Rendering/playback issues with Motion

Greetings!
I am relatively new on these forums, and I just posted this same question/situation under "Mac Pro" as I am not sure if this is a software or hardware issue.
I'm working on a video project, and trying to apply Digital Juice's R2G Motion templates to my title sequence. The problem is the rendering of the template in Motion is awful. It strains to play, it's painfully slow, and it's impossible to really get an idea of what is going on. Even if telling Motion to take the rendering from "Full" to "Half", rebooting my Mac, clearing PRAM, and having Motion be the only running application, it makes no difference. Playback is practically at a stand still.
The confusion comes when I tried to run the same template in Motion at my work computer. Playback, while still slow, is manageable. It will at least play back the template at half speed "smoothly" enough that I have a good idea what is happening. And in this test, I was running FCP, Word, TweetDeck, and Juicer at the same time. With all that, Motion on my work computer played the template back at a better pace than my home computer.
Here's the breakdown on the computer's hardware:
WORK COMPUTER:
2.66 GHz Quad-Core (4 core)
8GB RAM
ATI Radeon HD 4870
HOME COMPUTER:
2 3.2 GHz Quad-Core (8 core)
8GB RAM
ATI Radeon HD 2600 (2 cards)
Both are running Mac Snow Leopard 10.6.7 and Motion 4. And the template is playing better on my Work Computer. Hence, my confusion.
If anyone can give me a good direction to follow, a workaround, or some sort of solution (the only thing I've found suggested is a new video card), I would be eternally grateful. (And no, doing the job on my work won't fly. LOL)
Thanks, everyone. I look forward to the replies.

Struggling with Motion, at present

Welcome to the family.
Your 4870 card is superior to the 2600.
I have no idea what Digital Juice is up to these days but their stock video packages come with h-u-g-e media files that must be rendered using their Juicer app.
Templates often include base media that is ultra-high rez to accommodate any format and the components must be rendered out to your format BEFORE you start working.

  • [bug?] playback issues with QT browser plugin, any workarounds?

I've noticed a playback issue with media files using the quicktime plugin (currently v7.1.3) with Firefox 1.5.0.x and now Firefox 2.0 on Windows XP (SP2):
    Description:
When I open a media file in a separate tab or window, audio playback cuts out when I switch focus away from the tab or window (i.e. when it runs in the background). When I put the tab/window in the foreground again, playing resumes.
    Reproducible: Always
    Steps to Reproduce:
    1. Open an mp3 file with quicktime plugin in a new tab
    2. Switch focus to some other tab or firefox window
    Expected Results:
Audio playback should continue in the background.
    Actual Results:
Audio playback cuts out and resumes once you click on the tab containing the plugin or if you hover over it with the cursor. The cutting and resuming out doesn't happen right away but after a short delay, suggesting that it might have something to do with thread prioritization.
The file is completely buffered by quicktime, this is not about connection speed or bandwidth issues.
Opening the link to the same file with right-click->Open Link in External Application works well.
Someone else has filed a bug report against Firefox about this issue here:
    https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=339449
I wouldn't be surprised if this turns out not to be an issue with Gecko but with QuickTime.
Can other users confirm this on XP? Is this a known QuickTime bug? Are there fixes or workarounds?
    Windows XP

Yeah I had that thought as well but no joy. It works for the player but it doesn't solve my plugin problem. It really seems to be something about prioritizing, the way the audio cuts in and out - notice how it takes a few fractions of a second before a process loses its CPU cycles when you click away from it? You can observe this with System Monitor on the Mac or Linux or process explorer on XP. That's how the audio is cutting out and back in. I still think it's probably a bug/'feature' either with Gecko, the Firefox browser engine, or with the QT plugin..

  • Bluetooth headphones playback issues with iOS 6

Has anyone been experiencing some playback issues with the latest iOS 6 and Bluetooth headphones?
A few weeks ago, I bought a pair of Sony's MDR-1RBT Bluetooth headphones and ever since I updated my iOS devices (4S & iPad 2), playback of tracks has been lagging for the first few seconds. Whenever I choose a song on my iPhone or iPad's player, I just can't hear its first 3~10 seconds. I've contacted Sony about this issue and they bluntly replied that it's Apple's issue, but when I contacted Apple, they referred me to their Bluetooth connectivity site. In other words, my problem still hasn't been solved.
Could anyone help me solve this frustrating issue?
    Thanks.

