Render Files incorrectly being show

I've come accross this problem a few times now since updating to 5.1 last week.
When I go to edit a sequence that has already been rendered (to view color correction and graphic overlays) the video in the canvas is showing the wrong footage.
If I cut a section out, as I need to do for last minute trimming, then Close the Gap between the other clips and put in a new transition, it's showing the old video (coming from the Render file from from the sequence before the edit) but playing the new audio after the cut. Rendering again does not fix this problem.
Very strange and buggy. I love FCP but I hate the fact that every new update seems to bring new problems even as it fixes old ones.
I've figured out that if you delete the associated render files and re-render it completely it will fix the problem, but this work around is tedious and time consuming for large projects requiring a lot of rendering.
I don't know if I explained this well, but has anyone else seen this problem with FCP 5.1.2 on an Intel mac? Any other suggestions?
Thanks,
Pete

FCP's done this for yonks - not just 5.1
It suggest your project's getting bigger and bigger. Your poor MBP has to load up all your sequences and clips when you open your project - many of which you probably don't need.
Try starting a new project and dragging what's needed from the old project to the new. Save the old project as a backup archive in case you need to access it again.
This way, you'll leave behind a lot of rubbish that's slowing and confusing your MBP. A complete new render can do wonders - but trash the old render files first and empty the trash.
How much RAM and HD space do you have? And are your Media Files on your System Drive? If they are, you need to move them to a different one.

  • Render Files Are Being Saved onto My Mac Book Hard Drive...?

    Hi All -
    So, I was highly curious as to why I have such little disk space on the hard drive on my Mac Book Pro and discovered that there is a file called "Render Files" on my hard drive which contains an enormous amount of video footage from movies I've edited in FCP.
    I don't understand why these files are going into my hard drive...? I have an external My Book connected to my computer. In FCP under System Settings, on the Scratch Book tab, Video Capture, Video Render and Audio Render are all checked off and to the right of this my My Book is listed. So I thought everything would be going into my My Book external drive.
    However, I looked into My Book and noticed that there is a file that says Capture Scratch that seems to have all of the captured footage of these movies. So, I'm thoroughly confused as to what this "Render Files" file is doing on my hard drive and how can I just get all video footage to automatically store on my external My Book drive. I'm afraid that if I delete the files in the "Render Files" that I'm going to create a real disaster.
    Any advice or clarification on this would be most appreciated.
    Thanks so much!

    Hi -
    Couple of options for you to consider:
    Open the Render Folder that you have found on your internal hard drive and sort the files by date. Are the files recent / from the current project that you are working on?
    If they are then I would go to
    http://www.digitalrebellion.com/pref_man.htm
    download Preference Manager and trash your preferences. This will cause you to lose your current preferences, favorites, etc., which you will have to manually reset - but often clears up strange behavior in FCP. I would then go back and reset my Scratch Disk settings to the external drive.
    Is there at Render Files folder on your external drive? Open that and sort be date and see if your current project render files are there.
    If they are, that would mean the render files you found on your internal drive are from projects prior to you assigning the files to your external drive.
    Hope this helps.

  • Preventing render files  - or other unwanted files - from being analyzed

    Even THOUGH the the manual says that render files don't get analysed when checking in a Final Cut Project we are having an issue where the render files are being added to the catalogue during the daily scan of the SAN.
    As a result we are getting proxy files from these render files. I have tried to do an exclude wild card filter in the 'response' admin settings with the format -FIN-*. where I am using the asterisks to represent the variable bits of the file name. However it doesn't seem to be working. Any ideas?

    Hi Matt
    I have * in the include filter, which I believe was the default when it was installed. My understanding is that will allow everything to be scanned. I presumed then that FCServer would then subsequently have a look at the Exclude option and apply those filters. Is that the order? If it the other way around then I can see why my excludes are not working.

