Renaming iphoto

I wanted to create a new iphoto library so I renamed my original iphoto in my pictures folder. I then created a new library. But, when I opened the original one that I renamed my pictures have all disappeared. I have attempted to restore them through my time machine, but that isn't working. How do I restore them to my iphoto library short of going into my "all images" file and manually importing them back into iphoto?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. What did you rename: the library package or the photos inside of it or both? How did you rename the pictures if that's what you did? I hope not from the Finder as that's committing the cardinal sin of iPhoto, messing the the contents of the library from the Finder.
Why don't you just restore the entire library with TM? You can select the option to keep both versions so you can check to see if the restored version has all your photos.
Post back with exactly what you did and how so se can go from there.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Are renamed iPhoto libraries seen as new packages in Time Machine?

I have been using Time Machine for a few months with no problems, although sometimes only backing up once every few days after having done some work. This morning I plugged in TM, let it "Prepare", (which normally takes a bit longer after not backing up for a few days), and then a message popped up saying the backup was too large for the HDD and had therefore failed. Unfortunately, this also meant that TM deleted ALL my previous backups except for the last one - without warning despite having the appropriate option ticked in Options. (Extremely annoying, but not a complete disaster, as I do not delete files from my internal HDD hoping they'll be on my TM backup - I know it doesn't work like that).
There was 15GB left on the HDD and the additional files/work added in the previous day can't have exceeded 2GB, so I didn't understand why TM was asking for 47GB. Searches on Google and these discussions led me to believe that lots of people had experienced similar problems, but nothing that solved my problem.
Then I suddenly remembered that I had renamed two iPhoto Libraries (with a combined weight of about 38GB). Adding them to the list of folders to ignore made TM start working again. Then I renamed them back to the original name and backed-up again.
So, was TM not clever enough to tell that my renamed iPhoto library was the same instance as a previously backed-up library? Is there any way to rename an iPhoto library and avoid this issue again? Is this the same with all renamed files or just with package files? Could this be the cause of other peoples' problems?

So, if I rename a single large file (i.e. not a folder), will it also treat that as having been deleted and back up a completely new instance of it or is it intelligent enough to simply redirect the hard link to the newly-named file?
No, it's treated as one item deleted, another created. Doesn't matter whether it's a single file, folder with a zillion sub-folders, package, application, or whatever.
And again, it's true whether you're using TM, which uses the File System Event log to determine what's changed, or one of the alternatives like CarbonCopyCloner, SuperDuper, etc., that look at every file and folder on your system to determine what's changed.
If things aren't in the same place, they may be copies of something that is or was elsewhere, but they really aren't the same.
I have experimented with moving a file to another folder and it backs it up all over again, despite a Mac Genius telling me it wouldn't!!
    They're not perfect, either.

  • Renaming iPhoto album folders

I just found out I committed the cardinal sin of renaming iPhoto album folders while in Finder. Of course now nothing shows up in iPhoto app except empty shells of what used to be my photos. All the original photo file names are still the same, I only changed the folder names that they reside in. Is there something I can do to re-access all my photos in the library?

    David,
You could rename the folders back to their original name. How large is your library and how many changes did you make? Folders are named year/month/date, all in numbers such as 2005/09/13. You can look a a few photos in each folder and determine the proper naming scheme. If you have a large library, this could be quite an effort. If you moved files around after renaming the folders, you are in for an even bigger task and one that may not be realistic to get right.
You could also extract your photos using iPhoto Extractor and then re-import the photos into a new iPhoto Library.
    Hope this helped!

  • TD or Old Toad pls help: Renamed iPhoto Library File....no pics in iPhoto6

I am working on my parents computer... they have iPhoto 6 and I renamed the iPhoto Library folder in Finder. Obviously this is not a good idea since now there is no content (pics) in iPhoto.
This action made a new folder (with the new name) in Finder's 'pictures' file. So, I tried to copy and paste (or maybe I highlighted & moved it, can't recall) the contents of the newly named folder back under the 'iphoto library' folder however, that did not make the photos reappear in iPhoto.
After moving (I think I highlighted & dragged) the file contents of the newly named folder back in the 'iPhoto Library' folder, I deleted the newly named/created file.
The individual pics seem to be in the modified & originalsfolder but I do not know how to get them back into iPhoto..
I attempted to rebuild the iPhoto library but it seemed like an empty request since the computer didnt do anything when this option was selected.
I know there is a solution but I dont know the smartest nextstep. I have read related discussions that almost provide a solution.
Currently, I need to figure out a way to:
    1) get what seems to still exist in the modified & original folders back into iPhoto even if it means loosing album names, keywords. I am hoping this route doesn’t wipe out dates from when the images were taken. If there is a way to get them back into iPhoto this route, I need instructions.
    or,
    2) I have a back up of the entire HD on an external HD. Would itbe best to somehow use that to replace what I have on the computer HD? I do not know how to do this so for sure need guidance.
    or,
    3) Find another solution, quickly…
Thank you so very much as I need to fix this ASAP.

