Renaming old photos

I am trying to rename  some old photos in lightroom but I get thismessage:  some photos will not be renamed as they are missing or not writable.
the photos are not missing and I can work with them in the develop module. Can anyone help?

I would caution to hold off on renaming these outside of Lightroom even though you now know you can as it could create a bit of a mess on the Lightroom side.
A couple of things come to mind to cover:
First... when unexplained things are happening rebooting a Windows system is always a good idea. In this case if you reset the read only property and Lightroom is not cooperating I would certainly suggest doing this as part of the troubleshooting.
Also -- if they were marked as read only they would have an actual check mark in the properties read only box. If what you saw was the box being colored in but not acually a check mark that property may have been in an unknown ( or null ) state rather than actually read only. This is easy to confuse and might mean the problem lies elsewhere as they were never read only.
How did the photos get tagged as read only originally and could they possible not be the same ones that Lightroom is seeing? ... or were they copied off of a DVD/CD?
Could the folder ( or a parent folder ) be marked as read only even if the files themselves aren't. Same way to check... Right click and go to properties for the folder.
Are the files on your main C: drive?
Could this folder be in the file tree ( or area ) of another user besides the one logged in to Windows? If not you may not have permissions for that user. Does the logged in user have Admin privileges? If not you may not have authority to rename or change properties.

When I rename a photo why can I not find it doing a search?  The photo obviously keeps its old name even though it has a new one>  IPhoto 09

Thanks, that makes sense.  If I do a search in IPhoto I find it.  I have 6 grand children and also have had my camera for quite awhile and it starts file names over again after 10,000 pictures. (I don't have all these on the computer) but now I have some files with the same name  ie  img_4   and img_4
    Thanks again for your help!!

  • How to rename incoming photos?

New photos come from the camera with Nikon numbers.  When loading the next batch, they over-write the old photos with the same numbers.  How can I rename these files, either before import or after?

Terence is right about the damaged library.  Create a new, test library by launching iPhoto with the Option key held down and run your import test again.  If you can export successfully that will confirm that your original library is damaged.
if that's the case make a temporary, duplicate copy of the library and try the three fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - delete  the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your Home/Library/Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache files that are located in your Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding the the Option key.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
    Fix #2
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #3
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Replacing a old photo with a new one.

Using iPhoto right now, would this be something that is easy in Aperture, will switch tomorrow if it works better. A few years back I imported some of my photos off of a photo cd that came with my prints. Now I am scanning the negs at a higher resolution than they supplied on the photo cd. My question is.. is there anyway to replace the old photos with the new photos so that all of my faces, places, dates, keywords etc. will remain intact?

Also make sure you've renamed the new file exactly the same as the old file, same case, format, etc.

  • I have a 3g iphone and I need to know how to delete old photos from my phone!! I need the space but there is no way to delete the pictures!! Help!!!

I have a 3g iPhone and I need to know how to delete old photos. Need to free up space and there is no clear way to delete these photos!! Can someone please let me know how to get rid of these pictures!!!! Help!!!

There are a number of ways to delete pictures from the Camera Roll.  One is to open Camera Roll in the thumbnail view, tap the arrow button (top right), tap all the pictures you want to delete, tap the Delete button ant the bottom.  Photo Library pictures are deleted by unchecking Sync Photos on the Photos tab of your iTunes sync settings, followed by syncing your phone.

  • In the last 36 hours my photos have jumbled within various albums. Random photos have attached at the end of an unrelated album, old photos have appeared again on Recently Added, some photos are missing but still on "collections". No date order

Within the last 36 hours my photo albums have turned into a real jumbled mess. Random photos have appeared at the bottom of my Recently Added album. In most cases it's a copy of a photo that was taken months or years ago so now it appears twice.. 200 random photos have appeared in an unrelated album.  Some photos are missing completely. The date order is correct in some places and then it goes back and forth over the months and years. The "collections" appears to be okay.  This morning when I went into the photo app About 50 photos that were permanently deleted 3 months ago reappeared on the Recently Added Album which  I deleted again.  if  I delete these irreplaceable photos from the unwanted album it will delete the photo completely. Help please - this is so annoying and frustrating. I hate to think when I turn the iPad on tmoor row what else will have changed .

