Rendering times - Magic Bullet & Nattress

I love the fact that Nattress works inside of FCP, but before I buy I'd like to hear about rendering times. Up til now, I've been using Magic Bullet. How do the two stack up, in terms of time they take overall to get to the finish line?

I performed just those tests and reported my findings here:
www.lfhd.net (near the bottom).
I put a bleach bypass filter form both sets onto a 41 second DVCPRO HD footage. MB took 22 min, Nattress took 7 min. But I expected that. Nattress has a reputation for not only quality, but speed.
THEN I received a copy of Magic Bullet Editors 2 which I was told would render faster. And it did. Same bleach bypass filter took 7:55. But take note, render speeds are not only processor based with MBE2, but also graphics card based.
MBE2 is $349, or $99 if you bought MB AFTER July 2005. Nattress is still $99, and still faster.

  • Rendering with magic bullet instant hd advance

i'm trying to change the video resolution on my sd videos to 1080p hd.
what is the best way to do so to get the best results??
the quailty on my sd videos are good.I just wanna make them 1080p and if possiable make the quailty even bettter with magic bullet instant hd advance.

You can't spin hay into gold, so have realistic expectations of what a plug-in can do.
The Red Giant website has a few before and after clips. (But keep in mind, these are best case scenarios) I have had mixed results with Instant HD. It's not a miracle Easy Button.
Here's something I've wanted to test: capture video with a Blackmagic/AJA board and an upscaling DVD player (like a PS3), using 1080i and analog component connection. PS3 has one of the best consumer hardware upscalers available.  Hmmmm... maybe I'll try it this weekend. I'll post my results

  • Rendering time

    Hello all,
I am working in the following way, and would like to know if there is a way to reduce rendering/compression time.
    1. I capture and edit in native HDV.
    2. I have between two to three video channels - one for the video itself, one for show logo, one for full screen images.
    3. The piece is between 5-8 seconds
    4. I use a motion template for the opening sequence that I change once in a while. Every time I change it I render only what's needed rendering
    5. I don't use transitions in 90% of the time - only one or two audio transitions.
    6. In the latest piece I used for the first time, Magic Bullet Looks, and added a spot fill.
I am exporting video to the web and use AppleTV settings in compressor.
Render time can take up to two hours, and compressor takes additional hour or so. It is more than in the past (at least subjectively).
I am editing on Macbook Pro, 2.4Ghz, 256MB graphic card, 4 GB RAM, and the material is on an external Lacie disk, with FW800.
What am I missing? is there a way to reduce rendering and compression time? Would rendering in ProRes reduce rendering time? Would splicing the images to the video timeline, and by that reducing the amount of video channels, help?
Any advice will be highly appreciated. I rather not invest money in additional equipment.

    Hi
Take a look at this article about [Capturing HDV Into ProRes Via FireWire |http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/capture_hdv_prores_fwbalis.html].
Faster renders is one of the Pros of this workflow.
    Hope that helps !

  • Speedgrade FX freeze rendering or take up to 4x longer to render than Magic Bullet Looks

I've found that using a lumetri "preset" on a clip, the clip is played back beautifully in real time, however, when using my own speedgrade looks (with 2-3 looks layers) the clip plays back choppy (which is normal as it happens with magic bullet looks).  But.... when it comes time to render... The sequence graded with Magic Bullet Looks takes as long as it always has in CS6, while the same sequence graded with my Speedgrade presets takes up to 4x longer and sometimes even freezes (causing an unknown error) both in Encoder CC  and when exporting straight out of PPro CC....
I'm working with the untranscoded .MOV video files from my Nikon D7000
    my machine is
    15in Macbook Pro Late 2011
    2.4 Ghz Intel Core i7
    16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
AMD Radeon HD 6770M 1024 MB
    OSX 10.8.4 (12E55)
I'm not sure if it's a bug or a settings issue... just trying to find out if anyone else is having the same problem.  Thanks.

