Render to HD compatible Apple TV format

I bought the Apple TV to watch my movies that I created using the Sony HD camera and Sony Vegas video editing software. Does anyone know what format to save or render the movies to in order to playback using the HD capabilities of the Apple TV? I can render mpg2 Quicktime and .wmv. I haven't found a combination of saving qualities that will work with the Apple TV!

You must produce h264/MP4 files with the following specifications:
Video formats supported
* H.264 and protected H.264 (from iTunes Store): Up to 5 Mbps, Progressive Main Profile (CAVLC) with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps (maximum resolution: 1280 by 720 pixels at 24 fps, 960 by 540 pixels at 30 fps) in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats
* iTunes Store purchased video: 320 by 240 pixels or 640 by 480 pixels
* MPEG-4: Up to 3 Mbps, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps (maximum resolution: 720 by 432 pixels at 30 fps) in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats
Audio formats supported
* AAC (16 to 320 Kbps); protected AAC (from iTunes Store); MP3 (16 to 320 Kbps); MP3 VBR; Apple Lossless; AIFF; WAV
Not sure the Vegas suite can do any of that. Your best bet might be to do initial edits with that and then transcode to an AppleTV format. Have a look at MPEGStreamclip for Windows at squared5.com, free utility for video conversion, Mac version has an AppleTv preset, not sure if the Window one does.

  • Troubleshooting Exporting Videos using QuickTime X, to an Apple TV Format.

    Hi every one!
Here is my problem, when exporting an .avi file to itunes, using QuickTime X, depending of the .avi file it seems, I can only have the iPhone Format Choice or (and it's the first time since 2 years) the Apple TV format available at last.
The .avi Files, that I have tried in the past, where all around 700 MO, all with all most the same settings.
I'm going to buy an Apple TV soon, but I would like to be sure that every file that I will export using QuickTime X, to iTunes in the Apple TV format will work.
Any idea why it's random like that?
Any tips to help me with?
Attached to this post, a Screenshot of my problem.
    Thanks!

I checked Hand Brake and the Wiki of it... I have to say that I'm a little bit lost in the settings when you export it to an Apple TV 2, or as an Apple Universal Format.... Which would olso work on an ATV 2...
What would be the best quality/settings that the Apple TV 2 would accept flowlessly?
Newer devices are backwards compatible with older device compression settings but older devices are not forwards compatible with the latest device compression settings. The original iPod video device was limited to 320x240 displays at 30 a max of 30 fps with an H.264 data rate of less than 1000 Kbps. The software was then upgraded a year later to support 640x480 display files at 30 fps and allowed H.264 data rates of 1700 Kbps/MPEG-4 data rates of 2500 Kbps. From then on, the devices have be continuously upgraded to handle larger and larger display at various frame rates with the same or greater data rates. For instance, the original TV device was limited to 720p video at 24/25 fps but only 540p (960x540) at 30 fps. To be completely universal, a file must be encoded for the oldest device that can play it. All newer devices can play these older files but usually do so by scaling the original file to the larger display size reducing their playback quality. On the other hand, the latest HD compressed files have data rates that exceed the playback capabilities of the older devices so these older device cannot play HD compressed files for newer devices. Think of it like the difference between a CD player and a BD player. Most BD players can play BDs, DVD, SVCDs, VCDs, and CDs but a CD player won't play VCDs, SVCDs, DVDs, or BDs.
As to the best video settings for any particular device, they would be the largest ecoded settings at the highest frame rate and higest data rate that the device can play. This willl provide the best video quality playback for the particular device being used. All lesser encode matrices, lessened frame and/or data rates potentially reduce your video playback quality but will still play. If your system includes DD 5.1 audio plyaback quality, then the best audio playback would be from a file that also contains an AC3 DD5.1 audio track. However, the device will also play an AAC DD Pro Logic 2, Stereo AAC, or Mono AAC audio track with decreasing audion source directionality. I prefer having both audio tracks available.
You seem to be missing the point that what plays back best on one device may not be the best playback settings for another device. You really need to read the specs for the device you plan to use. These specifications will give you the maximum acceptable settings for your device. All lesser settings will play on the device but with reduced audio and/or video quality. You can encode everything as a 320x240 H.264/AAC video file and it will play back on all devices. But the playback would only be "best" on the original 5th generation video iPod with the original software and "less than best" for all other devices marketed since then. In short, compare the secifications for all of the devices you plan to use the same file on and use the pre-set option for the device having the lowest setting spesifications if the specifications differ. However, as already stated, all "current" mobile device now support the mimimum 720p 30 fps Main Profile 3.1 encode preset (with all of the A5 chipped devices now maxed at 1080p 30 fps High Profile 4.1). Therefore, I will repeat one last time, I prefer the TV2 preset which supports all current mobile, iPad, and TV2 devices. If you have older "classic" devices, which you want the same file to play on, then use the preset compatible with that oldest device as your "universal" preset.

  • "Only files in Apple Loops format will be shown in the loop browser".