  • Render files end up inside Final Cut Express package

    With all of the discussion here about rendering, I thought I'd let folks know that that 'ol bug that plagued Final Cut Pro for so long (and perhaps still does) is present in Final Cut Express 4.0.1 too: render files sometimes end up inside the package for Final Cut Express. I know this because I just experienced it while running FCE 4.0.1.
    With Final Cut Express not running, control-click or right-click on the Final Cut Express application file, then choose "Show Package Contents". After that, open the folder, "Contents", then the folder, "MacOS", and inside, you may see a folder for video render files, one for audio render files, or both.
    Assuming that you don't want to render to that location, then with FCE still quit, move any render folders (that you found inside of the package) elsewhere; and delete the four preference files for FCE, according to the instructions given in Tom Wolsky's on-line guide:
    http://www.fcpbook.com/Misc1.html
    Then start-up Final Cut Express and open System Settings. Once there, choose your scratch location(s): usually /Users/<username>/Documents/Final Cut Express Documents, if you are rendering to your boot drive. (If rendering elsewhere, simply specify a folder at that location.)
    Next, move the render files from the package (that are now residing elsewhere) into the respective folders inside /Users/<username>/Documents/Final Cut Express Documents, if in fact you find their respective folders there and wish to use that as a scratch location. If not, or if you have specified a location on another drive, of if you want maximum integrity of your render files, then simply open your project file and re-render everything. But you might want to stop that process just a few seconds after starting it, then check inside your scratch folders to make sure that new render files are now being stored there. After verifying that, you can go back to your project file and resume re-rendering.
    This issue may answer the question, "where are my render files". By the way, if you do a "Get Info" on the Final Cut Express application file and "Get Info" reports that that file is huge (say, several gigabytes in size), then it is likely that your render files are being stored inside.
    Please excuse this post if the subject matter has already been discussed in this forum.

    Eidschun, thank you for this thread. It doesn't matter how often it occurs, this information works on many levels and was a pleasure to read.

  • Configuring Render Files

    How do I set up Final Cut to save all of my Render Files to my external hard drives?  I have my capture scratch set to save to both of them, but when I render anything the render files are still saved to my Mac hard drive.  I'm trying to finish a large project that requires a lot of rendering, but I keep getting an error message that I have insufficient space to complete the final render of my timeline. I have 3 TB's on each of these externals, I just need to know how to map Final Cut to save my render files in both those locations. Any help or suggestions are greatly apprecited.
    Thanks!'
    Nicole

    Go to the menu Final Cut Pro > System Settings and in the Scratch Disk Pane, set the targets for the Capture Scratch and Render files to the drives you want. Then click OK at the bottom of the window.
    In the example below, render files are being target to drive "Rendy" and the Capture Scratch files to "Array 1".
    If you have set your disks correctly, and are still not getting the expected results, the next step would be to trash your preferences.

  • Render files being deleted by app

    I have several different sequences in a project. Whenever I try to render all the remaining unrendered sections of video in a given sequence, it completes the render and then deletes a previous render file, causing previously rendered shots in the sequence to suddenly become unrendered in the timeline.

    Jerry Hofmann wrote:
    What your experiencing, isn't normal at all, whether on a PPC or an intel machine. I've both running FCP 6.06 and don't see this behavior... So it's not a bug or I'd see it here, right? My guts say that there's something wrong with your basic setup.
    How is a bug normal anyway? Why should you see the same bug as I? What if I regularly use a filter that you don't use? Do you regularly use SmoothCam?
    Aahh, the $64,000 question. Yes, I admit, I've been witholding this critical piece of information. My apologies. A very dumb oversight. Most and possibly all of the shots that lose their render files are using the SmoothCam filter. But it still seems random in that other shots using that filter do not unrender. It could have something to do with using more than one instance of different parts of the same shot, all of which has been analysed. So perhaps it's a SmoothCam bug.
    If the drives are formatted OS Mac Extended, and you're running the latest versions of QuickTime and OS you running, what's left to look into is the actual condition of your installation. If you've not done a clean install in a while it's likely what would fix you up.
    Having said all that, yes of course, I've been seriously considering reinstalling. I just couldn't face it, especially since I did finally come up with a workaround that mostly solved the problem, even if it was a bit crazy (as many workarounds are).
    There are no settings which would affect this at all either... so it's either hardware or software, and it's far more likely software as long as the drives are formatted for a Mac...
    Yeah it's a pretty standard set up. All the media drives are extended with journaling turned off. I've tried using different drives as render drives and it doesn't make any difference. And it is gratifying to hear you say it's not a settings issue. I thought the same thing but I didn't trust my own opinion about that, so I was going to try it. Still might. But if all else fails it's a new installation and I'll let you know the result.
    Cheers!

