Renaming launchpad folders

so far except for scrolling (but trying it before reverting), Im loving Lion.  However, Is there a way to rename a a launchpad folders instead of using the default that Lion assigns it.
example, if I create a folder with Garageband and iPhoto, it defaults  productivity, I would prefer to make it iLife.
Thoughts?
Thanks in advance

Open the folder and click on the Folder Name at Top Left corner of this folder

  • Rename launchpad folders as standard user

    Hi,
I set up a standard user (= non-admin) on Lion (10.7.2) and seem to find that one can create but not rename folders in launchpad from that account. Is this by design? I tried the tricks that others have reported for getting it to work (e.g. restarting dock and removing the application settings) but did not have any luck. I suspect that in all those cases people were using an admin account? The launchpad folder renaming still works fine in the admin account.
    Thanks!

  • Renaming files/folders on desktop: weird.

    Hi
Since I have OSX Lion, and I want to rename files/folders on my desktop nothing happens.
Or at least not what is suppose to happen. Pressing enter in a finder window works perfect, like always.
But when I hit enter on a file or folder on my desktop it go's blank.
I can't see what i'm doing, but the name will change if I typ a new one. Quit confusing and realy difficult to work with. Any idea's how to fix this?

This has been driving me nuts but I accidentally found the cause...but not the solution.  It is a Lion thing as spaces did not have this issue.
I am assuming you are using multiple screens (mission control, formerly spaces).  If you go to screen 1 and try to rename the file you CAN see the name as you rename it.  If you go to any other screen and try to rename it you get the blank space.
In my case I never rename files on my main screen.  I always rename them on which ever screen I am working (word is screen 5, so docx saved to the desktop are renamed on screen 5).

  • Unable to rename white folders

I'm unable to rename the white folders of an IMAP account.
I can rename white folders "On My Mac" and I can rename all blue folders. I just can't rename the white folders of an IMAP account.
    I get the following error:
    Error
The IMAP command "RENAME" (to new folder name) failed with server error: Mailbox does not exist.
    Any ideas?

Create new folder with correct name, move contents from old folder into new folder and delete old folder.

  • Can't name new folders or rename existing folders in Finder

I can't name new folders or rename existing folders in Finder. I've never had this happen before. I tried both using the new folder icon and choosing "new folder" from the actions icon. The only unusual thing I'm doing now is working with Spaces enabled, but I can't imagine that this has anything to do with the problem. Selecting and hitting "return" doesn't allow me to either erase existing text or overwrite with new text. Any ideas?
    Thanks.

    Same here --
I just created a new folder and couldn't change its name. Finder would give me "more info" (permissions certainly not an issue) and allow me to delete (and then recreate) the folder, but not change its name.
Problem came from out of the blue, on a one-week-old system with all OS updates. Also found this old thread, which also suggests a Finder restart: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8989639
So that'll probably do it, but what gives?
Not so impressed with 10.5.7 so far... first a complete system crash while doing no more than downloading updates (a few hours after booting up for the first time), then networking stopped working (see http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2003868), now this...

Place your finger on a folder and wait for it to wiggle... lift up... tap on the folder again... now you can rename the folder .

  • I accidently renamed image folders in bridge and cannot access the folder images.

I accidently renamed image folders in bridge and can no longer access the folders. Is there a way to get the images back?

On what Mac using what version of OS X?

  • No permision to rename Bridge folders

I tried to rename a folder in Bridge 2.1.1.9 and got the response that I do not have permission to rename the folder. I can add and delete all files in the folder and rename other folders in Bridge without a problem.
I sign on my windows XP system as administrator and am the only user of CS3 on this computer. There are no user restrictions under the user accounts in Windows XP. I have never used version cue. How do I regain "permission" to rename this folder?

Not sure if the same system exists in XP but in Vista you can right click on Bridge icon and select "Run as Administrator". This will eliminate the message you got. Not an expert here, but believe this is not the same as being the only user, or signing on as administrator as I have seen a difference in permission levels from my use.
The other possibility is that you have that folder open in another program at the time you want to rename it.

  • Cannot rename files, folders and drives

tried to GRAB the error message, and it's hanged when I tried to save the image.....
There are problems on rename files, folders and drives, also have problem to delete things....
    what can I do.....!!!!

