Renaming Songs

I've done a search on this topic and read a good deal of the posts about this topic and I haven't found an answer on my own, so I'm hoping someone can help me.
I've downloaded songs, both off the internet and from CD's and the names won't change. For example, I downloaded a song from the internet... When in the iTunes Music FILE FOLDER it will be the name of whatever song, say "Hey Jude" by the Beatles. So I then go to the iTunes program, go to FILE, then "Add file to library", and add that file. After that it will be in my library. I double-click on the song to play and it will play... BUT, the song title changes to "untitled". I stop the song and RIGHT CLICK on the song, then go to "Get Info". The information comes up and I go to the Info tab. In this tab, it shows me the title, artist, album names, etc... But in the title it says "untitled"...SO, I change it back to "Hey Jude" and click "OK". In my Library, the song is back to "Hey Jude" again... BUT, you know what happens when I click on the song to play? It plays, but the song title goes back to "untitled"... What the **** is wrong? It won't stick with the name I give it!
So, does anyone know what I should do?

I've gone through all the files that are being renamed, and all of them have the "read only" box UNchecked.
I did a search for discussions w/ the topic "Renaming Song" and others similar to that... One of the discussions talked about how WMP will "watch" the files being entered in to the library... And that it is WMP that is automatically changed the names back to the original. So, I opened up WMP, when to TOOLS, then OPTIONS, then to the LIBRARY tab. In that tab their is the subject of "Automatic Media Information Updates for Files". In that discussion I read one person said to UNcheck all those boxes to keep WMP from changing all your file names when you try playing them in iTunes. BUT... the thing is, when I went to WMP and went to the Library tab, none of those freakin' boxes were checked!
So, I thought if WMP has something in the program that automatically changes your file info, then maybe QuickTime has something like that too... I couldn't find anything in QuickTime like that, so I'm still lost on why iTunes is changing the names, and still lost on what to do about it.
Any suggestions?

  • HT2905 Deleting songs, duplicate songs, and renaming songs

On my iTunes I am unable to delete any songs from my iPhone, nor am I able to select the 'Display Duplicates' or Delete them either. I can't even rename a song!
Things I have tried for deleting songs:
    Shift+CTRL+Delete
    Delete button
Looking under settings on both my iPhone and iTunes for an option to enable the above problems in the opening
I have deleted the songs in both the downloads folder that my songs go to, and from the iTunes music (This deleted the songs from that but not my actual iPhone music).
Right Clicking the song and looking for delete option (no such option exists under the 'Devices' portion of iTunes)
Things I have tried for duplicate songs:
Right clicking the song and looking for delete option (again no such option exists)
Tried clicking the 'Display Duplicate' option but iTunes has it blocked and I am unable to click it (faded grey colour)
Things I have tried for renaming songs:
Right clicking the song>Get Info>Info and I can't click on anything it's all blocked
Double clicking song title still unable to edit the song like I used to be able to do in previous iTunes
    Triple clicking song title
Hoping someone can help me with these issues as this is very frustrating,
    KelseyP91.

If your iPhone syncs with iTunes you need to tidy up in iTunes, then sync, not try to edit the content of the iPhone manually within iTunes.
I've written a script called DeDuper which can help remove unwanted duplicates. See this thread for background.
If the device has duplicates, but iTunes doesn't, then you can swipe and delete all duplicated items directly on the iPhone, then sync with iTunes to put the songs back onto the device. One of the iTunes build seem to have the potential to leave orphaned tracks on the device which are then not cleared up by further syncing.

  • Renaming songs and artists on 10.5

So my friend burned me a mix cd and I was trying to rename songs and artists because the names and such did not come through when i imported the cd to itunes 10.5. In trying to do so it is no longer apparently as simple as just clicking and waiting for the box to allow me to pop up and change the title/artist. Is anyone else having this issue with 10.5 or have any resolutions to this?? Also I am no longer able to just simply click on the Music category on the left hand side bar nor am i able to click on my playlists..
    What the heck iTunes???!!!!

hey there. all you have to do is right click on the song, and then click "get info". when that box pops up, you go up to the tabs and you click "info". by doing so, you can enter all the information you need to, just as you would before.