  • How to check if a file is being read by another program?

    Hey all,
    I just have a few question for a project I am doing:
    How do I check if a file is being read by another program?
    How do I check how many lines it read?
    How do I get Keyboard input from the user when he is using another program other than mine? Ex: Pressing Ctrl-G to take a screenshot.
    How can I halt another program from reading a file when it already opened it? Ex: The other program opened a file and began reading. Now it is at line 2 and I want to make it skip 10 lines and contontinue.
    Thanks,
    Bluelikeu

    How do I check if a file is being read by another
    program?This is about the only partially sensible question you asked. But the answer is that unless you use some native code, you can't.
    How do I check how many lines it read?It doesn't even make sense to ask this question. First of all, what's a "line" anyway? Files are just sequences of bytes. A "line" is only in the interpretation of those bytes, such as if it contains <cr><lf> sequences an application may choose to render the contents of those bytes as logical "lines" of string sequences. Second of all, why the heck would it matter to you how many bytes have already been read by some other process(es)?
    How do I get Keyboard input from the user when he is
    using another program other than mine? Ex: Pressing
    Ctrl-G to take a screenshot.You want to spy on other applications? Shame on you, Mr. Spyware creator.
    How can I halt another program from reading a file
    when it already opened it? Ex: The other program
    opened a file and began reading. Now it is at line 2

    Why can I not attach a document to an email? Every time I want to send an email with a document attached to it, an error notice pops out. It tells me that the file is being used even when  iall other programs are closed. How can I fix this issue?

    Thanks Jeff, I was not aware that a template could be multi-page.  (All the existing templates were 1 page)
    But it worked, saving me some steps.  When I was finished I renamed the document, and locked it.
    Then tried to save it but  could not because it was locked.  I closed it, went to my Spread Sheet Folder ,
    to find it, it was not there.  The Finder could not find it either.
    So I start over again.
    I opened up Numbers and it showed my personal Numbers template folder, it contained both my new
    original 4 page template and the vanished saved document!
    I tried to delete the template containing these document data and could not - I had to go to the Library/Application Support/Numbers to physically remove it from this folder. Then I started over again.  I Finally found out how to make it work: I can now "save as", and then lock, and it will go to place where I want it to be saved and locked.
    The secret is: Click on the document title in the menu bar, and it opens up  "Save as...", which works the same as in OS 10.4.11, and you can pick the place you want for saving.  Once done that, you can then lock the document in the same pull down menu, and then close it.
    I also found later that I can delete a template from its folder, by letting Numbers open the templates,
    clicking on the one I want to remove, then go to the "Numbers Menu/File/Move to...", select "Desktop"
    and from there the selected template can then be thrown into the Trash from there.
    It appears now that the real fault of the Numbers software is that the "Save as" command is not available in the "Edit" or "File" pull-down menus, but hidden behind the title of the document.

