Rendering slowly gobbles up all the memory

During the FCP render process I watch the Activity Monitor and the memory used slowly increases in a "Two steps forward, one step back" manner.
When I close FCP 5.0.4 the memory used drops slighty but still stays high.
The machine eventually runs out of memory and crashes the render process.

I tried it on another project with the same results.
Nothing else is running in the background.
When I launch another app the "Used memory jumps up a little then goes back down to a slightly lower level.
If it runs long enough to gobble up the memory it will crash every time. I have to babysit the render.
I think that there are two reasons why it is happening. In one case it looks like I applied the same third party filter twice on a couple of clips. Fixed that. In the others I think that there is still the memory leak.
I will try searching again for memory leak. A couple of nights ago at 2 AM I did but may have overlooked something.
When I verify permissions it looks like all the widgets are what get changed. I disabled all but the clock (can't disable that one) with no change in the permissions behavior.

My MacBook Pro (late 2011, core i-7) running OS X 10.10.4 is running hot and very slow with the fan screaming .  Activity Monitor shows a process called com.hp.devicemodel.TransportProxy is hogging almost all the memory and very high CPU activity.  How can I get it to stop.  Force quit will not shut it down.  I would delete the file, but don't know where it is.  Can someone please offer some help? Thanks, Tom

Try to uninstall all HP software (should be in Macintosh HD/Applications/HP folder  It should have an uninstaller within that folder.  My computer settled down just as soon as I finished the uninstall.  Went back into the system preferences and reinstalled my printer and everything seems OK now.  Hope it works for you.

After closing Firefox to use IE8 or any other program (like InterVideo to watch a DVD), everything is very choppy and slow. I have to go into Taskbar, Processes, and close firefox.exe manually (which is using up all the memory/CPU and should have closed before). Then, and only then, does everything behave normally. What is going on and what am I doing wrong or missing??

You may need to use '''[[Safe Mode]]''' (click on "Safe Mode" and read) to localize the problem. Firefox SafeMode is a diagnostic mode that disables extensions and some other features of Firefox. If you are using a theme, switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes before starting Safe Mode. When entering Safe Mode, do not check any items on the entry window, just click "Continue in Safe Mode". Test to see if the problem you are experiencing is corrected.
    See:

If the problem does not occur in Safe-mode then disable all of your extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears. You have to close and restart Firefox after each change via File > Restart Firefox (on Mac: Firefox > Quit). You can use "Disable all add-ons" on the Safe mode start window.

  • Safari takes up all the memory

Am I not managing something right? The computer gets slower and slower. I look at activity monitor and all the memory is in use. Most of it is taken up by Safari (Safari Web Content). I close Safari and it opens up free memory. I open Safari again and it goes back the same. I guess it is because there are a lot of tabs open? I don't need all those tabs open that I know of. Am I not managing my tabs well. I don't understand them well at all. Any suggestions?
2009 iMac with 10.9. I am connected to the internet by a Time Capsule that is connected to my computer with an ethernet cable.
    Thank you
    Carl

