Rendering Chroma 4:2:2 with color space 0-255

Hello Everyone.
Just as a warning I'm fairly new to video editing, so I will probably not say this right. I have a screen recording that I used FRAPS to collect, and then I packaged it into an .AVI container w/ a lararith codec , and a 24bit RGB color scheme in video dub. I have then opened and edited that video in Premiere Pro and want to export it. The problem that I'm having is screen recording has a LOT of color between 0-16 and 235-255, so any broadcast color space I use makes the video look awful. I was wondering if anyone knows how I can render out with a 0-255 color space and a decent chroma subsampling (my guess is 4:2:2).
Thank you everyone for your help.

No, you are asking the right question, and I understand your problem. I just can't recreate it.
I just took a really wild Quicktime video I downloaded from Videoblocks.com that isn't anywhere close to being broadcast safe, and I exported it to a Windows Media file.
The first picture is a screenshot from the video. (it is a set of lower thirds in one video - I am just supposed to use one at a time of course.
The second picture is the Reference monitor from frame 12;24
I exported the sequence to a Windows Media file and then imported it, putting it right on top of the other video on the sequence so I could make sure to be on the exact same frame. The third picture is the reference monitor from the WMV file on the sequence.  As you can see, there is not much difference. Some, but you have to look closely.
So, my question to you, since I do not use FRAPS, is what are your sequence setting? Did you just drop a clip on the New button to create a new sequence with the exact right settings? And, are you making the mistake of using the renders to help you export?
The problem is that I don't understand your source material. I guess I could download FRAPS from somewhere and give it a try? I am just a bit busy with other things today.

  • PS CS with color space set to Prophoto RGB - will ACR change embedded profiles?

Probably a foolish question but my problem is that I have a mixture of files:
My own files (all initially RAW (NEF) which I import into ACR as 16 bit Prophoto RGB ).
Files from family members and from slide scanning performed elsewhere - they are in 2 groups:
The first of these from elsewhere acquired files were all JPEGs that I converted to Tiffs in Bridge before setting out to edit them-- all unfortunately 8bit and sRGB.
The scanned files were scanned as tiffs but also 8bit and sRGB.
My normal procedure is that I in ACR I have set the files to 16 bit and Prophoto RGB. In PS the same but also to preserve embedded profiles. I have the impression that working with the "foreign" files in 16 bit does give me more room for editing but that I should continue with the embedded profiles.
Is there a way to ensure that the color profiles are not changed in ACR even if the line in the middle below says 16 bit Prophoto RGB (I have PS CS5). I would hate to have to change this line each time I view a file in ACR. I would hate more to loose the editing facilities in ACR as these acquired files do need som special care before they are mixed with my own in our family albums. I prefer the 16 bit Prophoto RGB option for my own files as I like to play with them - i.e. apart from including them in Photo Albums.
I do see that a logical way is to process all the acquired files before going to my own files but it is so much more practical for me to work with a mixture of the files sorted chronologically - a year or month at the time.
I would even consider getting an upgrade to CS6 if this version could help me.
    Can someone enligthen me?
    Thanks, Git

    Hi, Tom.
The real issue here is getting accurate color. You can't get accurate color by setting your monitor profile to sRGB. sRGB is a virtual color space that doesn't describe the exact color gamut of any physical device. But, in order to display sRGB or any color space accurately, you need to get a characterization of your monitor.
Here is an AWESOME way to get access to a colorimeter: http://www.lensrentals.com/rent/pantone-huey-colorimeter Looks like for $32 you can rent this for a week. Go in on this with a friend and profile both of your monitors and hardly pay a thing. If you have a reasonably good quality LCD monitor, this custom profile you make will be fairly accurate for many months. At the very least, this is way more accurate than having no regular calibration at all.
    Hope this helps!

