I have to go to finder and click my way through several levels of folders to the actual file I need to change. This is somewhat annoying and timeconsuming.
Question 1: is there a way to do these operations in - lets say photoshop directly?
Question 2: If not, is there a shortcut key that would point me automatically to the file in finder where I can make the changes?
Your input would be very helpful and save me some aggravation.
fupeHi Greg,
Thanks for your input. You are correct as far as "save" and "save as" is concerned. Windows and Mac work the same way.
However, as far as I can tell, in Mac you can only "delete" or "rename" a file in "finder" which forces you to open up finder and locate the file in order to delete or change it.
In windows you can do these 2 functions directly in the program (such as photoshop, excel or words). You do not have to go to "explorer or root directory" to make these changes which I believe would be the equivalent of "finder".
In any case, Terence solved the problem. By command clicking the name (title) of the file in any program, it opens up the directory in "finder". This way makes it easy to select the file and do the changes.

Hi..I am pretty new to the world of ABAP.
I have the following task.
I need to right a function module that will be responsible for renaming files on the R/3 system (to a certain predefined format). Basically, I am thinking that FM will import/accept an old file name (incl path) as a parameter, and then FM will take care of actually renaming the file and returning the name of the new filename.
Since I am very new to all the ABAP, can any of you give me some pointers, or maybe some sample code if anybody done something similar?
All the help is appreciated.

How can I automatically rename files based on an excel doc?
I am a scientist and recieve data files from some of my experiments with arbitrary, computer-generated names. For example, if I perform an experiment with four samples, which I name Sample1, Sample2, Sample3, and Sample4, I get back 4 data files named J30935D05.ab1, J30935E05.ab1, J30935F05.ab1 and J30935G05.ab1 along with an Excel doc that lists my names for the samples (sample1, sample 2, etc.) in one column and the computer-generated names for their corresponding files (J30935D05.ab1, J30935E05.ab1, etc.) next to them in another. Therefore, I must open the Excel file and look up which file corresponds to which sample before I can begin processsing my data. Usually these experiments involve a large enough number of samples (70-100 or so) such that looking everything up in the Excel doc gets very tedious and is quite time-consuming. Is there any way to create an automator workflow, applescript, or some other solution to rename these files based on the Excel doc? To clarify, I would like an automator workflow that would take a folder of arbitrarily named files, look up the names I have for the samples in the Excel doc, and rename the files accordingly. In the example, my folder containing files J30935D05.ab1, J30935E05.ab1, J30935F05.ab1 and J30935G05.ab1 would be turned into a folder containing the files renamed as Sample1.ab1, Sample2.ab1, Sample3.ab1, and Sample4.ab1. This example is a bit simplified, however, and trying a simple trick of just systematically renaming files within the folder would not work--both the original and the new file names must be looked up in the Excel doc, as these change dramatically from experiment to experiment. I would also need to maintain the file extension on each file after being renamed. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
Try the freeware utility Renamer4Mac (VersionTracker or MacUpdate).

Rename files in Prelude?
I don't see a way to rename video files in Prelude. Coming from a still photo background I have always renamed files to a sensible name at the point of import. If this can't be done in Prelude is there a suggestion on how to do this before prelude? Kind of a prelude to using prelude?!? For now I will continue to import and rename both still and vid files in Lightroom but would like to see this in Prelude.
Thanks.Hi Mike
Thanks for your response.
Actually this is my first time working with the file based system. XDCAM. Usually the guys give me a single video file for footage and use it just it straight up.
But since I was given an XDCAM I did a search and came across this post. So being my first time not sure how helpful I can be but let me give you my current workflow so maybe this can help answer your question above.
I don't work with producers or directors I work with the end user or "viewer" as the case may be. So they are not technical and I can not tell them to get a copy of prelude and mark it up for me.
What I do is take the raw footage and transcode to a web friendly size ( at this point quality is not the issue but cut points are) and load them up to my site for the client to review and give me notes according to timecode.
Now when I load 20 of these up there and need to link them to my pages I like the files to be something I can understand. So I don't have to write down some sort of reference sheet so I can put the correct video on the correctly worded page.
Of course I can easily batch transcode in media encoder but it is nice to be able to view the files as a group in prelude. (and would be nice to) rename each one while I am looking at it and know what clip it is. then transcode all in one step renanming the originals as an alias if you like in the project panel but would like my transcoded files to be renamed also for the upload.
Not sure how it all works across the other programs yet, but I would like that if I can once on the initial ingest rename files to something I can easily understand what they are and be able to use that across the holy trinity Prelude, Premiere and After Effects. That would be most helpful -
MD5 Checksum Changes When Renaming Files in Bridge?
Just like the title says: MD5 checksum seems to be changing when renaming files in Bridge
Is this normal? Is there anyway to disable this? Checksums do not seem to change when renaming a file outside of Bridge (ie; in Windows Explorer or Mac Finder).
Ken
P.S. System is Windows 7 using Bridge CS6 (64bit)Thanks for the quick reply Curt.
Until you just now asked the question, I could not explain why it should not change. Now, if I understand correctly after googling around a bit, it appears the hash can be computed either with or without the filename (among other things).
Apparently Bridge computes the hash including the filename. It seems there is an option to compute the hash based only on the file contents (ie; without the filename). My assumption was that by default, the checksum was generated using only the files contents (ie; without the filename).
I'm hoping someone can comment definitively on how Adobe Bridge does it and whether or not there's a way to change it.