If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. This procedure is a diagnostictest. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything suggested in this comment.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed, as well as some other aspects of the configuration that may be related to the problem.
Don’t be alarmed by the seeming complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out. Here's a brief summary: In each of two steps, you copy a line of text from this web page into a window in another application. You wait about a minute. Then you paste some other text, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is copy; paste; paste again. That's all there is to it. Details follow.
While investigating the problem, you may have started the computer in "safe" mode. If possible, these steps should be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing. If you can only boot in safe mode, you can still use this procedure, but not all of it will work. Be sure to mention that in your reply, if you haven't already done so.
Below are instructions to enter UNIX shell commands. The commands are safe and do nothing but produce human-readable output, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you question the safety of the procedure suggested here — which you should — search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects. I am not asking you to trust me. If you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them.
The commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. Step 1 should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
    PB=/usr/libexec/PlistBuddy; PR () { [[ "$o" ]] && printf '\n%s:\n\n%s\n\n' "$1" "$o"; }; PF () { o=$($PB -c Print "$2" | awk -F'= ' \/$3'/{print $2}'); PR "$1"; }; { o=$(( $(vm_stat | awk '/Pageo/{sub("\\.",""); print $2}')/256 )); [[ $o -gt 1024 ]] && printf "\nPageouts: %s MiB\n\n" $o; o=$(kextstat -kl | grep -v com\\.apple | cut -c53- | cut -d\< -f1); PR "Loaded extrinsic kernel extensions"; o=$(launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|org\.(x|openbsd)|\.[0-9]+$/{print $3}'); PR "Loaded extrinsic user agents"; o=$(launchctl getenv DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES); PR "Inserted libraries"; o=$(crontab -l); PR "User cron tasks"; o=$(cat /e*/lau*); PR "Global launchd configuration"; o=$(cat ~/.lau*); PR "Per-user launchd configuration"; PF "Global login items" /L*/P*/loginw* Path; PF "Per-user login items" L*/P*/*loginit* Name; PF "Safari extensions" L*/Saf*/*/E*.plist Bundle | sed 's/\..*$//;s/-[1-9]$//'; o=$(find ~ $TMPDIR.. \( -flags +sappnd,schg,uappnd,uchg -o ! -user $UID -o ! -perm -600 \) | wc -l); [[ $o -eq 0 ]] || printf "\nRestricted user files: %s\n\n" $o; cd; o=$(find -L /S*/L*/E* {,/}L*/{A*d,Compon,Ex,In,Keyb,Mail/Bu,P*P,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo}* -type d -name Contents -prune | while read d; do ID=$($PB -c 'Print :CFBundleIdentifier' "$d/Info.plist"); ID=${ID:-No bundle ID}; egrep -qv "^com\.apple\.[^x]|Accusys|ArcMSR|ATTO|HDPro|HighPoint|driver\.stex|hp-fax|JMicron|microsoft\.MDI|print|SoftRAID" <<< $ID && printf '%s\n\t(%s)\n' "${d%/Contents}" "$ID"; done); PR "Extrinsic loadable bundles"; o=$(find /u*/{,*/}lib -type f -exec sh -c 'file -b "$1" | grep -qw shared && ! codesign -v "$1"' {} {} \; -print); PR "Unsigned shared libraries"; for d in {,/}L*/{La,Priv,Sta}* L*/Fonts; do o=$(ls -A "$d"); PR "$d"; done; } 2> /dev/null | pbcopy; echo $'\nStep 1 done'
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
The command may take up to a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. Wait for the line "Step 1 done" to appear below what you entered. The output of the command will be automatically copied to the Clipboard. If the command produced no output, the Clipboard will be empty. Paste into a reply to this message. No typing is involved in this step.
    Step 2
Remember that you must be logged in as an administrator for this step. Do as in Step 1 with this line:
    PR () { [[ "$o" ]] && printf '\n%s:\n\n%s\n\n' "$1" "$o"; }; { o=$(sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix\.cron)|org\.(amav|apac|calendarse|cups|dove|isc|ntp|post[fg]|x)/{print $3}'); PR "Loaded extrinsic daemons"; o=$(sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook); PR "Login hook"; o=$(sudo crontab -l); PR "Root cron tasks"; o=$(syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'error|GPU |hfs: Ru|I/O e|find tok|n Cause: -|NVDA\(|pagin|timed? ?o' | tail -n25 | awk '/:/{$4=""; print}'); PR "Log check"; } 2> /dev/null | pbcopy; echo $'\nStep 2 done'
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Heed that warning, but don't post it. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
    You can then quit Terminal.
To prevent confusion, I'll repeat: When you type your password in the Terminal window, you won't see what you're typing.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, set one before taking Step 2. If that’s not possible, skip the step.
Important: If any personal information, such as your name or email address, appears in the output of these commands, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
Remember, Steps 1 and 2 are all copy-and-paste — type only your password. Also remember to post the output.

I think you can only get app data back if you reinstall the app and then restore the iPod from backup.  The app should contain the dat up to the time the backup was made.

