Render on import?

Is it the consensus that it is best to render 1:1 on import? What are the
pros and cons on this? What about other thoughts? How much significant
change in file space is it really?
Thanks much.

Lightroom does
not support 1:1 preview rendering during import, the actual options being: Embedded or Standard-sized. However, it's worth noting the following (also see attached screenshot):
1. Embedded (default) is by far the quickest method for getting your images into Lightroom. However, the lack of Standard-sized, which is the minimum that Lightroom Library can actually work with, means that the application will render Standard-sized on demand (i.e. as thumbs become visible within the Content area). Asking Lightroom to undertake this task at the same time as you're trying to use the application is a recipe for, frustration, etc.
2. Importing your files with Standard-sized previews enabled in Import dialog will take longer than 1 above, but on completion Lightroom will already have previews that match the minimum requirement for working in the Library. Assuming that you won't be looking at every image at 100% (i.e 1:1) then this preview size will allow you to quickly review, rate, label, even make quick colour/tone adjustments, etc the files within the Library module. If you need to see an file at 100% then Lightroom will render that preview on demand (while it's being rendered you'll see the "Working" overlay appear at bottom of preview).
Import option 2 above takes longer than 1 but is less likely to result in wasted time and frustration, especially since Lightroom will not have to grind out the Standard-sized previews on demand.
If you're not going to be working on the files immediately after import but do need to get them into Lightroom as quickly as possible then the best option would be to choose import option 1 (i.e. default embedded previews). Once imported select all of the files, choose either Render Standard-sized or Render 1:1 previews from Library module Library>Previews menu. However, be aware that rendering 1:1 previews can take 2 to 3 times longer to complete than Standard-sized.
At some point in the future we might see an option for 1:1 previews during actual import, but I doubt that it will be any time soon.
As for file space - as an example of how this pans out for one of my catalogs containing 13,500 mixed Canon 10D, 5D, 1DM2 and 1DsM2 files:
- Standard-sized High Quality 1680 pixel previews takes around 14.5GB of disk space (default size at medium quality would be around 6GB)
- 1:1 previews takes just under 40GB

  • Why do I need to render an imported clip in the timeline to view it??

    I can't figure this out.I have used FCP 3 many times before but now I have imported an H264.mp4 clip into my timeline using FCP 4.5. Now I have to render it to watch it in the timeline?It appears that I have to render any clips I import into the timeline including .mov files.
    Is this a FCP 4.5 thing?
    I am operating a Dual 867 G4 with 2 gigs of Ram. 10.4.6 OS.
    It will take forever to render this project as it is Hours of HD footage.
    Thanks so much for any help.
    Never had this issue with non HD footage using FCP 3.
    G4 dual 867, 2 gig Ram Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Format: H.264 Decoder,368 x 208,Millions
    AAC, Stereo(L R).44.100 kHz
    23.98
    You're dimensions are 368x208? Never seen that size (though, I'm sure there are a multitude of sizes I haven't seen). Did you specify those dimensions in HandBrake or were they default? Did you set those dimensions in your sequence? Look at all of your columns in the browser in regards to the clip properties; enter all of those into the sequence settings. This may be wrong, but I would even specify H.264 as the compressor.
    Also, you said "HD footage", but you ripped it off a DVD. Was it a video DVD, or a data disc? If it was video, I believe it would have been compressed and down-rez'd already to SD, so it shouldn't really be HD footage anymore (not native anyway...unless it was a HD-DVD).
    Looking to maybe export H.264.mov as another format
    using Quicktime Pro. Think that will help?
    You could do this, I believe, but it may not be necessary.

  • HOw to make AE render my imported sound?

    I imported a sound and layered it in the comp but AE doesnt render it in preview nor in final movie.
    It says that the sound option is set to off in the render settings but i see no where i can change that.
    What can i do?

    You may not be doing a proper RAM Preview -- hitting the space bar won't cut it.  Time to open AE's online help!
    Here's the appropriate section for your needs.
    Now, this is a pretty basic thing.  It sounds like you may be trying to use AE intuitively.  If so, you won't have a lot of luck.  The application has too many easily-overlooked basic features that a good knowledge of the basics is imperative.
    Fortunately, it's easy to get that basic knowledge.  Here's an excellent source.

  • ?Need to render each imported clip?

    Please help me as I am relatively new to FCP. I import my movies through QuickTimePro - with settings DV/DVCPro-NTSC; and my sequence settings in FCP are NTSC DV (3:2). With these setting I am required to render each clip. What am I doing wrong? Please help.

    Imported how? Let's clear up some terminology. CAPTURE is when you capture footage from your camera. IMPORT is when you bring in already existing footage, like music files, graphics or pictures.
    So what exactly are you doing?
    OH...after you choose your EASY SETUP, delete Sequence 1. That has the settings the project was using before you switched easy setups. Create a new project and you should have the correct settings.