  • Zen - AAC: Playback issue with long songs (± 15 min.)

    Hi,
I made some tests with AAC Itunes plus files, and I've experiencing playback issue with long songs (when it's about 5 minutes or longer, like the second movement of Beethoven's third).
During?playback, there is random artifacts added, never at the same place.
I cleaned up my Zen 6 Gb and even formated it, and the problem still occurs. The latest firmware is installed.
Is this issue has already been reported?
    Thanks.

The Zen does in fact support AAC playback, but it's tricky--I've been dealing with this issue for a while, and I think it's finally solved. First of all, when you say "skipping," do you mean that the track skips ahead further into the same track, or does it skip to the next song with an error message like "There was an error with the audio file"? My problem was with the latter. There are a few possible solutions:
. Delete the erroneous track from your Zen, then re-transfer; in my experience, this corrects the problem, although sometimes it takes a couple of tries.
    2. Make sure your AAC file is in iTunes Plus format (you can choose it in the ripping options in iTunes).
    3. If you haven't already done so, upgrade to Windows 7. This means upgrading to WMP2, which recognizes AAC files and can transfer them to your Zen. It also means you can download a version of Creative Centrale (from the Creative Support site) specifically for the Zen, which replaces the Zen Media Explorer and Creative Mediasource, and which seems to handle AAC transfers much better (so far, I haven't noticed any of the playback errors, but you never know!). By the way, WMP2 and Creative Centrale will also transfer album art easily to the Zen.
    Hope this is helpful.

  • Performance issues with Motion (position, scale, rotate) and GTX 590

I'm experiencing performance issues with my Premiere Pro CC when I scale, position or rotate a clip in the program monitor.
I have no performance issues with playback! It's only, when i move something with the mouse or by changing the x,y-values of Position in the Motion-Dialog in video effects.
Premiere then lags terribly and updates the program monitor only about once per second - this makes it very difficult and cumbersome to work and position things.
On a second Premiere installation on my laptop, performance is fine and fluid - allthough it doesn't have GPU support and is a much slower computer.
I'm pretty sure this has somehow to do with my graphic card, which is a Nvidia GTX 590.
I was told by the support, that it is actually a dual graphic card, which is not supported/liked by Premiere.
The thing is, until the latest Premiere update, I did not have performance issues at all with this card.
I also read on the forum that others with the GTX 590 did not experience any problems with it
So where does this come from?
There is no change in performance whether or not I activate Mercury Playback Engine GPU acceleration.
I also tried deactivating one of the 2 gpus, but there also was no change.
Does anyone else know this problem and has anyone a solution?
I'm running Premiere CC on a Win 7 64bit engine, Nvidia GTX 590, latest driver (of today),

I am suffering from the same phenomenon since I updated just before christmas, I think.
I am hardly able to do scaling, rotating and translating in the program monitor itslef - whil motion has been highlighted in teh effect controls.
In the effect controls I can scale, rotate etc however.
Also I have noticed there is a yellow box with handles in teh program monitor. I remember it was white before.
I cannot figure out what to change in my preferences. What has happened?

  • Is anyone having playback issues with PPro CC 7.0.1?

Using the same computer and working on the same project, we're experiencing playback that often hangs at cut points. We had no problem playing back on the previous version of CC. Happening on multiple machines in our production studio.

Processor  2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    Memory  20 GB 1066 MHz DDR3 ECC
Graphics  ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB
    Software  OS X 10.8.4
One effect is used on one clip (gaussian blur), everything is rendered, no third party hardware.
Various types of media. .MTS from a Canon C100, 5D Mark III and II, Nikon D700 and DV footage. But again, this all worked fine before the latest update on CC.
Now that I've watched the piece a few times through, it seems to have issues with the Canon C100 footage most explicitly.

