Rendering problme with Kodak Zi8 clip into FCE

Greetings: I am trying to import a Kodak Zi8 clip into Final Cut Express. I run it through Mpeg Streamclip to transcode it from h264 into Apple Intermediate Codec and set the frame size in Streamclip to 848X480. I open a sequence in FCE, making sure the Sequence Preset is set to Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i50. But when I try to lay the clip into the timeline I get the red line of doom that the video is unrendered (although the audio is not). What am I doing wrong? I have also set the Easy Set-up to Apple Intermediate Codec.

Open the file in the QT player and report exactly what it says in the movie inspector. There is no such video frame size.
If that is the size, then it's standard definition. You need to convert to QuickTime using the DV PAL codec (if you're in Europe) at 720x576. In the Options box set it to 16:9 because it sounds like it's supposed to be anamorphic.

  • Can't import ACVHD video clips into FCE?

First, I've read so many forum comments on this I'm blue in the face, but i've still not found a solution. I've spent the better part of a week reading on this issue and still no joy, so please don't ask me to search - I've done that. To set up my issue...
I have a brand new Canon Vixia HF-R32 camcorder. I shot video in ACVHD (MXP) onto the camera's internal memory. I'm using Final Cut Exoress 4 on a MacBook running 10.7.4 I have a new external terabite HD set as scratch disk.
When I connect camera to computer to download clips things work to a point. I use Log and Transfer and my clips show up in the window. I can set in and out points. I can change the clip name, add scene notes, etc. etc. BUT - when I click the "Add to Que" the problem occurs. The video begins to 'process' as indicated by the little spinning status wheel. However - nothing ever shows in the transfer bar that should show the progress being made in the transfer. When the spinning wheel stops and I click on the clip I get a red circle with exclamation point and the message "Error: No Data."
YES - I have checked preferences under the gear at top of the L&T window and YES my settings are for All formats, All rates, Apple Intermediate Codec and the audio is set to Plain.  That much I gleaned from other posts in various forums, but that does nothing to solve my issue. I've also checkedunder Easy Set Up and have Apple Intermediate set there.
Tonight I spent time on phone with friend who has same type (but Panasonic) camera and same software. We compared many, many settings and all seemed to be set the same. He can import video, I cannot. When he either drags and drops clips from the L&T window or uses the "add to que" button, the status wheel spins, the transfer bar moves and when complete his clip shows up in the original FCE window for editing. Mine does not.
the software recognizes my camera, the clips are either loaded or accessed by the software, I can play the clips in the FCE viewer to set in and out points. Video and audio there is fine, but when I add to que it all falls apart.
I've already bought two video format softwares to change the MTS files to something else but that's not the route I want - I don't want to lose all the resolution. So amyone have any ideas how to get ACVHD files into FCE??? I'm about to shoot either the camera or me to put one of us out of our misery! This can't be that complicated as the ACVHD is a hugely common format.
    Any help most kindly appreciated

Have you verified that your copy of FCE has been updated to 4.0.1?

  • Editing with Kodak zi8 footage for air - VGA setting

Hello. I shot with a Kodak zi8. I used the VGA setting. I couldn't use the HD settings b/c my Mac is old and doesn't handle HD. My FCP is 5.0.4.
So now I am editing in FCP. The Kodak .MOV files are:
    H.264 Decoder, 848 x 480, Millions
AAC, Stereo, 48.000 kHz, FPS 29.97
    My FCP sequence is:
    720x480 NTSC DV 3:2
    Pixel Aspect Ratio NTSC-CCIR 601 DV 720x480
    Anamorphic 16:9 is checked
    Field Dominance Lower
    Editing Timebase: 29.97
    QuickTime Video Settings
    Compressor DV/DVCPRO - NTSC
When I bring in the clips the red render line appears. Am I working in the correct sequence settings?
Also, is this level of quality too low for local (no high-brow nationally-aired spot here) broadcast? I think it's going to be passable but would like to hear your opinion.
    Thanks very much.

You can't really edit H264 in Final Cut Pro.
Use Compressor or MPEG Streamclip to convert your files to an editable codec that FCP works with natively. A list of those codecs can be found under the Easy Setup menu.

