Renaming question

I use a custom rename sequence on import "IMG_2{Filename number suffix>>} to 'fix' the camera's limit of 4 digits for the count. I forgot to change this to 3---- after hitting number 29999 and now am trying to rename those files. They are no longer in absolute sequence (there are gaps from culling). I can't find any way to do this in batch rename as there are no options to just take the last 4 digits of the current file name.
Any thoughts?
Thanks,
E

You didn't mention they had been worked on. If all the data you need is actually stored in the sidecars (they don't store everything), you can re-import after you do this.
I'm not really sure how to do exactly this within LR. Maybe it's possible and someone else can help you.

  • Big Big batch rename question

Hi folks. I've seen a few batch rename questions before, but I think this one's a little different.
I have a long (8 minute) movie, one big piece in a FCP timeline. For reasons unimportant to this question, I need to break it up into about 50 little 10 second movies. I can do that easily but using the cutting tool and cut cut cut away until I've split my one item in the timeline into 50 pieces. I can then drag them into a bin. Of course, each one is called "final" (that's the name of the movie). I can select all those clips and make them independent clips, which now allows me to rename them.
Problem is, they need to be renamed to a bunch of unrelated words. ie "plane", "building", "sky" etc. So a simple batch sequence that names them 1, 2 ,3 is not what I'm after.
I have an exel file with a single column that lists all these names in their proper order. So far, I have successfully:
exported a batch list from my 50 clips in the bin that are named the same.
replaced the file names in that batch list with the names from my column of names
reimported that revised batch list into FCP. Their properties are all correct, ie the right name is with the right in and out points etc.
I'm stuck now where those clips have a red line through them. How can I relink the 50 clips in the timeline (which are all still called "final") with their properly named counterparts in the bin?
batch capture of course isn't a solution since there's nothing to capture.
Hope that's clear and thanks in advance for any ideas.

If you're running a 32 bit version of windows try Batch Rename
A really great piece of freeware that is easy to use.
There are also options within PS's batch dialog that allow you to do the same thing, but I find the above app so much easier.
I really miss it on my Vista 64 box...

  • Batch file renaming questions

Beyond knowing that such a facility exists, I have no knowledge about Bridge scripting. Can it be used to modify the standard batch file rename process in Bridge?
I would like to rename my Canon Raw images with the date (from EXIF Date Digitised) and a sequence number that resets to zero for each new date. This sequence number should accurately reflect the order in which the images were taken (via the time component of EXIF Date Digitised). I would also like to process all files in a subdirectory structure at the same time.
The standard Bridge batch rename process does not offer a counter that resets for each new date, nor does it seem to allow processing files in more than one folder at a time.
Can this be done? Do such scripts already exist? Alternatively, are there any commercial software utilities that can do this? I am already aware of a freeware solution called DIM but am a little worried about putting my faith in something with no guaranteed ongoing support - a concern that would be addressed by a script I can control myself or a properly supported commercial solution.

Hello? Hello? Is there anyone there?

  • File renaming question plus shortcut keys

I do a lot of work with renaming files for an archiving project. I was wondering if anyone knew:
a.) the shortcut keys to skip to the next word when dealing with a file name with underscores without jumping to the beginning or the end. (i.e. somethingsomethingsomething.something). I know that hold down option while using the arrow keys will jump to the next word separated by spaces, or periods, but not underscores.
b.) why underscores cause words to be recognized as non-breaking elements? It seems like any non-alpha numeric character should still be read as a break, imo.

If you didn't also know, you want to navigate back and forth through the finder windows the shortcut for that is: command Left bracket / Command Right bracket Thought you might like to know. I also use the key board a lot in place of the mouse/track pad.

  • Yet another Applescript file renaming question...