  • Automatically Renaming Songs

My iTunes automatically renames songs for me. For example, I just imported a new CD yesterday. I renamed the tracks from Track 01 (etc) to the names listed on the CD case. But when I click on them to play or change more information, the names change back to Track 01, etc. Can anyone help me stop iTunes from doing this?

hmmm...yeah, that's a problem because I don't know how to strip the tags off of them.
Try this: simply convert one of the songs to mp3, this is just to see if it works. Go to edit > preferences > advanced > importing and set it to mp3. Right-Click on the song and "Convert Selection To MP3". This will create duplicates of those songs (one in AAC and MP3), and see if the MP3s can retain the information.
NOTE: these MP3s have degraded sound quality because you've made a copy of a copy, though some people can't detect the quality loss. Anyway, this is just to see if it works.
If it still doesn't work, then strip them of their ID3 tags as I relayed above. Then try to see if they can retain the info this time.

  • Renaming Songs Incorrectly By Accident

HI, sorry about the weird topic title but I'm not sure how else to describe my problem. In iTunes 11.1.3.8 when I want to rename songs or whole albums (doesn't matter whether it's the artist name, track name, album name etc), then if I incorrectly type something or spell something wrong by accident, it saves that and I am unable to delete it and put in the correct spelling.
For example, say if I type in an artist name as BEYonce when I obviously meant to type Beyonce, I am unable to then type it in the correct way, it will always default to the incorrect spelling. As soon as I start typing the first few letters of B, E and Y then it will default to them as capitals like in the incorrect version I showed.
This is really, really annoying as it means you have to be extremely careful what you type and make sure you have the correct spelling EVERY time, otherwise if you make a mistake then you are stuck with this. This is ridiculous, is there a way to fix this?
    Thanks for any help.

Type something like _Beyoncé and then remove the leading character when you are done, or copy and paste the correct text from somewhere else.
Fix all the incorrect versions in your library, close, then reopen, and iTunes will start offering the correct version in future.

  • ITunes Renames Songs

iTunes keeps renaming songs when I play them. Unfortunately, it is not naming them the right title. I have tried renaming the using "get info", but the next time the song plays it gets automatically renamed. Does anyone know how to "lock" the file once I rename it or have iTunes recognize the right song titles?
    iTunes   Windows XP

I think you may have to actually rename the song file. There may be an easier way to do this, but here's how I would do it. Go to your library and find one of the incorrectly named songs, right click on this song and choose "Show Song File". When the file opens, find the track you want to rename, hover over it so it's highlighted, then go to the left side of the box and choose rename--a blinking box will form around the song name--if you've got track numbers on the song make sure you keep these when you rename it. Type the new name and hit enter. Close iTunes and reopen it and see if the new name sticks this time.

  • I renamed songs in playlist but the original files aren't renamed. How can I sort out the originals?

I could really use some help. I'm trying to record an audio book of my second novel. I had about 300 audio tracks from recording the book in iTunes. I put them all in a playlist. Then I went through and delected the tracks that were no good from the Playlist and renamed the others so they were properly sorted by page number.
Unfortunately, I did not realize that 1) renaming tracks in a Playlist does not rename the actual original tracks, and 2) when I click "Show in Windows Explorer" not only is it the original file names, but they are mixed in with all the other tracks that I had deleted from the playlist.
Is there any way for me to isolate the tracks that are in the Playlist? I need to pull all those tracks out so I can import them into a music editing software program. I'm worried that all my time was wasted renaming the songs and now I can't figure out any way to group those tracks to import into another program.
Any advice would be much appreciated!
    Thank you.

When you look at your iPhone, are you looking in the Music app or in the iTunes app?  Be sure you are looking in the Music app, and look in the Songs category.  If your songs are not here, you may want to try syncing your information again through iTunes.  To do this, uncheck "Sync Music" and then click apply or sync in the bottom right corner of iTunes, and then recheck "Sync Music" and then click apply or sync again.
    I hope this helps!

  • Batch rename song titles and/or change case

Importing cd's makes a mess of my song title format.
The most common problem is a mix of cases: Proper Case (Capital for each new word) is the most common, but sometimes it's all lower case or all upper case. Especially the last one requires a lot of typing, title by title. Using an external renaming program does not affect the titles within iTunes. Is there a way to do that?
Similar problem often happens to classical music. Some cd's mention the composer and/or performer in the title field, followed by the 'song' (track name). I want to delete the composer/performer or transfer them to the appropriate fields. Can I do that in one 'batch rename' action within iTunes?
    Thanks,
    Wim

  • ITunes Randomly Renaming Songs

Ever since purchasing an Apple TV, my iTunes randomly renames a handful of songs by putting the track number in the song name. There doesn't seem to be a pattern to how it chooses which songs to alter... sometimes it will alter an album that I just listened to, or it will alter an album that hasn't been touched for months (eg. Christmas music).
    Any thoughts?

iTunes prefs -> Advanced - Importing.
Uncheck *Create filenames with track number*.

  • Amarok renaming songs?

