Render and RAM Preview Skipping

Hi all-- I have a relatively simple project, just a paint stroke really, with a write-on effect of sorts that I created by keyframing the Stroke Color alpha (not with a behavior). Yet when I RAM preview or render to a QT, the result freezes and skips a few frames somewhere during the video.
It's not a playback issue; I can step by the video frame-by-frame and clearly see it pausing and then skipping forward.
Thanks!
Zak

MORE CLUES:
Camera Properties/Scale seems to cause it in my situation.
I just started using a technique of Camera scaling to control some of my shots (see http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2375595&tstart=15 for excruciating detail)
If I disable the keyframes of my camera Scale, RAM preview works as normal. If I then enable the scale change, RAM preview breaks as described above.
How odd.

i got render and RAM preview problems with after effects! please help me
when i started on a project earlier today the RAM preview was failing and it stoped making a preview after about a second, when i hit the RAM preview buttom again it continued to load and stoped again after a half second, and it continued to do that till it wasn't loading at all, just playing the same thing up even doe it haden't loaded the whole composition! BUT if i moved the (thing you see where you are on the timeline in need of a better name) it started loading a little more and then it stoped again.. so after alot of problems and moving i managed to make a RAM preview of the whole composition..
now the real problem: when i was done with my project and i was going to reender i did like this: i added my composition to the render queue, chosed my render settings and started to render, after exactly 37 frames it stoped and no window or anything poped up, the only thing that was telling me something was wrong was the render status, and it said: ''failed at 0;00;00;37'' that's not even a second! and BTW when i render after effects only uses 12% of my 6GB RAM memory.. i dont know what to do! i've tried other render settings but the same thing happens! can anyone help me?
BTW i'm swedish and only 14 so i might misspelled something..

Start here and make sure that you understand how RAM preview is supposed to work first:
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/424030
What version of After Effects? Have you installed the recent updates? What operating system? What kind(s) of source footage? Has this ever worked before? What other software are you running? Do you have any third-party effects or codecs installed? Are you rendering with OpenGL?
What are your Memory & Multiprocessing settings? Are you using Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously multiprocessing?

  • After Effects Rendering Problem and RAM Preview Problem

I posted a question about this yesterday but I thought I would repost it with more detail!
I have a restless issue here with rendering and RAM preview. I am simply trying to create a viral ad which uses the cloning effect I achieved with masking for my college coursework and I have completed the process of creation but I have ran into problems. The RAM preview will only play up to a certain point then it will just stop and this effects the final render because it gets to the point in the rendering where the RAM preview stops and then a message will pop up saying the rendering has failed or something? (Screenshots Below)
I have tried RAM previewing just one of the three videos I am using and it still stops at the same point.
I am using .avi files and have tried converting to .mov, .mp4, .wmv all of which didn't work.
I am using After Effects CS4 ver 9.0.0.346
    My computer specs
AMD SEMPRON processor 2.7Ghz (single core)
2GB RAM (I know its not alot ;))
    ATI Radeon HD 5600 512mb
    Creative audigy 2 sound card
    Windows XP Serivice Pack 3
It's quite urgent and I hope someone can help!
    Cheers!

With just 2GB of RAM, I'm impressed that you can generate that much of a RAM preview.  RAM previews use RAM. When they run out, they stop.
Have you tried rendering the clip using the Render Queue.  If so, does it also report an error at a similar point?  If it renders correctly from the queue, you're done.  If it doesn't, you probably have a corrupt source file.

  • I am getting an error message when I try and Ram Preview "

My Preferences settings in the the Memory & Multiprocessing section are.
    Installed RAM: 6GB
RAM reserved for other applications: 1.5GB
    RAM available  for AE: 4.5GB
    AE multiprocessing
    Checked Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously
Ram Allocation per background CPU: 1GB

Your available ram is completely inadequate for rendering multiple frames simultaneously to be used. Turn it off. Also, allocate an even number for ram to other applications. 2GB minimum. Unless you have 16 or more GB of ram turn off MP rendering. Unless you have a lot of free time to wait for AE to render frames and try to struggle along with limited resources upgrade your ram to some multiple of 4GB using MATCHED memory in 4GB increments.