  • Color space AE CS5 Versus AE CS4 = !#%%$

    Hello,
I'm trying to export HD uncompressed 10-bit with color space HDTV (rec.709) clips of VFXs footage that were done on AE CS5.
My main project file to which I want to integrate them in on AE CS4 which I am using (the AE CS5 render are made by someone else that has it).
My project file settings is in HDTV (rec.709) 16bit with mostly cineform clips, but with a few other VFXs shot that were renderer in HD uncompressed without problems (using CS4). I plan to them export my main project into HD uncompressed
We tried to batch of export:
First one was done in CS5 with HDTV (rec.709) in export settings but the project settings wasn't set to HDTV (rec.709) by the VFXs guy.
When I imported those clips in my CS4 main project there was difference in color (more golden) and blacks (more crushed).
You can it with the blacks's difference on the girl's hair and the side planel of the plane and the golden is less ovious on the picture quality but you see it a bit on the woman's face.
I then proceeded to check color space, and it was imported by default by AE in sRGB IEC611966-2.1.
I then changed it to HDTV rec.709 using interpret footage; it was a closer match, but not quite.
I then noticed that all my project's clips, including the HD uncompressed one that I rendered (under CS4) from work done by another VFX artist, were all in HDTV rec.709 YCrCb, but the the imported clips I was trying to match were in HDTV rec.709 only with no YCrCb mention afte them.
I talked with film's colorist and VFXs artist that worked with those projct file from which all the problematic shots comes (because problem is isolated to project file this person worked on), because we both over our head in color space territory.
We came up the the possible solution that the project setting might have been altered for quicker workflow and not set rigth again.
We checked and color space wasn't set in setting; colorsit suggested that if it's not set in settings no mather if you set it in your export settings, AE won't allow it and that's why it might have forced RGB, hence the sRGB IEC611966-2.1. It was in 32bit float instead of 16 bit, so that's ok, we initialy suggestedthat it might have been reduced to 8bit for quicker workflow.
After this, we proceded to re-render in CS5, bu we found a weird thing that we both don't realy grasp.
After he did the 2nd render (in CS5 still), he tried importing clips with old ones, to compare them to my unafected originals clips, in my CS4 project that he converted in CS5.  It was worst. He then switched off the "blend color using 1.0 gamma"; which my project file didn't have on in CS4. The files are in 32bit float and color space was HDTV (rec.709), but since it's not embed in HD uncompressed files he set them manualy after importing them.
The OLD render batch was matching, but not the NEW ones.
Then he tried importing both render batch in the original project file he exported them from, and it was the NEW batch that now matched.
He's now doing test in my main project file in CS4 which is were I'd ultimately like it to work in,
but if anyone could gives us pointer as to why this is happening and how to make it match with no hassly tat would be great help.
Thank you for your time and interest.
    Frédéric

You've lost me, honestly, but obviously you seem to be close to the solution. Your colorist is mistaken, though, about how AE handles color profiles. It doesn't discard or enforce profiles, it really seems you just forgot to carry them somewhere. Also, since these are different machines, maybe a specific profile was not available. eitehr it was never installed or it is blocked due to permission issues...

  • Multiprocessing color space render issue

After installing the newest update of After Effects CC 2014 I am having troubles with my renders while using multiprocessing.
The color space I'm working in is a linearized 32bpc sRGB IEC61966-2.1  When I render without multiprocessing turned on, the render turns out fine, but with it turned on the resulting render is way too bright, as though the gamma has been lifted way too high. I would really like to be able to use multi-processing, since it cuts my render times down to a fifth of what they would be otherwise. Any advice would be much appreciated.
Also, just for fun I took my file back into After Effects CC (12.2)  and tried rendering it with multiprocessing without changing any settings and the render turned out just fine, making me think that this is specifically a CC 2014 problem.

