Render on internal HD same speed as USB - make sense?

I cannot figure this out. I'm using MacBook unibody that is a core 2 duo 2.0 ghz w/ 2GB of RAM, and a 160GB 5400 HD. I wanted to speed up the render time qnd was thinking that if added another internal 7200 HD as a dedicated scratch disk that it would speed up the render a little bit. The problem is I checked the activity monitor today and I was only writing at 4mb/s which seems really slow. I plugged in a spare USB HD and it wrote at the same speed. A 20 second clip took maybe 15seconds longer on the USB.
I'm editing HD 1920x1080 arched import to Aic.
Does this make any sense? Is there a setting thing I'm not aware of? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

The scratch disk will make almost no difference to render times. Render speed is entirely based on processor speed.

  • How can I have two fields with the same name if it makes sense?

    Hello, folks :)
I have a pretty hard time figuring out how I can have two text fields with the same binding name.
The whole problem is that when I need two fields with the same binding name they are still differnent coz they have the same name but differnt indices.
I should make a form filled at runtime by merging a pdf form file and an fdf file data file. And I have no choice to do it differently. And my form file needs some data like customerName, companyName twice in one form. But there's only one possible buinding name indexed zero.
How can I create a field with absolutely the same name or is it just impossible due to possible name conflicts? And is there a workaround to this problem? I just need one piece of data repeated in different places.
    Thanks for your replies :)
P.S. if u think that the problem is not clear enough let me know. I'll supply you with more details. But the general process can not be changed.
One pdf should be mergred with an fdf with as the result of their merge a new filled and flattened form. I have no control over fdfs their are generated by Oracle and I can not fill the form using XML files coz this process should be integrated in a working application.

I just thought about a really ugly workaround with a server-side script adding values to fdf files but it's a bit of work and tests and personally i think it's a bad idea :-(

Been using an Avastor HDX-800 for storage and backup, also a SUPERDISK for smaller stuff; recently the SUPERDISK does not appear on the screen, and the light blinks while you hear it spin, also the Avastor has started to have the same problem, both USB conncected, both worked well before, but both now spinning, blinking, and not showing up on the screen as before,
Interestingly they both appear in the System Profiler, but just not working the same as before
I have tried other USB ports, but the same responce,

yes I did reset the PRAM, but no benefit, still the same problem
my usb devices are:  keyboard, mouse, printer, SD-USB-M3, and LaCie d2 DVDRW:
the mouse and printed are plugged into the keyboard: i have tried to move, these around, and have even tried just the mouse, printer and SD-USB-M3, but still the same problem

  • Is speed by USB modem?

    hi
i use a USB SpeedTouch 330 modem with my internet DSL connexion. the reported service speed is "up to 1 Mbps" but my online speed tests rarely pass the 300 Kbps mark (download speed).
i wonder whether the modem or the USB (which is the classical USB 1.0) connector itself is limiting my speed. would i be better off if i buy a router or i make the connexion to my internal ethernet via a non-USB modem?
    many thanks
    txen

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
The USB1.1 port is 12Mbps so easily able to cope with your up to 1Mbps DSL connection.
Unfortunately DSL performance degrades with distance from your local telephone exchange; the so called "last mile" or local loop. If you live fairly remote this probably explains it. If you live in a built up area then it may be another reason.
    cheers

I don't think you can connect a printer since you won't have the printer drivers. I use FingerPrint from collobos.com to print to my non-AirPrint printers.

Never tried it but I doubt you will be able to acces the DAQ simultaneously, To verify it try accesing the DAQ in LabVIEW and in MAX at the same time.

  • Does Airport Express really communicate the same speed to both Mac and non-Mac devices?

Okay, so to fully understand my situation, here's a briefing: Our old Netgear router was not pushing nearly the speeds we were paying for (we pay for 30 and were getting 10-15 max, usually much less). I recently got an iMac which means that all of my devices are now Apple made, so I decided to get an Airport Express to hopefully improve our wireless speeds. I set it up with the modem going in the WAN port and the old router attached to the LAN port so that it could still act as an ethernet hub for the few hard-wired devices knocking around. I set up both a network and a guest network, with our original one still active through the Netgear router.
I get 45 Mbps from the new network on my iMac, but my roommate is only getting around 9. If he connects to the old one, he caps out at about 25. Is the wireless card in his PC just not capable of receiving more than that? He insists that since it's an Apple router it is not as compatable with non-Apple products. Interestingly, I get faster speeds on my iPhone from the guest network than I can from either the new or old main networks in our house.
I know this is a really long question, but has anyone had this same problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Also: isn't the wireless speed of the old Netgear router still basically being pushed through the Airport Express, as it's the only thing connected directly to the modem? Are there any settings I can change to make everything run smoothly? If the PC, Android phones, etc can connect to the new network at the same speed as my Apple products, then we can eliminate the old network altogether if that will help.

