Renaming master folder in a referenced system

I've discovered renaming the masters folder seems to tic off Aperture. Anyone know a way to change the name of the masters folder in a referenced system without loosing the pathway in Apertures Library. My master folder is highly organized after years of preAperture organization.
Thanks,
BobM

Crashed again with whole library selected. But library seems intact this time. Done the few hundred at a time before. That's when it gets long and tedious.
Maybe it's me and my setup.
Guess I'll just live with the old name on folder.
Thanks for your help rw.

  • I'm confused: 2 Aperture libraries + folder of externally referenced files

Ok...I might be doing this completely the wrong way...but its how I "learned".
I import files from my camera onto my MacBook Pro.
After that, I move the photos to my external drive (via File>Relocate Master).
Now on my external drive I have another Aperture Library, which exists at the same level as the folder for all the relocated files.
Is this "normal"? I figured there should be only one Library. Can I delete the Library (~29GB) on my external drive and just keep my folder of externally referenced files (~21GB)?
    Confusedly,
    J

    Thanks Karsten!
2 more if you are willing...
    1.
So I started Aperture off the library on my external, and it appears to be older (fewer photos by about 10% or so).
I think I can trash it, but is there any harm in me simply dragging it away in some folder and never looking at it again...just in case I missed something when comparing the two and trying to determine which was the "correct" version to keep? I'm just freaked out about losing something (or previous adjustments done to a file).
Hard drive space is not an issue for me fortunately - I have lots left.
    2.
I now have to rename my external drive, but per your other post (thanks for that too!) - it sounds like it should be easy.
I looked for "Referenced" using the HUD and it showed all the pics. So I think I have moved all my pics to the internal drive.
Now I think I can rename while Aperture is not running, then "Relocate" the masters.
    3.
Why is my Aperture library (the one I am using to launch the app, and should be the correct one) so large?
It is 9.67GB in size. It is referencing 7600 images, a lot of which have keywords, and very few have any type of adjustments done to them yet.
Thanks again so much, this is a great assistance...

  • I Renamed Home Folder and lost all settings, jpgs, mp3s, photos etc. HELP!

First off, have a MacBook, 2.4GHz Intel Core Duo w/4GBs of RAM OS 10.5.8
I followed what I thought were proper procedures to change the name of the Home Folder from "macbook" to "rocki"
I followed the instructions at Mac OS X v10.6 and earlier: How to change user account name or home directory name
For Mac OS X 10.5 or later
    1. Enable the root user.
    2. Log in as root.
    3. Navigate to the /Users folder.
    4. Select the Home folder with the short name you want to change, and rename it just like you would rename any folder. Keep in mind that the shortname must be all lowercase, with no spaces, and only contain letters.
At this point I skipped steps 5 & 6 Since I already had a user named the name I wanted "Rocki" I thought I didn't need to do this. So went onto Steps 7-9, and NO everything was NOT there.
    5. Use the Accounts pane in System Preferences to create a new user with the Account name or Short Name that you used in the previous step.
    6. Click OK when "A folder in the Users folder already has the name 'account name'. Would you like to use that folder as the Home folder for this user account?" Note: This will correct the ownership of all files in the Home folder, and avoid permissions issues with the contents.
    7. Choose Log Out from the Apple menu.
    8. Log in as the newly created user. You should be able to access all of your original files (on the desktop, in Documents, and in the other folders of this Home).
    9. After verifying that your data is as expected, you can delete the original user account via the Accounts pane of System Preferences. At this point I skipped step 10 b/c nothing was there as usual.
    10. Disable the root user.
All my data and settings were not there. So I went back logged in as Root, navigated to the Users folder, and saw that there were two folders, one said "macbook" even though I previously just named it and there was also another folder named "rocki" there. Seeing two folders and wanting to return back to normal I deleted that "rocki" folder, I had just created, and logged back out of root and logged back into the only user I had, which was also named "rocki" which is the admin and the user that had all my files and settings originally before I tried to change the name of the home folder. And no change, everything is gone and missing.
To clarify, originally, I had a home folder named MacBook and a user named Rocki. Everything was cool and worked great! But I wanted to change that home folder name to match the user name. Whoops!
What can I do to go back to normal?!?!?!!?!? Please help me!! I'm so screwed. If I can't go back to normal, how do I find all the missing files and what not?!?
    Thanks so much in advance!

  • Need help in distributing Master Folder (all my original pics), Aperture Library, Aperture Back-up, Vault and Time Machine

I have a desktop iMac and three external HDs. One HD called Aperture Library (2T) now has Aperture Library, Time Machine backups and Master Folder, which is where I put my RAW files of pictures I want to keep. A second HD called Aperture back-up (1T) has another large Master Folder. This was created a long time ago when I was using Lightroom. I plan to transfer pictures on to HD Aperture Library > Master Folder so I will have 1 Master Folder. A third external HD called Vault (1T) now only contains my Quicken b/u.
I have not made a vault yet for Aperture, because I am in the process of exporting files from Lightroom and bringing them into Aperture 3. What a mess, especially because I was not able to use my photo apps (Lightroom or Aperture) for a few months and forgot  the do's and don'ts. Please help me organize this stuff while I have the time and motivation. Greatly appreciated.