  • Playback Issues with multiple framerates and Blackmagic Decklink 4K Extreme

I recently swapped by AJA Kona Card for a Blackmagic Decklink 4K Extreme in order to get external monitoring in DaVinci Resolve.
I'm working in a 1080p 23.976 project that includes some 29.97 SD and HD footage. When loading this 29.97fps footage into my source footage, I periodically encounter frozen playback (The play triangle in my toolbar becomes a square symbol and remains that way). From there I am unable to playback any footage in any timeline, and requires a full system shutdown to return to normal! The problem is seemingly intermitent, with successful playback happening sometimes.
The 29.97 footage was DVCPRO, I attempted to transcode to Prores to troubleshoot. No dice. I believe it to be an issue related to the Decklink's inability to handle multiple framerates on-the-fly but wanted to submit here, too. I've also experienced intermittent sync delays on my broadcast monitor.

    Hi Andy,
You should not have any issues with Blackmagic handling multiple formats on the fly. However, I believe the frozen playback issues your describing is related to the Desktop Video 10 driver. I suggest rolling back to 9.3.3 for the time being. Blackmagic is looking into this issue now.

  • Video playback issue with 3rd gen iPod Touch

    Hi all,
I just recently discovered an issue with my iPod touch 3rd generation video playback. The issue just reared its head today and I have no idea what I could've done to cause it. It's a small issue but frustrating enough to cause a problem.
If I watch a video normally (by opening up the Videos section and picking it), it'll play through to the end, then start over again, then stop. This only happens if I choose videos randomly, and doesn't happen if I play videos in a playlist.
    What could be the issue?

I'll second that. I've been having the same problem since the last software update

  • Video Playback ISSUE WITH VISTA!!!!  NEEDED HELP BADLY!!!!!!!

I am using a Dell XPS GEN 5 PC with Windows Vista Premium Edition as the current OS installed. I have latested up date for Itunes and QuickTime (7.1.6) Installed. I have recently bought and downloaded 3 of the Original Star Trek Tv Shows from Itunes. When I try and play one of them, they don't work. The Screen comes up, the show starts, then stops. Sometimes the sound keeps on playing, and then stops. Sometimes it just dosent even come on. I'm guessing (as a highly advanced Windows PC User) That this ia a "video/playback issue, related to a Apple/Vista Compatibility problem. I would like help solving this problem.
    -Nick.

Do you have a SATA hard drive? I have the same problem you describe when trying to play videos in iTunes. Do the previews of music videos on the iTunes web site play OK? If they do you probably have the same problem with SATA HD and iTunes incompatibility. Not sure who is going to fix that problem and when. I have found one fix that worked for me. Copy your video(s) to a flash drive and then play them from there. It's a workaround and you shouldn't have to do it but it does allow you to watch the videos.

  • Video Playback Issues With Apple TV3 Running OS8

I have two Apple TV3s (Both Pre 2013)
One updated today to the latest OS8, the other still running the previous OS7.1.2
Now when trying to play virtually any of my own MP4 videos the OS8 firmware version Apple TV3 refuses to play the file.
Apple TV simply displays "An error occurred loading this content" (retrying simply displays the same error again)
If I then use the second Apple TV3 (running the older firmware OS7.1.2) and try to play exactly the same files from the same iTunes library the file will play back correctly.
So far the OS8 Apple TV3 is unable to play over 95% of the video files it could previously play prior to the firmware update.
The odd file will play but these files are of differing resolutions so don't appear to share anything in common. It is always the same files that will or wont play.
All video files are Profile 4.0 or lower and contain the required audio tracks.
    I am running iTunes 11.4.0.18 (Windows 8.1)
Prior to the update every video file played correctly (on both Apple TVs) and the second Apple TV3 (using the earlier OS7.1.2 firmware) still plays the exact same files correctly.
Music files are unaffected and playback correctly on both Apple TV3s.
The latest firmware update appears to have corrupted the video playback of the Apple TV3 in some way.
I have even tried a complete USB restore of the OS8 Apple TV3 but this has made no difference.
Has anyone else experienced MP4 playback issues since updating their Apple TV3 to OS8?
    Thank you in advance.