I recorded a Drum loop from my Korg m50 workstation into logic pro 9.
After recording i tried to import that loop into Apples loop library. After doing so i get this message.."Only files in Apple Loops format will be shown in the loop browser."
    What do i do?
    Please help.
    Thanks
    Rohan

I've recently gotten this error when I try to drag an audio file into the loops library (to create an apple loop.)
    Comes along with Result Code=-43.
I'm trying to quantize some rhythmic loops using flex, then turn them into apple loops for the library.
    My process:
    Take original audio.
    Flex it using slice mode.
    Bounce in place.
Drag new region into Loops browser.
    Errors ensue.

  • How do I Download from Itunes store using the Apple Lossless format?

I use my music on a home sterio and import locally from CD's to Windows using the Apple Lossless format only, to achieve the Highest quality sound. However, When I buy from Itunes store I can only get AAC format, which is low quality. How can I get Itunes to give me only Apple Lossless format?
Your help will b e appreciated.
    Thanks
    Phil

I do agree with what i have been said. I am a musician, i think AAC is definitely medium-low quality. I bought this year lots of AAC 256 for Itunes. I have been surprised. SO many times i need to go to the equalizer to counter-balance the weakness of this file format.
I advise you to do the following. Import a CD using Apple LossLess and then import a CD using AAC 256. You will see a HUGE difference.
Now i start to buy CD again in order to get the music Quality. Then i import my CDs to Itunes using Apple LossLess (920Kbps). You will ear that on Snares and Rides. Bass will sound more natural. Bass, Medium, Sharp will more balance with each other. You will hear instruments with more clarity especially when there are a lot of instruments. Because of that, you will not need to raise up the volume.
But more than anything... you will gain VOLUME in your files.
In general over the internet all the online music stores including Itune doesn't provide HD quality. AAC 256 is not enough. A track bought over Itune Store should weight 30 megabytes, not 5. And then you would decide to compress it or not.

  • How can I convert DVD- video into Apple's format so that it can be played and streamed from my Mac?

How can I convert DVD- video into Apple's format so that I can play the content on my Mac and also stream it to my Apple TV? A few years ago, I transferred all of my home videos onto DVD but now would really like to put these onto my Mac and stream them through Apple TV to watch on the "big screen". Any advice would be most welcome!! Thanks

    MPEG Streamclip.
Apple do not have their "own" format. You need to convert your DVDs to H.264 though.

  • Converting home movies to apple tv format

    One more question, please.
I converted my 1280 x 720 home movies to Apple TV format in iTunes and they were "downrezzed" to 960 x 540.
Why? And can I avoid this somehow?

I wouldn't worry about it. many people are concerned about the resolution without giving a thought to datarate. Your tv is limited to the bitrate it can play, at a fixed bitrate a 1280 x 720 movie will have less info per pixel (macroblock-technically) than a 960 x 540 so whilst there are more pixels in 1280 x 720 those in the 960 x 540 movie are higher quality and there is little difference, indeed my tests generally show 960 x 540 to be slightly better.
You could reduce the frame rate of 1280 x 720 to allow it to play on the tv, but this will likely introduce jittery motion.

  • Apple-date-format for Mail Stationary

my date for my mail stationary is not updating as it used to since i have upgraded to Mavericks
this was my code before: (works only with Mountain Lion)
    <span class="AppleStationeryDynamicElement" contenteditable="true" apple-content-type="date" apple-date-format="%b %1d, %Y">xxxxx</span>
this is my code now: (works only with Mavericks)
    <span class="AppleStationeryDynamicElement" contenteditable="true" apple-content-type="date" apple-date-format="EEE, MMM d, ''yy"></span>
any one have idea what shuld i use for the date format that would work both Mountain Lion and Mavericks?
    Thanks!

    Steve,
I think that you may have the "wrong" choice in the Systems Preferences/International preference pane. If this is set to "United Kingdom" then Mail will generate iCal events with the correct date.
However, if (like me) you customise this in any way, OS X creates a "Custom" profile. This is no longer recognised by Mail as using UK date formats and the program then seems to default to choosing US dates. So, if you are willing to lose your customisation and switch back to the standard "United Kingdom" choices this should work.
It is just a shame that you can't have a UK date format, and some customisation of (for instance) the date/time display.

  • What is the difference in apple disc formats and what is best to use

What is the difference in apple disc formats and what is best to use

Impossible to answer your question without knowing what you are attempting to achieve. Please be more descriptive when asking questions otherwise we are just guessing. However if you are going to use a HD exclusively for OS X then the best format is Mac OS Extended (Journaled).

  • DV Tape to Apple TV Format Help

I have some older DV Tapes that I transferred to the iMacs hard drive with FCE.
The codecs show it as DV/DVCPRO - NTSC, LLinear PCM, Timecode.
It is a 4:3 video and I would I like to convert this so I can play it on my thry my AppleTV.
When I convert it to an m4v file it loses the audio despite Quicktime being able to play
it with audio.  What would be the easiest way to convert this file to an APTV format?