I think I answered my own question. I found this on the web:
    http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/index.htm?fat32format.htm
Seems to suggest that using this third party exe to format it instead of windows inbuilt one will allow for partitions greater than 32GB. So this looks the way to go. And the 2GB limit per file is just for FAT16 not FAT32 apparently, but even if it is I only have a few iso/video files bigger than 2 gig so will just use a splitter on them.
Hope this is useful to someone else

Have you updated iTunes with the absolute latest software?  If you have not in a long time, your iPad won't be recognized.

  • Speed of USB port?

Is there a program around that will measure the speed of a USB port? I have been doing back up to a USB drive and it is taking for ever.
    Thanks
    Jim

Yep. 480MB/8=60MB. That where I got it.
I don't know of any software that will monitor the USB port in real time and give an accurate reading of the transfer rate. After you install the card, System Profiler will tell you which of your connected devices are capable of full rate and which are not. It will not, however, tell you the real throughput of any device.
Most devices are incapable of saturating the USB bus when it's running at 480 Mb/s. Usually other factors limit the speed. With the exception of the highest speed hard drives, the disk read/write speed limits the throughput rather than the USB connection.
It's easy to calculate the approximate transfer rate from a hard drive or other storage device even though you can't monitor the speed in real time. Just copy a good sized file to/from the external drive and time it. Then divide the file size by the time it took.
I think you'll notice the increased speed over USB 1.1 even when you don't measure it. I've only recently had a computer with USB 2.0 ports, but I have had a USB 2.0 scanner running on a USB 1.1 port for years. Now that it's connected to a USB 2.0 port, the speed increase is really noticeable even though I haven't measured it.

Can i retro grade back to the last version?

I did not remove anything from mozilla firefox that is stored in either appdata or under the windows users directory (if any)
... the as suggested reinstalled the latest version of the firefox browser using the link you provided in the email ..; tested and several issues still remain present and unresolved ....
so please this is urgent or I will have to jump browsers and start using chrome .. because we work 14 hours a day 6 (sometimes 7) days a week, to get ready for the launch of our newest venture and we cannot lose that much days on browser related issues ... so please instead of putting me through week long step process .. of do this .. do that .. can you please actually look into the issue from your end .. I use firefox for so many, many years thta I deserve this kind of support .. thnx Robert

  • ASA 5580 with EtherChannel 20Gbs, Does the Failover link must match the same Speed?

    Hello,
I have an ASA 5580, I am plannning on setting two EtherChannels (inside and outside), each channel will include two TenGigabit interfaces.
My questions is that if the links that I am gonig to use for the failover and link, should also be 20Gbs each, or it is ok to use 10Gbs for each link?
According to the Configuration guide 8.4
Use the following failover interface speed guidelines for the ASAs:
    • Cisco ASA 5510
    – Stateful link speed can be 100 Mbps, even though the data interface can operate at 1 Gigabit due
    to the CPU speed limitation.
    • Cisco ASA 5520/5540/5550
    – Stateful link speed should match the fastest data link.
    • Cisco ASA 5580/5585
    – Use only non-management 1 Gigabit ports for the stateful link because management ports have
lower performance and cannot meet the performance requirement for Stateful Failover.
    Thanks in advance

    Hi,
I have 2x ASA5580-20 with 8x1GE interfaces and additional 2x 10GE interfaces each. Software version running is v8.4.4.1.
I am planning to use them in multiple context (active/active) transparent mode. Taking into account the FW performance of 5Gbps real-world traffic per ASA5580-20, which on the following interface configurations would make the most sense?
    Option 1:
    2x10GE = 20GE Etherchannel for Data
    1x1GE LAN Failover
    1x1GE STATE Failover
    Option 2:
    1x 10GE Data
    1x 10GE LAN & STATE Failover
    Option 3:
    2x10GE = 20GE Etherchannel for Data
    4x1GE = 4GE Etherchannel for LAN/STATE Failover (possibly up to 8x1GE)
(etherchannel for LAN/STATE Failover actually does not make much sense, since only one interface wll be used anyway)
    Option 4:
    1x10GE LAN & STATE Failover
    8x1GE = 8 GE Etherchannel for Data
I have read several guides (e.g. link1, link2, link3). Some state that 1GE Failover interfaces would suffice for the ASA5580, others recommend a link as fast as the data link. Almost none of them account for higher bandwidth etherchannels.
What is recommended in this case? Both Firewalls will be connected to one VSS Switch Pair, so it would make sense to cross-connect with at least 2 links on each VSS member.
The ASA does not support connecting an EtherChannel to a switch stack. If the ASA EtherChannel is connected cross stack, and if the Master switch is powered down, then the EtherChannel connected to the remaining switch will not come up. (http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/security/asa/asa84/configuration/guide/interface_start.html)
Thanks in advance for your feedback!