This is a bug that was introduced in After Effects CC 2014.1 (13.1). My apologies about this.
First things first: to work around this bug you will need to disable multiprocessing in order to get a color-accurate render, via either RAM preview or via the Render Queue. Alternately, you can use multiprocessing but to get expected colors you must disable color management (set the project's working space to None), or if using Rec. 709 or sRGB you can leave the working space enabled and disable only the Linearize Working Space option.
If you choose to leave multiprocessing enabled and disable color management, you can create the same color transform by applying the Color Profile Converter effect. For example, before rendering via the render queue, pre-compose your final comp and apply the effect to the pre-comp.
We will evaluate a fix for this bug for a future update to After Effects CC 2014. An update is scheduled to release soon (this week or next), but a fix for this bug won't be included; this will have to wait for the next update.
Under the hood, here's what happened to cause this bug:
In After Effects CC 2014.1 (13.1), a color transform to Rec. 709 is automatically added to frames delivered via Dynamic Link when color management is enabled in the project. This is a new behavior in this version, which solved a problem with gamma and/or color shifts when sending frames to Premiere Pro or Adobe Media Encoder, which assume that all incoming Dynamic Link frames are Rec. 709.
When multiprocessing is enabled in After Effects, it uses Dynamic Link to communicate with the subprocesses. In this case, After Effects knows what color profile is being used; no additional color correction is necessary.
Combining these two behaviors we get this bug: an unnecessary color transform to Rec. 709 is being applied to frames rendered when multiprocessing is enabled. We failed to take the multiprocessing case into account when we added the new behavior.
If your project's working space is already Rec. 709 or sRGB (which are functionally the same), you wouldn't notice a difference, since the additional color transform results in no change. Using any other profile would cause a color shift. Enabling the Linearize Working Space option with any profile will introduce a gamma shift.
Again, my apologies about this bug.

  • Help with working with color and profiles

Like many others, I suspect, I am having trouble managing the colors on my iMac to match the prints I get. I have a few questions, but first, some background:
    1. Screen calibrated with Huey Pantone. Calibration was done with monitor brightness all the way to lowest. I don't use Shades or anything else. I have my Display Profile set to this profile. I'd be happy to post my .icc profile if I knew how. I can email it to anyone who can help here.
    2. I have been sending my prints to Costco with the option of turning OFF their Auto Correct. To try to get things to match, I downloaded Costco's printer profiles from http://www.drycreekphoto.com/icc/Profiles/Minnesota_profiles.htm#MN (Eden Prairie, Glossy and Lustre paper profiles).
    3. I shoot photos with a Canon XTi with color space set to sRGB. I am using iPhoto 08.
    So here are my questions:
    1. I loaded the Costco printer profile icc files into /Library/ColorSync/Profiles/Displays. When I open ColorSync, I see them under Profiles/Displays. However, in ColorSync/Devices/Displays/iMac, when I go to change the profile, I navigate to these files but the computer just beeps and won't take them. I thought all icc files could be used by monitors and printers - can these Costco iccs only be used for printers (I noticed the Costco files are 4MB, the other display iccs are 4KB)?
    2. How does iPhoto handle color spaces? I import my photos off my CF card. Under iPhoto / Prefs / Advanced, I have both Copy Items and Embed ColorSync Profiles checked. Which color profile is it embedding? The one from the camera (some generic sRGB) or the one my display is using (the Huey)?
    3. As a test, I exported my photo as a full size TIFF (a 3.3MB jpeg became a 28MB tiff). I opened the TIFF in Preview. Preview / Tools / Assign Profile came up as "Camera RGB Profile" (so I think this answers question 2 but I'm not sure). While in Preview, if I now change the Display Profile (from Huey to Adobe RGB), the whole screen changes, including the photo I'm looking at in Preview - shouldn't Preview hold the photo the same since it's using a different color profile?
    4. I set the Display Profile back to Huey. In Preview, I go back to my photo and under Tools / Assign Profile I assign the profile my Huey profile (instead of Camera RGB). I save this as a jpeg and reimport into iPhoto. When I compare these two photos side by side in iPhoto, they look indistinguishable. Why, if on the original import iPhoto embedded the Camera RGB profile into the photo and I make a copy assigning the Huey profile do they look identical? There's no reason to assume that the Camera RGB and Huey profiles are the same! Or is it some trick where the Display Profile is overriding everything?
    5. Lastly, I reopened the original TIFF export in Preview and assigned it the Costco profile (happened to use the glossy one). Lo and behold, what appears on the screen is a much closer version to what I got back as a print. Finally, as one last tweak, I changed my Display Profile from Huey to Adobe RGB and the picture I saw in Preview was closer still to what I got back from Costco. I changed the Display back to Huey, kept the Costco profile assigned and saved my TIFF back to a JPEG. I imported into iPhoto and compared - it looks much closer to my Costco print.
So I'm utterly confused. How do professionals manage their color workflow? Is my Huey calibration whacky? Why, if I assign a color profile to something in Preview, does it really depend on what Display Profile I have set (I thought profiles managed color, but it looks like it's relative).
I apologize for the rather long post, and very much appreciate any help and suggestions here!
    Thanks!