  • Mac Pro has problems rendering and RAM previewing in Adobe AE

I've been using Adobe After Effects 7 and I have a 3g new Mac Pro. It's a great computer, really fast with Final Cut Studio Universal, etc. and when rendering sequences in FCP the program doesn't quit. BUT, when I'm trying to RAM preview or render a composition in Adobe After Effects the application will quit unexpectedly everytime. I found that it would only quit when the composition was over approx. 30seconds, but I've used an eMac that never had problems rendering much longer clips. The fact that the program quits after a certain amount of time makes me think it is an issue with RAM availability to the program, as in a conflict with the program, and the new intel-based Mac Pro. I've asked around on the Adobe website but there is no specific solution. Has anyone heard talk that the intel-based Macs or new OSX, are conflicting with Adobe applications, etc?

Mostly correct, Jim. Photoshop CS3 (UB) Beta is available for download and a time-limited license to CS2 license-holders. The time-limit is unspecified, but Adobe says it will end when CS3 is released.
All good reports the last time I checked on various fora.
(CS3 install does not overwrite CS2, so in case Adobe releases CS3 and pulls the plug on those time-limited CS3 Beta licenses, you'll still have CS2 to limp along with until you receive 3.)
CS2 seems to work fine on an Intel Mac, though slower because it's running in Rosetta. Heck, I'm using CS without difficulty, other than the slowness.
However, all that doesn't help the OP with AE, which isn't scheduled for a UB release until mid-2007, IIRC.

  • Issues with performance and RAM previews

Just did a major system upgrade from an iMac to a Mac Pro, and now I'm having an issue with performance...specifically with RAM previews.
When I try to do a RAM preview with audio, it grinds my entire OS to a hault (can't switch apps, or click on much of anything). It eventually clears up enough for me to stop the RAM preview.
So, I'm wondering if maybe my Memory & Multiprocessing settings might be off.
    Here are my system specs:
    Mac Pro
    2 x 2.4GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon (12 cores)
    64GB RAM
    ATI Radeon HD 5870
    AE CS6 (11.0.2.11)
AE is installed on an SSD drive and the scratch disk is an internal HDD.
Here are my AE Memory Settings:
    Here's my GPU Info:
Let me know if any other info is needed...

You are reserving far too little RAM for other software.
See this: "Performance tip: Don't starve your software of RAM."
(Also, I recommend going through all of these materials: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/543440 )
Regarding the SSD: Putting your application files on it means that applications load/boot faster. This is fine, but that benefit is just when you first start the application. If you put your cache files on it, then you get the benefit every time that something is read from or written to the cache---i.e., many times per second, for the entire time that you're working. Put your cache files on your SSD. BTW, there's no reason to not put your application files and caches on the same SSD. The reason that you split things across multiple disks is to prevent simultaneous reads and writes to and from a slow disk; the program loading from disk happens at a different time than reading and writing cache files, so there is no potential for conflict and slowdown.

  • AE cs3 can't render or ram preview

I have a 5 sec text animation and AE can't export it or ram preview it. I have a 2.2Gz Pc, 2G ram. I export standard DV its ok but when exported a complex text animation it can't preview. It asks me to change things..I don't know what the problem is. Anyhow, I am thinking to get a new computer PC with 6G of memory. I don't know if that would help or improve so I can make complex HD effects etc...in AE. Any help would be appreciated.

This may sound crazy. But sometimes when I hit a bug like this I precompose the whole thing and then it works. Hope that helps.

  • RAM preview skip the first second

    Hi,
I'm using Adobe After Effects CS6 and CC 2014 and when I'm rendering with the ram (0 on the keypad), the first second of any composition I try (in any project as well) is skipped..
Do you Have any issue for this?
Here's my computer and software specs :

It's a Yosemite bug. See the known issues here:

  • There's got to be a better way to do this (RAM preview frustration)