  • Trying to make sense of this speed change.

Ok, I'll try and make this clear, and then see if someone can explain to me why I should put up with this.
I've had BT Infinity since November 2011 and was on the option 2 40mbps connection, and for the last 14 or so months I've had very few issues and CONSISTANTLY had the full 40mbps speed.
Now, two weeks ago I upgraded to the new option 2 78mbps contract because I wanted my P2P to be unlimited again, which they had stopped on the old contract. On day one I noticed that my IP profile was set to 52mbps and while i thought it was odd it wasn't set to 78 I thought I'd let it settle and see if it just needed time. For two days I got that full 52 down and about 12-15 up depending on time of day.
Then I had a power cut and when it all came back up my IP profile was set to 30.75mbps and I was only getting 30mbps up and 8-11 up depending on time of day. I rang up and they told me they would reset the line and profile. That was thursdaay, and today (sunday) its still showing my IP profile as 30.75 and I'm still getting the same speed.
When i rang again I got told that maybe that was all the speed I would get. To which I said how the hell could I suddenly be only able to get 30mbps when I've had no troulbe getting 40mbps on the old contract for well over a year.
Frankly this seems ridiculous, and made worse by the fact you have to speak to multiple help desks, none of which can actually do ANYTHING to help you, and anything to do with IP profile change or line reset needs an engineer to be sent out, AND he can't reset it either, but has to come out and then phone his help desk to do it.... CAN this system be anymore stupid?
I've been with BT since broadband first came out, but frankly the service has got utterly ridiculous, and this speed issue if I can't resolve it might be the final straw to break the camels back.
Sorry for the whine, but if someone can put anything positive to this I'd love it, as I'm very frustrated having spent many hours on phone over last two weeks since this started trying to resolve it.

in my experience I've never in all the years with BT seen the IP profile go UP automatically.  I can assure you that DLM profile and sync speed do go up of their own accord when line quality is consistently ok.  It does take much longer than you would hope, though.  Often 2 to 3 weeks, not even 'just' 10 days.
While waiting for a hoped for increase, it is worth disconnecting and reconnecting the router (NOT modem) each morning. Either use the web interface (I prefer that) or physically reset or power off/on the router.
The reason for this is  that the IP/BRAS profile is set for the sync speed (cabinet->modem) when the router makes a pppoe connection; the sync speed is set from the DLM profile.  The DLM change is always automatic, though often slow.  Sometimes, when DLM updates itself and forces a resync (usually in the middle of the night), the pppoe connection from router->exchange is also broken.  In that case, the router automatically makes a new pppoe connection and the IP/BRAS proifile is updated.  However, often the resync at the cabinet->modem level is so quick that the router->exchange connection carries on unbroken.  In that case you can end up with a fast new sync speed, but with the old slower IP/BRAS profile; this is fixed by manual router disconnect/reconnect.

The above is what the bar says. It's been a while and wondered, maybe Apple changed the format for forums. Then got this nice big blank canvas to air my concerns. Went to school for Computer Science, BSEE, even worked at Analog Devices in Newton Massachusetts, where they make something for apple.
The bottom line is fast CPU = more FPU = more headroom and still can't figure out why the more cores= the slower it gets unless it's to get us in to a 6 core then come out with faster cores down the road or a newer Mac that uses the GPU. Also. Few. I'm the guy who said a few years ago Mac has an FCP that looks like iMovie on Steroids. Having said that I called the campus one day to ask them something and while I used to work for Apple, I think she thought I still did as she asked me, "HOW ARE THE 32 CORES/1DYE COMING ALONG? Not wanting to embarrass her I said fine, fine and then hung up.  Makes the most sense as I never quite got the 2,6,12 cores when for years everything from memory to CPU's have been, in sets of 2 to the 2nd power.  2,4,8,16,32,64,120,256,512, 1024, 2048,4196,8192, 72,768.  Wow.