    Hi all,
Well, having been a full-time Applescripter for five years at Apple, I thought it would be easy to dust my chops off and write a simple script to get a file name from one folder and paste that name onto a file in another folder.... but I guess 15 years of no-scripting has proven too much of a challenge to my aging brain... and I am on a time crunch to get this done for my client.
SO, here is what I'm hoping to get help with.  I have no doubt it is pretty simple.
File "A" is in a folder.
File "B" is in a different folder.
I need to GET the name of File A and use it to rename File B.
Can one of you youngin's take 30 seconds and help an old dude out?
    Thanks a bunch,
    matt

    Niel... almost there.
The script works perfectly (with me placing the path instead of just the folder)... thank you so much.
One extra thing though... I didn't realize that the files are different file types (jpg and psd).
So what do I need to do to change the name without changing the file type?
    THANKS again!
    Matt

  • Lightroom Bulk Renaming Question

Occasionally I need to rename files after import. I see how to access the bulk file rename from the Library | Rename menu after selecting the photos. However it's not clear to me how to do the type of rename I need. Here's an example.
Current Filenames:  MyName_2005-06-022_019 where 019 is a sequence number that varies for each photo (e.g. 019, 020, 021, etc.).
    Needed Filenames:  MyName_2005-06-032_019.
I need to do this for all photos in the folder.
It would be very easy to do if there were something like a LEFT and a MID function that would let me select a particular portion of the Filename (e.g. FILENAME(left,16) then followed by the character I want to change). I don't see how to do this, however with the existing options. I could do this with other software, but then LR wouldn't be able to find the new files.
    I am using LR 3.5 on Win7.

    Hi, 99jon.
When I do it on import, I also convert the files to DNG. But sometimes I need to do it after import as in the above example, that doesn't seem to fit any of the renaming options. Do you know how to do that type of rename, e.g. one character change in the middle of a filename? Or, is there a tutorial on how to use the rename options? I haven't found one yet, and I wonder if they have more capability than may seem apparent at first.

  • File renaming question

I need to add four characters into the middle of numerous filenames.  I have tried Batch Rename in Bridge CS3 but did not have any luck. Tried macros with photoshop, and also can't do it.  The file names would look something like this:  11-100.jpg  and I need it to be 11_VX1-100.jpg. Then the next file name would be maybe 20z-100.jpg and I would need it to be 20z_VX1-100.jpg.  Someone suggest using scripts. I do not know how to use scripts. Can it be done? and How do I do it?  Thanks!

Here is a script for Bridge that will allow you to do this..

  • Batch rename question

    Hi,
I need some help with a non-standard  batch rename.  I have a series of images that look like the following:
    M5200101
    M5200102
    M5200201
    M5200202
The  files are named based on a fish tag # and a 2 digit sequence (last 2  digits and they go from 01 to 12 typically but it can vary.  The problem  is that I need to add an underscore between the tag number and the last  2 digits.  (E.g. M52001_01 etc.)  Does anyone have a solution to this?  Prefereably freeware?!
    Thanks!

  • Rename question - I only want last 4 digits of original name

The camera I have now generates names such as "PICT1122" I have some files from a camera I no longer have that generated names with 7 numerals ("P1122333") after a letter.
My naming system is comprised of "YYMMDD_1122" with the 4 #'s being the camera generated number.
This works with my current files in LR renaming option by choosing "numeral suffix" as the option. When I choose this option with my older files though, it pulls all 7 numerals, and I just want the last 4.
Is there a way to do this? Or can someone suggest a way to batch rename that would get rid of the 3 numerals I don't want?

Yes, I have used the Import from Camera script in Bridge awhile ago and forgot about it. I have also used Image Ingester which would work.
I am not going to buy a whole program like ACDSee just to rename. And I do plan to rename before Importing into LR. Although I have already imported some, changed the file name to the 4 numerals instead of the 7 and I was pleasently surprised to discover that LR DID recognize them. My thought is that it is just when they are moved, that they are not recognized.
I would bet there is also a way to do this with Automator, just have to find someone who knows how.
    Thanks for the suggestions.

