Renaming Styles

Good morning Robohelp HTML community.
Today's subject is the renaming of styles in the Robohelp (v9) HTML CSS.
After developing a magnificent work of Robohelp art I am now looking to clean up my styles. Some styles have funky names that are are used in many hundreds of topics. I want to change some of these funky style names, however, find that Robohelp does not automatically update each paragraph in each topic. Changing the style name has the effect of applying a default style to the paragraphs since they can longer find the style in the CSS.
Can anyone suggest a workable method to change the style name in the CSS and retroactively apply that style to each applicable topic paragraph.

You need to use a multifile find and replace tool. For this purpose the one built into RoboHelp will suffice.
Your Find should be class="oldname"
Your Replace should be class= "newname"
Make sure you take a backup of the project first.

How does renaming styles work...or not?

I wanted to change my RoboHelp style names from the hodge-podge that has grown up over the years to something cleaner.
I expected that when I changed the style name in the Styles dialog, RoboHelp would obligingly scan through all the html topics and change the old style name to the new style name.
That did not happen. The name is changed in the list in the Styles dialog and in the Styles and Formatting pane, but remained the same in the HTML.
1) I assume this is the intended behavior and that Robohelp somehow keeps track of old style name that corresponds to new style name? Is that the way it works? Or did I miss a step somewhere that would have triggered the scan + replace I was expecting?
If the names are not replaced in html, I don't want to rename the styles, since that would mean I would have to mentally translate between old name and new name every time I wanted to work directly in html, an impossible situation.
But assume that some day I will have plenty of time and actually be able to go through the entire project and change the style names both in the html and in the UI:
2) Does that mean I would need to use find and replace to change all the style namess in html?
Just trying to figure out how it is supposed to be done.

LOL, nahhh. What could possibly go wrong?
I once heard of a gentleman that was demonstrating all the wonderful new features of his new word processor. To demonstrate, he showed his guest how with a few deft clicks and keystrokes, all A's were changed to E's. And with another few clicks and keystrokes, he could easily revert by changing all the E's back to A's. (Including, of course, all the E's that were E's to begin with. )

It could be helpful to others to leave the original post and
then post a reply with the solution. You never know if someone else
will run into the same problem and need the answer, which is not
posted (nor is the original problem, since it looks like you edited
that post). Then flag the answer post as the answer to the

Managing Styles in InDesign CS4 Books

Hello,
I am trying to tackle the task of managing about a dozen separate marketing documents as an InDesign CS4 book. One of the most frequent problems I run into is diverging styles (e.g. font family and size) inside the individual files.
Now, I understand that CS4 books should synchronise lots of characteristics from the "format base document" and, as I interpret it, also styles and their definition. For some reasons that does not seem to work here.
Specifically, I am frequently encountering problems with missing font files (which is correct, I just thought I could re-synchronise the files in the book with the modified styles from the format base and I'd be done?) and styles that have changed. Pressing the "synchronise book" button does not seem to do the trick.
Does anyone have experience with dealing with this issue?

More than heading 3 in Split on Style when importing Word doc?

Hi
I hope that you can help me. My Word document (Windows XP)
has Heading 4 style.
When I import the word document into RoboHelp 7 HTML, the
Split on Style box only has Heading 1, 2, and 3. Why doesn't
Heading 4 show up? Can RoboHelp 7 split topics on Heading 4 or more
styles on import? If so, how?

I am so confused! I was wondering, dyhw, if you
figured out this situation?
I also have a Word 2003 document that has a fairly clean
template and 4 heading levels: Heading 1, Heading 2, Heading 3, and
Heading 4. The Word TOC generates just fine.
When I import into RH 7, I tried with "preserve heading
levels" both off and on; "convert TOC" both off and on--no luck.
What is happening is that although Heading 4 topics are created in
the TOC, there is no separate HTM file--the topics are appended to
the Heading 3 (book).
On import, the "Split on Style" dialog lists in the "Create
new topics based on" checkboxes only H1, H2, and H3--as well as
TOC1, TOC3, TOC4, and BodyText (???). Where is Heading 4? And what
does "Rename style (F2)" do? I tried to use that to rename TOC4 to
Heading 4, but that didn't seem to change anything.
I am *very* confused as to how to import my Word doc and
actually see generated Help--and I haven't been able to apply my
skin, either--but I guess that is another topic in the forum...
Any help, guidance, etc. will be gratefully accepted! I have
looked at the topic referenced in this thread and couldn't see
anything listed that I haven't already tried.