  • Files no longer show up on server

    I have a PC server with all my files on it. I work on the files from the mac. It has to be set up this way for our RIP to access the files. My question is some files are no longer showing up on the mac. They are on the PC and when I delete and copy them back to the PC they show up on the mac. Why are they not showing up on the mac anymore? Is there a easy way to fix this? I'm pretty sure its a file sharing problem but I have no idea how to fix it. Thanks

    To configure a Mac OS X user account so that .DS_Store files are not created when interacting with a remote file server using the Finder, follow the steps below.
    Note: This will affect the user's interactions with SMB/CIFS, AFP, NFS, and WebDAV servers.
    1 Open the Terminal.
    2 Type:
    defaults write com.apple.desktopservices DSDontWriteNetworkStores true
    3 Press Return.
    4 Restart the computer.
    If you want to prevent .DS_Store file creation for other users on the same computer, log in to each user account and perform the steps above—or distribute a copy of your newly modified com.apple.desktopservices.plist file to the ~/Library/Preferences folder of other target users.
    These steps do not prevent the Finder from creating .DS_Store files on the local volume. These steps do not prevent previously existing .DS_Store files from being copied to the remote file server.

  • What are the "rules" regarding render files?

    OK...one PO-ed user here, wondering *** is going on...
    I've always said that FCP is about as weak as an early version of Media 100 when it comes to render files.  You can search my posts (not that you'd want to...), and find that I've been complaining about every system I regularly work on losing render files like a 6 year old loses mittens.
    However, it's hit the fan, thus this post.  I work on a half-hour tv show.  Let me mention that we shoot and edit in XDCAM EX 1080i60; this is notable as yes, I know, rendering in long-GOP codecs is slow.  Oh, I know it...
    Anyway, this past Tuesday I dilligently rendered my composite sequence, and the broadcast output sequence, and then exported the broadcast sequence for feed.  All was well.
    Today, I opened up the project so I could make final archives and web exports of the individual segments...and guess what?  Gee, Wally, the entire sequence was, you guessed it, unrendered.  Where did those pesky render files go?  Well, I figured I'd try something I never try, and that was to reconnect them.  Hopeless, right?
    As it turns out, yes, hopeless...because when I navigated to the Render Files folder, there was a grand total of 11 render files for this particular project.  Now, I don't change my System Settings at all...I like where things go, I have my media volumes set up, everything should be hunky-dory, no?
    So to get to the heart of the matter...what process is tossing render files?  Why are they disappearing from my hard drive?
    I have folders from projects from 2 months ago that have some render files in them, but I don't have the render files my system (supposedly) created on Tuesday!
    Anyone got any ideas?

    Hey, Shane, as soon as I saw you posted I began to get deja vu all over again, as we had a discussion about losing render files which, yes, caused me to stop nesting...for the most part.  So yes, here we again have evidence that the "nesting behavior" coding team took off early the day they were supposed to be bug-fixing...but i digress.
    I nest only when necessary...generally, we edit "packages" (your acts) and then I get em, do whatever audio and color correction time allows, and copy and past them into my complete program sequence.
    However, when all is well, good, revised and approved, I "edit" that complete 22:10 sequence into my "BS" sequence (you might guess, Broadcast Safe), which has the bars n tone requested by the broadcast mothership, and where I apply a light Broadcast Safe filter and a touch of compression to the audio.  So I guess my only question here it...are you suggesting that I just splat-A my edited sequence and apply the filters to the gazillion-odd clips individually?

  • When filtering by keyword and using "Edit In" with Photoshop, edited file does not show up in list

    When I do an "edit in" using CS5 and save it, the edited file does not show up in my LR4 preview window.
    Message title was edited by: Brett N

    There are two distinct modes by which Edit In... may first open an image into PS: as a fully pre-converted rendered file; or as an on-the-fly converted image in memory.
    (When LR opens a PS-edited image a second time into PS, using "Edit Original", the former option is always used.)
    In the latter case, it is ACR which does this on-the-fly conversion, working from the original image (as imported into LR) plus your subsequent LR adjustment metadata. This means ACR compatibility with LR becomes an issue - as it is not, with the pre-rendered file option.
    There is a useful clue to which mode is being used:
    the title of the PS document window, in the case of the on-the-fly conversion, still shows the name of the Raw file (or whatever) that you started with in LR... no file has been saved as yet, to say any different. You can Save or Save as, wherever and under whatever name, and from now on LR will look there for your edited image. Or if you close unsaved, LR has no edited image to show at all.
    the title of the PS document window in the pre-rendered case, is the name of a file already saved on disk and already showing in LR. If you then saved this elsewhere, you would merely make a duplicate which LR cannot know about - and if this duplicate is the one which contains your PS work, LR will accordingly not show that. It is busy showing the content of the specific file that was passed to PS.
    So, if inside CS5 your document is called something like IMG23334.dng - you can save it wherever you like. If inside CS5 your document is called something like IMG23334-edit.tif - you will have to save your changes back to that exact same file, in order for them to be seen in LR.