  • Inactive memory takes all the memory - please help

I have a Macbook Pro - August 2009, upgraded version to 2.66 MHZ, advance display card, Dual core.
I recently upgraded the RAM to 8GB (Kingston) to clear more memory for my massive application use, the thing is it didn't solve anything because the issue I had problems with - Inactive Memory, wasn't resolved.
Inactive memory supposed to hold the memory for the apps you closed in case you'll run them once again, but it NEVER clears the memory, I can see the "blue" color taking all the free mem and the computer slows down! no free mem what so ever.
Now the Inactive mem grows enormously and gets to be more than 4GB, it has the same effect, the memory runs out!
Is there a way to fix it? I'm going crazy with that.. what a terrible design!
iFreeMem doesn't work on the 8GB, I'm at a loss..
    Please help!
    Thanks,
    Eli.

Sounds like you have never done a PRAM reset or a SMC reset. Do both and see if this helps:
    _SMC RESET_
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
    • On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
    • Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
    • Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    _PRAM RESET_
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    • Turn on the computer.
    • Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    • Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    • Release the keys.

  • Macbook pro slow, kernel task is taking all the memory

    Hi,
I'm having problems with my Macbook Pro (13-inch, Early 2011). It's been very slow lately, not only when starting but mostly all the time, even when it comes to Internet and basic tasks. I went to the activity monitor and found out this kernel_task which is consuming mostly of all my memory, and i've been reading to find out that it's a wide-shared problem.
I downloaded EtreCheck and ran it trough so that maybe someone could help me:

Please follow this updated version of the instructions you found.
    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can read it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line

    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start Time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

  • JTextarea area takes all the memory and CPU

I need a component like JTextarea
To view (not to edit) large text files (3 mb)
When I use JTextarea my PC run out of memory and CPU
Can you sagest the right viewer component ?

  • 32gig Memory on Macpro 8 Core - How to use it all the memory and processor speed

    Hello Everyone,
I was wondering if any of you out there know a way to have my Mac Pro use more of the memory it has. I have 32gig of memory and I would like to have it use more processor power and memory if possible. I am aware you can use the "renice -10 -p PIDNUMBER"
How can I make it use more of the processors and memory my machine has. Ex. Running Photoshop or Final Cut, Imovie etc.

Using the Unix nice command raises the priority of a process, but software will use the amount of memory it needs.  You cannot make a program use memory it does not need.  Same with processor cores, if software is written to use only one processor or core you cannot make it use more, the software has to be designed for multi-threading to do that.

  • My MacBook Air keeps saying the start up disc is full...but I haven't used all the memory...help

I keep getting a message to say my start disc is full and I cant understand why. I dont have a lot of things saved on it and it affecting the operating of my laptop ie, freezing/wont download new mail.
Anyone had this issue before? Any ideas whats going on?
    Thanks

First, that's not Local Snapshots -- if there was only 200 MB free, any Local Snapshots had been deleted long before (they're automatically deleted to keep your drive below 80%).
If it starts shrinking rapidly again, see Where did my Disk Space go?
There are lots of possibilities, but your symptoms sound a bit like one (or both) of these:
    • Something going wrong sending thousands of messages to your logs (per the yellow box in the above link).  You'll need to fix whatever that is as well as delete the old log files.
    • An app (or apps) with a memory leak, making OSX use ridiculous amounts of virtual memory (not listed in the link).  While the space is shrinking, select Go > Go to Folder from a Finder menubar, then type /var/vm in the prompt.  That will produce a list of your swap files.  Those are created as needed; the first two are 67 MB, then each additional file is double the size of the previous one, so they can get pretty large.  They're deleted and started over after a Restart.
(There's probably also a sleepimage file there the same size as your installed RAM.  That's normal.)

  • Image Capture Extension consuming all the memory

I have a Macbook Pro from 2011 with OS X Yosemite, Iphoto 9.6 and Aperture 3.6.  I always work with Aperture for my pictures.  But since last weekend it works extremely slow. When I check the Activity Monitor I see that there is something like "Image Capture Extension" consuming a lot of memory and also Kernel_task.
When I force quit "Image Capture Extension", Aperture starts up but still extremely slow.  Is this a hardware issue?  Should I reinstall Aperture?
I think this started after I tried to work in Iphoto again (after long time) to order a photobook before Aperture and Iphoto will close.  I had issues with ordering the photobook (see other discussion of me).

