Rendering Previews 1:1

I understand this process of Rendering 1:1 Previews may take some time during the import process but it will save me times once the import is completed. My queestion is about the time it takes to render these previews. I am currently importing 519 RAW images and the process will take about 51 minutes, 10 per minute) I realize my RAW files are about 25 mb's in size but is this length of time normal?

Bob,
Sounds good to me.
I'm in that ballpark with smaller raw files. Dual core AMD at about 2.8 gHz, XP, 4 gig memory.
Note that while the previews are abuilding, you can be rating and rejecting images, so that time isn't entirely lost.

  • Lightroom suddenly stopped rendering previews

I've been using Lightroom since v1 and have been using v3 since it was released.  All of a sudden tonight, while working on photos that were already in my catalog, Lightroom has stopped rendering previews and is much slower to operate.
I've optimised my catalog, I've tried purging my cache, I've rebooted etc.  Nothing I've done is helping, if I zoom in in Library view I just see a blury outline that is the existing thumbnail.  Some of my other images don't even have thumbnails anymore.  If I go to Develop view it behaves normally, it's just Library view that seems broken.

I'd purged the CameraRaw cache, but after no success I ended up deleting my entire "Lightroom 3 Catalog Previews.lrdata" directory (which freed up 30GB of space and took over 10 minutes at the command line).
Fingers crossed it seems to have resolved my issue... certainly on relaunching Lightroom it's now recreated this folder, hammered my CPU and successfully created new thumbnails for the folder I was viewing in Lightroom.  It's a little concerning just how much it hammered my CPU (100% for about 5 minutes, still sitting at 75% now after nearly 10 minutes) when I was only looking at a folder with 23 images in it... it was also hammering my Lightroom/System disk for the first 5 minutes, but not the disk with my photos on it.
Oh well, will see if it happens again and I might start to manually delete the previews folder semi-regularly.

  • Re-Linking rendered preview files?

I had to move an entire project from one drive to another. All contents were moved in the same folder structure including the preview files.  Now the rendered preview files dont link up to the project. How can I re-link thses files?
    Thanks
    Ben

Thanks Jim, but Premiere did not ask for the file location when it started up.
Harm, so you are saying I need to re-render everything?. Seems like Adobe would have a way to make this work.
Anyone from Adobe have a comment on this?
    Thanks

  • Corruption of RAW files / rendering preview

I have recently imported many RAW files that I took at an event. The problem is that whilst many of the photos look great, approx a third initially look good but then a 'rendering preview' message comes up - once the message has disappeared the photo's change and end up looking awful!!!
Without meaning to sound ungrateful, before anyone gives the standard role-out answer, I am very aware that RAW files do not contain camera settings etc etc and that the image that comes up instantly is a jpeg until it has finished rendering etc etc. The point being that all photos were taken on the same camera, in the same situation, on the same card and dowloaded at the same time.
Why are only some of the shots coming up with the 'rendering preview' message? The majority render instantly and look great!!
Why do they look so bad. The best way I can describe the way they look is:
    very little dynamic range
    high contrast
    too much gamma
    blown highlights
    very poor quality
    cold
    Thanks in advance

    Hi Guy,
Having the same problem and discussion here:
    http://www.dppro.co.uk/forum/viewthread.php?forum_id=14&thread_id=144&pid=841#post_841
I've checked my "edit/Preferences" and on the Pre-sets Tab my auto tone box is not checked. I don't think it's that but it's at least a helpful suggestion.
You ask" Why are only some of the shots coming up with the 'rendering preview' message? The majority render instantly and look great!! "
it will be the amount of cache/virtual memory you have set aside for Lightroom. The previews will be generated up to the cache limit and then only on demand. Click on one of the unaffected previews and I'll wager that goes south too :o(
I think it's a bug. Your comment about expecting people to say RAW files don't have camera settings. I think that's off the mark. My understanding was that RAW files didn't compress any in camera tweaks irreversibly. It makes no sense for new DSLR's to have all these fancy features if the optimum file format chooses to ignore them. Why bother to put them on Pro spec cameras if they can only be used on Jpeg files? i could be wrong but I'm there's just no point in having all the settings in camera if any serious enthusiast/Pro looking to get the best from their investment has to put hours in on the PC because the premium file option ignores their in camera effort. I though RAW was about options and being able to change your mind. Like I say i could be wrong but I think it's a bug.
I had to upgrade to v 1.3 so I could get the software to read my D300's RAW files. I'm sure an earlier version of lightroom used to pull this stunt too but I'm sure my Fuji S3 files were not...abused... in this way by v1.2.
I'll watch this thread with interest. I hope it works out favourably.

