Renaming the 5GHz wifi channel

Hi
I've had issues connecting my iMac to the HomeHub5 for months and eventually stumbled across some advice which suggested turning off the sync between the 2.3Ghz and 5Ghz, then renaming the 5GHz SSID.
I've done this and it seems to have fixed the issue, but I've no idea what the implications of this might be for my general wifi access around my house. I assume there's a good reason why there are two frequencies?
I now have two seperate wifi names in the house and appear permanently connected to the 2.3Ghz one.
Any potential issues?

You need 5GHz adapters to use the 5Ghz signal - not all PCs will have a 5Ghz adapter.
because 2.4Ghz is getting very crowded in areas, the 5Ghz range can help a lot to stop interference , otherwise no real issue
to look at the implications - if you could post a screen shot of xirrus we could see what potential interference you may have and advise on a channel change
Run Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector
Download and install
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to copy the program across to the faulty PC
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and install the program.
You will now need to take a screen shot and copy that back to the working PC and attach the screen shot in a reply on the forum here.
If you do not have another PC - do you have a phone connected to the internet - can you photograph the result and post the image in a reply
http://www.xirrus.com/Products/Wi-Fi-Inspector.aspx
( the site now appears to require a business email, and does not allow webbased emails like gmail, hotmail or yahoo etc )
Use the links below
http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_download/fid,77196-order,4/download.html
http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/Xirrus-Wi-Fi-Monitor-Download-99109.html
Then run and install the program - on a wireless enabled PC/Laptop
if you get an error - You will need to have NET Framework installed for the WiFi Inspector to function.
On windows 8 - (i do not have windows 8) but, it would appear that, When you first try to run, you may get a message that .net framework is needed, and included in that message is a link to download/install.
Run the program
A user guide is available here
http://www.xirrus.com/cdn/pdf/xirruswifiinspectorguide1-2-0
post a screen shot of the program running.
if there are a lot of networks showing can you click on "networks" top lefthand area - so we can see all the network information.
post which SSID name is yours, its located in the list, under network "Adapter Name" (1st column)
Note:
For a reliable (or robust as the Xirrus user guide says) wireless connection you need a signal of about -70 dBm or better. "A desirable signal level for a robust Wi-Fi connection will be green".
note: the signal level is a negative number, so for example -88 is worst and -40 is better
To post a screen shot of the active window.
Windows XP
Hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application (Start> All Programs> Accessories> Paint) and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file.
Vista or Windows 7
you can use the "snipping tool" which is found in Start> All programs> Accessories> Snipping Tool
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/how-to-use-the-windows-snipping-tool/
Windows 8
you can use the snipping tool > Open Snipping Tool (From the Windows 8 Start Screen, type "snip" and press enter.
>Press the Esc. key.
>go back to your Windows 8 start screen - Swipe from left or press Window Button
>Press Ctrl+PrntScr button to use Snipping Tool

• Aspire Z3-615 can't connect to 5Ghz WIFI

Hello everyone, i'm just curious. I currently have 2 wifi lines, one normal 2.4 and a 5ghz WIFI. However, my computer, the Aspire Z3-615 on windows 8, isn't able to read the 5ghz WIFI. My network adapter is qualcomm atheros ar956x 5ghz. I've been browsing around the forum, and am pretty sure that my adapter is a single channel, which i guess means it can't read 5g :/ My phones are able to connect, so i'm just wondering if there's any way to make it so that the computer can read 5g? Thanks for the help :-)

In the past, I have always just added a USB network adapter to a computer that needs 5 Ghz. If it says b,g,n.......it will only work on 2.4 GHz It must say a,b,g,n in order for it to work on both 2.4 GHz and 5 Ghz. So you have to read the product descriptions carefully and make sure you see "a,b,g,n" http://www.amazon.com/b/ref=dp_bc_5?ie=UTF8&node=13983791

• Windows 8.1 problem with 5Ghz WIFI

Hello,
Since a little while, we have a new wireless ADSL router with 5Ghz Wifi (and 2.4 as well), it came with our new Internet connection.
However, the 5Ghz WIFI works for a while, and then it stops working, most of the time I can still see the SSID, but the connection is limited. Once in a while the SSID totally disappears and I can only see the 2.4Hgz one anymore. So at first I suspected
the router was the problem and I reset it to factory settings. Seemed to work for a little while, but then the problems returned.
Then I noticed the problem was only occuring on my 2 Windows machines (Windows 8.1 and Windows 8). On my Windows phone, the 5Ghz WIFI works just fine. I checked this at the time that I couldn't surf anymore on 5Ghz WIFI on the Windows tablet and laptop,
and at the same moment on the Windows 8.1 phone it was still working fine.
So I googled, and found that I should replace the drivers with the Windows 7 drivers. Also that seemed to work for a short while, but now problems have returned. I checked the drivers in the Device Manager, and they are still the correct Windows 7 drivers
from Atheros.
What could this be? the 2.4Ghz WIFI always works just fine on any machine, it's just the 5Ghz.
I have dual boot with Android on my tablet, and I haven't noticed any problems there.
Thanks!