  • Transferring IMovie clips into FCE

I have imported video clips using a CanonGL2 camera into IMovie6 and would like to drag some of the clips from the IMovie6 DV project into a FCE HDV project.
Is it that simple just to add and drop, or do I have to do any conversions? Or should I reimport the video clips into the FCE project over, I am trying to avoid having to reimport the video again, but not sure if I will lose any quality.

In FCE use File>Import>Files and navigate to the iMovie clips and import them.
You will have to render them to make them work properly.
    Here is the manual's info:-
    To open an iMovie project:
1 In Final Cut Express, choose File > Open.
2 In the dialog that appears, select the iMovie project you want to open.
The iMovie project opens in the Browser and contains the sequence and the clips as
they appeared in the iMovie Clips pane.
Important: Final Cut Express does not import iMovie sound effects, audio levels, or
transitions. All other applied effects are imported.
3 Double-click the sequence to open the iMovie project in the Timeline.
    4 Render the sequence.
The imported clips are linked to the original media files captured in iMovie (found in
the iMovie project’s Media folder). These files are iMovie DV Stream files and are
encoded differently than the QuickTime files Final Cut Express captures. Keep the
following in mind: DV Stream files do not have timecode tracks, so media imported from iMovie
project files cannot be recaptured. All imported source media must be backed up
    for future reediting.
Imported iMovie DV files might not play back or print to tape in real time without
    being rendered first.

  • Capturing with iMovie and importing into fce 4

Hi, everytime I try to capture mini dv footage from my Panasonic camcorder using final cut express, the transfer/capture crashes.
However, capturing using iMovie 08 gives me no problems at all.
Before I spend more time looking into the errors, if I capture using iMovie 08 and then import that into fce 4, am I losing any audio / video quality? I read somewhere that iMovie works off raw dv files - is this what would get imported into fce?
Note: I would import the iMovie project into fce and not be exporting first from iMovie and then importing into fce.
    thanks

My video is on mini-DV. The camera I used to record was a panasonic ag-dvx100 PAL. I am using DV-PAL easy setup. I am playing back with a panasonic nv-ds30 camcorder (I rented the other one).
I have now managed to get past the dropped frames - that seemed to have been the test tape. I am now using a different tape, the actual tape i used for the footage. Now everytime I capture (using either mark in/out or capture now) the capture stops with a locating timecode and then breaks. I can't seem to capture it all in one go. This scene when I shot it was a single scene so there were no stops/pauses during the recording.
There seemed to be some discussion on this in the thread (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4183209#4183209) but that was a different camera.
    any help would be great.

  • CHOPPY video playback of videos taken with Kodak Zi8 using Quicktime 7

I've tried everything I possibly could (hence joining this forum), but for some reason, my laptop OR desktop computers will NOT play the videos taken with my Kodak Zi8 portable HD video camera, without the videos being dark, and EXTREMELY CHOPPY, using the Quicktime 7 player! Both computers are very capable of playing HD video (720P), so that's not the problem. I can use VLC Media Player, or the media player that came with the Kodak Zi8 (Media Impression media player), and the playback is extremely smooth & bright, even at FULL SCREEN. I thought it had something to do with "h.264", but Apple says that codec is part of QT7. Any suggestions? I greatly appreciate it! Thanks! : )

I'm having the exact same problem. I have the Kodak Zi8 as it outputs a .MOV file and the result in Quicktime is choppy/stuttery playback. The Fip UltraHD camera does the same thing. I would really like to use quicktime rather than the Impressions player, but for now that's all we can use, and it looks great I just wish Quicktime would look this good. Hopefully we will get a helpul reply on this issue.