True... an oversight of a first time poster... Exporting is exactly what I meant... as a matter of fact regarding rendering int he timeline... ... when applying the Magic Bullet effect, you get the red bar and you can render and then you're all set... with the speed grade (presets or my own) it just remains with the yellow bar and plays a bit choppy, some effects more than others, but when it's time to export that's when it either does it extremely slow, freezes or displays the unknown error message...
I do like being able to create these looks with speedgrade and i thought it was an awesome step forward, but i'm not sure what i'm doing wrong as i don't think they would design it to take so much longer to export than MBL...
this is the link to my SG file... it's in a zip as exported looks from Speegrade

  • Magic Bullet Editors

    Hi,
I have been using MBE in FCP 5 on HDV and have had no problems. Now all of a sudden when I apply a Look Suite Effect it turns the image to black, unless the 'Use GPU' box is unchecked. I thought that was only a PC problem? I'm using a Powermac G5 and the software worked fine before.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks
    Andy

Magic Bullet Editors has more "look" presets. It has Misfire which does grain and scratches and splotches. Magic Bullet costs a little bit more, and render times are longer. BUT...render times can be decreased if you have a really good graphics card then it speeds up render times.
Magic Bullet Editors 2...not the full suite...is looks only. It doesn't do 30i to 24p conversion. You need the more expensive version for that. you can also get a version for FCP or After Effects.
Nattress does the 24p conversion. Nattress has a lot of preset "looks," the ones that I use anyway. MB tends to have several that I won't use, because they are a BIT much. Nattress renders faster...for me on this machine. It comes with a film flash transition that is nice. YOu can adjust Chroma, Gamma, it has image effects and transitions. MB doesn't have transitions.
    Nattress is cheaper.

  • Anyone familiar with Magic Bullet software??

If so, I have a question. With all the new cameras that have features such as "cine-gamma" and more detailed control over color and image, is it necessary to even purchase/use something like MB anymore? I was interested in it at some point in the past, seeing as how the filters could help you achieve the elusive "film look." But, it seems these new cameras have that issue covered by processing it for a "film look" as they record, instead of you trying to fix it in post with MB.
Anyone had experience with MB and/or new cameras mentioned (Panasonic DVX100, for example)? I'd like to hear your thoughts. I'm beginning to look at new cameras; I've had my XL1 for nearly 6 years now, and although it's still a workhorse and still going, I'm liking what I'm seeing on the market.
    Thanks,
    Sean Kirkland

I have the Magic Bullet Movie Looks plugins. I also use a Sony HVRZ1U (which does NOT have true 24P) and tonight, as a matter of fact, I'm doing a shoot using a DVX100.
I'll say this: If you use the Magic Bullet plugins, prepare yourself for VERY LONG rendering times. Applying one of their plugins to even a small piece of footage almost quadruples rendering times. Unless you have a RAID 0 and lots of RAM or you're only doing a small piece...well, there it is.
The piece I'm doing tonight is, in fact, going to only be about 7 minutes total when finished, and I may actually apply some Magic Bullet to this piece when it's all finished. It's a promotion for a cigar company, and I think a certain look coupled with the the DVX100 may be pretty cool. In a way, your post is actually what got me thinking about this, so thanks!
I hope I've helped you in some way.

  • Problam with magic bullet instant hd advance

after i changed my sd video to 1080p and added magic bullet instant hd advance i set it so that it renders in h.264 codecs but every time i tryed i got this message.

The H.264 format only permits a limited, constrained set of frame sizes.  In After Effects CS4, these constraints were communicated in the  Comments field of the H.264 Export Settings dialog box, and you must follow those instructions or else get the error message that you got.
In After Effects  CS5, if your settings don't match one of the sets of settings allowed  by the H.264 specification, then a warning icon in the Output  Module Settings dialog box appears, and After Effects tells you  what it's going to do to make the video fit.
The F4V format (which contains video encoded using H.264) has a different set of constrained sizes, including the 1920x1080 size that you're looking for. And other formats (like QuickTime) aren't constrained in this way at all. So, you might have better success choosing a different output format, if you need that output frame size.