  • 1:1 Previews Slooooow To Render After Import

    I import new images and that happens very quickly, but then I have to wait and wait and wait for the preview rendering process to even begin.  Once it starts it runs fairly quickly, but after the import I want to kick the computer to get the process to start.    The number of imported images makes no difference. Any suggestions?

    So probably safe to assume that 716.8 MB available for LR is normal then for Windows 32bit systems. I checked my Vista 64bit system while building 5D MKII 1:1 previews (1280 x 1024 monitor), and 'Real Memory Used By Lightroom' starts out at about 400 MB, climbs to about 900 MB, then quickly drops back to 400 MB. This cycle repeats about every 10 seconds and never exceeds 1 GB, even though I have 4GB available to LR.
    Bob, when you get back to the computer try monitoring both the LR System Info panel and Windows Task Manger on top of the Lightroom window. Try removing some previously imported files from LR, and then reimport them and watch the LR 'System Info' 'Real Memory Usage' and Windows Task Manger> Performance tab 'CPU Usage. Check the actual %  CPU Usage and if both cores are being utilized evenly. See if any of these readings change at the point where the system seems to hang before preview building.

  • Livetype 2 or Motion 2 projects, better to render & import o

    Which gives best finished quality when working with a Motion 2 or Livetype 2 project into Final Cut Pro 5, should I prerender or just render in Final Cut Pro 5, or does it just not matter?
    As always thanks for your time in reading and replying to my post,
    Sebastian

    should I prerender or just render in Final Cut Pro 5, or does it just not matter? < </div>
    If you just import the project you can do a round-trip if you need to make changes. If you render and import you can't.< </div>
    Personal preferences, mostly, I'd say. The benefits in performing the render are increased performance at the expense of possibly requiring additional rendering if you change your mind about something. But I rarely get stuff right the first few times and today's rendering capabilities/speed do not impede my editing. (Now, if Apple could just give us realtime alpha processing like any other respectable NLE...)
    I love the ability to whiz back and forth between the apps and have the unrendered file immediately update back downstream. However, most of my projects contain dozens of LT and Motion clips these days. Not rendering the files creates terrible sluggishness on my system (allowing for possibly idiotic user error, of course).
    What I would like to see is an automatic relinking to the newly rendered files instead of merely being able to auto-update the link to the project file. Umm, is that possible now and I've just missed it? AE can autolink to proxies, tremendously cool timesaver.

  • Rendering a QT movie import

    I've got a screen capturing program that outputs QT movies, and you can use pretty much all the available codecs to output it. But when I bring it into FCE, it wants to render it (OK if you don't move or edit it, which i'm not so much as I'm just using a capture of a flash movie as a guide) - any ideas as to a better output format (using Animation now) or other suggestions ?

    unfortunately when I was evaluating snapzpro I found I wasn't able to change the (video was ok) audio settings that didn't require rendering when importing into FCE. I found iShowu was a better choice as it was flexible enough to change the recording settings that didn't involve a render when importing into FCE and it recorded to right format rather post capture re-recording.

  • Can you permanently fix or render audio so it can be moved?

    I'm trying to add 2 audio tracks to a sequence to make a total of 4 audio tracks. Every time I move one of these audio tracks, I have to render it again to find out what I have, else I get a bunch of beeps. Is there a way to render or import audio files so they will stay rendered? Or so they don't have to be rendered to play correctly? I haven't found an answer in the "Help" section.
    Would appreciate comments.

    I think I may have found the answer to at least part of the audio problem. I started a new test project and captured 2 files with stereo audio. I did this with Easy Set Up DV NTSC, which give 48 k audio. When I put these files on the timeline one after the other, they played ok. When I moved the audio of one of the files below the other, all of a sudden I was in a render situation but none of the Render options would work.
    I went to Menu>User preferences>general>realtime audio mixing and selected 4. Now the audios will mix and can be moved and rendering is not required. Is this the complete answer?
    Would appreciate comments.