  • Color space question for photoshop cs on mac os10

I'm sure this has been beaten to death here before. I've been dealing with color space issues for months now, and I'm about at my wits end.
I realize that I should be saving in sRGB in order to get the same looking photo on the web that I get in photoshop. I go image-mode- convert to profile- destination space- profile: srgb profile. I've tried saving for web. I check "ICC" when I do that. When I just save an image as a jpeg (from a tiff), I check the box that says, "embed color profile." Still, my images look washed out on my website (which I made with iweb)- which I'm trying to put my images in a new web interface (flash palette) and my images STILL look washed out. The weird thing is, I NEVER have this issue when I upload images to photobucket or to the photography forum that I frequent.
What the heck am I doing wrong??
    Thanks,
    Hope

    >> images are still a bit washed out with a warmish/ yellow cast to them, particularly, my black and white images
Here is a simple test to help evaluate if the monitor profile is reasonably good:
Open a RGB file in Photoshop (flatten if not already flattened).
    Press M key> Drag a selection> Com+Shift+U (Desaturate).
Com+Z (to toggle back and forth).
If the unsaturated selection looks neutral you've got a reasonably fair monitor profile.
If selection has color casts (not neutral) -- you have a bad monitor profile
    +++++
Here is a simple test to help evaluate if a bad monitor profile is whacking out your Photoshop color:
Monitors/Displays (control panel)> Color> highlight AppleRGB or sRGB (don't run Calibrate), quit and reboot.
If the Photoshop colors are back under control, then the problem was most surely a bad monitor profile go back into Monitors/Displays> Color and Calibrate a good profile highlight (load) sRGB, or preferably, the monitor's OEM profile as a starting point.
If you are using a puck, it is likely defective; or your monitor hardware is the culprit...search it on Google by model number

  • Save PNG as gray color space

    Hi all,
I've searched high and low for a good answer to this, but no luck so far:
I have an AI file that I wish to save as a mask for an app.
    The image has to be:
    Format:               PNG
    Color space:        Gray
    Alpha Channel:    No
I have set the following for my AI file: Document raster effect settings: Colormode: Grayscale
I have changed Edit -> Edit colors -> Convert to grayscale (but the "Convert to grayscale" text is not grayed out the next time I look in the menu, problem?)
I then save the file for Web and Devices as a PNG-24 or PNG-8 (Grayscale, no dither) but no matter how I save it the file info still says that the "Color Space" of the file is RGB. I can't get it to save the file with Color Space: Gray.
I am doing somthing wrong, but what?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
    Kind regards,
    Smulan

    Thanks for your answer Larry!
I was afraid of that... I tried everything.
However, I still have a PNG file on my Mac that has "Color Space: Grey" when I look att it in file information.
    Incorrect file with RGB:
Correct file with Gray (not created by me):
Sorry about the Swedish . "Färgrymd" is "Color Space"
So there is some information stored in the correct file that I seem to be unable to save using AI. Maybe I need to use some other program... The files I created with Grey scale and saved are useless when creating the mask unfortunately.
    Kind regards,

  • What Rendering intent is used when exporting with a different color space?