  • Magic Bullet Instant HD Advance Is Tanking forever to render

Don't know if it normally takes this long to render in Adobe After Effects CS4.
I have a 64-bit sytem and I hardly got anything on my pc just a few music and music videos so its probably not the computer.
I must of done somthig wrong.Heres what I did.
I imported my 4:3 video then I draged the video under the project panel once i draged the video under the project panel it created a new comp.
I double click it and it open in the timeline panel then i selected the time panel by pressing ctrl+k the new com press setting opend and in the comp I set the resolution to 1920x1080 and the aspect ration to square pixels. Then I scale the video till it fit the comp.
After I did all that I added magic bullet instant hd advance to the video.I set the output to HDTV 1080 ( 1920X1080 ) so that it maches.
    It's been it's now 2 hours and still it's rendering.It's says that it's rendering 1 of 2 what's that about?
Does it render with the plug-in and with out?
Anyways if someone reads all this can u tell if I did anything wrong. If so explane what I did wrong and how to do it right.

it frezes up and pauses threw out the whole video eveytime.
don't know why it does that when i upscaled the video without magic bullet the video was blurry but when i added magic bullet instant hd advance the video wasn't blurry anymore instad the keeped frezing and pauseing.

  • Magic Bullet plugins and FCP

I'm trying to resurrect an old project, wherein I'd used my Magic Bullet plugins. That was two or three versions of FCP ago. My FCP 6.06 says it can't 'load' the MB plugins for this resurrected project. I check the FCP Plugins folder and they are there - along with my Nattress filters etc., in a folder marked:
    Magic Bullet Editors FCP +(k)
Perhaps the protocol has changed. I've changed houses and studios at least three times since I made that film, and can't find my MB manual and whatever info might help me to reconnect plugin to project.
Any suggestions would be most appreciated...
    Ben

I'm just thinking I could get a lot of the same effects using Color, couldn't I? I remember a bunch of presets in Color that reminded me of the Magic Bullet stuff.
I'm off to check that ... though I'd have to redo the color corrections from scratch ... but I've been meaning to start using Color for awhile; time to start...

  • Magic Bullet Editors 2

    www.lfhd.net
Red Giant Software recently released Magic Bullet Editors 2. It renders much faster than the first version. And it has great film look (color correction) filters.
Nattress Film Effects filters have great color correction presets too. Plus it STILL is the only plugin package that converts 60i and 30 fps footage to 24P. Oh, and it is currently being used for Fox Sports for the playoffs.
Just to let you all know.

I too can confirm that MBE 2 works with FCP 6.
And as for FCE...you gotta ask that in the FCE forum.

  • Extreme rendering times when applying stills

    Hi guys,
I'm doing a job where I've recorded a few lectures, and some interviews.
The lecture is roughly 40 minutes long. It's split screen with a close up of the presenter on the right, and the keynote on the left.
All this is stiched together in PP.
Thing is, it takes 8 hours to render this!!!
I've kind of concluded that it must be when applying the jpg's the time is going thrue the roof! I know this because the interviews was originally without any graphics, are two minutes long, and took 15 minutes to render, but after applying a logo and some other .psd layers to it, it takes aprox 2,5 hours to render!!
    How can this be?
    My workflow is as follows:
5DMK2 files (.mov) are transcoded with Cineform Scene, then edited in PP. I apply Magic Bullet Colorista 2, Looks,Neat Image Noise Reducer and a few seconds of Twixtor. I then render it at H.264, 720p, 24p.
    My computer is a:
    i7 4,2 ghz Intel
    4 gigs of ram
    ATi gfx card
Hope some can help, or perhaps advise me to use another rendering method to render the lectures in a decent time? It dosen't have to be HD, it just gotta work!

    How can this be?
    Here's your answer.
I apply Magic Bullet Colorista 2, Looks,Neat Image Noise Reducer and a few seconds of Twixtor. I then render it at H.264, 720p, 24p.

  • PP CS4 crash - because of magic bullet stabilizer??