    Quick Update:
I usually have my Mac laptop up with Messages running on it.  As you know, it will receive the same messages you send/receive on your iPhone.  I thought all my old photos would be there too, but they have all disappeared as well except for the last few.
Messages is supposed to archive all old photos to  a directory called ~/Library/Messages/Attachments.  On my mac, this was a 0 byte file that was created back in Jan 2014.  As a result, none of the old photos got saved on my Messages app either.  I looked at a Time Machine Backup and it has been the case since September (no earlier backups available).  So, it's unclear how long this issue has been going on for my Messages app and how related it is to my iPhone problem.
In any case, if any of you use Messages, you may be able to recover your photos in that directory provided it didn't get trashed like mine did.  I moved the file and created a new Attachments directory.  Upon relaunch, Messages started properly storing new photos in there again.
Either there was a really terrible bug in the Apple software or something malicious has happened.
P.S.  I'm running OS 10.9.5 Mavericks.   There is a thread of people with this problem on Yosemite here:
No pictures are shown in Message om Mac
This seems like a pretty seriously terrible bug.  I will be talking again to AppleCare on Wednesday and I hope they can escalate this.

  • What is the best way to scan and sort old photos in iPhoto

What is the best way to scan and sort old photos in iPhoto?  They do not have digital dates.

    Hey Chicago Sue,
Once you scan them and have them on your desktop. You should use Automator and assign the common IPTC tags to the images, so that when you do import them into iPhoto, they get recorded.
Here is an example of an action in Automator:

  • How can I retrieve old Photo Stream photos from a lost iPhoto Library?

My laptop was stolen and with it an external drive that had my iPhoto library.  I had an old backup and when I opened the backup and turned on Photo Stream, I saw all my old photos appear again!  After a short while, it was removing old photos from the photostream and replacing them with newer ones.  I'm now missing months of Photo Stream photos that I really want back.  I tried creating a new library and enabling Photo Stream to try to capture those missing images, but I am not able to see anything older than Oct.  I could really use some help if somebody knows a way to get those memories back...
    Thanks
    -Rob

    I had an old backup
What kind of backup? Do you have a Time Machine Backup of your complete system from the time before the laptop was stolen?
To restore the Photo Stream images from that time you need to restore the folder
    your home folder /Library/Application Support/iLifeAssetManagement/Assets
This folder contains the PhotoStream pictures that were part of the PhotoStream at that time.
To restore this folder from TimeMachine, open a Finder window showing this folder, make it the active window, and then enter TimeMachine. Go back in time in the TimeTunnel, till you see the correct date. Don't restore to the library but to a folder on the Desktop.

  • I updated the photos that share with Apple TV but old photos display during music

I updated the photo file that shares with Apple TV, and they display correctly when I play the slide show, but when they play slideshow with music playing it's the old photo file. How do I get the new photos to display during music? Thanks

Not sure what you are trying to do, but the photo is just cached.  You might try restarting ATV and see if that will foruce a cache relaod.
What is it you did?  Did you update an image, cover art, photo stream?  It could also be that what ever you updated it not what is being displayed.  For instacne if you updated something in iPhoto, but are pointing to Photostream that will not have an effect.  Same problme if you are looking at cover art while the music is playing.

  • How do I add old photos from my MacbookPro into my photo stream to view on my iPhone

I'd like to add old photos saved onto my MacbookPro into my photo stream so that I can view them on my Iphone.
I have tried selecting 'share' when looking at the photo in iPhoto - and then selecting to share it to my photo stream but i can't see it in the stream on either of the devices.
Is there some sort of delay before uploading?
    Please help. Thank you

That's what I was doing but they just don't seem to show up at all. Even when I drop and drag them from the iPhoto into the stream.
Is there a limit on how many photos can be in the stream at one time?
yes definitely. 1000.  THe oldest are deleted. THis may be your problem.

Jailbreaking cannot be reliably undone - even if you're only eleven.
Note also, that jailbreaking is not to be discussed in these discussions. Don't be surprised if your post gets removed.
You should also note that the Apple's Terms of Use require that you need to be at least 13 years of age to post here.

  • HT4906 How do I get old photos off iPad, in the photo photo app? I dont want the pictures and they are saved on a disc, trying to just clean up old things..

I dont like iPhoto, and just want the old photos taken off of my iPad, that must of transferred from my computer. I will tap on the photos, and edit, but then the delete button is fuzzed out so I cant delete them??

Photos that were transferred from your computer via a sync are removed by syncing again.
Start iTunes on your computer and connect your iPad. Select your iPad in the left column of iTunes and select Photos in the right column. Scroll down and deselect the albums you no longer want on your iPad. Then click on Apply. The albums will be removed but will remain on your computer.

  • How can i remove my old photos

how can i delete my old photos..

Photos in your camera roll or photos you've synced from a computer?
In your camera roll, tap on the pic and hit the trash icon.
Photos that were synced from your computer, you would need to unsync them.

    Restopre from backup
    To restore from backup see:
    iOS: How to back up
If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.
You can redownload most iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
    Also,
    - If you used PhotoStream then try getting them from your PhotoStream. See that topic of:
iOS: Importing personal photos and videos from iOS devices to your computer