I would use the menu to 'Insert/Pages/Section' (foreward?), drag it to where you prefer in the thumbnail view on the left, rename/style it accordingly and fill it up.

Group names not shown in Win-Taskbar anymore

with the Tab-Groups-Feature the came a very clever invention: the group-names were used for naming the FF-Task in the Windows-Taskbar.
like the format: [groupname]:[Tabname]
but since FF9/10 only the Tabname is used to name the Task ,-(
can that be changed with any trick?
is there an option in about:config or a config-file to use the "old" Taskbar-Renaming-Style?

I am not entirely sure, but this menu should change that preview in your OS:
Control Panel > Taskbar > Taskbar Properties > Jump Lists change the number from 10 to the number of tabs

Importing Word Documnet

Hello everyone....
Myself Nagaraj, new user of Robohelp 7.0. Basically I am
converting word document in to Microsoft HTML (.chm file) using
Robohelp.
Till 3rd step its working fine but from the 4th step till end
i am not getting. Can any one help me out. please
1.Select File > Import > Word Document.
2.Select a Word 2007 document from the required path.
3.Select the items you want to convert, and click Next.
4.The following are optional in the Import Word Document
Wizard: Split On Style dialog box:
Copy File To Project Folder Place a copy of the document in
the project directory. If this document contains shared information
and is included in more than one Help system, you may want to clear
this selection including the path with the name of the Help
document in the HPJ file.
Add Document As Read-only RTF Select if you do not want to
make this document editable. This is useful for documents
containing information that is shared in more than one Help system.
Rename Style Rename a Word style.
5.Click OK. RoboHelp switches to Microsoft Word and the
Import Options dialog appears.
6.Select the styles that you want RoboHelp to use from the
Create New Topics Based On list.

By the way, for you and other subscribers to this forum, who may consider using MSWord to produce ePubs, this may be of interest.
I asked Liz Castro earlier in the year her views on producing ePubs from MSWord and this is what she said (she gave me permission to reproduce her reply):
"You can use MS Word to create a simply formatted ebook (either EPUB or Kindle) but you have to be careful to do it just the right way—that’s why I still plan to write a book on just how to do that. For example, if you generate a table of contents with Word for Windows, and then use Amazon’s own KDP to create the Kindle version, your book will have a TOC. But unfortunately, it doesn’t work if you create the TOC in Word for Mac. There are a lot of little details like that. The capability is (mostly) there, but it’s not always obvious.
And you can use the HTML that Word generates to create an EPUB file—but you have to write the XML files yourself or use Sigil or some other concoction of half-baked tools. InDesign of course, does all that for you, with code that’s well formed, flexible and not hard to edit.
But it’s still true that Word is the program that’s already on most writer’s computers, and with which most writers feel pretty comfortable. InDesign costs a lot more, and feels harder to use, at least for the beginner. If someone has both programs, I would recommend using InDesign every time. If they don’t, Word can be a low-cost, last resort.”

Text Colors in Boris 3D

I cannot control colors in Boris Title 3D. Open Boris Title 3D. Click Options and get the window to enter text. Enter text. Highlight the text. Click Style Palette and get the Style Palette window. Click Color. On dropdown, select zColors.clr. Just above the count item, are three icons: Add Style, Rename Style, and Edit Selected Style. The last two are grayed out. Scroll down the colors on the right (two finger scroll doesn't work) and click on AquaBlue. The two grayed out icons are now active but nothing else happens. Double click AquaBlue. Same result. X out of colors and click Apply. In the viewer, click video. Background is black and text is white. What to do? Thank you

First reset the Style palette. Go to the third tab on the left, the color tab. Make sure text fill is set to color. Use the eyedropper to suck the color from the style palette.

Relationship of Fireworks and CSS?