    Hi,
I would be ever so grateful if any one can tell me what rendering intent is used by LR4 when exporting using a custom colour space as there is not an option as there is with the print module.
    Thanks.

Actually, an RGB color space to RGB colorspace is always only Relative Colorimetric...and adding Perceptual would only work with certain V4 ICC color spaces (you can find perceptual V4 color spaces for sRGB and ProPhoto I think but I'm not sure they would work in Lightroom anyway).
When using an RGB print output profile you can select either Perceptual or Relative and have the intents actually applied.
    True.
The case of interest to me is when I have to print a lot of files using a third-party profile and maintain the original filename so it appears on the back.  That is why I made the request more than a year ago.
The problem with the Print module is that it clobbers the filename but does allow 2 choices for the rendering intent.  Having to deal with weird filenames creates a mess when matching, say, 50 prints with custom notecards.

  • Color Space Issue with Wide-Gamut monitor

Since getting my new (and carefully calibrated) LaCie 324 monitor, I have noticed that RAW (and maybe other) images exported from Lightroom as
sRGB jpegs look washed out and slightly green when viewed outside of Lightroom (IE8, Firefox, ACDSee, windows 7 viewer). It seems not to matter whether the external application horors embedded color space profiles or not, since the unmanaged ones assume sRGB.
When I bring one of these jpegs into PhotoShop it still looks bad, and not what I see in Lightroom. However, if I Assign the Adobe RGB profile to the image, it immediately looks like the Lightroom version. And if I then Convert that image to sRGB and save it, it looks fine everywhere, even on an uncalibrated standard Dell TN LCD display.
Any ideas what I might be seeing here. A friend with the same monitor has the same problem, which is what is leading me to suspect the monitor.
The first image here is converted from Lightroom with sRGB color space. The second was first assigned the Adobe RGB color profile and then converted and saved out again as a jpeg.
    Converted Only

I downloaded and ran the program. My version number appears to be 2.1 if I read the numbers right.
I am still at a loss as to why my sRGB jpegs only look right if I assign the wrong profile to them.
Here are the settings in Windows 7 for color management. The highlighted profile is the one just created for my monitor. Display 2 is my main display. Note the "viewing conditions" setting on the advanced tab. Do you think the rendering intent might be at fault here? In Lightroom, should I use Perceptual over Relative or vice versa?

How to set color space to JPEG image with Java advance Imaging.
is there any API in JAI which support to set color space.

I'm definately no guru, but this is how you can change it.
CTRL + ALT + Click on the part of the component that you want to change. This brings up the Hidden Dom Inspector, background of component will be surrounded with a red outline (Make sure the red outline is surrounding the part of the tabset you want to change), Now you go to properties sheet and click the ellipses next to rules property this will pop up a dialog you look in this list (At the top) to see the default style classes that are affecting the rendering of the component outlined in red. (You will be able to select different sections of a single component) then you just rewrite the style class that you want to change in your Stylesheet (You will not find the styleclass that you want to change because it is a part of your theme .jar but as long as you name it exactly the same and place in your stylesheet it will override the theme .jar style classes) it's actually very easy -- you were right should be a piece of cake for a guru. Don't have the link handy but you can check out Winston's Blog on changing Table Formatting to get this information...It is EXTREMELY useful if you want your apps to have a custom look and not default that comes with Creator Themes.
Hope this helps you out God knows others have helped me alot!