You mention Atheros - do both machines have Atheros wireless? What brand/model
Windows computers?
This sounds very much like the problem folks with new Surface Pro 3's are
experiencing. Please post some details - also which router?

• Home Hub 5GHz WiFi going faulty?

Just bought an iPad Air 2, partly because it has 802.11ac on the 5GHz band and should work with my homehub. Was great with connection at full speed for first couple of days, but tonight I have noticed that the speed is getting limited to 30Mbps max on the Ookla Speedtest everywhere, even straight in front of the router (my Infinity speed is 58Mbps and I was getting full unlimited speed over 802.11ac until tonight).
Plus I have noticed that the HomeHub is now making a significant electronic buzz/hiss when doing a speedtest on it from the iPad. You can 'hear the data' being streamed
In comparison, my iPhone on the 2.5GHz band using 802.11n speed tests at >40Mbps still from the same speedtest server, with no buzzing/hissing noise from the homehub. My PC also has no restriction (connected via Homeplugs).
That would indicate to me that the 5GHz WiFi Access Point has a problem - do you agree? Anybody else experienced such a problem?
We had power blips last night - could that have damaged the Homehub? (I have got it on a surge protector however).
Solved!

Another thing.....
HomeHub 5GHz wifi set to 802.11ac - iPad Air 2 reports on Advanced Settings / Home Network Hub Web Page as connected at 130Mbps
HomeHub 5GHz wifi set to 802.11n - iPad Air 2 reports on Advanced Settings / Home Network Hub Web Page as connected at 300Mbps
Am I seeing an incompatibility between the iPad Air 2 & the Homehub, or a 5GHz Access Point that has gone faulty when trying to use 802.11ac?

• IPhones in the 5GHz space

Hi,
I have an 11ac router that offers 11n over 2.4Ghz / 5Ghz and/or  11ac over 5GHz.
I also have 2 iPhone 5Ss and and iPhone 6 in the house.
If I have them all use the 5Ghz WiFi will this mean that everyting, including the iPhone 6, will run at the slower 11n speeds and to get best performance for the iPhone 6 it should be the only device on 5Ghz to ensure it runs at the higher speed 11ac?
Also, as we enter the house will the phones automatically pick up the longer range 2.4GHz 11n signals and not the 5GHz signals.  Is there any way they can be made to automatically move to the 5Ghz signal once they pick it up?
Or should I combine the 2 frequencies by having the same SSID for both and let the phones decide which frequency to use all of the time?
Thanks
D.

Yes, that is the most sensible method.

• How to change the WiFi channel of a printer?? (Photosmart 7520)

How can I change the default / permanent WiFi channel the printer uses to broadcast for wireless printing?? It currently always changes to the same one as my router. Photosmart 7520Windows 7Very technically capable.

You can't.  The router sets the channel and the printer only connects to the router using whatever channel it is broadcasting on.  Don't worry about the printer crowding the broadcast channel it's only your neighbours routers on the same channels as you that you need woory about.  And to be honest if you managed to change your printer's channel to a different one from the router then it wouldn't be able to connect to your network anymore anyway. Chris

• Does the iphone 4s use 5ghz wifi

I wan't to use my 5ghz wifi on my iPhone 4S but it can't see the SSID for my 5ghz network. The specs page for the iPhone 4S states it uses:
802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi (802.11n 2.4GHz and 5GHz).
Does anyone know why this isn't working?
BTW - My iPad works just fine on the 5ghz network.

No, it does not state that.
The 4S does not have the 5GHz radio.

• Disable BT-WiFi operating on the 5Ghz Band.

With the Home Hub 4, 2 further SSID's are broadcasted. They are:
BTWifi
BTWifi-with-FON
Both of these SSID's provide the same service. I am assuming BT done the "with-FON" to show they have partnered with FON or some other reason.
For me. I think it should be disabled on the 5Ghz. Firstly, the user won't have a significant speed increase, due to it being limited on BTWifi anyway. It also has limited range as well. So it may not reach the user. Also when it does broadcast the BTWifi it should only broadcast one, BTWifi or BTWifi-with-FON. Which ever they want.

That's correct, this is why I posted the link to a service guide for the laptop. The card is listed in the manual so no BIOS modding is necessary. There are 2 compatible adapters but Intel is better than Broadcom..

• WRT600n is VERY slow on the 5GHz channel....