  • Quitting "rendering previews"

I am in the middle of the "rendering previews" step and have a plane to catch, so I need to quit it. Will this screw up my library? Will I be able to continue at a later date and have it pick up where it left off. I have another 300 renderings at 1:1 to go. I am taking the external drive with my library on my trip, but the catalogs are on other hard drives that will stay home.
I am running LR 1.4.1 on Mac G4 running OS 10.4.x.

thanks, John. The learning curve is great for me, so I didn't want to screw things up.

  • Does rendering previews larger than max native resolution benifit you.

Hi, I have Adobe Lightroom 4.3.  I like to know if rendering standard previews, larger than the max native resolution of my LCD display (1680x1050), will Help me, if I look edit photos at great than 1:1 ratio. IE, 2880, 2040, 1680 etc.. In some cases. I work on files with a brush, up to 8:1 magnification.  Does that extra resolution translate to greater detail when working that close?

    help1111111111111111,
You may want to re-think your workflow.
Image sequencing in Develop module is sloooooooowww... - no way around it (other than using EditInLightroom plugin, which reduces resolution, temporarily, in favor of develop module speed, but even then it's slow compared to Library module). note: last 4 images developed are cached in ram, those are fast to get at, but the rest: slooooooooowww...
Image sequencing in Library module is faaaaaaaaaast - if you have up-to-date previews, otherwise it's slooooooowww too.
So the trick is to make sure library previews are up-to-date, then sequence images in the library module - when you hit the image(s) you want to edit, press 'd', or another develop module keyboard shortcut... - then, upon edit completion, return to library module, via 'e' or 'g', or some other preferred method, for more sequencing.
Bottom-line: switching between library & develop module ad-infinitum is a fact of Lightroom life, if you are one of those who can't "do everything there is to do in one module before switching to the other" (I'm one too), and you want to use Lightroom most efficiently.
Maybe one day, Adobe will integrate the lib & dev modules and/or enhance Lightroom to better cache image viewing data, until then... - good luck.

  • Premiere CC 2014 randomly renders preview slowly

It seems to be just one clip it randomly dislikes.
The rest of the timeline renders just fine, and all of the footage is the same format.
The whole timeline is about an hour and a half long. The sequence was built from another clip that is the majority of the timeline, but the clip settings should match each other. This clip is about 5 minutes. The timeline preview renders in about 15 minutes without the offensive clip. When I add it in, it jumps to a 24 hour estimate.
If I put it on its own timeline (even if I just duplicate the one I'm trying to render and delete everything but it, so I KNOW it has the same settings).... it renders just as quickly as everything else. If I try to paste everything onto that timeline with it.... it goes back to being a 24 hour render.
I know workarounds, but I'd like it to just... work. Or to know if I'm doing something wrong. I am trying the SpeedGrade Lumetri, but I pasted the same effect onto several clips. Maybe I'm doing something misguided with that?
    What am I missing?