  • Rendering, Export Format and first step into FCE 4.01

    Hello,
    SCENARIO:
I’m completely new to FC and only have amateur experience in iMovie 06 and somehow managed to use the “new” iMovie. I only did basic stuff, family videos and nothing more (not that the new iMovie is really much more powerful). But I have some work to do now and have access to a workstation with Final Cut Express 4.01. I understand the basics of FCE and have seen Apple tutorials which are pretty basic. With all this in mind I decided to give FCE a try.
    *WHAT DO I HAVE?*
    I have a 45mb 1024x768 H.264 movie, here’s how the movie’s properties look in Finder:
The movie is a 20 minutes screencast demoing a program and was recorded under Windows, I have no access to any source footage. Probably was recorded using Camstasia (or similar) for Windows.
I also have Final Cut Express 4.0.1, Snow Leopard 10.6.2, a 2x Quad Core and 10GB or RAM.
*WHAT DO I HAVE TO DO?*
I will be using a screen capture program (Camstasia, IShowUHD, etc) to record three or four 20 secs clips, which must replace certain parts of the original video. In iMovie (even the latest!) this is more or less not precise, but easy to do. Latest iMovie and the “precision editor” also permits handling the video/audio more easily. The idea is that the clips I will insert, will replace certain existing parts that have mistakes. THe audio will be the same (there’s a spoken voice) so I will be essentially doing the same (sans the errors in the video, hopefully)
But I want to do it in FCE. I’m sure that although I won’t be using its potential, it will be my 1st step into something more powerful. But I have questions which, despite several attempts, preferences hunting, export, render, rinse and repeat, have been unable to answer.
    *WHAT HAPPENS?*
I know that H.264 is not an editing format and that whatever iMovie does in the background is probably part of the “magic” for end users who want to upload it to YouTube; given that premise:
What settings am I supposed to use if I want to edit my above mentioned QuickTime file, provided I can later export whatever I do, back into the same H.264 1024x768 movie?
I have tried different Sequence formats, but they are all 720/1080, etc. and therefore have black borders. There’s no “custom” size that I have seen. Using the highest and closest one, leaves me with 1280xSomething, which is a wide format. I haven’t found a way to export only a “clipped” version (remember I don’t know much about FCE) and if I export using QUickTime Settings and change the size to 1024, the video will be deformed (which is -to some extent- logical, given that 1280 doesn’t fit in 1024). The “viewer” shows the 1024 video correctly, only when I drag it into the sequence, this new border appears (which is correct, because I have to “render” it and it is rendering in 720 −1280xNNN)).
The new clips (which I still don’t have) will probably be also 1024x768 H.264 or similar and I’ll add them to my sequence and inserting them in the corresponding pieces, cuting and making sure the transition fits and the audio is not crazy. But all that is the editing part, which I think I have controlled.
I have trimmed the original 20 minutes video into a 20second one, to “test” all this (I don’t want to spend a few minutes of rendering/exporting for testing this) and have been unable to produce the same 1024x768 movie I had before entering FCE.
    Any pointers?
    Thanks in advance.

I don't pretend to know how iMovie works (I've hardly ever used it), but I very much doubt it allows you to edit 1024x768 video natively without any "behind-the-scenes" conversion.
I’m hardly an expert in iMovie (if such title exists), all I can tell you, is that the H.264 1024x768 videos that i “Drag”, slice, cut, move and finally export (in the same size), look exactly the same.
Are they being converted “behind-the-scenes”? Perhaps.
Do I see or notice any difference on my screens? None at all. They really look identical.
I’d have expected FCE to *at least* be able to perform this very basic task. Evidently, FCE is targeted at something different, which then leads to the question that every iMovie 06 user asked… Why cripple iMovie in the latest releases? Where’s our “not quite FCE” but easy to use editor?
The answer has been the same: there’s no such thing anymore. I thought it was FCE (plus more) but clearly, there’s a huge market FCE can’t really touch. FCE (and Pro) might be very good products for what they do, but they are clearly not even able to touch iMovie marketshare. Which is a pity, cuz iMovie (whether you hate it or love it), is limited in a lot of things
    Thanks.
P.S.: I’m not a fan of iMovie nor a FCE basher. But I love Logic Express/Pro

  • Importing clips from Imovie into FCE - Clips don't match

    Hi
OK I have been successfully importing Imovie clips into FCE, but have recently hit a problem. I make a rough edit in IMovie but when I open the imported file in FCE I get different footage to that which sits in the IMovie project.
Yes I am opening the right clips

    nothing?
ok I have worked around it a little by importing all the footage and that way I get most of it but still not all of it makes it through

  • Imovie locks up/crashes every time I drop a film clip into the project

Almost every time that I drop in a film clip to my current project, iMovie locks up and crashes producing a long readout for Apple.  I've made plenty of projects, but this one is due by Friday. I have to keep waiting to close it and go back in.  Every so often, a clip will drop in perfectly.  Sometimes, just the audio drops in (no video).  This will take forever at this rate!  Any ideas?