Note that Masters need only be backed up once (but to multiple backup locations) and that backup should happen immediately after copying to the hard drive from the camera card, before involving Aperture or any other images management app.
Time Capsule is an ongoing regular-routine backup process. Image originals instead need irregularly timed backup, once.
IMO referenced Masters make far more sense than building huge managed-Masters Libraries.
    • Hard disk speed. Drives slow as they fill so making a drive more full (which managed Masters always does) will slow down drive operation.
    • Database size. Larger databases are by definition more prone to "issues" than smaller databases are.
    • Vaults. Larger Library means larger Vaults, and Vaults are an incremental repetitive backup process, so again larger Vaults are by definition more prone to "issues" than smaller Vaults are. One-time backup of Referenced Masters (each file small, unlike a huge managed-Masters DB) is neither incremental nor ongoing; which is by definition a more stable process.
Managed-Masters Libraries can work, but they cannot avoid the basic database physics.

  • Date format in Master Folder not consistent

Tonight, I found some old cell phone pics from 2 years ago sitting in a folder on my desktop (was never imported to iphoto). So I went ahead and imported them. In iphoto, the newly imported old pics went to the correct locations (amongst the 2009 photos). That's great. But, when I go to those photos and hit "reveal in finder," I notice that the original files have been copied into today's folder, as if the pictures were just taken today. I was hoping they would go into the folders from 2 years ago where they belong. What gives?
Also, I don't know why, but the date format in my Master Folder just got screwy. When I do column view, one column will only have the years. So for 2011, it says I have 24 folders. Of those 24 folders belonging to 2011, 23 of them have actual dates as their name (eg: "July 26, 2011" or "February 16, 2011"). However, one lonely folder simply has "08" (meaning "August"), and when I click on it, it reveals the dates of the month within August 2011 as separate folders, so folders with digits for names indicating the date of import (eg: "18" or "23" or "25"). So those cell phone pics from 2 years ago that I just imported today are showing up in the folder reflecting today's date. Again, what gives???

There is no correlation between the placing of files on the HD and the Events in the iPhoto Window and there hasn't been for three versions of iPhoto now.
There is no support for user acess of the files within the Library Package. It's not designed for that. There's also no need for it. See below for more.
FWIW, current versions of iPhoto use folders based on the date and time of import. Some earlier versions based it on the date and time of the photos. Even earlier versions used date and time of import.
Simple tip: Don't change anything in the iPhoto Library Folder via the Finder or any other application. iPhoto depends on the structure as well as the contents of this folder. Moving things, renaming things,, deleting them or otherwise making changes will prevent iPhoto from working and could even cause you to damage or lose your photos.
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:   You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
There's a similar option in Outlook and many, many other apps.  If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running:
For users of 10.6 and later:  You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation  which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu.
Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and 10.5 Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
Show File:  a. On iPhoto 09 and earlier:  Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.    3.b.
b: On iPhoto 11 and later: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • Rename master "file name"

Is there a way to rename the master file name?
Currently, the only way to do this is:
    1. Import the files into a folder first and rename the files. Then
    2. Import the rename files into Aperture.
    or
    3. Delete files from aperture but do not empty
    4. Recover these files from the trash. Rename them.
    5. Import them back into Aperture.
This is a pain in the * process.
    Any other ideas?

One of my favorite OS X tools is "A Better Finder Rename" - (http://www.publicspace.net/ABetterFinderRename/index.html). I used to have my own Applescript to rename, but this ran circles around mine.
Before Aperture, I'd import to a folder, do a simple culling (via Bridge), then rename everything to my conventions (D05_01322.DCR, etc).
If you want to import directly from a card reader WITH renamed images, you can try this utility as another method. Yesterday I used it to do a simple experiment to allow a Master file to be renamed BEFORE importing into Aperture:
    1. Be sure to open your preferences and set the "When camera is connected, open:" to "No application".
    2. Mount your card reader with card you want imported.
    3. Select the files you want renamed, then open "A Better Finder Rename" and select to Change "only the file name".
    4. Inside Aperture, import the renamed Master images with your personalized names.

  • Renaming Master files

In the release documentation it mentions that you can rename the Master Files(not referring to naming versions, but actually renaming the master file) in version 1.5. Does anybody know how to do this? I can't seem to find any mention of it.
    thanks

Well they've kinda almost maybe fixed it in 1.5.1. If you relocate the images out of the Library it will rename the files as well as rename the file name inside of Aperture. Here is where it gets funky. It will not rename the folder and all associated information within the Aperture Library. If you consolidate the images back into Aperture it comes up with a notice stating the the images will be moved back into the Library and will be renamed to their original name, but the file name within Aperture (not within the package) shows the new filename, not the original. Go figure. You would think they could simply get all the related info to change names also....