I'm using PP CS4 and I have a wedding video that I've been working on and it all of the sudden crashed on me. I used time machine to pull up an older version which opened fine but I lost the hours of work I put in. So I tried again to open the file that crashed and it worked. I sent it to the media encoder to render out but woke up to an "unknown error" message. I'm back to being unable to open the file with all the work.
My hunch is that the problem is an effect, more specifically Magic Bullet Stabilizer. This is only a guess but I remember it acting funny when I dropped it on the video layer. (It didn't seem to work and it would freeze up a little.) I could be wrong, other effects I'm using are Magic Bullet Denoiser and a bunch of standard color effects.
When I try to open the file I see what looks like chopped up pieces of an error message and my desktop background in the project window and then it crashes. I'm unable to do anything before PP crashes.
If anyone can help, please do...
    Thanks...

    Hi there,
I have seen crashes using Magic Bullet Denoiser in Premiere Pro CS5.  Red Giant says Denoiser is currently unsupported for CS5, and I assume that goes the same for CS4.  The Denoiser compatibility notes are here:
    http://www.redgiantsoftware.com/products/all/magic-bullet-denoiser/compatibility/
Unfortunately, I don't have compatibility info on Magic Bullet Steady for CS4.  I know it is discontinued for CS5.  Perhaps you could contact Red Giant directly to ask them.  Even better, if you could post back your results for other users who may have the same question.
    Cheers,
    Zac

  • After Effects CC 2014 Crashing with Magic Bullet Looks on Mac

    Hi,
I recently installed the upgrade to the latest After Effects CC 2014 v13.0 and found the Magic Bullet Looks now causes After Effects to crash. I'm using MBL v2.5.2
I opened the Activity Monitor and noticed that whenever the crash occurs the Adobe QT32 Server is in a state of (Not Responding)
On a clip I can apply the MBL plugin with no problems and even if I am copying a previously set up version from a previous clip, it applies and renders without trouble. I can click "Edit" on the plugin controls, open up the MBL control window and make all the adjustments I need without any trouble. The issue is when I then click either "Finished" or "Cancel" to go back to After Effects. The program freezes and I get the spinning wheel of death for about ten seconds and the the whole thing, MBL and AE shut down.
    I am running:
    MacBook Pro
    OS 10.9.4
Processor  2.3 GHz Intel Core i72.3 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory  8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics  AMD Radeon HD 6750M 1024 MB
    Cuda  6.0.54
The footage is Apple Quicktime ProRes HQ
I have Quicktime v10.3 installed and Quicktime Pro v7.6.6
I am at a loss as of how to fix or even work around this. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

There was a bug in MBL on Premiere CC 2014 that was causing crashing and lockups. Red Giant released an update quite quickly that so far seems to have fixed it for me. I know you're talking about AE but maybe there's some common code that was also fixed? As Rick says, have you checked the latest ver of MBL?

  • I just updated to new final cut pro x 10.1.1 and i am also on mavericks so but on my editing timeline i was trying to color grade using magic bullet looks but i am having problem with it. when it comes back to tcp x it's black.

I just updated to the new final cut pro x 10.1.1 and i am also on mavericks so but on my editing timeline i was trying to color grade using magic bullet looks but i am having problem with it. When i send a sample to MBL and color grade it , it comes back to final cut pro x all black even after render. By the way on the MBL i am using the GPU rendering, I used before like 4months ago and it was fine. And i don't like to use the CPU because it very slow.

What is the frame rate of the project? At what frame rate was the media recorded? What frame size?
    What are the audio settings?
What are the specs of the machine, in particular how much RAM, how is the hard drive connected, etc.?
If possible, post screenshots of the inspector for the project.
It could be related to the audio frequency?

  • Render Problem with Magic Bullet Looks

Can't render effects from Magic Bullet Looks with Final Cut Pro. I receive this error message: 'The effects looks failed to render: your hardware cannot render at the requested size and depth.'
However, it renders fine with CS4.
The graphics card I have is the ATI RADEON HD 2600 XT. 256MB
All this is on the same computer.
    Any suggestions?