  • Premiere CC render causes system audio to fail/skip/choppy

    Hello,
    When I link media, render, or import media into Premiere CC 2014 my system audio (iTunes and Google Play) immediately artifacts and is choppy, skips, and sometimes becomes muted for a few seconds.
    Again, it only occurs when I'm processing media after it was offline or when I'm rendering a sequence.
    Anyone else have this issue?
    System Specs:
    Apple iMac 27" (Late 2013)
    3.5GHz Intel Core i7
    32 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
    NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M 4096 MB
    3 TB Fusion Drive (Local)
    18TB Promise Pegasus R6 RAID (External 1)
    8TB Gtech RAID (External 2)
    OSX 10.9.4 (13E28)
    Software Specs:
    Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2014.0.1
    8.0.1 (21) Build

    Yes I considered your "solution" of just upgrading to Adobe CC but on principal I don't want to have to shell out more money to "fix" the problem. I was able to get an Adobe technician to view my screen in real time. He asked me where Prem Pro was after I opened it and my response was "precisely". The only evidence that Prem Pro is open is that there is the taskbar there with what appears to be fully functional drop down tabs but as far as the panels/workspace goes non-existent! He has "escalated" the matter I'll let you know what occurs next. I have tried using the software mode and there is no change. Like you I have wondered about a hardware proplem but I have checked via Disk Utility and there doesn't appear to be any? The CUDA issue well a) I am not sure how I would revert to previous drivers and b) when I re-installed Prem Pro from disc (that's version 6.0.0.) the only render option it gave me was Software only but that was also greyed out. Prem Pro still did not open up as it should!
    I'll let you know what transpires.

  • No Audio when imported and played on the timeline

    I imported with a panasonic DVM100B using a canopus ADVC-100 and RCA cables I have ordered a 9pin to 4pin firewire.. The capture files plays video and audio from Quick Time and will play when put in iMovie. The audio will not play when imported into Final Cut Studio HD upgrade and placed on the timeline. The Audio track shows peaks when open and the audio meter shows movement when playing the track.
    Any suggestions

    Thanks for the info. I went back to the audio and video settings and the audio output and playback is now on default. It is working except I had to render all imported files.

IS oki I mean, but do any one know if is limitation In Keyy frames in Shake or so ??
    Regards,

    Sounds like you have a scoping problem, but without more code
    we'd never be able to tell. Do you have your loadvariables code
    sitting on the main movie or the movieclip? Are you using classes
    to control anything? Most likely, you just need to take a look at
    the way you are referencing your variables....

  • How to pop up a browser window from a managed bean?

    I have a user case like this:
    User login our home website. He/she clicks a button. Control flow goes to a managed bean (MB here after) to check some conditions. If conditions are met, instead of sending the user back to the home page, the user will be presented a new web site (e.g. forums.oracle.com) in a popup window on top of our home site.
    Can we invoke a website in a adf popup? If so, how to do that? If not, any idea on how to develop this use case?
    Any idea is appreciated.

    Sorry, I have updated the previous reply with the required inputs.
    For convenience, putting it again;
    if you need to check for some condition and then invoke the browser, you could use the following code in your managed bean for af:commandButton for Action.
    import javax.faces.context.FacesContext;
    import org.apache.myfaces.trinidad.render.ExtendedRenderKitService;
    import org.apache.myfaces.trinidad.util.Service;

  • How set and get parameter for a session of a portlet (Java)

    I would like get parameter and set parameter for a portlet in portal 9.02. This parameter must be availbale during the session of the portal.
    With Java Servlet
    // I retrieve my session
    HttpServletRequest httpreq = (HttpServletRequest)req;
    HttpServletResponse httpresp = (HttpServletResponse)resp;
    HttpSession session = httpreq.getSession();
    //And after i can get or set some parameter for this servlet
    //Example
    session.setAttribute("MyEmployeeNumber","600000");
    String id = (String)session.getAttribute("MyEmployeeNumber");
    // But with Portlet in portal, i can't do it.
    PortletRenderRequest pr= (PortletRenderRequest)httpreq.getAttribute(HttpCommonConstants.PORTLET_RENDER_REQUEST);
    String sUser=pr.getUser().getName();
    ProviderSession session=pr.getSession();
    // But after if i want get or set a value in this session i have a internal error 500
    session.setAttribute("MyEmployeeNumber","600000");
    I would like my parameter is avalaible during a session for a user in each page of the portal, because my portlet is on each page.

    I have almost the same problem. I tried as you suggested, but it doesn't work yet.
    provider.xml

    PortletRenderRequest pReq = (PortletRenderRequest)request.getAttribute(HttpCommonConstants.PORTLET_RENDER_REQUEST);
    String valueSession = (String)pReq.getAttribute("sesion");
    if (valueSession != null) {
    pReq.setAttribute("session", "value1");
    out.println("<br>(1)valueSession != null");
    out.println("<br>(1)valueSession : " + pReq.getAttribute("session"));

    pReq.setAttribute("session", "value2");
    out.println("<br>(2)valueSession == null");
    out.println("<br>(2)valueSession : " + pReq.getAttribute("session"));

    And i always get as result:
    (2)valueSession == null
    (2)valueSession : value2
    Even when i send values (post) at the same page or browsing between tabs:
    I check my provider registration and it has the value "once per session"
