Rendering in FCP problems

When I render a file it shows as rendered. The minute I try to play it all turn red and I have to start over. It is also taking FOREVER to render. I never had this problem before and I have dumped my FCP Thumbnail cache, reset and renamed my scratch disk, nothing works. HELP. I can't work with any files. IT is not file specific. I tried a different file source everything.

At this point it would be prudent to ask what flavor of video you are working with and what your sequence settings might be -- and what you are doing to the video to cause it to have to render.

  • Rendering in FCP + Watching QT files online = Crashing

Whenever I am rendering in FCP (and sometimes even when I am not), if I open a Quicktime file online it causes my computer to freeze.
I know that FCP is QT too, but is there a way to avoid this...i.e. change settings, anything?
Take pity on the ignorant. Thanks.

it would appear to be a problem with your installation of your web browser and its associated libraries. how long has this been happening? was there a specific application or third-party plugin that you installed recently that may have caused this? perhaps an incompatibility with an older plugin or similar that now conflicts with a recent system update.
    lots of possibilities.

  • Any suggestions RE: aftermarket cards to accelerate rendering for FCP?????

Any suggestions RE: aftermarket cards to accelerate rendering for FCP? I will be purchasing a Mac Pro system when FCP6 gets released.
I'm about to come over from Adobe Pre Pro2 & the Matrox Card(which added a tremendous amount of RT to Premiere)
What cards would you recommend to do the same in a Mac Pro?
    Are they reliable?
My budget for a card is under $2000.
One with some aditional inputs & outs wouldn't hurt but my main concern is as little rendering as possible.
I will be doing mostly DV, but within a year or so will be doing HDV.
Here's your chance to turn a PC guy,
    Steve from NY

Their cards will enable MORE effects to be RT for certain codecs, like HDV and DVCPRO HD. The 3-way color corrector is an RT effect already. But what also helps with RT effects, mainly with PiP and multi-layers is a really fast RAID array. MULTIPLE STREAMS is the term used for multiple layers of video. So with a single firewire 400 drive, you can get one stream of DVCPRO HD. But with a 5 drive RAID, you can get about 6 streams.

  • Rendering and lagging problems with FCP  X

    Hello,
    I am working on a  Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 (11D50b) -  Processor  2.4 GHz Intel Core i5 - Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 256 MB and Memory  8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3.
My 30 minute project has been completed but every time I reopen it, there is a short sequence that always needs rendering. It takes a very long time for this sequence to render and FCP X regularly crashes and slows down. The software is very slow and sometimes non responsive.
This is my first try with FCP X. I've been working with FCP 6 and changed to FCP X recently. I’ve imported a lot of jpg and mp4 files. I import with proxy and optimized files and analyzed preferences. I’ve tried running my project with my hardrive as well as my external hardrive.
FCP X is generally lagging and unstable. It also slows down my computer.

mp4 files. I think that is not a good idea to use that format with FCPX. With my camera I have the options to use mov. (native for FCPX) or mp4. I use mov.

  • FCP 5 RT sequences now have to be rendered in FCP 6?