I loaded a 1:20 second Full HD clip into after effects. I need to edit the video based on certain sounds in the video and see if I'm matching them up correctly by previewing it with sound.
The problem is i'm getting frustrated due to After effects not behaving like Premiere. First who thought it was a good idea not to incorporate sound into after effects? Second, I have an i7 sandy bridge processor, and 16 gbs of ram, yet it still takes time to render the ram preview (with no effects on it yet).
So ram preview is my only option for sound, but the problem is every time I hit ram preview it starts the video all the way from the beginning. This is frustrating as I want to start at a specific point. Imagine having a longer video where the editing needs to take place at the end.
There are people out there doing a lot more complicated professional projects, what do you guys do to get around this?
Why can't after effects do some basic things like premiere like render fast with sound? Is it due to Mercury engine and 64 bits?
This is one of the best products on the market, surely there is a better way to do this right?

but the problem is every time I hit ram preview it starts the video all the way from the beginning.
Window --> Preview, enable the "From current time" option
yet it still takes time to render the ram preview (with no effects on it yet).
There is no magic button. If it is compressed, naturally it needs to be decompressed and decoded first. This can consume resources even on fast machines. Furthermore, drive speed matters a lot in such cases. This might actualyl multiply, if you use multiprocessing, so for this kind of simple setup it's usually better to not use it. If your harddrives are fragmented or simply generally slow, frames cannot be loaded as fast and neither will AE be able to use the disk cache. Ergo, convert the footage and move it to the fastest drive in your system.
what do you guys do to get around this?
We preview at reduced compo resolution to extend RAM previews and place markers while the RAM preview plays using the * key on the numpad.

  • RAM preview doesn't save when using multiprocessing

I'm running After Effects CC on a MacPro 2013. When I normally render a RAM preview, and I finish playing it, the green bar stays.
When I switch to the multiprocessing feature for RAM previews, after I finish playing it, the green bar disappears.
I have a large SSD global cache drive being used, so storage of the preview isn't the problem. There's plenty of RAM in the system (64GB). I've tried a number of different multiprocessing settings, and even if I only use 2 processors for RAM previews, they won't save after I play them.
Is this just the way RAM previews work with multiprocessing, or can I change some settings to fix it.
    Thanks!

Here's a shot of my current settings. I tried a number of other settings, with different numbers of processors and allocated RAM. But every time I enable multiprocessors for RAM previews, I get the same result (the RAM preview works, until I stop playing it...then the rendered frames are deleted).

  • HELP! RAM Preview needs 2 or more frames error CS6

Hello there, I just got struck by this issue and have been wasting days trying to resolve. Yes, I've looked at every FAQ, recommended tweaks, updates, system restarts, etc. and am at the end of the line as far as solutions go.
I need some expertise here, especially since there is no phone supprt.
    Here's my system info:
    Dell Server (PET320)
    12 core Xeon processors (Intel Xeon CPU e5-2420 0 A 1.90 GHz)
    32 GB RAM
    64-bit Windows Server 2088 R2 Standard
I've got 6 7200 rpm disks confirgured in a RAID 5(?) with two separate drive sections for rendering (It's set up primarily for Premiere Pro ... preview and captures)
    After Effects CS6 11.0.4.2
    Under Memory & Multiprocessing
    Installed RAM 32
RAM reserved for other apps: 6 GB
    Available for After Effects:26 GB
Reduce cache when memory is low: CHECKED
    Render mult frames simultaneously: CHECKED
    Installed CPUs:12
CPUs reserved for other apps: 4
RAM allocation per background CPU: 2GB
    Actual CPUs being used: 8
    GPU into:
    Quadro 600 v.2.1.2
    Total memory 977MB
The project I'm having trouble with is an extremely simple lower thrids animation with just a couple solids.
I have other projects that are more complicated, and have no issues.
Is there any other info I can provide to give more insight? If so, please let me know.
I need to get this project completed and am at a total standstill. Again, I've gone through every faq, article on this problem, tweak related to this and nothing.

What happens when you create a brand new project, put in a solid, animate its position, and RAM preview it?
If that works, what happens if you import your troubled project into this brand new one?
You have restarted your computer, right?