After further tests it would appear that Apple TV 7.0 (OS8) firmware is unable to play any video file with NO CHAPTER markers.
If I use MetaX to simply tag an unplayable MP4 file with a single chapter, that file will now play correctly using an Apple TV3 running Apple TV 7.0 (OS8). If the single chapter is then deleted the same file reverts to being unplayable.
In previous versions of Apple TV firmware any video file with NO CHAPTER markers could be played correctly and the Apple TV would automatically generate chapter markers at equally distributed time gaps.
For some reason Apple TV 7.0 (OS8) firmware appears to have removed this auto chapter marker feature so if a file has no chapter markers the Apple TV will now consider the file as invalid.
With MetaX it is possible to manually generate additional chapter markers so you can still skip through the file rather than only scan.
iFlick for Mac should I suspect be able to do the same thing.

  • Anyone having vimeo playback issues with Safari 5.1.10 running OS 10.6.8?

Since upgrading to Safari 5.1.10 for snow leopard I've notice play back issues with some of my video's posted on vimeo. Video pops up or down in brighteness and contrast and in one case goes all pixelated for one shot and back to normal after that.
    http://www.marcosdurian.com/Five_Hours_South.html
    @ aprox: 02:07-02:11 (brightness/contrast pop) & 03:38-03:41 (sever pixelation)
http://www.marcosdurian.com/Narrative.html     (Northbay - the first clip)
    @ aprox 00:28-00:50 (brightness/contrast pops)
The video files playback normal in FireFox, Safari 6.0.5 on 13" Macbook pro. Also plays normal on iPhone 5 w/ ios 6. The files also playback normal on the vimeo website when viewed as flash player but when switched to HTML5 Player the issue is back.
    Please advise.
    thx

I looked at the first one - I see the same behaviour  here on 5.1.10
When viewed in Safari, the vimeo iframe code is defaulting to 'HD'  from the several HTML5 versions of video available - the oddness around 3.38 (screenshot below) is visible on that version in any browser, or even if downloaded & played in quicktime. Firefox defaults to Flash, here anyway. Switching 'HD' off in the player, loads a different file, without the problems.
    I haven't looked in Safari 6 - but it's presumably using a different file.
Vimeo's conversion seems to have slipped up.

  • Audio Playback issues with quicktime 7 and iTunes - distorted sound

I was informed by my Soundcard manufacturer that Quicktime7 now requires a "real" WDM driver.
Many soundcards seems to have a "fake" WDM driver and this leads to chopped up sound that is completely distorted / garbled and impossible to listen to.
The fix is to downgrade to an older version of quicktime and iTunes.
I'm posting this because it was driving me crazy that there is no information on this in the support pages from Apple even if there are plenty of reported issues with audio playback. The system requirements from Apple does not mention the WDM driver either. I am not sure if this "true" WDM driver has to be "windows signed" and all unsigned drivers are "fake".
I'm sure the changed requirements has changed because of the need to address more audio channels but it would be great if the "safe mode" would accept "fake" WDM drivers.
I have also requested a driver revision from my soundcard manufacturer. We'll see...

By way of experiment, try updating your QuickTime Player to the most recent version.
Does that help with the iTunes problem?

  • Issues with Motion in Using Compressor for a PAL DVD

I am new to DVD Studio Pro and Compressor and am trying to create a DVD of a 50 minute PAL project that I made using FCP. I have found a couple tutorials on how to export my project using compressor to be compatible with DSP via pre sets (DVD: Best Quality 4:3) and actually manipulating the controls myself. I have found in using both techniques that during any scene with motion, the edges of the moving actor become blurred and grainy. The tutorials that I checked out I assume (since they were from the US) were for NTSC projects, is there any other considerations that I should make in compressing a PAL project, which might contribute to this graininess? Any ideas?
Any help would be much appreciated. I have included my settings from Compressor below.
    Thanks.
    Name: MPEG-2 6.2Mbps 2-pass 4:3
Description: Fits up to 90 minutes of video with Dolby Digital audio at 192 Kbps or 60 minutes with AIFF audio on a DVD-5
    File Extension: m2v
    Estimated file size: 273.48 MB
    Type: MPEG-2 video elementary stream
    Video Encoder
    Format: M2V
    Width: 720
    Height: 576
Pixel aspect ratio: PAL CCIR 601
    Crop: None
    Frame rate: 25
    Frame Controls: Off
    Aspect ratio: 4:3
    Field dominance: Bottom first
    Average data rate: 6.2 (Mbps)
    2 Pass VBR enabled
    Maximum data rate: 7.7 (Mbps)
    High quality
    Best motion estimation
Closed GOP Size: 12, Structure: IBBP
    DVD Studio Pro meta-data enabled