    Hi:
We upgraded from Final Cut Studio 1 to FCS 2 a week ago to upgrade Final Cut Pro to 6.0.4 to be able to read XDCAM EX clips a client sent us. That all worked fine.
But I'm encountering problems when I open older projects and sequences. Our main focus is motion graphics, which we create in After Effects, and we often render to the Animation codec for best quality. After rendering a composition we'll often go back and tweak something, then render out just those few seconds and edit the revision into the overall animation in FCP. This always worked fine in FCP 5.0 and earlier. I'd make a sequence with the same settings as the rendered Quicktimes (usually 720x480, D1 pixels, field dominance-none, Animation codec) and drop those into the sequence with no problems.
Today, however, I opened up a project and a Sequence I'd created using the Animation codec, and it showed a solid red bar for the whole 7 minute animation (except for two tiny slivers of blue at the fade up and fade out.) The canvas says Unrendered when I try to play it. This same sequence played fine in FCP 5 ten days ago.
I'm not attempting to print this to tape or anything. I just want to edit the pieces together to view the whole animation realtime and output a complete Quicktime for compressing to a DVD or whatever.
As a test I made a new sequence from scratch (720x480, D1 pixels, field dominance-none, Animation codec) and dropped a clip (720x480, D1 pixels, field dominance-none, Animation codec) into it and got the same result; the clip had to be rendered. I then went ahead and rendered the clip. I opened the resulting clip from the Render folder in Quicktime player, and it identified the clip as 720x480, Apple Animation Codec. So FCP compressed the clip to the same size and format it already was.
Older sequences using the Photo JPEG codec behave as normal; the sequence plays real time with no rendering required.
Was there some change in FCP 6 that prevents me from playing these Animation codec Quicktimes realtime? I'm not going to be happy if a bunch of old sequences suddenly become unplayable.
    Thanks.

Well, that is weird, but I don't seem to have that problem. I made a new sequence in FCP 6.0.4 with the above settings, added NTSC bars and exported a self-contained movie. I brought that QT back into FCP and added it back to the timeline from which it was generated, and it doesn't require rendering for playback, displaying a dark grey bar.
As I said, my main problem seems to be opening FCP 5 projects in FCP 6, though there are some minor problems with sequences created from scratch in FCP 6. In FCP 6 I reassembled the simple edit I'd done in FCP 5 and added fades at the beginning and end, which had to be rendered; the rest of the sequence showed the dark grey bar. When I scrub the timeline it scrubs very smoothly except at the beginning and end where those rendered fades are. And then, even though those fades have been rendered, when my playback gets to that fadeout it stops and gives the "One or more frames were dropped during playback" error message. I've tried the renders on two different drives, both of which are plenty fast to handle the 20-30 MB/sec data rate.
    Annoying.
Is it safe to upgrade to FCP 6.0.5?

  • Constant Re-Rendering in FCP

    Hello,
To the best of my knowledge I've matched my LiveType and FCP settings. I imported my LiveType file into FCP so that when I need to make changes to the LiveType file it automatically updates in FCP. Works great!
Here's my problem....any time I make an edit in LiveType, I have to constantly re-render in FCP. Is there any way to edit LiveType files and not have to re-render all the time in FCP?
I'm assuming this is because LiveType only use the Animation compressor and I have a different compressor in FCP. I can't use the Animation compressor in FCP for my project. It doesn't work well at all.
I'm using HDV 1080i60 setting in both LiveType and FCP with field dominance set to Upper(odd) in both programs. Using the HDV1080i compressor in my FCP sequence.
Also I'm using unlimited RT in FCP

You can't export LiveType to match FCP settings unless you use the Animation compressor in FCP because LiveType only uses the Animation compressor.
That's wrong you can export out of Live Type using lots of different variations, but you lose the alpha channel, and while most LT graphics are created for the specific use of the alpha channel, there are full screen graphics that don't need it and there are other ways to key graphic elements such as a luma key.
Again, even if I match the settings from Motion and FCP, if I trim the Motion file in FCP, I still have to re-render to get rid of orange in Timeline.
I just want to be able to edit in Final Cut and play sequence in real time without having to always re-render
Change your FCP RT settings to Unlimited, and lower your playback settings is an option you have.
Or If you want to see it use option-p and the area will playback a frame at a time so you can see what it looks like.
Other than that this is simply called editing. Editing requires rendering. It's part of the process. There is no editing workflow in existence that doesn't require rendering at some point.