Ok, finally i just reboot the machine and it is fine now.
I guess there are some bugs related to the user permissions...
Indeed, I encountered a few bugs and they were fixed by rebooting the machine.
More details: I am using a early 2008 version mac pro with mountain lion and upgrade os to mavericks last nite.
At first, it cannot connect to my wifi network, it kept asking me to enter password for my network but kept saying it s failed. After trial to fix it by a few methods which were failed, i gave up and reboot, and vala~ It worked again..
Then i tried to rename my system drive as it was named "mountain lion", and i just want to rename it to "mavericks", error popped out, and i found that i cant rename folders or files, or put them in trash.... Again, it worked again after reboot!!!!
Guys, for those who wannna upgrade to mavericks now, better wait for a few more weeks till some update come up n fix those issues....

  • How to use EWS or Powershell to rename all folders that have a forward slash in them

We have many users that have created folders in Outlook that have forward slashes in the name (i.e. / ). They did this in Outlook/Exchange 2003. We upgraded to Outlook 2010 and this is no longer aloud so there are issues with the folders when performing
functions such as trying to share or using IMAP, etc.
I'm looking for a way to specify a particular user's mailbox in a script and have it traverse every folder/subfolder and check if there is a forward slash in the name. If there is a forward slash I would like to rename the folder to something like the bar
character (i.e |) or another character that is valid.
I had most users go through Outlook manually and clean them up. However there are a handful of users that have hundreds if not thousands of subfolders that have the forward slash in them.
I've done extensive research on this (references to my research below) and came close in putting a script together but I just can't figure it out. Anyone have an example for this? Even if I need to specify a folder within the Inbox and have the script only
process subfolders from this location would be acceptable since most of them are subfolders of a particular folder.
    Thank you.

First two articles are for public folders so it won't help here as you have mailbox folders...

This is good starting point, you might need to change the logics around it  to search / and replace with - or someting, this might be the code change needed from that article but would suggest you to test it first.
    foreach ($folder in $ffResponse.Folders)
    if ($folder.Displayname -like “*/*”)
Write-Output “Found / in the $mailboxName and folder name is $folder.Displayname”
    $folder.Displayname.Replace("/","-")
    $folder.Update()

  • PSE9: renaming of folders in organizer very slow

My problem: when renaming folders in the folder tree in PSE 9's organizer, it takes a long time for the name change to happen. It's easily 10-20 seconds.
Is this a known phenomenon? Has anybody made the same observation (and found a solution?)
    Computer specs:
    Windows 7 32bit home premium
    CPU Intel Core2Duo E6600
    4 GB RAM
    Many thanks for all replies!
    Christian Spyr

Thank you for all your replies.
The pictures are all on the computer, not on a network.
I have turned off auto analyze.
The catalog has currently several thousand pictures (close to 10,000, if I remember correctly [currently not at my computer]). Does that qualify as 'large'?
I have optimized it quite recently, upon noticing the problem (which didn't help with the slow renaming).

  • Where are my photos? iPhoto library hides them AND renames the folders

I recently upgraded to Lion OS and can no longer see my photos and videos in Finder. A search shows that they are all in a dir that is actually an iPhoto library. Bizarrely it has been given the name of the first lot of photos that I imported in to iPhoto from a flash drive - so all of my photos are "packaged" inside a file called "mom's photos"!!!. In Finder it appears as a data item - NOT as a folder - the contents of which can be seen by clicking "Show Package Contents". Inside this "package" is the directory tree that Get Info shows is the path for a photo file. The photos have been arbitrarily put in to directories called "Modified" and Originals within which they have been stored in folders with year names ("2003", "2006", etc) that have no connection to the date the photos were created or their file names.
Is this considered to be progress by Apple?  How can I work with my files independently of iPhoto or iMovie (raw video being also inside the iPhoto library "package")? How can I reverse the renaming of the folders? Can I rename the iPhoto library to a default name - such as "iPhoto Library" for example!
Any pointers on how to deal with this new regime for handling photos and video will be welcome
    jilsybean

    It's really very simple.
If you want to manage files, use a file browser.
If you want to manage photos, use a Photo manager like iPhoto.
No version of iPhoto has supported the user accessing the files via the Finder. None at all. In versions 1 to iPhoto 6 it was possible to view the contents of the library, but accessing was not supported. Making changes within the iPhoto Library was not supported. Renaming files and folders corrupted the Library.
So, with iPhoto 7 (released in the autumn of 2007) the library was moved into a package to protect it from Users making these changes.
How the files are stored simply doesn't matter. Why? Because everything you need to do can - and should - be done via the iPhoto application. It's a database, after all, and like any db requires that you manipulate the data via the app itself, not a back door.
iPhoto is your go-to app for anything you need to do with your Photos. You simply never access them via the Finder.
So, you can edit either with iPhoto - or in any other app: You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
Or, you want to access your photos for any reason at all:
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:   You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
There's a similar option in Outlook and many, many other apps.  If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running:
For users of 10.6 and later:  You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation  which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu.
Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and 10.5 Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
Show File:  a. On iPhoto 09 and earlier:  Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.    3.b.
b: On iPhoto 11 and later: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
All of the above are a: faster and b: safer than rooting around in the old library folders.
I know it's a change but you'll get used to it. And, of course, if you don't, you can always use another app.