I think Amarok is renaming all my songs. All my songs were in a directory called Music. Inside they were all sorted by artist. Now it seems that Amarok has moved all artists starting with A into a folder called A. It renames all my song titles (which were Artist - Title) into song# - title. It seems to have started very recently, within the last couple days.
Is anyone having a similar problem?

As bender said above, the only way AFAIK , is to do it manually by right clicking the song/s and choosing to organize.. I don't think there is an option that causes amarok to do it automatically w/o your consent. I don't think it will rename your songs, only the directory structure, but I am not 100% sure about this. By any chance do you have a script running that may cause this, or maybe you used another media player, or maybe even have a dual boot running windows/iTunes? I doubt it, just trying to rule some things out, because if this happened to me I would be right there w/skottish puking.

  • Itunes renaming songs

Hello, I converted to apple products a few years ago (sorry if this has been asked). I tried searching for the answer and I have applied every fix I thought was available. I have about 11000 songs in iTunes. When I buy a song from iTunes and it is named something like ALBUM NAME (ITUNES DELUXE VERSION), I rename it to just ALBUM NAME as I'm very crazy about the way my music is organized. After a few days, I see the name reverts to what iTunes named it. I am on a PC, removed music from the iTunes folder and placed it in a folder for the artist/band by itself, unchecked any "updates" from Windows Media player and from iTunes, etc. No matter what I try, it reverts to the iTunes name. If I click on a song, it reverts to my rename and splits up the album. I have to click on every song so it regroups it back to what I named it. I've been purchasing a lot of music via iTunes, so it is getting annoying. Anything purchased from Amazon gives me no trouble. I imagine it has something to do with the iCloud or some tag.
How can I get it to stay renamed? I don't want any other external program to do this for me as I don't want to run the risk of messing up 11000 songs. Thank you for your time, help, and suggestions.

I did have that ticked 'turned on' when it renamed my songs. Is there some way to use Itunes to name the songs back to the way they were?

  • Renaming songs and videos

I recently lost the drive that contains all of my songs and my video files for my collection. Thankfully I have everything on my 5th Generation iPod. I know how to transfer all of the songs and videos off of the iPod and onto a new computer. My question is when you look at the files they are all named with a series of 4 alpha numeric characters. Is there a good way to mass rename these files? With all of my songs and vidoes there are over 9000 files and going through and renaming them manually would be a very time consuming headache. Any tips on how I can get these renamed?
Also on a side note is there a place on the iPod where it stores playlists so I don't have to completely rebuild them?

    Hi again, desbest,
    Thanks for providing those details.
First off, try resetting your iPod. To reset an iPod:
Press and hold the Menu and Select (center) buttons together for 5-10 seconds.
Thia may take several attempts. For more effect, try connecting your iPod to a power source, like your computer's USB port (or a wall charger, if available).
If this only happens when using your iPod (or accessing its songs through iTunes), then I would suggest that you try restoring your iPod to factory settings.
For instructions on how to do that, check this out:

If your iPod only has music playback problems with your iTunes Store purchases, then check out the suggestions from this article:

  • Renaming Songs. Some work, some don't.

Ok, so in my itunes, i click on get info, then go to change the the name of the song, (seeing as some of them are incorrectly named) and it will only let me change on some and gray's out others. Anyone else have this problem and a solution?

I've been having a similar problem which is making me nutz. When I insert a CD to rip, I-tunes accesses GraceNotes and occasionally gives me a track list which is wrong--the play order is messed up, for example. Not to worry, I think, I'll rip the CD, then go to Library and physically rename the songs. I rip, then go to Library and rename them, but then when I select them again in the Library, they revert to their old names. When I look again at Get Information for a song which has reverted to its old name, I find that the number of tracks field is now empty and I have a conglomeration of Zeroes in the Comments field. What is happenin' here? How can I rename these songs? Thanx.

  • Renaming songs on itunes

I have several cd's that I have imported into itunes, that are copied cd's,and it tells me the names for songs cannot be found online. Now I have track listings for these songs,is there a way I can rename them to their correct name instead of having them as just track 1 track 2 and so on?

Right click on the track you want to rename and choose Get Info then the info tab. Fill in the name and other details in there. At the bottom press Next to move on to the next track you want to name and OK when you are done: Add Song Information, Lyrics, and Artwork to My Tunes
If you want to update multiple items with say the album name or artist name where it's the same for them all. Click on the first track in the list hold down the shift key and click on the last track to highlight the selection. If you want to change track information right click anywhere in the selection and choose Get Info, you'll be asked if you want to update multiple items, say yes. In the box that appears fill in the information you want to add and choose OK.