    Hi w00lf!
A common issue is that many people do not know to use caution when marking an Out with the Premiere Pro playhead. The physical makeup of the playhead includes both the head and tail of a single frame. Placing the playhead on a desired out point and then marking Out will have the effect of marking Out one frame too late. To get the proper duration you are expecting, always move left one frame - then mark Out.
If you zoom in to the playhead, you can see what I mean. In the screenshot, you can see the front edge of the playhead is on the cut. Marking In here is no problem. If you mark Out with the playhead (as shown), you are marking Out at the back end of the playhead, one frame too late and one frame in to the adjacent clip. When marking durations, you have to be very mindful of this behavior.
Many editors make this mistake for quite some time before realizing the issue at hand. When I taught editing in various trade schools here in CA, I made sure all my students knew about this quirk.
    Thanks,
    Kevin

  • CPU usage while rendering previews

    Hi all,
I find it strange that when I render 1:1 previews for raw images from Nikon D800, my overclocked Core i7 3770K @ 4.5GHz is used anywhere from 22%-50% thus completing the render task slower than it really could.
    Is it a known issue?
Is the a 'hotfix' for forcing LR4.3 utilizing the full potential of my CPU?
Is it like this for everyone?
    I'm using Windows 7 64bit with 16GB RAM.
    Thanks,
    Gil.

No, I don't believe it works that way. When you select an image in Library, all that is loaded into RAM are any existing previews, not the image data. When you then ask Lightroom to create 1:1 previews, it will generate this from the actual image data.....hence the I/O activity reading this data, then the CPU activity rendering the preview, plus of course I/O activity writing the preview back to disk (as well as ACR cache entries if they don't already exist). On my much less powerful i7-930 system, this is the how the Task Manager looks when rendering 1:1 previews:
With a more powerful CPU, it wouldn't surprise me to see the spikes a little lower. The key question is how long does it take to render each preview for your D800 files?

  • Pixel Bender not rendering preview

After I have been using Pixel Bender for a while it will stop rendering a preview of the adjustments that have made.  This will occur with any type of file of any size.  It doesn't matter what filter I am in or go to once I get a blank screen, it stays that way.  I can see a preview again if I zoom far out so that the image is really small (12% or smaller) and then I can increase the size to see it at full size again.  The only way to fully correct this issue is to restart my computer.  Shutting down Photoshop and restarting it does not solve the issue.
    My setup:
    Windows 7 64-bit
    Photoshop CS5 64-bit
XFX Nvidia 8800 GTX  768 MB
    Intel Q6600 2.4GHz

I'm assuming that this only happens if you are in GPU mode? If you switch to CPU mode does it still happen? If you make some changes and then click "OK" are those changes applied to your original image even if the preview stopped working?
Shutting down Photoshop should fix the issue because the GPU driver is really tied to the process. Are you using transparent windows in Win7? Do those stop working when this happens?
Sorry for all the questions, we haven't seen this issue before.

  • Crash on import / After rendering preview is squashed

Well, after solving all of this happening Crash on import / Why is my preview squashed? more problems decided to show up. Please read that link first. I feel like it's needed to get the full picture. But I'll give it a resumé as well.
So importing .mp4 files freezes my Premiere. My workaround is to rename those files as .mov and Premiere can accept them. These .mov files however doesn't always like having correct aspect ratio, so I had to fiddle with the "interpreted" thing telling Premiere what the files are supposed to be.
Anyway. It seemed to work fine with Square Pixels (1.0). But not for long. If I add some effects on the footage that needs rendering the video ends up being squashed just a tiny bit to the left, leaving a black bar on the far right.
Side notes.. It takes a very long time to render as well, 15 minutes of footage takes 17 minutes to render. And any speed / duration effects I use makes the audio go far out of sync.
I tried to change interpreted-thing and sequence settings back and forth but I just can't find anything that works. If you need some information on my settings and the files please ask, I don't know myself what to provide and where to find the information.

Nobody have any input on the matter?

LR 4.6 hangs after import while rendering the previews. Normally hanging starts after the first picture. Klicking the next one will restart the process - sometimes it runs up to the end, mostly I have to klick most of the pictures.

  • Pre "Rendering Preview" colours are better - why does LR make it worse?