  • Moving folder on windows server: system password

At work I work on a mac, but our files are on shared windows network drives. There's one perticular drive which causes our mac users problems. It doesn't happen on all folders/files, but on some of them the following happens.
I try to move a folder to another location, but then suddenly my mac asks for the system password. I fill that in and press ok, but nothing is moved. The folder is still in the same location. This only happens om certain folders and the funny thing is: when I try it on of the following days, the problem for that folder is gone and I can move the folder to the folder I wanted it to move. But in the meantime there are other folders which can't be moved.
Support - being not into Mac strangely enough - says it's a Mac problem and I should update to 10.7. But that's not the sollution. Also because colleagues of mine who work in other office don't have this problem. It happens only to me and my colleagues at the place/office where I work. The windows server is at some place else so everything goes via internet.
I keep insisting it's some kind of permissions thingy. Support says it's a Mac thing. What can be the problem and how can I make it clear to them that is ISN"T a mac thing?

By the way, I noticed that with folder I can't move within a SMB share, those folders I also can't rename! I can move it's content but not the folder itself. Not on a Mac but also not on a  Windows machine. I've created the folder on my Mac desktop myself. Then moved it to the SMB Share. Then I can't rename it and I can't move it. Have done this procedure several times and most of the time it works ok. But every now and then I stumble on a folder which wont move within the SMB share and in those cases I also can't rename the folder. The problem isn't that there is a file within open by me or someone else. It's like the SMB share seems to think there's some file open while there isn't. But that would be weird anyway, cause a folder can always be renamed even if a file in that folder would be open? Can someone shed some light into this problem? What could cause this bug? I know now it isn't my Mac's fault (which the windows fanboys of Support seem to think). As the folder can't be renamed/moved both on a Mac and a Windows machine. What could be the problem?

  • Can I/How do I Rename the Folder Where All my Cataloged Images Reside

I have migrated all my images from an old W7 system to a newer system, and successfully built a new PSE catalog on the new PC.  Now I would like to rename the folder where the images actually reside.  How can I do that, PSE-wise?
I've found some options to move the PSE Catalog, but I don't think that's what I want - I want to move the media, and rebuild the catalog (and thus abandon ship on the old one).  Is that possible?

You have to export copies, and you can specify the resolution in the export dialogue. But the easiest way to provide high-resolution copies for your client is to give them full-sized JPEG images. Changing the resolution number will have no impact on the quality or the resolution. If you want to send them low-resolution images, then resize them to something like 800 x 1200 pixels. Again, the number in the resolution box has no impact on the quality. But you will have to export the copies in two export operations because you can't export two different sizes at once. You don't have to wait for the one export process to finish before you start the other one.

  • Can't rename a folder in Windows 7 - receive error message

When trying to rename a folder in Windows 7, I get a "Folder In Use" message saying that the folder or a file in it is open in another program.  This is untrue as I don't have any other programs open.  I even rebooted the computer and tried again
and it gave me the same message.  This has occurred more than once and it's beginning to drive me crazy.  Do you have any suggestions as to how to fix this problem?

    Hi,
    Please use the
Process Explorer to check which process keeps your file in use.
In addition, you can try to rename the folder in
Safe Mode to see the result.

  • Can't see anything in external drive after renaming a folder

    Hi all,
I can't see anything on my external drive after renaming a folder. I have the drive set up as a Windows drive with access through the volumes folder (I had to transfer  large amount of files from a PC and have it be readable on my MacBook Air); I read a FAQ to set it up a few months ago and it has been working fine since then. I saw the same issue come up with a PC HD on a PC, but the solution was for a PC. I don't see anything else like that in the support community (or if it's there, then I'm not searching for it the right way). There is no partition on the drive and it still shows as having the same amount of data written on the drive as before the accident.
    Many thanks in advance!
    anj

If you upgrade the your router, it would be the firmware that will be upgraded. For more information regarding upgrading the firmware, try this link.
For your external drive, you might need to map the drive again with a different name.
    Hope this helps.

  • Cannot find photos in iPhoto master folder?

    Hi there
When I first bought my Mac I imported a photo library from an external hard drive into iphoto. I cannot find the files in the master folder?
I can see and open all the photos in iphoto.
There are files in there for all the most recent imports to iphoto but not the original photo library import from when I was setting up my new mac.
Would really appreciate any assistance with this - cheers

Please explain (remember we only know what you tell us
I cannot find the files in the master folder?

This is not clear at all?
First off you should never be going into the Masters folder - you never need to and doing so is dangerous
see this user tip for details on how to access your photos if that is your question

  • Need help joining one master folder to multiple 1:n detail folders

I'm trying to query a master folder with two detail folders. Both master-detail joins are 1:N.
Discoverer keeps giving me results with duplicate records when i try to do this, which is a fan trap I think?
How can I get around this? I need all 3 tables to be joined.

i need to do left outer joins from the master to both detail tables and combine the results.
The query I basically tried was:
    select m.summaryText, m.dateFiled, d1.extraComments, d2.location
    from reports m
left outer join comments d1 on m.id=d1.id
left outer join extraData d2 on m.id=d2.id
This still gave me duplicate records in the results. How can you join all three and merge them without duplicates?
    Thanks for trying to help...