  • (MP) RAM Previews haven't worked reliably since February

I was really hoping the CC 2014 update would address this issue I've been experiencing since February, but the issue remains and if anything is worse than ever. Long story short, sometimes RAM previews work as expected (as in I press the RAM preview button and After Effects actually generates a RAM preview) and other times pressing the RAM preview button results in delays ranging from several seconds to several minutes or simply never doing anything at all. Sometimes, it's the horrendous "Initializing Background Processes this may take some time..." message, and other times it's "Rendering frame (MP) 2 of XXX requested" followed by...nothing ever happening. Try to imagine how frustrating this can be when on a deadline or with clients in the room.
I'd read that the size of your project can be a major factor in such delays. Well, I just started a brand new project that contains exactly one asset (a 1920x1080 22-second H264 video file), added a couple filters and clicked RAM Preview, only to be met with the "Rendering frame (MP) 2 of XXX requested" message and no frame ever rendered. Activity monitor showed 8 red "aeselflink (Not Responding) processes that didn't go away when I quit After Effects. I quit After Effects, logged out and back in, relaunched the project and RAM preview worked as expected. As I said, completely unreliable and unpredictable.
I need RAM Previews to work all of the time, not some of the time, and I need them to work with multi-processing enabled. I realize that disabling multi-processing for RAM previews resolves the up-front delays - but using only one of my eight CPUs is NOT a fix (considering each RAM preview would therefore take 8 times longer). Nor is rebooting and relaunching After Effects a dozen times per day a real solution, right?
My system is a 2013 New Mac Pro, 3Ghz 8-Core Intel Xeon E5, 32GB RAM, Dual D300 GPUs running Mac OS X 10.9.3 and purchased in January; I don't recall experiencing the issue prior to the February 13th AE update). The issue is present with both Adobe After Effects CC 12.2 and Adobe After Effects CC 2014 13.0. My Memory and Multi-Processing Preferences are in the attached image. I truly appreciate any help that can be offered. Thank you!

Rick, please read my third paragraph. While yes - disabling multi-processing helps, effectively turning my computer into a one-processor machine instead of an 8-processor machine is not a solution.
And I experience these long delays even with NO filters or 3rd party effects whatsoever. I just rendered an animation that was nothing more than a couple sliding illustrator layers with a 3D camera move and the render took 3 full minutes to get beyond "initializing background processes, this may take some time...". This just after a fresh launch of Adobe After Effects.

  • Possible to render out wireframe preview?

Pretty sure the answer is "no". But is there a way to render or RAM Preview the Wireframe view?  (I find it's really helpful when timing many elements. I pay attention to the overall flow rather than the content of each layer)

Yepp, you got it. Wireframes have never rendered persistently. If you are interested in a solution and would be willing to pay a few bucks, I might have something for you based on expressions that could be used...

  • RAM Previews No Longer Real Time

Work computer.   Mid 2010 Mac Pro with 64GB of RAM.  Running After Effects version 11.0.4.2.   Multiprocessing off.   AJA Control Panel v3.
    1920 x 1080 comps, 29.97 fps, no 3D.
The Mac was running Mountain Lion and RAM previews were FINE.  Zero issues.             Ever.
The computer was upgraded to Mavericks 10.9.5.      I use the term upgrade loosely, BTW.       Now  ...  RAM previews no longer play in real time.  Most I get - and it fluctuates - is 19, 20, 23 frames per second, never 29.97.    Sometimes it blasts all the way up to 40, 45, 47 like it’s playing catch-up, but that’s rare.
    - Restarted the computer. No change.
    - All projects.   Makes no difference, old legacy projects or new.
    - Even simple 1-layer projects with simple position animation, no effects - not real time.
    - 8 bit mode, not just 16 or 32 bit.
    - Color management both on and off.
    - Simulate output on and off.
    - Preferences -> Video Preview was set to AJA, so I tried Computer Monitor Only.  That doesn’t work either.
    - Full Rez, Half, Quarter. . .. . doesn’t matter.    Never real-time.
I've seen others ask about this issue but none of the posts ever resulted in "you need to set 'this' to 'that'" etc.        Have any suggestions?
    Thank you,
    Marc

Mavericks and Yosemite have both have quite a number of issues when folks upgrade to them.
Apple is really starting to bother me lately. First the attitude evident in the Final Cut debacle, then the Mac Pro annoyance, and now the OS upgrade issues... I know smartphones are making them boatloads of money, but they really seem to be neglecting their professional users who've been with them for years before iPhones were even a thing!
