Renaming in LR needs Changes--or I need help!

Question

Is there any way to simply rename individual images in grid view without having to haul out the heavy artillary with F2?
I am used to DAMs and other image apps where all one has to do to rename a single image is to click (or double click) on the name and rename it, or any part of it. Or go to a batch renaming menu and enter a name for the images selected in a simple requester, or one that holds its configuration until the next time it opens. All this is very standard stuff in the world of image editing.
A good model for what I am talking about can be found in, of all places, Adobe Bridge 2--and dozens of other applications.
having to hit F2, then choose EDIT from the dropdown, write in the name, click out of the template, hit OK, just to get a single filename changed is about 3 giant steps back in effective workflow.
Is there something I am missing here? An easier, faster, way of simple renaming.
I would far rather be thought of as uninformed than to discover that what I have described is it for renaming in LR. I have done a search, by the way, and nothing turned up.

What I did was go to EDIT in the F2 opened Rename dialogue, chose {filename} and then added custom from the bottom of the menu so that the entry read {filename} {custom}, saved it as a preset called 'mine', and that allows the custom text box to become active and F2 opens the menu on 'mine' as default, so all I have to do is type in the Title text that I want added to the camera numbering system filename (which I keep as the standard prefix to all my images).
Is that what you were suggesting?
At any rate, that now makes renaming three times as fast as I was doing it before in LR and equally as fast as in Bridge 2.
That solves the problem.