  • Pics in iPhoto Disappeared after renaming iPhoto Library File in Finder

    Friends,
I was working on my parents computer in an effort to help them organize their files, etc.
They have iPhoto 6 and I renamed the iPhoto Library folder in Finder. Obviously this is not a good idea since now there is no content (pictures) in iPhoto.
This action made a new folder (with the new name) in Finder's 'pictures' section. So, I tried to copy and paste (or maybe I dragged it, cant recall) the contents of the newly named folder back under the 'iphoto library' folder however, that did not make the photos reappear in iPhoto.
After moving (I think I highlighted & dragged) the file contents of the newly named folder back in the 'iPhoto Library' folder, I deleted the newly named/created file.
It appears as though the images are still in the original & modified folders however, no pics in iPhoto.
And, the irony of the entire action is that I was renaming the 'iPhoto Library' folder to 'iPhoto Library - Do Not Touch' so my parents would not mess with the content as they have done in the past. Apparently, I am the one who needs to stay away.
    Thanks a bunch!

Thanks Badunit, and yes, you are correct about not having the newly named library to choose when holding down the Option key while opening iPhoto.....b/c I drug the contents back under the original iPhoto library folder and then deleted the newly name folder.
The individual pics seem to be in the modified & originals folder but I do not know how to get them back into iPhoto. Importing one by one doesnt seem like the correct option.
I attempted to rebuild the iPhoto library but that resulted in nothing happening when I choose that option.
I know there is a solution but I dont know the smartest next step. I have read related discussions that almost provide a solution.

Help! I need to get this fixed today (i.e. father is getting an iPad for retirement at a big reception and I need the computer in working order to make it all happen so he has pics on the iPad to display at the event). I think I may have to page TD or Old Toad....

  • Problem when renaming iPhoto Library

I recently renamed two iPhoto Libraries. A day later I plugged in my external HDD to do a Time Machine (TM) backup and noticed that TM deleted ALL my previous backups except the last one, stating there was not enough space.
My conclusion is that renaming these libraries caused TM to see them as NEW libraries and wanted to back them up all over again, meaning I needed 40GB of space rather than the 15GB available and let to the deletion of all my previous backups (without warning)!
I have posted about this in the TM forum, but decided to mention it here as well to warn others of this potential problem.

problem when copying iphoto library from ext hd to ext hd. stops after 2 gb saying there was data with same name on target hd. but that one is brandnew and freshly formatted.
How are your external HDs formatted?  Both need to be formatted MacOS Extended (Journaled, not case sensitive) to work with iPhoto.
If the file system differ, you may have problems with ambitious filenames, for example, if one drive is case sensitive and the other not.

  • Why is my iphoto renamed iphoto (original)?

Recently when I ran TimeMachine on my MacBook Pro I tried to retrieve an older version of iphoto because I had some missing pictures. When I retrieved it from Time Machine it renamed it iphoto (original) and now I can't get the software update.

Because at some point you had two versions of the app (after the restore), and it stopped one overwritng the other.
You can rename the app like you can any file.

  • Photos are lost after renaming iPhoto Library

I changed the name of my iPhoto Library from the Finder, and now I can no longer find the photos in those libraries.  There are no "Modified" or "Original" directories with sub-directories of the photos any more.  I've also tried an application called "iPhoto Library Manager", and it couldn't find the photos either.
Could renaming the directory change its content and cause the photos to be deleted?  Or have they just been moved?
Is there any way to get the photos back?

    Thank you.
But when I do that, I get a screen that lists my current library.  I click on "Other Library" and get a window which shows all the sub-directories of my Pictures directory.  If I click on one of the other iPhoto Libraries, it just opens that sub-directory and asks me to select a file.  There are directories "Before Restore" and "Metadata Backup" and some files which are greyed out.  I go into those directories and some more greyed out files show up.  Nothing that could be selected.  What should I do?

  • Iphoto '08 is blank after I renamed iphoto library

I created a new iphoto library and renamed the original iphoto library, but now both are blank. I tried rebuilding by holding down option and command keys, but both are still blank. Please help.

have you pointed iPhoto to the correct library? Depress the option key and launch iPhoto and use the select library option
rebuilding is not a part of changing the location of the iPhoto library

  • Renaming iPhoto files

This really shouldn't be so complicated.. but it is.
I am wanting to label/rename photos in iphoto. Then drag and drop them into a folder on the desktop and move them to backup hard drive. This way, years down the road, I can find my picture and not IMG4964, etc. Problem is, I can re-title my picture in iphoto but once I drag it to the desktop, it reverts back to original file name.
All I am trying to do is stay organized.. help!