  • Speeding up preview Rendering in FCP 7

    Hi All,
I have been working with a lot of 1080p HD video where I've been applying a bunch of color correction and filters to give the video a "film look" and to buff up some badly white-balanced video.   Most commonly, I've been stacking two tracks of the same video, each with a Color 3-Way filter applied and composited with "overlay" or "add" or some amount of blending.  Sometimes there will be one or two other filters applied as well, such as vignette or a gamma correction.
My problem is I've been finding the amount of time needed to render a "preview" of video every time I make a small change to this setup to be a drain on my workflow.   For just 30 seconds or so of video, I must wait several minutes for a preview to render.   I'm taking a lot of coffee breaks and things are progressing very slowly.
By "rendering" I mean renderding those segments of the video that are marked by the orange line- video which plays, albeit very jerkily. I am usually rendering to get a sense of the look of transitions, and the expressons of my subjects' faces at these moments- so I don't like the way the "orange line" preview look.  I don't usally get the red line.  Some of my blends that don't have color three-way applied are tagged green.
I have a Dual Core 2009 Mac Pro 2.66Ghz tower with 5GB of ram and the video card it came with.  I'm using only one monitor.  I have FCS 3 and FCP 7.   I have tons of HD space available (200 GB out of 1 TB left on my main drive and a 2 TB scratch drive with about 800 GB used for TimeMachine and the rest partitioned for video.  I'm not using it yet, though.)   I usuallly run FCP with little or no other software in the background.   The video source I'm using is HDV 1080p30 (shot at 1440x1080, but  16:9) or 1080p24 (some of my source video came from a second camera.)  I have about 6 hours of video that I'm working with now, and have not, therefore, converted it to another format for editing purposes as this would take a long, long time.   I set the render settings to RGB, which doesn't seem to speed things up much.
I'm looking for advice on how to speed up my preview render times (I'm not worried about compressor or QuickTime conversion render times as that can be done in batches overnight).   Should I be choosing a different codec?  Should I be rendering and editing at a different resolution (this seems to me to take even longer.)  I'd be willing to spend a few hundred dollars for a new video card, if it came to that, but that's obviously my last recourse.   Do I need more RAM?   Are there some settings that I should change?  Should I bite the bullet and convert my whole mess 'o video to ProRes 4:2:2 or something of the sort?
    Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks for the suggestion of OPT-P.   I forgot about that.
What I've done in the past is make and render a "color test sequence" featuring little clips that I'll commonly use.  I then edit the whole darn thing with no compositing at all (leaving a "gap" between tracks for the future compositing) eyballing the changes by looking at my "color test sequence."
The problem with this is, I use color shifts and "film look" tricks a lot in my videos, and it's not always possible to guess what the effect is going to look like short of rendering.   I was hoping to figure out a way of speeding this up.    Moreover, the new Mac Pros are not all that much faster than my current one.
    Oh well.

  • Mystery.  jpeg stills require rendering on FCP timeline??

I'm co-editing a film with a partner on the other side of the continent. We are using a lot of stills. I use GraphicConverter to re-size the 300dpi stills to 72dpi. (300dpi stills slow down FCP considerably, and take a lot longer to render.)
My 72dpi versions are working just fine. Do not require rendering on the timeline (the green line above) ... so I can set keyframes and plan movements, requiring rendering only when I'm satisfied.
My partner has done the same thing, with the same still in fact, in GraphicConverter ... but when he brings that 72dpi still into his FCP it requires rendering (red line) before he can even work with it. Ironically, the 300dpi original stills DON'T require rendering (but will, I'm sure, slow down his work to a virtual stall when he gets a number of those stills on the same timeline).
A mystery? Is there perhaps something we are missing in the FCP preferences, or the timeline settings? The timeline settings are set exactly the same on both systems (HDV 1080i60).
Any help would be most appreciated,
    Ben

I had a somewhat similar problem once and it turned out to be some bizzare naming scheme a PC used to name files sequentially.
Try taking picture A and making your GC version. Have him take picture A and make his GC version. Have him zip the image, email it to you and then you open both in GC and compare their specs. Off-hand I can't think of anything in FCP that would affect this but I'm not sure.
It could be something innocuous like a resource fork for a thumbnail or his are RGB and yours are CMYK or something.