  • Renaming question in Bridge CS3

When renaming, Bridge automaticaly renames a tif and jpg of the same name, the new name. For example, if a tif and jpg of the same photo are named 1.tif, and 1.jpg, and I batch rename these 2.xxx, both files will be renamed the same 2.xxx. Which is great. But I want to throw the original CR2 Raw file in the mix. So there will be three files of the same photo in the folder. I want to rename all three files of the same photo the same file name, not counting the extention of course.
How in the world do I do this, or can it be done at all?
    Thanks for any help.

I think I understand. You're renaming your files and the name includes consecutive sequence numbers? And you want the GIF, JPG, and PNG (for example) of a particular image to all have the same sequence number in the name? (frog1.gif frog1.jpg frog1.png)...where all three files are otherwise identical photos of the same frog.
If the above is true, you are correct, Bridge will rename/renumber the files consecutively with each GIF, JPG and PNG getting a different number. That's a tough nut to crack without doing one of two things:
    1) Rename all of the GIFs, then rename all of the PNGs (resetting the number in the Rename Files dialog back to "1" each time), etc.
1.1) This will work great if there are GIF JPG PNG (for example) of every image. The nut gets harder to crack if sometimes an image is just a JPG w/o corresponding GIF and PNG (for example).
    2) A second choice is to write a script.

  • MoveTo file renaming question

    Hi guys
If you want to change the case of a file name eg...
    filename.txt
    to...
FILENAME.txt (using moveTo to do this throws an error, as the file already exists)
...is there any way to do it that doesn't involve adding arbitrary characters first, or actually making a copy of the file?  eg...
    filename.txt
    to...
    FILENAME_arbitrary_chars_here.txt
    to...
    FILENAME.txt
    Cheers guys

I'm not clear on where this is coming from but if you can rename a file, thenwhy not rename it twice, first to change it to something else, then to change it to the desired name.  Another option might be to copy the file data, delete the file, and write the data to a new file with the desired name.

  • A (final) catalog renaming question

    Hi.
I've just found the following tip on how to rename my LR4 catalog:
(First of all look up in LR under Help /system info the actual location and the name of your catalog.
    Then close Lightroom.
Go to the folder and change the name of:
    LR 4 Catalog.lrcat
    LR 4 Previews.lrdata
    to
    YourName Catalog.lrcat
YourName Previews.lrdata), which I'm sure works well. However, on my PC the path is
    "Library Path: C:\Users\Ole\Pictures\Lightroom\Lightroom2Katalog\Backups\2011-11-08 2218\Lightroom2Katalog-2-2.lrcat",
that is, I suppose only a part of this will be the actual catalog, as I also have another catalog called
    "Library Path: C:\Users\Ole\Pictures\Lightroom\Lightroom2Katalog\Lightroom2Katalog-2-2.lrcat
OK, this seems confusing, but to put it simple, I want to keep and rename the first of these, but I'm not quite sure which parts of the name I should change, ie how many back-slashes will have to be kept with the new catalog name. pe
Yes, I see I messed this up a bit. Hope you will be able to help, though.
    Cheers,
    Ole K

    Hi Ole,
As long as you have one root folder encompassing every image you want to keep (such as probably "My Pictures"-folder) it is sufficiently organized.
You will move this folder (As-Is, with every weird subfolder!) to your new computer, along with your real working catalog and previews folder (the latter for convenience - you can let your new computer recreate the previews, but it may take more than the hours of 1 night, depending on the size of catalog and chosen preview size).
Should you have "?" for missing images and folders in LR on your new computer you will reassign the top root folder and everything should be spick&span.
I am not quite a fan of the *big electronic drawer* for REALLY everything, but depending on how much you shoot you should be well served e.g. by a date-folder structure with one folder per month (or even year?). 3000 images in one folder is without any problems, even in bug-times as in LR4.0.
But as dj_paige said, it is not worth while to reorganize the past.
Just start with such for new imports, let LR create these destination folders inside "My Pictures" during import. Then spend your time for other organisation. Ask yourself and the ones around you who may inherit your image data: how would you search for pictures several years/decades ahead? That is how you create dumb or smart collections, assign keywords and fill the title- and caption fields. No need to do much for location keywording any more if you feel comfortable with the map module.
Here is where I have my LR-knowledge from: Victoria Bampton's "The missing FAQs": http://www.lightroomqueen.com/books/adobe-lightroom-4-missing-faq/
    Have fun, Cornelia