When you dra and drop from the iPhoto Window you're already losing quality, as what you're getting is a Preview.
If you don't want to change the quality of your shots:
File -> Export and set the Kind to Original
Then at the Filename setting, choose 'Use Title'
That will export your original file with the title as filename.
With respect, there is no way to organise files on your HD that is easier to search and organise more easily that iPhoto.

  • Can't rename iPhoto movies

In Front Row, the name given to my movies recorded on a digital photo camera stays the same even if I change the name in iPhoto. For instance, say I want to rename a short clip from H348602 which the camera saves it as, to "Test". . . I do so in iPhoto via the Info button and things look fine, but Front Row still calls it H348602. Is there any way to let it show it's name?

Interesting. I'm unable to get my digital camera's movies to appear in Front Row at all. I never really looked before, but I do have several. If I look at the album in the "Photos" module and select an albums that only has a movie in it, I get an error "beep" and I have to force-quit Front Row.
Besides that, are you changing the name of the movie in the Finder? Can you not change the name in iPhoto? Or have you tried both?
EDIT: Never mind. I re-read your previous posts. I was able to right-click on one of the videos in iPhoto and choose "Show File" which revealed the original file in my iPhoto library. I option-dragged the file into my user's "Movies" folder and re-named it in the Finder there. Then it appeared in my Videos module with the new name. Maybe iPhoto's organization won't allow renaming the files?

  • How to batch rename iPhoto photo-files?

    Hi there,
I do have some 15.000 photos in my library and many of them do have the same names (digital camera or digital disc transfer).
So when I just want to copy some photos to another folder or whatever, i run into some problems because many photos carry the same name, they cant be saved into one folder.
Do i have a chance of batch renamining the FILENAMES of my iPhoto library without damaging anything?
    Alexander

You can select the files you want to rename, right click and choose "Batch Change". Select the title, select Text, and then type in a name... click on the checkbox to append a sequence number to the photo.
OR if you want to go through and manually select photos and rename them, just edit their title.
NOW for the tricky part. This renames the image in the iPhoto library, but as you mentioned, the filenames are not being changed. Select the photos you just renamed, and export them (from the file menu). You then can direct iPhoto to export them using the TITLE rather than the existing original file name. Look in the folder, and you will see that you have new files created with the title as the filename instead.
This can be confusing, but just remember iPhoto IS a database, not a file browser (like Finder).

  • Renamed iPhoto library now unable to open?

    Hi
As it was the start of a new year i thought that i would start a new iPhoto library - i went into finder and renamed the iPhoto Library - iPhoto Library2006 - this forced iPhoto to open up new iPhoto Library which of course was empty.
Now if i try to open iPhoto Library2006 using iPhoto Library Manager or iPhoto Buddy i still get the (empty) iPhoto Library?
I have since deleted the new iPhoto Library and renamed the iPhoto Library2006 to it's original title - iPhoto Library.
In Finder this library thows up as 1.62GB but still opens with 'no photos'.
    I'm using iPhoto 6.05
Where have i gone wrong folks?
    Thanks

    Ian
I'm sorry to say, but it looks like somehow in the Naming/Renaming business you have overwritten the library file. With a folder size of 1.63 gigs, I would expect that file to be several megabytes. A 4kb file is brand new.
Do you have a back up? If so, now is the time for it. If not, then you'll need to rebuild your library from scratch: To rebuild the library: move the iPhoto Library Folder to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library Folder on your desktop and find there the Originals folder. From there drag the individual rolls to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library Folder on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • Renaming iPhoto libraries

I want to archive my thousands of photos to get them off my only computer, a MBP. I'm new to managing iPhoto and Aperture libraries. I want to drag and drop an iPhoto library into an external hard drive to serve as an archive. If I do, there will be something called iPhoto Library on my external drive. When I shoot and add more photos to my MBP iPhoto library, I will want to also move that newly-added-to library off to the external drive. Then I may have two things called iPhoto Library. Is it possible and OK to rename an iPhoto Library and call it, for example, John's 2009 iPhotos, and John's 2010 iPhotos? Or must I preserve the name iPhoto Library? BTW, I also use Aperture and work on images via iPhoto as referenced files.

You can have multiple iPhoto libraries and each can have any name (and be on any Mac formatted disk) - and iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ - is a good tool for managing multiple libraries
BTW, I also use Aperture and work on images via iPhoto as referenced files.
I think you are saying that in Aperture you reference the iPhoto photos - if you have changed iPhoto to reference your photos you will not be able to relocate your libraries easily