  • Field dominance upon import into fcp problem

having changed the project setttings in livetype to comply to pal video with lower field dominance so that i can use it in my dv-based projects, i've tried both to open the livetype project directly into final cut pro and also to render the movie in livetype and import that into final cut pro.
in both cases, fcp sets field dominace to upper field.
on the cinema display lcd screen that doesn't seem to make any difference, but surprises lurke when outputting to dvd ....
in an attempt to bypass the problem i've changed project settings to 'none' and rendered the movie again.
in this case too, fcp insists the imported movie is upper field dominant...
is this an annomality in fcp's import routines and does it assume that all pal video that is not dv is upperfield dominant or is there a setting in eithere program that can fix this problem?
    livetype 2.02
    fcp 5.0.x
    thanks

Is your drive formatted macosextended?  Can you edit bars and tone into a new sequence?  What happens if you duplicate an existing sequence, select all and delete?  Can you then edit into this sequence?
Have you tried deleting your fcp preferences?  Get preference manager from www.digitalrebellion.com to do this.
Have you installed or updated any new software or hardware on your system recently?

  • Motion sequence - when rendered in FCP goes blurry.example picture in post

    Im having a strange problem.
Im creating a 20 sec intro graphic sequence in Motion in the PAL format to go into my FCP sequence. When I export and bring into FCP - the video as expected is unrendered and the picture looks sharp-like it did in Motion. However - when I render - it becomes a little blurry (nice technical term...)...
Ive tried using all 3 field dominance settings on Export from Motion - no difference...
When I watch the Intro graphic .mov in the viewer outside the sequence - it looks good quality as it did...so how come when rendering it is loosing so much?
(size increased for emphasis) Left is Outside of sequence - Right is Rendered in Sequence

  • ...latest in FCP problems...

...some of the still images in the canvas have heavy scan lines in them that are carried over into the final QUICKTIME render...this is on top of the STICKING timeline playhead problem I've been experiencing in the last few days...keep the ideas coming folks ...thanks

...but there seems to be a few glitches with my FCP. As I explained I have certain JPEG images(not video freeze frames) that get rendered (as test QUICKTIME movie) with obvious scan lines in them even if the image is not animated(pan). I did a secondary test on another set of images downloaded from my NIKON D-200 (nearly 200 stills) and did not experience any of these problems with that FCP project, scrolling worked perfectly as did the test QUICKTIME movie render. It's beginning to seem that the 1st photo movie file is corrupt or something is corrupting the file during render. This is just a wild guess, hopefully not to a foolish one. Thanks

  • FCP Problem with Firewire output to external monitor and speaker ???Help

i have a g5 powermac. the problem is when using Final cut pro 4hd. when i output my work through firewire to my external monitor and speaker i have a problem with the audio signal. Theres feedback/noise/hiss from the speakers. The firewire connects to DSR-11 vtr deck which feeds my monitor and speakers. it only happens when in FCP is set to A/V firewire output. does not happen if Video output is not set to firewire.
I Diagnosis is that it is not my dsr-11 deck or firewire i've ruled those out. The problem is either FCP software or Hardware problem with my G5
Does anyone have a similar problem. please respone, i will try to answer any respones,
    Thanks
    powermac g5     powermac

    CaptM
From the firewire that feeds the dsr-11. on the output, i use s-video cable to my monitor (sony pvm-14l) and High Quality rca cables thet feed the audio to the Roland Speakers.
I've changed all wires and still have audio problem. I,ve changed my Dsr-11 deck to my camcorder and still have the problem.
If any of u guys use FCP The problem happens When I select view> external Monitor > and select firewire for Audio/ and video. I have never changed my editing habits, something just went wrong with the signal, I think its a Hardware problem with the firewire connection. I'm Going to have to bring this to a Apple Service Center In my local area one day.

  • Hi8 capture into FCP problem...