In using Fireworks to design web pages for a site can the common elements for text and layout be converted to a CSS external sheet in Fireworks?

Fireworks is a Web graphics - layout/design - prototyping application. It is not a code authoring application. (Dreamweaver, on the other hand, is a very good code authoring application.)
So, yes, you can export CSS from Fireworks, but it's very ugly and you will probably have to put in more time and effort figuring out which style is which, renaming styles reasonably, and sorting into an external sheet than you'd put in if you just wrote the external sheet from scratch in an application that is better suited to the task.

Can't figure out how to rename css style in mx

Hello,
I can't figure out how to rename css style in mx. I have the
style selected in the proprety inspector. Is there supposed to be a
rename option at the bottom of the same dropdown box? There is
option to edit style and a few others in same dropdown box... but
no rename option. Please be specific... I have looked it up on the
internet... but still cant find the option.

When I rename a paragraph style can I automatically apply it to the paragraphs using the old style?

I am using RoboHelp 8.
I want to rename a paragraph style from Body to Bodytext (because the new css we have to use uses Bodytext).
When I rename the Body style to Bodytext, all my body text switches to the Normal paragraph style.
Is there no way to automatically apply the Bodytext style to all paragraphs that were using the Body style?
I am trying to avoid having to apply the style to each paragraph individually which would take forever.
Any help would be very much appreciated.

Sorry but there isn't an automatic way.
You will need to fix this using a multi-file find and replace tool.
If you look at the HTML you will see something like <p class="body">.
Search for that and replace with <p class="bodytext">
Make sure you create a copy of the project before you start.

Copied and pasted a div tag but cannot rename it on style sheet. any ideas?

I am new to Dreamweaver so after paying someone to basically build be a template, I tried to midify it a little by copying and pasing a div tag to a lower section of my page.
Probe is, its entitled "content-box-top" ... If I make adjust the width or height etc it also changes it to div tage at the top of my page in which I duplicated from.
That all makes sense. So I tried to rename my dupoicate div tag "content-box-bottom". But it doenst appear in the style sheet so I can't make my modifications.
What am I doing wrong and how could this be accomplished? Thanks to all who can help.

First off, <div id="names"> need to be unique on a page (used only once)... so a <div> id name cannot be reused on the same page..
Second, just because you rename a <div> does not automatically add/change anything in your CSS.
If you want 2 <div>s to be identical, then assign them each the same class="wearethesame"... or whatever class you want to create.

or in your CSS file, just copy/paste the CSS for the first #div and rename the pasted version to the same name as the second <div>. This will work just fine.. but it's not an automatic function.

CSS Questions :: Renaming Class Styles & Replacing Styles Globally

1) Renaming Class Styles
I have a large website that I redesigned over a year ago and now manage. I've been doing some housekeeping and attempting to rename some of the class styles I've applied to different parts of each page.
Problem: When I change the name of a class style, the style no longer is applied to the text. I've tried this in both GoLive CS2 (8.01) and Dreamweaver CS3. It's the same with both. They both allow you to change the name, but then the text loses the connection to the class style.
How can I rename the property (or style rule) without losing the connection to the text it is applied to? To go through and have to reassign the newly named styles to each section of each page would be an enormous undertaking.
2) Replacing Styles Globally
Is there an easy way to delete a style and chose a new one to take it's place globally?

For instance, if you want to change very instance of a class to a different name, find it in the classes list and rename from there, which should update any pages using the class, and update its name in any external CSS files. Really useful for global changes, but definitely one of those things worth making a back-up of the whole site first.
For some reason when I do this it breaks the formatting style.

This does make sense.

Apple Script to rename files based on a style

Hi I want to rename many files so they can uploaded to my website.
In order for them to be uploaded they must be formatted in the following way.
Firstname=Lastname=lab=summary
I would input the firstname, lastname and summary for each file as that info is unique. Every file name's style will be the same. the first letter capiatlized in Firstname and Lastname and "lab" in non caps. there is also a "=" between all the words, no spaces.
Is it possible to make an applescript program where I can drop the files in to the program and have a form open asking me to complete the FIrstname, Lastname and SUmmary fields while filling in the rest?