    Hi guys
When I upload a photo for the first time and then view its larger preview for the first time. When lightroom is generating its preview, it takes a second to generate it. When it generates the preview, the colours that it generates arn't as good as the first image of the photo you see. The photo changes colour after its generating the larger preview... and the generated colours are not as  good.
Why does this occur. In all cases the colour of the photo prior to the preview being rendered are better than the colours once it has finished generating.
    Cheers
    Anthony

Ok cool that makes sense... If I didn't take the photo in landscape mode or anything like that, do I just shift it back to "Camera Faithful"...
Yes and No. The profile is not chosen based on what you were shooting with (this only affects your JPGs), but based on the default, which is Adobe Standard (see also below). But switching it gives you another point to start your editing on.
Also I have a fair few photos that I would like to change back from "Adobe Standard" to  "Camera Faithful" is there any way to do this on mass?
    1) To change multiple photos to a specific profile:
    In Develop:
Set one photo to the desired profile
Select all additional images to have the same profile in the film strip (Shift+Click or Ctrl+Click)
    Press Sync...
    Deselect all settings but Calibration
    Hit Synchronize
    2) To make a certain profile default for all imports for a specific camera type:
Set one photo to the desired profile (do not alter any other parameters, as they will be set as default also)
Press Alt and click on Set Default ...
    Hit Update to Current Settings
Note: The Defaults set this way are valid for imports for a specific Camera Model, limited to  a Camera Serial-No. and/or ISO Setting, depending on your settings in Preferences/Presets.
Lastly, are the colour profiles better in LR 3...
Somebody else will have to answer for this question, I think they are basically the same, but the underlying algorithm has been vastly improved. Btw, "better" is a generally a bad word when refering to camera profiles. You'll find lots of posts here regarding this subject, e.g. here.

  • TIFFs import - trouble real time rendering/preview

I have just imported 359 uncompressed TIFFs for a 15 sec animation I rendered from 3D Studio Max. I cannot play a preview of it in the FCP as it just comes up with 'unrendered'
I am running the latest Final Cut Studio on a 17" MBP with 4gb ram.
I am brand new to FCP and had the seller of the MBP install it for me, so may be his settings are not best for this. Any thoughts or advice would be very gratefully accepted.
    Mark

Umm, tiff images are not video. they need to be rendered for playback.
Open up your shiny new manuals and read through the sections that relate to "stills cache".
A faster way to work with this is to open up QT Pro, import the images and export a Quicktime movie using the appropriate codec for use in FCP.
    Good luck.

  • Rendering preview?

Whenever I want to preview my work, it will show individual frames, but in order to see my work it forces me to render, not export, which takes substantial time, especially when you must do it each time you make a change.
Is there something I am doing wrong, or is this just how Final Cut is. I know iMovie doesn't make you wait like this each time you make a change.
Is there another way to preview it.. and why do i have two player windows.
I am very new to this... I am sorry

I think you should start reading some good introductory book, as that of Tom Wolsky.
In any case, I guess you are trying to import iMovie captured clips into FCE. This could explain why you have to always render before previewing. Even if it's possible to do that it is not recommended unless you first convert the iMovie clips to the native FCE format: this prevents any rendering that is not due to complex effects or transitions.
If this is not the case we need more info about your configuration and workflow.
    Piero
(BTW: alt-P (Play Every Frame) allows you to preview unrendered movies)

  • Rendering Previews stalled.

Hi, I left 978 image importing when I went to bed hoping to see all the previews rendered when I woke up.
Lightroom stopped rendering 1:1 previews after 649 & won't seem to continue.
    They are NEF & jpgs.
It's taking ages to see what's what & sort waiting to see the jpgs render.
Anything I can do to encourage the rendering to recontinue?
Don't really want it to start over.
My mac was on all night, I was hoping it would sleep when it was done rendering.
    Thanks for any help.

So switching back to Lightroom it had started creating previews.
I deleted a bunch of obvious rejects & am letting it run.
    It's very slow.
I did a similar shoot 2 days ago & it seemed to make the previews more quickly.
    15 done so far...
    But at least it's moving.
    Thanks again!