I have a WRT600n and a WGA600n, The router and the gaming adapter seems ok at the 2.4GHz speed, but it is VERY slow at the 5GHz speed (the reason I bought this so I can do wide 40MHz for my n)
I do not know if this is the router or the gaming adapters problem!    Can anyone direct me?    This is really driving me nutd as I want to get my HDTV streaming....
Best,
TVO

I'm also experiencing this problem, although only on local LAN activity. In my test scenarios, I'm transferring a 700MB AVI file from a laptop located less than 8 feet from the router (connected with a WPC600N PCMCIA card) to a desktop (connected via Ethernet).
The 2.4GHz 802.11g connection holds steady around ~2.5MB/sec and has yet to fail the file transfer.
The 5GHz 802.11n connection can't break speeds of ~250KB/sec, and file transfers of anything over a few kilobytes always fail.
As I said, the weird thing about this is that in both cases Internet transfers are completely unaffected -- they fly by at top speeds. I bought this router and two matching network cards to move hi-definition video across my network, and it looks as though I've been lied to yet again by networking manufacturers. I hope that the comparison of my experience to yours can help shed a little light on the problem, but given the current slate of products on the market let's just say I'm not holding my breath.

• How do I change the 5 ghz channel on new Airport Express when extended from Time Capsule?

Hi there. My Airplay device connected to the new Aiport Express keeps cutting out.
The 5ghz connection on my Time Capsule is set to channel 48. I have a new Airport Express (with Airplay device) extending from the Time Capsule and when I use WiFi Scanner, it shows the Airport Express set to channel 157. What gives? Is there a way to change to channel 48 or does this not matter? I imagine since they're on different channels, they're not talking to each other or am I .
Thanks in advance for any help.

I've managed to change the 5gHz of ther Airport Express that's extending the network.
As mentioned, main AE is on channel 48, and I now have the 2nd AE on channel 36 - which means my TV can now see the network. Also tested speed via my mavbook air on the same 5gHz network as it all seems OK (A while ago I spotted my Time Capsule was on the same channel 48 as main AE and throughput was abysmal! Bad enough to make me reset the TC to factory defaults and setup again - which is when the TC got channel 120).
Anyway, the fix... I changed the 2nd AE to create a wireless network (instead of extend), and manually set the channel to 36. I then set it back to extend, and it seems to have kept channel 36.

• Verizon G1100 Quantum Gateway router spurious 5Ghz output channel

Anyone seeing this situation? About a week ago I installed a new G1100 Quantum Gateway router without any problems. I have a desktop PC with a 5GHz WiFi adapter card and a Kindle Fire HD which use channel 149 at 5GHz. I also have an IBM Thinkpad using the 2.4GHz channel 11. The Kindle has a WiFi Analyzer app which allows me to view the activity on both 2.4GHz and 5GHz. Until about two days ago the WiFi analyzer and the Wireless Network Connection display on the desktop PC showed only one signal in the 5GHz band. Since then they both show two identical signals on channel 149 which have the same strength but different identification info. If I change the channel it just shifts both signals together. I spent almost an hour with a tech on live chat yesterday. He "looked" at  the router and asked a lot of questions. He tried some things from his end with no change. He finally suggested doing a factory reset. I tried that today and still no change. I'm beginning too  think I have a defective unit. The spurious output hasn't caused any problems so far but I find it very strange.

Since I posted the original inquiry, I have talked with Verizon tech people twice with no resolution. The last person agreed to send me another router. After a week or so it had not arrived so I inquired and the customer service rep couldn't find a tracking number. A second one was sent out and as luck would have it both arrived within a day or two of each other. So then I had three routers. I put one of them in service and got the same result, two signals on the same channel in the 5Ghz band. I then plugged in the other router but did not connect the FIOS cable to it, just let it sit there by itself. My WiFi scanner on the kindle showed only one signal at 5Ghz for this router and two signals for the router connected to FIOS. I then swapped routers, connecting the single signal router to FIOS and  putting the two signal router aside. The WiFi scanner now showed two signals on the router which previously had only one signal at 5Ghz!!! The two signal router which was now not connected to FIOS still showed two signals also. Apparently, the routers initially have single signals when manufactured but FIOS software programs the device resulting in a different signal spectrum probably due to the security encoding algorithms utilized. By the way, depressing the factory reset button for 10 seconds or more does not return the router signal spectrum to a single signal. Also, I have not seen this characteristic in the 2.4Ghz band while using WEP encoding (my old laptop does not support anything else). The 5Ghz band uses WPA2.