The general concepts are the same in terms of maintaining quality throughout the work process in terms of Codecs, exports etc.
As to the motion areas, compression markers in FCP can help in problem areas. What you should do is grab some of the problems sections and drop markers in there and encode them. Some of the frame controls can help, depending on source footage. What was the original material and cpautred/edited? Sometimes things in there can also give quality hits.
Lastly some things (like real black outfits on light backgrounds) can cause some edging issues which can take some work to clean up as much as possible...

  • Weird 4k playback issue with Open CL

So I am in premiere CC 2014 and just installed an AMD r9 280 3 gb card. When I hit play on my 4k timline 1/4 res my CPU goes to 100% with terrible playback like 3 fps. The GPU at this point is idle doing nothing at all. Then If I let it play for about 5- 10 seconds suddenly the gpu kicks out of idle to about 50 percent usage and my cpu usage drops to around 50 percent usage. When that happens I get perfect playback. So it looks to me that at the begging of play back the GPU is not helping but then kicking in later. I should also note that if I turn off open CL and just use the CPU I can playback 1/4 res perfectly smooth. Also the footage is on a raid so I am not trying to run this off a single drive. Any ideas what is going on? I was on a 550 ti earlier and did not have this issue with cuda. I just found this 280 open box for 179 so I figured I would give open CL a go and upgrade my gpu.
    System specs
    AMD FX 8350 4.0 ghz
    32 Gb Ram
    R9 280 3gb
    win 7 64 bit
    Premiere CC 2014
    8.0.0
Edit: I also would like to add I am gonna test it in premier CC now to see if the issue is a 2014 bug.
Edit: Only happens in 2014. Interestingly enough CPU usage still goes to 100 percent in CC and the GPU does some work but playback is flawless.

    Hi Jim,
    Thnaks for your feedback.
Here is a link to download some footage : WeTransfer
But you know, I done some test this morning. If I put my footage on my SSD system or on my NAS with RAID 5, no trouble with playback.
But if I let my footage on my  Raid 1 Media volume  (mirroring), the problem still be here... I think it could be the disk speed... What do u think about that ?

  • Horrible playback issues with iTunes 8 and Airport Express over Wifi

    Hello folks,
I just upgraded to iTunes 8, and since then, I've been unable to get good playback from my Airport Express with iTunes on my Macbook Pro.
I get between 5-30 seconds of continuous playback, then a hiccup, ad nauseum, ad inifintum. A five minute track usually ends up taking six-seven minutes to complete, and it's like listening to a CD skip.
Both the Macbook Pro and the Airport Express are communicating over 802.11n, and worked well before the upgrade to iTunes 8. On my older, slower, crappier Powerbook which only has 802.11g but runs iTunes 7 (in the same room, about two feet from the other laptop), playback is rock solid.
I've noticed when I monitor the WLAN interface on my MBP with 'netstat -in', I'm seeing a lot of Ierrs, but there's nothing in any of the system logs to indicate a hardware problem (yet, anyway).
Has anyone else had this issue since upgrading? Should I be looking to get my WLAN NIC fixed, or is it an issue with iTunes 8? Are there diagnostic applications I can use to perform hardware confidence tests on the WLAN NIC?
    cheers,
    Klaus

My AirPort Express optical out has this problem as well, stutter and very bad sound. But only the new 802.11n modell. A older 802.11g model works without a problem.
It worked well until I upgraded to iTunes 8, I bought in in May.
I just had my AirPort Express 802.11n replaced under warranty by Apple but the new unit has the same problem.
Everyone who is using the optical out and have the stutter problem needs to write to Apple about it so they realize it's a problem and fix it.