FCP is not recognizing the camcorder I have connected to the computer in order capture Hi8 tapes. I believe that this setup should work, but perhaps someone knows more about it.
I have a digital 8mm camcorder that plays hi8 tapes and has a firewire connection. It is the smallest one, the 4pin, so I bought a 4pin to 9pin adapter to put it through the firewire 800 port on my MacPro.
I set the Capture Preset to DV NTSC Basic, and I clicked non-controllable device in the Capture window. Actually, once it saw it and captured an audio file with nothing on it I have tried all those old tricks like shutting down the computer and starting up again with the camera on. I've tried two different ports; the back and front.
I guess the problem could be the adaptor; but I want to check all the settings/presets against those that people have used successfully. If anyone has experience with this, please tell me how you did it!
    Thanks!

No, but I can use Google.
Don't use DV NTSC Basic. Use regular DV NTSC, unless your audio is 32k, in which you'll have to make a 32k DV NTSC preset. There might be a problem with the FW800 connector. Quite a few people are reporting problems with these cables. Definitely use the rear FireWire port. Do you have any other devices connected?

  • ReportViewer 2014 PDF rendering and search problems (glyphs / rectangles when text copied to MS Word)

I'm using ReportViewer from MSSQL 2014 express in my experiment, use RDLC /local reports/.
I use slovak char-set (šťďňľřôä) - international chars.
When rendering to PDF I use HumanReadable PDF + Use font sub-set embedding.
The report is viewed on the same server as it is generated.
    The generaed PDF prints correctly,
but some words cannot be found inside PDF /with ctrl+f/ and
when I copy paste the content to MS Word, those words (it§s chars) that cannot be found are replaced by
    rectangles.
Any clue why it this so and how to avoid this issue?
Is there a difference between rendering reports locally /via MSSQL report viewer/ or on the server?
    Thanx.

Adobe Professional 8.1.2 - similar problem. Word converted to PDF. Three paragraphs separated by a single space line break. When paragraphs are copied (either with or without line formatting) the lines do not appear between the paragraphs in the pasted material (in Outlook or Word). Only way I can find to make them appear is to make each paragraph a numbered list. Then it works. What is going on? I have tried different formatting options in Word.

  • Rendering file formats problem (non-issue in premier)

    hello all,
so i'm new to final cut and baffled at the unusual render issues i've encountered from the get go.
i recorded some video using the canon fs-10 / fs-20, a lowend digital camcorder.
the camera outputs the format to .mod which i then converted to .mpeg4.
without any editing in FC, a single clip needs to render just to view it in the canvas but plays ok in the viewer. does this make any sense?
i've even tried to convert to .mov and .avi.
when i used a different camera that automatically records in .mov, final cut plays back in the canvas just fine without rendering.
    so,
    1. what exactly determines when FC renders if not the file format?
    2. why does it need to render at all if i'm just playing back? it plays back in the viewer but not the canvas. baffling.
would be a real shame if FC couldn't handle simple editing with these basic files.
    thanks!

Just grabbing software, and throwing video files at it, without taking the time to read or learn HOW this said application works, isn't wise. FCP isn't Premiere...FCP doesn't just take in any old QT file and then work with it. No. It needs to be converted to a format that FCP works with. What you see in the EASY SETUP list is what FCP works with.
If you don't bother to learn the basics of the application, then things won't go smoothly. If you just want to grab QT files and throw them into an application to start editing, then use Premiere.
    1. what exactly determines when FC renders if not the file format?
If it isn't in the Easy Setup list...FCP will want to render it. If you mix two or more codecs in a sequence, then FCP will render the footage that differs from the main footage you are editing with.
    2. why does it need to render at all if i'm just playing back?
Because It is viewable in the Viewer...that's just a window to the QT file. But the canvas is where things are put together. And that is where settings are determined.
would be a real shame if FC couldn't handle simple editing with these basic files.
Basic files that aren't in editable codecs. At least ones that FCP (and Avid) work with. If you want an app that just works with stuff you throw at it, Premiere and Vegas are for you.