• 5Ghz WiFi on E2500 stopped working

I had my E2500 with 2.4 and 5Ghz WiFis with different names working fine for months until yesterday when 5Ghz WiFi stopped working and I had to switch my PC back to 2.4ghz. When I go to the router page -> Status -> Wireless Networks the 5Ghz network shows an empty MAC address, Channel as N/A and Channel Width as N/A, while 2.4 has them properly filled. I've tried using different settings for the WiFi, but nothing worked. I also tried resetting the device and updating the firmware. How do I know that the 5Ghz interface is not defective and figure out the cause of the problem?
Solved!
Go to Solution.

Ensure the FW was updated correctly:
To safely update FW, I recommend doing the following: Download the FW file from the support site first.
1. Save router config to file first using IE or FF with all security add-ons disabled.
2. Factory reset the router with all other devices disconnected or turned OFF accept for 1 wired PC.
3. Reload or Update the FW using IE or FF. Just download the FW file to your local wired LAN PC.
4. Factory reset the router and then set up from scratch first and test with out loading the saved config from file. Check to see if any problems are fixed before loading the saved config from file. Sometimes you need to set up from scratch with out loading the saved config file. Just safer that way.

• Backup over 5Ghz Wifi

I picked up a new 3rd Gen Dual-band 1TB Time Capsule and have noticed some strange behaviour with the wifi and backup.
The first issue is only small. Sometimes my laptop (Macbook Pro, Mid-2006 2.2Ghz) doesn't always join the 5GHz network first, even though it is at the top of the Airport Network list in System Preferences. I also have the 2.4GHz network on there, which I usually get joined to.
The main problem is that I seem to have real problems backing up when using the 5GHz network from my Time Capsule. I can browse the TC in Finder and open the sparsebundle used for backups, but Time Machine struggles to mount the volume so my backups just fail. I have no issues with this on the 2.4GHz network though.
I have my TC set up as follows (running 7.5 firmware)
Wireless Mode: Create Wireless Network
Radio Mode: Auto (802.11a/n - 802.11b/g/n)
Radio Channel Selection: Manual (Automatic 5GHz, 6 2.4GHz)
Wireless Security: WPA/WPA2 Personal
I've copied the Console logs below. Any help of suggestions would be welcome!

Welcome to the discussions!
Can you tell us how far your computer is located from the Time Capsule? What about the number of obstructions, walls, etc?
It's a known fact that the higher frequency 5 GHz signals are absorbed by walls, ceilings and any obstructions much more quickly than 2.4 GHz signals. So, my first thought was that this might be an explanation for what you are experiencing.
If you have your computer in the same room with clear line of sight to the Time Capsule, that is another matter.
You might want to download Air Radar and use the Scan function at the lower right of the main window to get a good look at the signal strength on your networks. The "bars" at the top of your computer screen are not a very accurate indicator of the actual signal strength that you are receiving. Air Radar is not free, but there is a free trial period.

• Airport Extreme - Can't Connect to 5Ghz Wifi

Recently I purchased a AT&T MiFi device called a UnitePro. This device allows me to broadcast a a dual band wifi if wanted. It also allows one or both of those to be 2.4Ghz or 5.
After doing some research and discovering that the 5Ghz band can be faster, I wanted to connect to it from my iMac. I have been unable to do so since first attempting...
I have a mid 2010 27" iMac i7 which came with a built-in AirPort Extreme  (0x168C, 0x8F) wifi card.
So I have done a bunch of research on this issue and I think I understand the problem that I am having, however I do not understand what (if any) my solutions can be. It appears that when an AirPort interface is turned on, it listens for 802.11d beacon packets, and those contain what it called a regulatory domain field. Then the Airport driver uses the first valid regdomain setting it sees. In my case it is picking up a strong beacon from a neighbors house. The problem is that his router is set with a country code of ZW (Zimbabwe)! This my problem.... Zimbabwe's regulatory laws prohibit the routers to support channels above 13, or at least this one does, I don't fully understand it, but I get the gist.
So what this means is that I can not use my iMac to connect to my new router because quite simply the channels that 5Ghz broadcasts on are not even available.
I know this has been a topic of discussion in the past, but I couldn't find a good answer as to what to do. So... What can I do to get my 5Ghz network working?
Thanks in adavance!
Cheers

It sounds like when the Internet went down, the modem got "confused" and didn't remember that the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) was connected to it.
Please try the following:
o Power-down the modem, AEBSn & computers. Order is not critical.
o While the power is off, check to see if the modem employs a backup batter. If it does, temporarily remove it, and then, replace it.
o Power-on the modem. If it has one, press and hold the modem's reset button for at least 3-5 seconds. After power-up or reset, wait at least 10-15 minutes.
o Power-on the AEBSn; wait at least 5-10 minutes.
o Power-on the computer(s).
Your computers should be able to access the Internet (& access web sites) now. Please post back your results.