You could try converting the clips to DV using MPEG Streamclip, then import the resulting QT DV clips into FCE. In MPEG Streamclip, select Export to QuickTime, then select Compression = "Apple DV/DVCPRO NTSC" with a 720x480 frame size. I don't think that selecting "Other" frame size will work, I suspect it would still require rendering once in FCE.
    Alternatives
You could also try using MPEG Streamclip to convert the video to Apple Intermediate Codec, selecting the 1280x720 (HDTV 720p) frame size .
You might look into whether your camcorder can downconvert the video to DV during playback, and recapture the video in FCE using the DV-NTSC easy setup.
Provided one of these 3 techniques works, it will be better & faster than rendering your existing video clips in FCE.

  • Compressor + Kodak Zi8 files = pinwheel and slowdown

As soon as I drop Kodak Zi8 files into Compressor, I get the pinwheel and all kinds of other slowdowns. Even a 1-minute clip does this. Has anyone else seen this with these files? I would love to use different cameras, but the campaign I am working on is limited to these cameras.
Temp solution: I just use MPEGStreamClip to transcode those files to ProRes 422. For some reason MPGSC does not complain at all with the Kodak files.
    Any ideas?
Other video files do not do this
I have deleted pref files, uninstalled, reinstalled, etc
    Compressor 3.5.1

Last night I created four short videos using each format available on
    the Zi8:
    1080 p at 30 fps
    720 p at 60 fps
    720 p at 30 fps
    and WVGA
I uploaded them to vista computer described in my earlier texts and found something a bit surprising (or maybe not).
I tried to view them several ways: the mediaimpressions Arcsoft app that came with the camera; the most current version of Quicktime; and PE4.
All of them suffered a bit of choppiness, pixelation, stuttering, etc. when I tried to view them in the above methods.
    Strange...
Would this indicate something wrong with the drivers, codecs, etc. on the computer?  or the way the videocamera stored and saved the movies?
I have chatted with the kodak support and need to continue along this today.
I see a similar post with the kodak videocamera (Zi6, another pocket videocamera): http://forums.adobe.com/message/1990668#1990668
From what I read, it appears that one may need to convert the movies to another format (AVI for example).

  • Spliting clips in FCE.

    Dear members:
How can a clip be split in two or more clips using FCE ?
I have just recently moved to FCE from iMovie and this was a rather simple procedure to accomplish in iMovie. I have searched but haven't been able to find instructions on how to do it.
    Thank you in advance,
    Joseph Chamberlain

    Hi, Piero:
Thank for the many pointers and helpful tips you shared. I have found them extremely helpful. I do have some other questions:
I understand your point about the lack of ability to free up unused disk
space in FCE, while in iMovie it is standard and easy practice. I think this is
the result of the FCE design approach: a cut down version of FCP where the
FCP Media Manager (that to my knowledge addresses this issue) is
completely removed... while a simpler iMovie-like subset of its functions
should have been left in FCE.
I would be willing to consider an upgrade to FCP if this will address the limitations I have found in FCE. However, it would be important for me to be able to import all the footage I have already captured in FCE into FCP. Is it possible for FCP to import projects directly from FCE in a simple manner ? Do you know if Apple offers an upgrade path for FCE owners to move up to FCP or Final Cut Studio ?
Anyway, the answer to your question: would it be possible to capture the
footage in iMovie and then transfer it to FCE ? is yes, as long as you accept
some limits and take some precautions.
    Limits:
    - no time code is recorded by iMovie; as a result FCE won't be able to
    recapture project in the future, if this is a point for you;
    - if you simply import iMovie clips into FCE, in FCE you are forced to render
    all audio before any editing.
In order to avoid audio rendering you must first convert the .dv clips (as
imported from iMovie) into the .mov format that is native to FCE: you can
do it with QuickTime Pro, MPEG Streamclip or iMovie itself using the
Export/Movie to QuickTime Movie (NOT DV stream) and applying the
correct compression (DV-PAL or DV-DVCPRO/NTSC), frame rate (25 or
29,97) and audio options (uncompressed/linear PCM, stereo, 48 kHz, 16
    bit).
    Piero
The solution above sounds very time consuming and I would prefer to maintain the timecode in the captured footage. From your explanation it seems FCP with its media manager would be the perfect solution to address my individual needs.
Thanks again for your help and suggestions.
    Joseph