Here is the report from EtherCheck, I have been able to remove some Adware via AdwareMedic but it seems there is still some there,
Also the startup items I cannot remove via Accounts.
For the rest everything looks quite OK, no?

  • My mac air does not have enough memory to hold all the music I want. Can I delete songs from my library before downloading new ones and still have the old songs there when I sync my iPod?

I have a macbook air with 60GB memory. For work, I have used up all the memory and constantly use the files, so transfering them to a different location is not a possibilty now. I have about 5GB of music on it, but would like to transfer more on my iPod classic. I would like to know wether there is a possibility for me to delete old music, get new music into its place and then sync the iPod without losing the old music from it.
    Hope I was clear enough.

See this older post from another forum member Zevoneer covering the different methods and software available to assist you with the task of copying content from your iPod back to your PC and into iTunes.

  • Guest keeps on consuming all the dynamic memory

    Software:
Host: Windows Server 2012 R2 x64 fully patched
Guest: Windows 8 Update 1 x64 (Fully Patched).
I've been experience this problem for a few months and really don't know where to go from here. After starting the specific guest that is having the issue it will happen anywhere between 3-7 days. The guest will consume almost all the memory. The only way
i can log into the guest is with hyper-v manager. Remote Desktop will hang. Then when i log into the guest i can't bring up task manager or many things.  Every time i have to kill the vm and restart it. Last time i thought to keep process monitor up and
running so i could inspect things. Well it happened today again. According the hyper-v manager the guest was consuming almost 24GB of memory:
    here is the memory demand:
What's wierd is when i logged into the vm it was showing it only had 4GB of memory with 3.1GB used. There was hardly anything running other than a few services and they weren't using much memory. Quickly process explorer locked up on me. After logging in
for say 5-10 minutes this always happens too. After trying to diagnose the for a few minutes it will appear i have rebooted the system because i will get the following:
but i definitly did not reboot. If i come back in 24 hours it will still be at the same spot. Again i have to kill the vm but the same vicious cycle will ensue. I'm at a loss how to diagnose this. I've tried to scour the event viewer but it hasn't helped.
Sure i could just turn dynamic memory off or lower the upper threshold of the dynamic memory but i shouldn't have to do that. Thats really just masking the problem. The only default value of dynamic memory i changed was the "Startup Memory". I really
don't want to rebuild the vm but what other options do i have here?

Well i updated one of my main programs on that machine (the on that i would think used "Most" of the memory) and i "thought" it went away but nope i was wrong. It came back. Luckily i left rammap & process explorer running. I could
it when it was consuming almost 6GB rather than the 20+ GB like before. Here is a screenshot of rammap:
As you can see "Paged Pool" memory is huge. I closed almost every app running on the system hoping that would help but it really didn't. The only thing that is running at this point outside of the normal windows processes is EMET 5 & Nortan
Antivirus. I tried to stop halt "Auto Protect" & the firewall but that didn't help any.
unfortunately, though i did catch it early, most programs will fail to load. Even file explorer fails to load. As usual after interacting with process explorer for awhile i get the white screen of death out of it. Hmmmm figure out why so much pool memory
    is being consumed.

  • Computer eats all available memory!

Why is it that my computer gobbles up all free memory until it practically grinds itself to a halt, operating with 10-50 MB free?  I have a 2008 MacBook Pro running 10.8.4 with 4 GB of RAM.
See the attached screenshot of Activity Monitor.  This is a common occurrence.  The only apps running are Safari and Chrome!  The computer runs like a slug, meanwhile there 1.5 GB of inactive memory.  What gives?  What can be done about this?  Thank you.

There is 1.5GB of inactive memory, see this page for memory explanations.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1342
I have a 2007 iMac with 4GB of memory  OS X 10.8.4 with a similar amount of inactive memory but the system is not slow.
As Kappy says put as much memory in as you can but you may need to look further for your slow running.