  • How to stop Windows iTunes from spontaneously creating new folders with duplicate copies of songs, and renaming existing folders?

I've recently started using iTunes regularly to import CDs. Since then, I've found my Windows 'My Music' folder is behaving in bizarre ways.
I like to organise most of my music in folders by Genre --> Album title, without paying attention to Artist. I also like to rename certain album folders (and the Album name in each track's metadata as well, so that each album/folder remains consistent), and also to create customised 'mix tape' album folders. I just want to use Windows Explorer / My Computer to manage this; I don't want to do it via iTunes. I just want to use iTunes for initially getting the music from CD to computer.
Previously, when I was using Windows Media Player to import CDs, if Windows Media Player placed an imported CD under a folder category I don't use, such as Artist, I would just manually move the Album folder and delete the empty parent Artist folder. However these days iTunes is spontaneously creating an entire series of Artist folders, even for tracks and albums that were already on my computer, and is placing duplicate track files into them. Additionally, it's renaming albums for folders and tracks I've customised, turning album titles back into their original values. This is happening even though the destination for newly imported/downloaded iTunes tracks is not the My Music folder itself, but rather another folder within that one. I've had a look at Preferences --> Advanced and the 'Keep iTunes media folder organised' and 'Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library' boxes are already unchecked, so it's not related to that anyway. How do I get iTunes to leave my folders alone?

First off see this user tip so should any further unwanted changes happen you have a chance to revert to your original layout.
It is not unknown for AV software to interfere with iTunes and corrupt its configuration files. If this happens iTunes can revert to the default settings to "Keep..." & "Copy...". Deselecting those options won't return any files to their original paths.
If you have "Show iTunes in the Cloud Purchases" enabled under Edit > Preferences > Store that can lead iTunes to download the original metadata for any of your purchases and show that instead of any edits you may have made to it. Turing that option off and restarting iTunes may reveal your version of the metadata.
There is another option under Edit > Preferences > Store that reads "Share details about your library with Apple" although I don't think that changes metadata in the way that the similar option in Windows Media Player does. Double-check your settings in Windows Media Player (Options > Library) to make sure it isn't set to "Retrieve additional information from the Internet". This is usually the cause of spontaneous tag resetting. WMP can be called into life in the background when visiting certain websites and it has a lazy cache, meaning it can sometimes write out metadata to your media files long after the data was originally acquired.
It is also work noting that mp3 files may contain multiple tags and iTunes, for one, treats these unpredictably. In some cases it may appear to accept and write out a tag change only to later read back the original unchanged data from another copy of the tag.

  • Apps won't move out of Launchpad folders anymore

This used to work but now it's stopped and restarting has not fixed it.
If I hold down ALT to get all the apps doing the little wiggle, I cannot move an app out of a folder anymore.  It will allow me to click it and drag it but trying to drop it back into the main Launchpad area has no effect.  So now I'm stuck with Apps in the folders I have but I really want to move some of them around !
Anyone else have this problem ?

yes, and when you add them all back, one at a time, you wind up moving them all around in LauchisBadAgainForMe. What's worse, for inexplicable reason, new panels are created based on the apps. For example, apple apps go direct to panel 1, Adobe apps go to panel 2, as if to say "hey adobe, we are hiding u from the main page!"
I'm deleting the LaunchBad icon again. Oh well, at least it's free.

  • Renaming IMAP FOLDERS (what the heck?)

I seem to be having an issue renaming folders that are on my "web-based" website email that I am accessing via IMAP on Mail.
Is there a reason I can't rename a folder when in Mail?
Are there issues with accessing IMAP email that is stored on my domain based email? And if so is there anything in particular I should check or watch out for?
    Thanks,
    Jon
[More generally, I seem to be have had a big time problem working with Thunderbird so I ditched it for Postbox. I now seem to be having problems actually /seeing/ folders that exist in my domain based email while in Postbox (this makes it hard to organize mail if you can't see the folders...) and I am also seeing /empty/ folders in Postbox when there is actually mail in them on my web-based access (this makes it easy to delete the folder and trash email that is actually there that you think is not there - because you can't see it).]

not sure what that http link is all about as it shouldn't really be there. That said the note is to see if I can move to Mail without expecting similar issues that I am having with postbox...