  • Recommended color space to use with my D50

    Hi -
I'm pretty new to Mac and I'm now finding time to work with digital photos taken with my Nikon D50. Having read up on some things, I realize Mac OS and iPhoto can match the color space of the imported photos as an attempt to keep colors consistent between camera, computer, and eventually the printer. I was wondering what is a recommended color space to use when shooting. Nikon offers 3 choices - IIIa ( sRGB with a boost to green ), Ia ( sRGB ) and II ( Adobe RGB ). I believe their IIIa is my default and I have not changed it. I've noticed, however, that when I took a picture of my daughter in her prom dress outdoors in natural sunlight, it rendered it's magenta color as more red than magenta. Would Adobe RGB be better ? I read some articles here on color and I believe somewhere in the article it said the Adobe RGB color space has a broader color gamut than sRGB.
    Any opinions ?
    Thanks in advance,
    Bill

I don't have a Nikon (I use Sony's) and I find my cameras output matches up well with sRGB. iPhoto seems to use sRGB as well. Adobe RGB comes up very saturated, too saturated for my taste. When I use Adobe. I set Adobe to sRGB as well.
Magenta is a tough color and many fabrics reflect infrared and/or uv band and some camera sensors can pick that up. You may find the same effect with flowers.
Gamut depends more on where you plan to output the images. A broader gamut is not always the best thing for displays but may work well for printing. Personally I find sRGB works well for me.

  • Color problem with ProPhoto RGB color space

    Hi, everyone,
I have wery special problem I think. I use MacBook pro 15" with retina display, adobe Photoshop CC and when I export RAW (from Nikon D7000) from Lightroom 5 to Photoshop with settings: 16 bit TIF, color space: ProPhoto RGB I have a problem with displaying the correct colors. As you can see in this picture:
My problem are some "green" artefacts in absolutely black and white picture. I tried myself to solve this problem and found the following facts: when I convert picture into Adobe RGB or sRGB color space is everything OK - without green artefacts.
But here is one important fact: I have calibrated monitor by datacolor spyder4elite and problem with ProPhoto RGB incorrect color displaying is only when the color calibration configuration is loaded. When I change my display calibration to standard apple color LCD profile than is everything OK.
But using uncalibrated monitor and also Adobe RGB color space are no right solutions for me.
My question is why I have problem with displaying ProPhoto RGB color space in photoshop under calibrated monitor profile and can anybody help me please?
    Thanks for answers.

That's a classic example of the basic problem with 16 bit color. There is no solution that I know of.

    Do the following:
Print a test page from the printer. Perhaps the print head needs cleaning via its maintenance facility.
Let the printer manage colors, not PSE
    Calibrate the monitor

  • What are the steps to using camera & color space matching on footage with multiple cameras?

    Hi there,
I am new to speedgrade, and need to use the Camera and Color Space Matching technique to automatically color correct my sequence which contains footage from multiple cameras. I have watched all the videos on speedgrade on AdobeTV and lynda.com that I can find, but haven't been able to find one that actually shows me how to do so. Can anyone point me to a video/tutorial where I could learn the steps for the process or outline them for me if that is easier?
    Thanks!

I'm in the same boat.  There is a new 'camera matching' function that premiered at NAB 2013, but when will it be actually available...?   As to your original question, look up getting a proper White and Black balances with each camera first. Learn how to work with HSL and RGB values etc, and I think Karl Seoule has some videos that cover this under 'Color Finesse' vids at Adobe TV.  Also check out the '3-Way Color Corrector' tuts and "Secondary Color Correction' tuts as well.  And finally either on Adobe TV or Creative Cow there is on video that actually talks about matching either 2 shots or 2 cameras as well.
All this is to say here is no easy/simple way.  I'm hoping when Adobe introduces the Color Matching in Speed Grade we can just use stills as reference in Speed Grade, develop 'looks' that match the cameras and then apply the looks in Premiere without having to use the huge .dpx files that we have to use in Speed Grade now, but that may just be part of the process.

Regardless of how the presets are set in the Version Export or the Presets, it will only come in to Photoshop as AdobeRGB.

Well, to answer my own question, I now have it on good authority, actually the best authority, so good I can't say WHO, that there is NO way to specify a color space when using "Open in External Editor". Other than writing a script.
Hopefully this is an oversight, and will be in the next update!