Bursting - Rename Files to current XML Data
Folks, many thanks for the poster who has allowed me to rename files. This is working correctly using the following snippet.
public void afterProcessDocument(int requestIndex, int documentIndex, Vector documentOutputs) {
String outFileName = (String)documentOutputs.get(0);
File newFile;
File oldFile = new File(outFileName);
newFile = new File(oldFile.getParent() + File.separator + "newfile" + oldFile.getName());
oldFile.renameTo(newFile);
documentOutputs.remove(0);
documentOutputs.add(0, newFile.getPath());
As you can see, its still somewhat "hard coded".
My question relates to the API. I would like to rename my files to say the "TRX_NUMBER" so I can then insert the bursted invoice as an attachment to the actual invoice in the system. I therefore need to be able to extract and match the current XML record for the bursting. There seems to be no way to do this using the published API. The Vector doesn't seems to hold it in the bursting listener - it only holds the renamed file.
This one might be for a BIP developer, we are using 5.6.2 under EBS, will 5.6.3 resolve this?Very ambitious!
Here are ideas you may want to consider for your project:

http://mthamilton.ucolick.org/hamcam/dailyStills/cam2/
http://mthamilton.ucolick.org/hamcam/dailyMovies/cam2/HC2_daily.mpg
I use hamcam everyday for my daily bicycle ride-weather station.
Perhaps, you want to limit daily still to 08:00AM-06:00PM and also have a daily time lapse, you can use Quicktime to do the time lapse footage. -
Rename files or folders in Windows 8 not working
Rename a file or folder on a Windows CE device is not working from Windows 8 when connected through Windows Mobile Device Center.
From Windows 7 it worked just fine!
This has been a problem for a very long time now, and im not alone according to all forums.
But no fix as far as i can find!
Is there anyone that have found a fix on this?http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows8_1-files/windows-8-unable-to-rename-files-on-pocket-pc/abae21b7-7ee1-41c7-853e-1ac7ea5b0413
It seems a issue in window 8.x system. Maybe you can ask for a MS support ticket. -
Sharepoint 2013 ItemAdded event receiver for renaming files is not working
In SP 2013 I coded an event receiver that intercepts the ItemAdded event and it just renames the file.
It is a synchronous event (I added <Synchronization>Synchronous</Synchronization> in the Elements.xml).
This is the code:
public override void ItemAdded(SPItemEventProperties properties)
SPSecurity.RunWithElevatedPrivileges(delegate()
try
OutputDebugStringA("Inside ItemAdded");
string szHttpUrl = properties.WebUrl + "/" + properties.AfterUrl;
SPWeb openedWeb = properties.Web.Site.OpenWeb(properties.Web.ID);
SPFile spf = openedWeb.GetFile(szHttpUrl);
EventFiringEnabled = false;
string szUrl = properties.AfterUrl;
szUrl = szUrl + ".renamed";
string szNewFileName;
if (szUrl.LastIndexOf('\\') != -1) szNewFileName = szUrl.Substring(szUrl.LastIndexOf('\\') + 1);
else if (szUrl.LastIndexOf('/') != -1) szNewFileName = szUrl.Substring(szUrl.LastIndexOf('/') + 1);
else szNewFileName = szUrl;
if (properties.ListItem != null)
properties.ListItem["Title"] = szNewFileName;
properties.ListItem.Update();
spf.MoveTo(szUrl);
EventFiringEnabled = true;
base.ItemAdded(properties);
OutputDebugStringA("Renaming to " + szUrl);
catch (System.Exception exception)
OutputDebugStringA("ItemAdded ERROR: " + exception.ToString());
The problem is that when I upload a .txt file using Internet Explorer, just after the renaming is done, IE says that something went wrong and when I inspect the log files I see:

So it is clear that the fact that I renamed the file is causing an issue in the SharePoint upload logic.
As a solution what I did was to not declare it as Synchronous, but if I do it then there is another error when Sharepoint shows the Edit Properties dialog... in this case the upload is OK but when it is time to show that Edit Property dialog IE fails and
says that the file has been already modified, or that "something went wrong".
If I use a synchronous event I get one problem. If I use the asynchronous event I get another problem... It's very frustating and I am pretty sure that a so important API like Event Receivers should have support renaming files so I hope someone can tell
me what I am doing wrong.
Thanks in advanceMay be you want to consider using the following code and see if it works for you.

Rename file name & format using ftp sender
Hi all,
This is regarding the renaming of file at sender file(FTP) communication channel and placeing the same file in the same folder.
At FTP server at sender side (i.e.clients place) is in .txt format.But now .txt file has to rename and change into .sav foramt with below required name convention of file.
client format is : SAP_Order.txt (Pervious file name).
We need to change the file in to "SAP_Order_yyyymmddThhmmss.sav" format..
How can i achieve this requirement?
Can please suggests me solutions ASAP.
Best Regards,
satya,Hi,
if your requirement is to pick the existing file in the FTP folder...and send as idoc to the target and place the renamed file to FTP folder...
then its simple...
use two receivers instead of one , one for point to target and other for sender itself... (second receiver is for changing the file name format....)
Hope the above understanding is correct...if not provide more details of your requirement...

How to open renamed files?
Hi
I rename selected files and after that want to open them.
For my purpose renaming works well like this:
tell application "Finder"
set FilesToRENAME to selection
display dialog "Change what?" default answer ""
set ChangeFROM to text returned of the result
display dialog "Change to?" default answer ""
set ChangeTO to text returned of the result
set AppleScript's text item delimiters to {ChangeFROM}
set theCount to count of FilesToRENAME
repeat with x from 1 to theCount
try
set theName to name of item x of FilesToRENAME
set FirstNamePart to first text item of theName
set LastNamePart to second text item of theName
set newName to FirstNamePart & ChangeTO & LastNamePart
set name of item x of FilesToRENAME to newName
on error errStr number theNumber
activate
display dialog "Error in changing the Name " & theNumber & return & errStr ¬
& return & "Step " & x
end try
end repeat
set AppleScript's text item delimiters to ""
end tell
Now newly renamed files don't belong anymore to FilesToRENAME. So how to point to those files now (how to make a new list from those renamed files)? I was thinking to get a path to each file inside the repeat loop and replace the name, but couldn't do it.
Thank you for any help.
VeraPierre's method is pretty clever, but if you don't happen to be using a Finder selection (choose file for example), you can also use the interesting fact that an alias keeps track of an item even if it is moved or renamed.

set changeTo to text returned of (display dialog "Change to?" default answer "")
set renamedFiles to {} -- this will be the renamed files
repeat with aFile in filesToRename
set aFile to the contents of aFile
tell application "Finder" to set theName to name of aFile
try
set tempTID to AppleScript's text item delimiters
set AppleScript's text item delimiters to {changeFrom}
set firstNamePart to first text item of theName
set lastNamePart to second text item of theName
set AppleScript's text item delimiters to tempTID
set newName to firstNamePart & changeTo & lastNamePart
tell application "Finder"
set name of aFile to newName -- aFile points to the original file
update aFile -- give Finder a chance to catch up
set the end of renamedFiles to aFile -- aFile now points to the renamed file
end tell
on error errStr number theNumber
activate me
display alert "Error " & theNumber & " in changing the Name" message errStr
end try
end repeat