  • Iphoto fails to render files for export to certain folders after upgrade

    I just upgraded to Yosemite and the latest version of iPhoto but I now unfortunately get an error message when I try to export photos. It seems to work if I export to the main Documents folder but fails if I try to export to a sub folder of the main Documents folder (very odd) which is where I want the exports to be saved. The error message says "Unable to render file for export:/Volumes/NO NAME/DCIM/IMG-1058.jpg". I don't know why the path name shown here is a SD Card path which is not connected. Hope someone can help? It worked fine before the upgrade to iPhoto 9.6.1
    Thanks
    Craig

    The iPhoto preference file might be wonky. Try the following:
    1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
    2 - delete the contents the following folder: User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto
    3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
    NOTE: For Mavericks and Yosemite,  go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Options menu to bring the this window:
    where you can check the Show Library Folder checkbox.

  • Why can't FC save the folder locations set for render files?

    I wrongly assumed that when you go to system settings to select the scratch disks (root folder where all the audio and video render folders and files go, capture files, etc.) that Final Cut would save the folder locations within the FC project you are working in. Makes total sense, but for reasons I don't understand, FC does NOT save these folder locations and the result is that I have render files scattered all over the place on my hard drive and it is quite a mess! Fortunately, the project file remembers where it put the render files, so as long as you don't remove or rename any project folders, everything shows up rendered on the time line as it should. The problem is, if I'm working on several projects at once, I have to reset the scratch disks every time I reopen a project, otherwise the program will save it to the last scratch location selected and put all of the render files in another project's folder. I often forget to reset the scratch disks when I'm busy and now I have render files mixed up in various project folders.
    Why can't you just set the scratch disks one time when you first set up the project and have the project always remember that location, instead of always having to reset them every time you reopen a project. I love Final Cut, but this is a product defect that should be addressed and corrected. If the project file can remember where it is putting all the render files, it should also be capable of remembering the scratch disk locations you originally selected when you first set up the project or better yet, save it to the project's root folder by default. Am I missing something here?

    As MtD describes, FCP sets file locations for ALL projects at the system level.  It may help to organize things this way so your files don't end up scattered across multiple locations.
    Save the project files to your User folder on the boot drive.
    For all the other files FCP creates, set them on a non-boot drive similar to this:
    Media Drive
    ----->FCP Documents
    ---------->Autosave Vault
    ---------------->Acme Widgets Demo (sample project name)
    ---------------->Grass Valley Music Video (sample project name)
    ---------------->Jen's Wedding (sample project name)
    ---------->Audio Render Files
    ---------------->Acme Widgets Demo (sample project name)
    ---------------->Grass Valley Music Video (sample project name)
    ---------------->Jen's Wedding (sample project name)
    ---------->Capture Scratch
    ---------------->Acme Widgets Demo (sample project name)
    ---------------->Grass Valley Music Video (sample project name)
    ---------------->Jen's Wedding (sample project name)
    ----------->Render Files
    ---------------->Acme Widgets Demo (sample project name)
    ---------------->Grass Valley Music Video (sample project name)
    ---------------->Jen's Wedding (sample project name)
    ----------->Waveform Cache
    Of course, you can choose to keep renders or the Autosave Vault folder on other drives ... just keep them off your boot drive.  It may not be the way you're use to working, but it's worked well for me the past 14 years.  When you finish with a project and ready to delete the associate files, just go to your media drive and delete folders bearing the project's name.