  • AVCHD ingestion into FCE

Recently bought a Panasonic HDC-HS300 video camera. Attempts to ingest HD video clips into FCE 4.0.1 using the Log and Transfer method described in the FCE manual (beginning pg 220) failed. When moving clips from the preview pane to the queue, they start but then go idle. Tried deleting them and starting over as the manual suggests, but further attempts still fail.
    Suggestions anyone?
    Teddi

Tom, I'm hoping you can help me with this same problem. The configuration details are:
    = Camera JVC Everio GZ-HD300SAA
= Footage shot at XP setting, and displaying in the Log and Transfer browser at format 1080i50 (25fps), PAL format
= iMac details as per my signature
= Easy Setup settings set to HDV - Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i50
= One minor concern is that the device control description in that setting still shows HDV FireWire PAL; but I figure this is unlikely to be a problem since the clips all play just fine with the playback controls in the Log and Transfer viewer (but I can't find where to modify that device control setting if I need to).
= In the context menu on the clip, the Preferences pop-up is set to transcode to Apple Intermediate Codec and audio to Plain Stereo (changed following your hint earlier in this thread).
= The drive is an external WD MyBook 2TB (new, still has 1.96TB free), formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
I already have some other clips imported into this project from the hard disk, where they had been previously captured from a different camera using iMovie. These other clips are also in the Apple Intermediate Codec, in HD (1440 x 1080). They can also be previewed in the FCE viewer with no problems. They are on the same drive.
    Observed behavior:
= When I connected the camera, all the clips appeared automatically in the Log and Transfer (L&T) browser, as expected.
= Every clip can be selected in the L&T browser, and then appears in the L&T preview area. They respond completely normally to the viewing controls, scrubbing (as per manual, only updating when you stop etc), play, jumps etc for all buttons working as normal)
= The correct bin is selected, and confirmed with the Reveal Logging Bin button. Up to here, everything is good and normal.
= When any clip is dropped into the Queue (by either button or drag&drop), the Status column shows a spinning icon for about 12 seconds, then stops. The status message above the Queue now says "1 clip queued - Idle". The progress bar has never illuminated. And if I click on that item, the status icon changes to a red shriek error icon, with the tool tip "Error: No Data".
I've run out of manual references, help, and online searches to solve this one.
Incidentally, I'm an absolute newbie to FCE (installed only this very evening! ), but a veteran of Premiere, iMovie, and ULead products, and a video veteran going back into the 1980s working with 2" broadcast tape! So I have a clue about what I want to do, but am currently very frustrated with the tool settings to get it right. Will certainly appreciate any help to get me going over this initial speed-hump.

My current os x is 10.9.5, using final cut express vers. 4.0.1.  I have imported .mov clips created on a older mac os x (lion) and when I wanted to import them into fce, a quicktime conversion window opened up and converted them (I haven't experienced this in the past). I then imported the converted quicktime clips into my fce project.  After doing this I took selected clips and put those edited clips on the fce timeline.  When playing the video back in the fce timeline,I noticed
    1) the video wasn't playing back smoothly like the original content
    2) when looking at the timecode reading of the timeline, the timecode was sputtering as well as the video and audio.  I exported to quicktime just to see if that was consistent, it was.
When I play the converted quicktime content independently of fce,  it plays normally (no sputtering of timecode, video and audio.  Need help to resolve the sputtering playback of converted video content in the fce timeline.  I've never experienced this before.  Any suggestions?

When you say you converted the clips before importing them into FCE, did you convert to AIC or DV and do the converted clips match your FCE Sequence settings exactly?  If not, go back and convert the original files again, using the intended Sequence settings as a guide.