  • Using iView and iPhoto together

I know I'm not supposed to rename photos etc outside of iPhoto; so I haven't. I like the ease of use (auto-start when a camera is connected, sharing over Bonjour/Rendezvouz etc) but batch renaming 0f actual photos, adding comments etc are all done better in iView (I have the pro version due to several update offers).
    Can they be run simultaneously?
Can I share a catalog(ue) as easily as with iPhoto?
Is there a way to rename etc then dump back into iP, preserving some kind of structure - I only have about 2.5GB so far, but ...
I have read several threads on similar matters (eg Frederic Rasio, "iPhoto alternative?", 04:29am Aug 14, 2005 CDT) but none really answer my questions)
    Thanks in advance
    Mark

First, read my post in this thread: Old Toad, "using iphoto with iview" #1, 02:19pm Aug 15, 2005 CDT.
They can be run simultaneously but I would be very careful editing with both. I' did it once on a test library as my other post mentions. iView is so powerful and you can do so much that there may be a high potential of really messing up the iPhoto side of the pair. iView would still work but iPhoto may not. That's why i keep the two separated and use iPhoto primarily for books. With available plugins iView can do everything iPhoto can except make books and the KB effect in slideshows. Slideshows are easier to generate in iPhoto.
In response to your renaming question, my other posts describes how I do that first in iView and then import those photos into iPhoto. You'll just have to work out your own work flow. You might consider an external HD - see A Tale of Woe and a Lesson to be Learned.

  • Question - rename pdfs based on bookmarks in the files

I am totally new to javascript (have done some visual basic and other old-school programming).  I am scanning years of paper filing to searchable pdfs, and want to automate one important part of the process.  I suspect that what I need is fairly simple if you know javascript, but for me would be a big learning curve.
What I would like is a script that will
look at all the existing pdfs in a folder that I can specify each time the script is run
each pdf will already have one or two bookmarks (some will only have one; none will have more than two)
rename the file, using the first (or only) bookmark as the filename
change the create-date of the file, using the second bookmark as the date
save the file(s) in a new subfolder under the original folder - folder name unimportant
If the date is too problematic, then it is optional (the bookmark would be 'dumb' text, and the date format wouldn't be guaranteed the same for each) .
I've never run a script before, so please give (or point me to) the real basics, like, where do you save a script and run it from there -- all the ignorant questions!
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

Acrobat JavaScript cannot do most of those things. It has no access to foldera, and cannot rename files. There are two creation dates (on on the file like any other file, one stored inside the file) and it won't do either of them either.

  • Question about renaming file names

After spending many hours organizing my iphoto library, deleting duplicates, etc, it is now where I want it. So I have two questions.
    1. Is there a downside to updating all the file names to the Event Name as long as this is done in iphoto? (I was thinking this might be helpful in case anything gets jumbled in the future)
    2. If it is advisable to do #1, is there a way to do this to the whole library in bulk or do I need to do it event by event?
    Many thanks for any advice.

It is not possible - you can not change file names in iPhoto - you can add titles and when you export use the title for the file name - but file names within the iPhoto library will always remain as they were originally imported
Old toad uses image capture to bring photos to his hard drive and then uses a third party package to batch rename them to the proposed event name in a p=folder with that event name - then if you drag that folder to the open iPhoto window it creates an event with the folder name and the file names are what you set