  • Communication Channel marked all files as being read on FTP

    The Mailbox FTP has all the files flagged as being read when a single file is read through a communication channel.  I manually unflagged the status field so all files had a status of N so none were pulled.  I had 14 files for this test flagged as N.   I turned off all our CCu2019s.  I activated one that was pulling the last file in the list based on the Service Ref# which is unique file name.  I refreshed the dir of the FTP several times as the CC was running.  One by one as the flag was changed to Y (file read) from top to bottom.  It only took a second for each one until it got to three very large files and the status stopped while it was reading the file.  After a minute it continued to change the flag until it read the last one.   All 14 files on the ftp now had the status flag changed to Y.  It appears it actually read the file content one by one and set the flag until it was done.  Do you have any ideas why it would do this?  From a dos prompt I donu2019t have any of these issues so Iu2019m guessing itu2019s something unique in the SAP FTP adapter that is doing it?
    From a dos prompt I can successfully do a get 003520827870964903 c:data.txt and it will only update that ST flag for that one file as being read.  I can also do a get %EDT39A22%W_Z1JI4960 c:data.txt  and it will only flag the four files as being read that have that Mailbox/APRF value.  Now I'm trying to get my CC to do the same but no matter what I try it marks all six files as being read.   I have in my source directory %EDT39A22%W_Z1JI4960 and * for a file name and this will mark all files as being read when activated.   I have entered 003520827870964903 for a file name to further qualify and it still marks all files as being read.  It seems to be getting the file I want cause when I view the communication channel monitor it shows the right data in the payload but it always refers to another file for the archive / delete / test option from the processing tab.  There are no problems having a CC write a file out using similar parms for Mailbox/APRF, but trying to read a single file using the Service Ref # or a collection of files using a Mailbox/APRF mask seem to update the status for all files as being read.  Any suggestions are welcome.

    Have you installed any apps that auto display the emails when they come in? If so the auto read feature may be triggering this, I had a app at one time that showed my emails in the preview window and it made the emails be listed as read... I would check your apps and make sure you are not using something like this unknowingly.

  • How can I EXCLUDE particular folders/files from being included in the Lightroom 5 catalog?

    How can I EXCLUDE particular folders/files from being included in the Lightroom 5 catalog?
    I want to be able to specify paths and/or filename patterns that should NEVER be indexed in the catalog: not that they don't show up under certain circumstances, just that they are NOT THERE (in the catalog) to begin with!!
    I also do NOT want to have to respecify these criteria when "synching" the catalog; criteria should be PERMANENT (or at least 'til they're changed in LR preferences).
    I cannot be the only person in the world with this problem--but it sure seems like it, because I've spent an inordinate amount of time doing online searches & I can't find anything that addresses this issue.
    Can anyone PLEASE HELP me?
    BTW, Adobe employees (if there are any of you out there), I'm simply trying out LR now.  If I can't get this (seemingly fundamental) thing worked out (with relatively little effort), Adobe is going to LOSE A SALE of LR, because it's useless to me without this feature.
    Thanks,

    Thanks for the info... but how to you TELL LR to EXCLUDE images in a particular directory/directory structure?  The intuitive place to indicate this would be a right-click on the folder itself (or particular images), but no such option exists..  "???"  Thanks again, -pt

You don't stick a lot of labels on certain shelves, slap a credit card down on the counter each week, and announce you are buying everything that doesn't have a label on its shelf. You just choose the things you want to buy.
    Your mention of "synching the catalog" suggests that you are expecting the LR library, to mirror the total images in the computer by default. This is not IMO a useful way to think about it. LR contains no images at all, by default: the Catalog starts out empty.
    Then you Add just those selected images that you want to import, among those already in the computer. That's a one-off process which is IMO best achieved controllably in batches - which you can keyword and otherwise organise in LR terms as you go. For new incoming images, ongoing, it is a question of Copying, Moving or Adding these in defined batches as they occur - from the relevant location only - there is no need to re-consider the import of a wider body of images. And one would not want to repeat that whole task anyway: one's prior investment in achieving the right selectivity, has a positive value.
