Rendered movies won't play "...is not a movie file"

Hi -
The files I rendered can't be opened in Quicktime because "it is not a movie file". I rendered an MPEG4, H264 and Quicktime with No compression. None of them would play.
What causes this?
How can I fix it?

I tested QT with similar files that were made with AE7. There is no issue at all.
There's something with these files that were make with AE CS4.
I was just wondering if anyone else had similar issues crop up.

These are effects I used for the titles, but what could be the problem? I thought once I save it in QuickTime format, it was self-contained - it looks like it's looking for some iMovie files. Why does it need them, why did they disappear (since I know this used to play fine!), and what can I do to fix it (download those data files, and convert the thing to be truly self-contained and not need any external files)?

I thought once I save it in QuickTime format, it was self-contained - it looks like it's looking for some iMovie files.QuickTime (MOV) files can be saved as either "Standalone" or "Reference" files. When using the "Save As..." option in QT Pro, you are offered the choice. Other applications like iMovie may make the decision for you. For instance, when automatically sending a file from iMovie to iDVD, a reference movie is used rather than standalone version in order to more quickly open iDVD. In your case, it sounds like a reference movie is being played and that someone has "cleaned out" some of the "rendered" files that were saved as part of the original project. If the project files are still available but moved, you can try to "re-link" them. Or, if the project is still available, you could simply re-export your movie as a standalone file.

Puchased Songs/Movies Won't Play: Does not recognized authorization

I just purchased some songs and a movie on iTunes; When I try to launch the song and movie, I am being prompt with warning that machine is not authorized and to approve authorization. This machine is authorized.
I attempted to deauthorize-reauthorize as well as follow additional steps of doing a Disk Permissions Repair.
Any ideas ? Thank you in advance!

where people had tried the suggested fixes in the support pages for itunes and authorization. I have the same problem. I tried all the fixes and am waiting for a reply from itunes store support, but in that other thread the only things that those people said worked was completely reinstalling itunes. I haven't done that yet but likely will! I did an archive and reinstall and had problems; in the support pages they say that you should first deauthorize if you are going to reinstall the system and then authorize again after installing (I didn't know so didn't do that).

iM doesn't offer the export as mpeg2..
sooo, how did you accomplish an 'export' in that specific codec...?
the error you're discribing is usually when you try to play an iM-project file with missing parts....
what is the suffix of that file (Apple-I)..?

1 DV Movie Won't Play - - All other DV Movies Play Fine

Okay, so my DV Movie files play video and audio in iMovie 9 - - except one of them which does NOT play the audio track.
All of the DV Movies play video and audio in Quicktime so I know the audio is there, but iMovie doesn't play / recognize the audio track.
What else can I do to make this audio track play in iMovie?

You'll get your Chapters and Play All buttons working fine.

IDVD autoplay movie won't play in DVD player

My IDVD movie won't play in a DVD player when created in autoplay mode. It plays fine on my computer both in preview and on my computer's DVD player program and it works fine if I create a menu and button, just not if I create it in autoplay mode. I've tried it on my work compter and three DVD players and it won't play in any of them. Can anyone help, please?

I used a 16x Maxwell DVD-R. The same kind of disc worked fine with the movie when I had a menu.
I'm afraid I don't know what a Patchburn is.

It needs to be a DVD-R with iMovie 4.

ITunes Error: Cannot play bought iTunes movie from one day to the other "The selected movie won't play on your display."

just a few weeks ago I watched on my new iMac 5k Retina a long-ago-downloaded movie (iTunes content, HD, Billy Joel. Live at Shea Stadium). I had no issues watching it on the new wonderful display just a few weeks ago!
Today I wanted to resume the video and got the error "The selected movie won’t play on your display. This movie can be played only on displays that support HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection).".
Actually the movie plays for a few seconds and then the movie window gets black and the error message appears. Restarting iTunes does not help. Restarting the Mac also not.
How can this be fixed?
Additionally I get since I moved from my old iMac to the new one the iTunes error "Do you want the application “iTunes.app” to accept incoming network connections?" every time I start iTunes.

Selected movie won't play SOLVED

I had this problem trying to play a rented movie. Got the message The selected movie won't play on one of your connected displays. My problem was with a software which is made by INFOCUS for their projector. I removed it and now the movie plays even on the projector and without the software. I have seen that solution in this forum elsewhere.

Please note that to be able to play your purchased HD movies or videos, let us not forget some minor details. Ensure that your iTunes software is up-to-date. HD videos will only play if you have iTunes 10.6 or later as described in this article:

I have a similar issue. My Dell Latitude is running Windows Pro 8.1 and iTunes 11.1.3.8. It looks like it's playing, but it isn't.
Things seemed to work fine before the 8.1 update. I fear I will have to rollback to 8.0 because the sound no longer works on the computer unless you use the headphone jack.
Podcasts and music behave the same way, they appear to be playing, but the timer is not progressing for them either.
This may be the combination of 8.1 and 11.1.3.8

In OSX 10.9, Quicktime movies won't play

Plug-in not "visible" in list even though Quicktime is installed. In this OS, we cannot "reinstall" Quicktime because it's built into the OS. How can I get the QT videos to run inside Firefox?

You said that QuickTime movies won't play "inside Firefox". Do they play inside Safari or when you directly access a QuickTime Movie file that's been saved on your Mac ?
See the Firefox Support article, [[Use the QuickTime plugin to play audio and video]]. It has some test links and explains how to enable the QuickTime plugin in the Add-ons Manager, in case it's been disabled in Firefox.
Like you say, QuickTime is built into the operating system on Mac OS so if you can't enable the browser plugin in Firefox or if it's missing, your best bet would be a Mac forum such as https://discussions.apple.com/

Quicktime movies won't play on Apple Website

I formatted my HD and reinstalled Snow Leopard. Last night and this morning I was watching the videos on http://www.apple.com/business/theater/#activecorners?sr=hotnews.rss, but tnight when I went back there, the movies won't play, nor will any other movies on the entire website. All I get is a Quicktime Icon with a question mark in the middle of it. I have both Quicktime X and Quicktime Pro 7 installed, with Pro in the Utilities folder.

After loading the AppleMPEG2.Component into the Quicktime folder in the Library, everything started working again. I'm not sure if that's what made it start working again though.

I would be concerned too if the songs I purchased from iTunes were not downloading to my iPhone. You have taken some great troubleshooting steps already, and thank you for providing the details of the steps you too. I have a few additional suggestions to get it downloaded to your iPhone.
First, I recommend checking to see if the download was interrupted:
If your download was interrupted using your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
From the Home screen, tap the iTunes app.
For iPhone or iPod touch, tap More > Downloads. For iPad, tap Downloads.
Enter your account name and password if prompted.
Tap the blue download arrow to resume.

If the songs still do not download, next I recommend downloading the songs when connected to another network. For example, if you are using the cellular network, you could switch to Wi-Fi, or you could try an alternate Wi-Fi network. Ok nw the rented film is on the iPad which won't play and when I looked at the Mac I was greeted with an error message saying that the film could nt be transferred because the file had already been transferred somewhere else! Thing is I can see it on theioad and the Mac still!
Obviously the film Kees checking where it as you can't watch it in two places at the same time. I can understand that but I knw it's not anywhere else.
The only thing I can think of is if when time machine backs it up it thinks it's being watched!

The specs stated that it does record MPEG video.
The Mac mini is a super drive w/ + & - capability. I guess I'll have to buy another recorder to get this to work.