I was able to keep my surround sound audio by selecting Current Settings in the Export Media window. I believe this did not perform any compression on the final output file as it generated the file very fast. I am using PavTube HD Video Converter to convert to Apple TV format with Dolby Digital Pass-through.

  • Any news on opening up the Apple Lossless format?

    Hi!
I am wondering if anyone can share some info regarding the "opening up" of the Apple Lossless format. Since this format is not open, it is not natively supported by the latest brand of multi channel receivers that now can decode a lot of audio formats - just not the Apple lossless format...
When will the specs be published, so that receiver vendors like Denon will be able to create native decoding support for the format?
    Thanks in advance,
    Vidar Moe ([email protected])

*When will the specs be published*
They have been published for a long time. It's a licensed product though, not open.
Denon could very easily incorporate this into their products if they chose to do so.
Many other vendors (Sonos, Slim Devices Squeezebox & Transporte to name a few) use it.

  • What is best windows compatible web share format once and for all?

Wmv looks good, but I don't want to buy flip4mac studio. The other formats I have tried look bad and are huge files. I have searched forum for answer in vain.

sorry to say, but there's no "best" ...
    * best for windows is .wmv (non Apple compatible, YOUhave to pay for an exporter)
    * best compatibility for all is a free upload service, as youtube, videogoogle, et al (.. hm.. quality..? )
best quality is h264, needs a free install of "Quicktime for Windows" on PC (some PCusers don't like to add QT on their fragile system) ...
    * best in means of cheap is iSquint, creates a good looking, small .mp4 (which some PC don't "like", allthough Windows is able to handle .mp4 outside any containers (mov/avi) ..) ...
PS: you'll find ~4000 video codecs out there, but no universal one, nor "best" ....

It is not common, but sometimes, when I want to delete files from external hard drive where they are housed and remove them from the catalogue of LR, get me a message warning me that the volume is not compatible with the Recycle Bin and files will be deleted permanently.
Yesterday I was making cleaning of the catalog and it gave me the message in all the deleted files, but today all normally works.
It has never given me this message with files that are in the internal hard drive and I have not done any change between yesterday and today in my albums, or its connection or anything, everything is exactly the same.
If it was timely alga, did a restart of the computer and continued giving me the message.
I have full access to the external drive from Finder and everything deleted from there goes to the trash normally, I checked it yesterday.
Why LR do me that? Am I doing something wrong? How can I fix this if I move?
The version I have LR is the 5.7 in an imac

  • Converting Movies to Apple TV Format

I am a new ATV owner with many home movies in AVI format on my Windows Vista PC. I have converted them to MPEG4 using Pinnacle Studio 12 and then I copy them into the iTunes Movie library. From there I need to use the "Create Apple TV Version" function. It starts and gets about 3/4 of the way through the movie and fails with the message "Error occurred while converting the file - there is not enough memory available." This is surprising as my PC has 4GB of RAM and my computer hard drive has over 100GB free (if it's looking for paging space) and my 160 GB ATV is only 1/2 full (but this should be irrelevant as it's not even synching yet). I called the Apple tech line and they could not help me and suggested I post here. Would appreciate any ideas from more experienced users. Thanks in advance.

Forget using the "Create Apple TV Version" in iTunes. I've had great success with MPEG Streamclip (http://www.squared5.com). It will convert to aTV format directly from AVI (and many other formats). Select "Export to MPEG-4" under "File", then iTunes in the dialogue box, then Apple TV (H.264). My Apple TV settings are "Limit Data Rate = 5Mbs, B-frames checked, Quality = 100%. It's never failed, will run in batch mode and great results. It will convert almost real-time on my wife's MacBook.

  • Home Movies to Apple TV Format ?

I had 67 reels of 8mm film spanning 25 years scanned in which created about 4.5 hours of video. I used iMovie and iDVD to create 3 DVDs with about 1.5 hours of video on each. I have chapters for every different part of the films resulting in about 90 chapters over 3 DVDs. Now I want all this content in iTunes and available in Apple TV. I'm not sure the best format so I'm looking for recommendations before I spend 672 hours converting these. So far I could:
    1) Put all 4.5 hours into one movie and have 90 chapters. I think this would be hard to find the chapters that I want using the current Apple TV software, and one large file might be harder to manage.
    2) Split the movie up into 90 individual movies by chapter. This would make finding a chapter very easy since it would be the title of the movie. Having 90 movies in the Apple TV movie section would be really bad since Apple TV can't currently group movies.
    3) Break the movies up into say three movies, with about 30 chapters each. This seams like a crappy compromise.
    4) I could have 90 movies, one per chapter, like option #2, but I could make them TV shows and episodes. That way with the current Apple TV software I could group them all as 90 episodes under one TV show which is easier to manage. I sort of liked this but I could not get my sample movies to show up as iTunes as TV shows even after changing the metadata to say they were TV shows. Am I missing something here ?
Has anybody done this or can you offer any suggestions ?

I wouldn't worry about it. many people are concerned about the resolution without giving a thought to datarate.
